I've seen more than a few Subaru WRXs puff a little wisp of bluish smoke from their big exhaust during a manual shift and was wondering what this means. Throttle, clutch, puff throttle. I was following a guy yesterday on a back road and saw it several times, and that's not the first one I've noticed.
View 3 RepliesWell I just bought my first car about 3 weeks ago, its been in the shop for 2 of those weeks after I discovered that I needed several repairs. The car cost 3300. Anyways I got screwed by the sketchy guy who sold me the car. To get back to the point, the car had transmission problems and did not make a puff noise before the repairs. It creates this sound sometimes on acceleration, slowing, shifting, and pushing in the clutch. It has almost a 100% chance of making this puff when starting the car up. What the problem is? 1999 Impreza Outback....
View 3 RepliesI drove through some hills and inclines before reaching my destination. When i pulled over the lobby of the clubhouse, the guard noticed the smoke my car was emitting. I checked the exhaust and it did emit smoke all the way up to the parking area.
I parked for a good 1-2 hours. When i drove it again for around 10-15 mins up and down inclines, it was not emitting smoke.
Turned the engine off and parked for a good 30 minutes as i waited for someone. I drove back to the clubhouse and the car stood on idle for 10 mins.
As i took off, i looked at my side mirrors and noticed that it started emitting the same white/bluish smoke. This is my first brand new diesel car so I'm not quite familiar with how the appearance of smoke should be. My car is :
- 2015 purchased Tiguan 2.0 TDI 4motion, 140 Ps
- I have only driven it for 2000 km
- has been with me for just 30 days
- running on Shell V-Power diesel
The dealer said Tiguans really do emit smoke like this regularly. So I'm hoping this is not a symptom of any major problem.
My Uncle has a 1999 F250 with 260K miles. Engine, fuel and exhaust systems have never been touched. Saturday he pulled his 26 foot horse trailer throughout WA with no problems. Sunday he went to take the truck to town and noticed that he suddenly had a lack of power, and some smoke (possibly blue-ish) coming from the exhaust. He has been told "injectors" by a couple people, "turbo" by some, and "injector harness/valve cover gasket" by others.

This is a 2000 V6 passat. The car has a valve clatter when you first put a load on the engine that goes away quickly. I've read that this is likely the cam tensioners leaking down - is that right.
I have a 00 dodge caravan. Has always been a good van. Recently when I start it up first thing in the morning there is a puff of blue smoke come out of the exhaust. This will not show up again if you start the van up wth in an hour or so. If you leave it for 3 or more hours you will get a puff of blue smoke but not as much as the one after it has sat all night. What this might be????

