Car wouldn't start, would just kind of do a high pitch whining. Bought new battery and still does it. It might crank right up or take up to 5-6 times. I'm a second owner and I believe it is the starter.
View 12 RepliesI have a 2011 F-350 Diesel. It started making a strange whining sound when I start it in the morning. Very random and only does it when it's 0- -4 c. Took it to the dealership and they said its the cooler fan clutch. Got it replaced yesterday, and this morning I started it up and the whining sound was back. It also had a weird vibrating sound. What it could be?
View 10 RepliesMy GF drives a '05 Camry V6 with 82k miles on it. Just the other night, out of no where my GF's car starts to have this high pitch whining coming from the engine.
I was about 20ft. away when she started the car and from there it sounded like the power steering was out of fluid.. made the exact same sound (any guy worth his whit knows the sound). After I opened the hood I realized it wasn't the PS. After a little trouble shooting the noise seems to be coming from the left side... thought it could be a belt at first, but after playing around I swear it's coming from the heater core/AC lines.
I can feel the vibration in them and when I was pinching them together and putting pressure on them sometimes the noise would lessen or completely go away. I had my GF rev the engine and one time (when I was holding the lines) the noise was completely gone for a few minutes.
I can't pinpoint the exact place the noise is coming from... but after googling it it seems that most of the time strange noises are coming from that area it's either the water pump bearing, alternator or TB.
I took a video, but you can't really hear the noise cause it's a crappy cell video.... but the noise is really loud.
I just drove away in a new 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan - had 106 miles when I took title at the dealership - and immediately noticed the most annoying high pitched whine or whistle. It seems to occur under 2000 RPMs and starts around 25mph. It continues until about 45 mps and then either becomes less audible behind the engine noise or stops - hard to tell. When the car slows down, it comes back -- most of the time. It changes in pitch as the car goes faster and as it slows down.
It has been so loud at times that I think it's a police or ambulance siren and I have gotten ready to pull over. It does not happen in neutral when I rev the engine - the car has to be moving. Turning the wheels doesn't seem to make a difference. I am going to take it in to the dealer but I suspect they will just laugh and say that's how the car sounds. I've never had a car that had such an annoying soundtrack - and I've rented about 5 of these minivans over the past 3 years and never experienced this, either.
My sons 97 LeSabre runs and drives like a top most of the time. Twice now though over the last three months it has died on him. Both times the car stalling out has been preceded by a high pitch whining noise that seems to be coming from the fuel pump. The first time, it would restart and run for a few minutes with the whining sound then die again. We towed it and let it sit a couple days and found that cleaning the MAF sensor may fix it. We did this and it worked.However, yesterday afternoon he and a couple friends ran into town, about a 20-mile drive, to run a couple errands. Drove around in town for about 30 minutes and it started the high pitch whine from the tank again and made it a couple miles across town before it died again. Pushed it around the corner to a gas station and parked it. A few hours later, my wife and I went to go get it, didn't know if I would have to push it or tow it, but I turned the key and it started immediately with no whining noise, so I drive it the 20 miles home without incident. The outside temperature yesterday was in the mid 90's and humid, and thinking back to the first time the car did this, the weather and circumstances were almost identical? When used to go to work out, or to work, or just little drives around there seems to be no problem. The car has even run this 45-50 mile round trip without incident numerous times, but at different times of day with cooler temps, and some lengthy waits between driving times.Does this sound like a fuel pump or sensor that could be failing? And why would it only act up under high temp situations? Almost like it was vapor locked, it had plenty of fuel, and didn't make a difference earlier in the heat even opening the gas cap to relieve any pressure? Completely stumped here?

View 5 RepliesMy question is what could cause a high idle?I have a 95 Chevy pickup 4x4 with a 5.7... Recently the lower radiator hose fell came off the radiator, dumping the liquids all over the street. The motor shut down, and every time we went to start it there would be a loud whining/spinning noise. We thought that the motor seized, so we pulled the plugs, turned the motor by the crank bolt.Turned out that the starter went bad, the spindle and bendex werent catching on the flywheel.
After examining the flywheel teeth, and gapping the plugs to the recommended manufacture gap, (they werent when we pulled them), we got a new starter installed. It started right up! But it ran at a high idle, around 1500-2000 RPM. I did not have a chance to really let it warm up (it was cold and raining). Now there is a gray flexhose that is running from the air filter housing down to the exhaust manifold. If i remember correctly, it was not seated very well when I took it off. Could it be causing too much of a vacuum?
According to the manual the high pitch sound is to let driver know that the pads are worn out but i checked and my pad still very thick after 15k miles.?
View 13 RepliesWhen I'm driving at a certain speed (usually between 65-70 mph), my 06 Sonata GLS V6 develops a really soft (but really annoying) high-pitched whine that decreases when you take your foot off the gas. Not much at other speeds (sometimes it will kick in real quick at high rpm before the automatic trans shifts), but when the car hits 66-67 mph that little subtle whine kicks in. By 75 mph, it's gone (I drive 75+). Sounds just like a high-pitched dog whistle.
Not a wind noise....sometimes it sounds like it comes from below me, sometimes it sounds like it's coming from the dash. Dealer don't hear anything (of course), even when I'm in the car with the tech and can hear it (maybe I'm part dog.....who knows).
Here's my guess.......I think that it's the electric fuel pump. Sometimes if I'm outside the car, I'll hear a whine back in the fuel area that is almost the same pitch as the whine I hear at 70. Since the whine varies (or disappears) with engine rpm and application of the gas pedal, my thought is that I'm hearing the fuel pump hit a certain pitch, which causes the whine.
