Sonata I45 (YF - 2011+) :: Strong Smell Of Gas In Oil
Feb 6, 2011
I was checking my oil the other the other day and it has a pretty strong smell of gas. The car has 2700 miles and still on the original oil. I drive about 20 miles to work one way and don't make a lot of short trips. I checked tho oil when the car was new and didn't notice the smell. Whats going on? Is this normal for a GDI engine? I will take the care in this week to talk to the service manager but wanted to get some input before i went in.

I have a 2011 GTI (stock - no mods) and noticed in the past two weeks or so a gas smell. The past few days it will be strong at start up after sitting for a few hours. I brought it to the dealer and they did not find any issues. After long drives, the odor is not present.

I purchased a 2011 Chevrolet Impala last year with 14,000. When the car reach 26,000 I begin to smell a very strong sulfur smell coming from the exhaust. I took the car to the local Chevrolet dealer and was told that the particles in the catalytic converter begin to break up at about 26,000 mile and the result is a sulfur smell.
I didn't believe that all Impalas had this problem. So I took it to the Chevrolet dealer in the next town where I personally know and trust the maintenance chief. He put his two best men on the car and could not find anything wrong. I was told to try another gas station which I did but it did not work. I now have 31,000 miles on the car and the smell is very strong coming into the passenger compartment when stopped.

My wife couldnt get her 2011 SE to start this morning. It engine turns over strong but it wouldn't start. Brake lights worked. Brake pedal very hard. Tried several times but would not start. Finally I jumped battery just in case and it cranked. Don't know if this was coincidence or not. Car is two years old and only 30k. I checked for interior lights being left on or other things that might drain the battery.
Could a low Fob battery cause this? Brake switch? No codes thrown. Taking in to dealer but wanted to rule out a simple fix.

Should I do an Oil change? I never noticed this before. I have 5897 miles on the oil now.

The past few days when I turn my car on and the before the AC comes on (I leave it on Auto) I get a smell like Silicon Caulk coming through the vents. I notice my AC doesn't actually light up until a few minutes on my Auto setting. It is usually 90+ degrees outside and I have the Auto set in the low 60's. After about ten minutes it will finally kick on and blow cold air.

Well I started smelling Gas fumes in the cabin of my 11 GLS. The smell was intermittent for about a month now. Then last weekend it started getting bad. I found it only smelled when pulling fresh air through the HVAC, so it had to be under the hood. Pulled the engine cover to find the foam backing was soaked with gas. Started the car and could see the Hard fuel line dripping.
I saw from other post on the forum that this tube has one time use fitting on both ends and that a special tool is needed to torque the fittings. Dropped it off at the dealer yesterday and they are replacing the line today.
I tell you all this because the Dealer said that their records show my car had the short block replaced at 24000 miles. When replaced they probably didn't torque the line correctly causing it to leak.
The question I have is, Should I be more or less worried about the bottom end of this engine now that I know it has been replaced? The car has 44000 miles on it now.

My 2011 Sonata smells like exhaust inside the cab of the car unless I keep the button pushed for "inside air circulation".
I called the dealer and as it turns out, this is a common problem with this model. A hose has to be replaced on the exhaust system.
I knew I was smelling exhaust and also knew there was a problem with the car/exhaust!

My wife was in the car today, and complained about a strange odor coming from the A/C vents. I would describe it as a slight vinegar/alcohol/sour odor. I think it is from the A/C vents.

I was one of the many lucky ones to have my engine stall on me, and just had the replacement put in back in April. Drove the car from San Diego to Phoenix, and everything was fine.
A couple of weeks ago, I noticed some gas vapor fumes coming into the car usually during the initial start up, and then the smell would go away.
I read some old threads from 2011 about the pcv hose causing this issue for many owners, so I replaced both the valve and the hose. This hasn't solved the issue, and when i run the vehicle and inspect under the hood, the fume smell is still coming from that vicinity.
Is there some other valve nearby that i should inspect or replace?

I few weeks ago noticed musty smell out of my air vents but didn't mind it thinking it something temporary. Mind you that this only occurs when i have just the fan running without the AC or recycle feature. I opened up the filter and cleaned it out of debris. Looking at the filter it seem like it got wet because of color change that occurs on it, brownish(muddy). I bought the car pre-owned almost 10 months ago, had one service done but unfortunately Hyundai dealer scheduled the service hour before closing down and i think they didn't mind checking the filter, let alone checking tire/brake tread and no car wash.

My car if left on in park for 3-4 minutes starts to have a heavy smell of something... Is my car running a little rich or is there a more serious underlying problem?
RPM of car idle is 750.
And car doesn't smell like fuel when I'm driving, only if I leave the car running for a while and it sits there does this smell begin to build up.

I have a 2011 Sonata and have issues where my A/C won't cool properly and gives off a funky smell when I'm at a stop. Then it continues cooling when I drive at speeds.
I am going to the dealership for a steering clicking noise as well and was wondering is it worth telling them this problem too or should I go to an independent shop? My car is at 99,000 miles and I know A/C isn't part of powertrain.

Filled up with gas recently and afterward I have a distinct gas smell in the cabin and trunk. I see the 2011 Sonata has an issue with this. Apparently a pcv valve hose problem. The car is a GL. I did not overfill the tank and the cap is on tight. Has the pcv hose issue been fixed with the 2012 model? Are there other possible issues that could cause this? Plan to call the dealer tomorrow.

I bought a 2012 Sonata limited a month ago and have no complaints so far. I have never owned a Hyundai before and just wanted to ask if a burning smell above rear wheels after driving a bit is normal , due to the fact that the car is still technically breaking in ? It has 850 km on it. I can not smell that rubber burning odour when I park outside though. But when I park in my garage and just walk around or try to get something from my trunk I do get the smell. It used to come form both rear wheels and now it seems to be coming from the right one only, just above exhaust system. I checked the rear rims and breaks for temperature and they do not seem to be any hotter than the front ones. I did get undercoat shield protection called Platinum Shield frome the dealer and from what I could see it does not look like that they put anything on the exhaust system itself.

After the upgrade to APR Stage 1, there is a strong Gas smell in the car. The APR dealer indicates that this is normal (expected) due to the additional boost.
Is this correct. DO all of you who have the APR upgrade have a gas smell in the car? The car has a stock exhaust.

There is a strong gas smell in the car when the car is idle. Ive checked for leaks under the car, checked the gas cap and i check the engine area for any wet spots, everything good. Where else to look .

There is no noise that would indicate a hole in the muffler, just the exhaust smell. I'm wondering if the catalytic converter is going out? If it is the catalytic converter, will it strand me on the highway eventually?

Just in the last couple days, after driving for a while, I noticed a strong burning smell immediately as every time I opened my door! It doesn't feel like it's from the engine bay, but more likely from underneath of the car (I could smell it near the rear wheel arch). The smell starts very noticeable and diminishes quickly! BTW, it's a 2015 GTI DSG, 2-month-old, 2700 miles, pure stock. I got a bit concern on this since it never happened before.

Having a strong odor/smell in there car after service at the dealer? I have a strong smell as if someone sprayed an aerosol can in the car or a marker was left without the lid on it. It has been 2 days since the service and the smell is still there. I called the dealer and they said they would take a look at it, but they didn't know what it would be. I though it might be the adblue since they did refill it, but I don't think that stuff has this strong of a smell and the filler is in the trunk area.

Today while leaving work my car was giving off a strong fuel smell. Wife noticed the garage stunk of gasoline when she got home.
I removed the engine cover just now, and ran the car and checked for any leaks around the fuel rail area, but didn't notice anything.
