My 2011 Sonata SE gets a rough idle when my AC is turned on, and sometimes it produces a whirring noise as I'm driving in low gears. It all goes completely away if I turn my AC off. I'm afraid my AC might go out at an inopportune time. What could it be?
View 12 RepliesMy 2011 Sonata 2.4L GDI has already 76k miles. Spark plugs were replaced around 75K miles, Air filter was replaced. Fuel treatment was done several time since ownership, Intake CRC for GDI was used once about 2K miles ago. The car is doing good until recently. When I accelerate the car acceleration goes uneven. It is not like hesitating but you feel like the car is taking it in steps. Sometimes the first run in the morning, the car idle feels a little bit rough but that's only in the morning. It has been like that for a month now. What do you think it can be? No Check engine light, no pending codes and nothing major except that. I really suspect a bad upstream oxygen sensor (Air fuel ratio sensor). What do you think?
A look through the intake shows a very clean intake. No signs for any carbon deposit. A Hyundai dealer checked the car and told me there is nothing to worry about. Just told me to buy more Hyundai fuel treatment (AKA Chevron Techron) which was done and still I feel uneven acceleration.
I had a sensor error which caused my battery to drain. The computer thinks my door is unlocked when it is locked, leaving the door open image on the dashboard. This caused my battery to drain totally. What the damage would be for a new battery and fixing the door sensor ?
View 11 RepliesI have a 2011 Sonata GLS with ~65k miles. I have an intermittent problem with the cranking, but will not start. It sounds like the fuel pump is "whirring" before start, and this only happens once a week or so. Other times, the car starts fine. The gas tank is ~1/4 full also.
There has been another intermittent issue (not sure if it's related) - with the O2 sensor heating coil. The check engine light comes on for a day or two and goes away wit the O2 heater coil problem. However, I'm not sure a sensor coil problem would cause the car to not start when it's cranking.
Could it be the crank sensor issue? Is that issue known to be sporadic?
While driving up a long hill on the highway, one of the cylinders quit firing causing a bad engine vibration and check engine light. I turned around and drove home, pulled the plugs, and found the plug closest to the passenger side had bridged. I'm not sure why; it almost looked like it melted or had some sort of physical damage. This was on a 2013 Sonata Limited 2.0t with 45000 km / 28500 miles.

View 2 RepliesI have a 2014 2.0T and have noticed that my car is making a noise that sounds like a belt squealing. I thought the sound was being produced by the brakes. I only notice when I drive the car from a cold start.
View 1 Replies2011 Elantra Limited, auto, 15,700 miles. Past couple of days I have experienced very rough shifts in all gears. First noticed on Saturday. Drove about 10 miles Saturday morning, then parked until around 4pm. Car started normally but rough shifts for first 5 miles.
It felt like the car would drop out of gear when shifting, then go back into the correct gear. There was definitely a "pause" before it went into gear, like bouncing up a set of stairs. Problem resolved itself and did not reoccur until this afternoon. Car was parked for 1-2 hours. Same rough shifting for 3-4 miles.
Tonight while driving I heard a rattling noise under the engine, come to a stop and the engine cuts off. I pop the hood, get a jump and nothing. So I check the oil and it is dry... I changed it 4 months ago myself, it is a mystery how it leaked. No light came on, no oil leaks anywhere..
Is there any hope in having the engine turn over again? If so how should I go about trying to turn it? Engine only has 61000 miles on it.
I have a 2011 sonata SE w/ 30K miles, the starter failed on me.
The motor would spin but would not engage the gears b/c of the solenoid or the rod malfunctioned.
They towed my car to the dealer for free and it was replaced but I'm concerned because the towing guy told me he towed quite a few Hyundai's b/c of this problem.
I have a 2011 GLS with about 47K.
There seems to be an issue with acceleration around 50-65MPH as the RPMs will jump as if to hesitate between gears (just my assumption). Maybe driving style/conditions as I live in West-Central Florida?
I'm the original owner and we have two of the same vehicles.
2011, GTI MKVI, 36000 Miles. A whirring noise began to occur at about 33,000. I took it into a dealership. They concluded that it was tire noise. So I lived with it for a little while, then replaced all 4 tires with Nitto Motivo (so not an overly aggressive tread). Got the car out on the highway and I'm getting the same noise. Took it in to another dealership, they thought tire noise, but I had informed them that all 4 tires were replaced two days before. Now they are scratching their heads. When I brake between the speeds that the noise occurs I get a slight vibration in the brake pedal. You can feel it in the floor boards, but not in the steering wheel. The noise is coming from the front passenger side.
Fortunately I took it in before exceeding 36k miles, so they kept the ticket open until this is solved. I have read in other threads that people have had similar problems, but they generally have gone away after replacing tires. Could it be a wheel bearing?
My sonata 2012 with 71K km on it just started hard shifting in the morning, after first start. It slamming in D from R very harsh and then shifts all other gears for ~3 minutes harshly (upshift / downshift) and then it gets fine and shifts gears with absolutely no problem throughout the day. Dealer of course was not able to reproduce the problem.
View 37 RepliesMy grand am has a gnarly idle issue. It stalls to turn on and once on it has a very rough idle. When I put the car into drive it stales then just turns off. Drained the heck out of my battery so I was thinking it was an alternator issue but I did a quick test and my alternator seems to be working fine. I did manage to drive my car but once in motion, gears wouldn't shift which has me leading to thinking it can be a transmission issue.