2006 Sonata?
Layely with my 2011 SE I've been getting a low pitch humming noise while traveling at low speeds, mainly going into a stop sign or light and searching for a parking spot. It happens with the AC off as well, not so much a vibration just a low pitch hum, also does it with foot off brake too as I just let it coast. Kind of annoying and want to make sure its good.
View 5 RepliesI have a 2007 Sonata, 2.4L 4cyl. and it is making some weird noise as of late. I have done some research and from what I have read it seems like it may be a bad engine mount. One thing to note is that the noise really only happens when the car is cold and hasn't warmed up yet or on a cold day.
Basically the best description is that the noise is a high-pitched rattle/vibration noise. The noise seems to match the vibrations of the engine but doesn't seem to get more intense if I rev the engine. The noise does get quieter if I put it in neutral but it is still there. The noise also happens even if the car is parked and off, and I do something like shut the door or trunk. I haven't gotten a chance to get in there and look under the hood myself to try...
I have a 1995 Lexus ES300 with 130,000 miles on it. When I reverse, I get a low-pitch growling and as as soon as I apply the brakes by a high-pitch, ungodly screech. This noise is definitely coming from the rear wheel areas. I'm not sure which tire is the culprit (I hear both sides from while listening from both the inside and outside). It happens frequently but is particularly bad on rainy, snowy, misty, or high humidity days. Two years ago I replaced the pads and rotors. At this point, the pads look to have about 40% life on them yet. This problem started happening about a year ago.
My initial thoughts were that it was just rusting because of the frequency on high moisture days. But both noises are way too loud for that. My second speculation was that the emergency brake was catching, but after examining it I think not. I've taken the entire assembly (brakes, rotors calipers, and emergency brake) at each tire apart and looked for any obvious issues that look incorrect. No luck. I've also applied brake quiet with similar results. Now my thoughts are that the low pitch is the rotors being warped. But that doesn't explain the screech and why it only occurs in reverse.
I just purchased a 2011 Hyundai Sonata with 126K miles on it and so far it has been okay. The only thing I noticed is a whining noise when I go to accelerate and the other day I went to put the car into reverse on the odometer it did not display what gear I was in nor did it illuminate on the gear shift whether I was in drive or not.
View 2 RepliesAfter it has been sitting overnight, I hear a somewhat high pitched whine while driving the car. It seems to go away after the car warms up a bit (maybe I can't hear it). Here are a few other details
a. 2006 Sonata 3.3 V6, ~85K miles on the odo
b. Transmission fluid flushed at Valvoline ~2 weeks ago. I changed it at 39K miles when I bought it. Checked at 78k miles and the color was was good (light red).
c. The noise goes up and down with engine rpm. I have a sound (wav) recording of it, but cannot figure how to attach it.
d. I tried putting it in park and neutral and revving the cold engine, but cannot hear the whine-only happens in drive.
e. Engine oil changed every 3-5k (wife drives it, so I'm not always prompt).
It shifts smoothly (always has) and otherwise drives well.
I have 2011 Sonata Ltd. As I cross over 60 mph, I hear a whinning sound from the rear wheels. I have 50K miles on it and is still under warranty. All 4 tyres were recently mounted and balanced by another dealer.
Dealer checked and said it is from tyres, but also said the tyres look good. Rotated the tyres but I am still getting sound from behind. At times it is quite loud.
So when I am decelerating, at about 40mph, I hear this whining "power-down" noise...reminds me of when Obi-Wan disables the tractor beam in the original Star Wars. I did not notice it when I bought the car, but it is very evident now. Hasn't changed any though. Not sure if it's normal Sonata noise, tires, transmission, or what. It appears as I slow down at around 40 mph in the video.

Crossing 90K soon and noticing some vibration in the steering wheel. Have also been trying (in vain) to locate a clicking suspension noise in the rear.
Decided to pop the Red Sled up on stands and tighten stuff up. Few loose nuts in the rear (sway bar end links and the trailing arm bolts) so retorqued those. However, noise has only decreased, not gone away.
In the front, things are even worse. Tie rods are due for replacement (boots broken and right one had water in it) as well as ball joints. But the worse part is that the steering rack is whining when turning in either direction.
Thinking of tackling the front end work aside from alignment. Doesn't look hard so I do not fear that. But the steering rack is another beast entirely.
How steamy the exhaust is right after a cold start? I have always noticed it in my passenger mirror, but yesterday I decided to stand behind the car and watch it right after starting it up, and I actually saw a few puffs of black smoke coming out with the steam. I'm not losing any coolant, so I think all of this must be caused by the engine running extremely rich when cold, the fumes were pretty bad too. Once the idle settles down the black puffs go away, but the steam lasts a good while. I have never had a newer car run so rich that it caused black sooty smoke.
View 2 RepliesI cant start the sonata 2011 unless I keep the start button pressed for 10+ seconds. It just doesn't start anymore by just pressing the brake and hitting start button once. I figured before I replaced the brake light switch, is that's what causing this problem?
View 9 RepliesMy 2011 sonata rattles when starting. It sounds like noisy lifters and quits after 2-3 seconds. It does not do it on the first start-up of the day, but on subsequent starts when the engine is warm.
View 7 RepliesSometimes when I start my car, parking brake light fails to go off. I know this is usually indicative of low brake fluid, but mine is not low. I rarely use the brake so I don't think it's the parking brake switch either as it only happens if the parking brake is not engaged. Never happens on the occasional use of it.
Restarting doesn't seem to work unless I set the brake, restart, then disengage it. Very strange problem. Not a big deal but is a bit perplexing. I never see a CEL or any codes generated at all.