View 1 RepliesI have a 12 F150 with the 5.0L. it has 27000 miles on the clock. Noticed twice a small puff of white smoke coming out of the exhaust and decided to check the oil level and it was a quart low. The last oil change was done at 23000 miles and used Full Synthetic Pennzoil and a K&N filter. Called the local dealership I purchased at and they told me NOT to use full synthetic and should only be using Motorcraft semi synthetic with a Motorcraft filter. I know the dealerships will only endorse and advice Motorcraft products but what does everyone else use and think. In the meantime I added a quart of oil and all is fine.
View 5 RepliesI've been chasing a problem all summer. Began with crappy batteries dying intermittently. I replaced the batteries, FICM, finally cleaned EGR valve and replaced ICP with pigtail. The problem is still persistent. Basically a rough idle, puff of whit smoke on cold startup, rough running at around 1500 rpms( driving at 50 mph). The ICP was soaked in oil so i was confident replacing it would finally cure my issues. It actually got worse with the rough idle turning to a surging idle and quite rumbly at 50 mph speed. I guess its time to look to injector issues but i thought id check if after replacing icp/ cleaning egr. I also have a slight exhaust leak at turbo out that i can see. The clamp is not seated properly. This after turbo connection to exhaust.
View 1 RepliesI purchased a 2006 Impreza 2.5 back in July, and since then, have replaced the cam seal twice but I am still having problems. I smell burned oil and see faint smoke coming from the motor (lookers right- battery side). My local mechanic thinks the camshaft might be at fault, but is unsure. I have only owned Subarus, and have never had this issue with any other models. Head gaskets are brand new, same with timing belt, water-pump, radiator, and cam seal. Vehicle has 160k on it, and is my daily driver.
View 9 RepliesI have a 08 Subaru 2.5i Impreza and until now I thought this was a fluke but it is happening more frequently this week.When I park my car I engage the the parking brake and put the shifter into first gear, turn the car off ... etc... When I go back to the car I depress the clutch, start the car, apply the brake and disengage the parking brake. I then proceed to shift to reverse to back out of my parking spot, here is where the problem lays. More often then not the car shifts to reverse and I am on my way but every so often the shifter refuses to go into reverse until I release and depress the clutch pedal. After that it drops into reverse and away I go.
View 4 RepliesI have a 2004 1.8t Jetta with 97000 mile that seems to run fine. Every once in a while when I hammer the throttle a huge cloud of light bluish smoke comes from the back of the car and seems to lose its power until it hits second gear and then all is fine. It doesn't happen all the time but freaks me out when it does. I don't get any warnings on the dash. I just bought this car 3 weeks ago and of course this didn't happen when I drove it.
View 8 RepliesRecently, my car has been sounding louder than usual. It seems to be coming from under the vehicle, and when I checked, there was smoke coming from a pipe underneath. My best guess is that the exhaust is leaking. It kind of looks like there's a disconnect here....
View 3 RepliesI have a 1996 subaru impreza outback. It is now dead. Billowing white smoke, coolant coming out of the tailpipe, terrible rocky idle and some smoke coming from the exhaust at the manifold. (assuming it cracked from the harsh idle) I'm pretty good with cars but I've never taken on a head gasket problem myself. I have time to fix it, I just don't really know if it will be worth it. Should i just replace the motor w/ a scrapyard motor? Should I take this opportunity to rebuild and upgrade? I have a crappy chevy to get me around in the meantime. Should I give it a try or just scrap it. I paid 800 bucks for this car and it has 220k miles. No major problems until now. New alt a few months back. Previous two(only two) didn't have any problems at all. I feel like it would be worth it.
View 17 RepliesOK, so go out to my 1994 Acura Legend, crank it, hear a loud hum that doesn't go away, then bluish smoke appears from under the hood. Immediately shut off the engine and open the hood to release the smoke. Haven't touched it since.

When I got out of the car, I realized that the transmission fluid was leaking under the car and I think all transmission fluid got out for some reason
This is a 2009 Auto 1.6 engine toyota yaris in the USA. I bought the car with a clean car fax. but later on I learned that the transmission has been replaced. I bought the car on 2010 and when I bought, it had 16K miles now it has 60K miles. Bought it for 10K+tax.
Do you think my transmission is gone or is it just leaking? There were no problems no noise no low performance of any kind. How much would it cost to replace? or should I get a rebuild one? My mechanic friend checked the transmission and said I need a new one.
Well, tonight while driving, I started to smell something burning. I just thought it was something outside. All of a sudden I see a little puff of smoke rise up off to my left side. A hot spot had developed and burned through the leather.

View 4 RepliesI have a 07 camry 4 cylinder with about 80k miles on it. Now on cold starts i started to notice that it will have a puff of blue smoke out the exhaust then it will go away right away and when i drive it there is no smoke and the car drives fine.
I did some research and Im thinking that it is the valve seals. Now my question has tried to sea foam it and then run thicker oil to see it it will stop the smoking? or will i just have to replace the valve seals?
I was driving 65 mph along the freeway when all of a sudden I felt a huge knock under my car, and I saw a puff of smoke out of the back window. I pulled the car over and I am leaking oil somewhere along the passenger side of the car. There wasn't anything in the road in front of me so the only thing i can think of is something came from the lane beside me and shot over.
View 16 RepliesSo the wife was following me home yesterday and I got on it at a stop light. She said that I had a puff of black smoke come out when I shifted gears. The car is a 2006 2.0 m/t w/ about 60,000 miles. Never had the oil light comes on but dipstick is always dryer than it should be although dealer always says I'm fine. Today my brother-in-law was following me and I told him to watch. He said he never saw a puff when I was shifting but that once at idle he saw a slight black smoke. Car is cpo for another year or about 13,000 miles so it's not an immediate issue but if it's a problem I want it fixed before warranty expires. Is this just normal?