So I have a 2001 VW Jetta Wolfsburg Edition, love the car. So here's my problem, whenever I am driving for more then 20-30 minutes my shifting between gears begins to become more and more rough, like whenever I shift from 2nd to 3rd, it directs me to first gear instead of 3rd and I have to kinda force it into 3rd. This only happens when I am driving for a long period of time, why this is happening? and sometimes when I put it in reverse I get a loud crunch noise but I get it into gear...
View 1 RepliesI've had a loud annoying whirring noise on something connected to my 2009 GLS serpentine belt. Initially, Hyundai said it was the alternator... just recently they said it's the power steering pump. Some friends say it's a bearing. Your guess is as good as mine!
If I replace both the pump and alternator on my own, I'll save more money then letting Hyundai replace one. I haven't seen that many DIY changes on the pump though. I usually don't deal with parts & fluids.

The shifting in my Hyundai Sonata 2009 Limited V6 is horrible, having issues with shifting such as a hard jerk from 1st to 2nd when car changes gears driving. It feels like it is pulling back when the car changes into 3rd gear oh and you can forget trying to go uphill. It is completely horrendous it is shifting always up to 3000+ rpms struggling to make it uphill. Any way to achieve a smoother shift and also towards the uphill thing.
View 4 RepliesI own a 2011 santa fe with approx 49,500 miles. in the past few weeks i have begun hearing a "whirring" (or more like a 'zzzzzzzzzz') noise when turning the steering wheel. I've taken it in to the dealership who tells me this noise is "normal".
This was hard for me to believe since it just started occurring in the past few weeks. I checked P/S fluid before taking to dealership and all was okay. also no leaks seen on garage floor.
Why this noise all of a sudden??
I recently replaced the water pump, timing belt and all other belts in my 2005 Elantra. The car runs great, but there is a whirring/whining noise at idle when I have the car in park and in drive when I'm stopped at a light. You do not hear the noise when I accelerate and you do not hear the noise at any speed above idle.
At idle the whirring/whining noise can be heard whether the A/C is on or off. I have done some research and some causes for a noise like that have been a bad power steering pump, alternator, or pulleys.
The Elantra has 106,300 miles and gives me 26 MPG. I love this car. It has been the most dependable car I have ever owned. I plan to maintain it and hopefully last me for another 100,000 miles.
I had never been in a Prius until I bought my own 12 months ago. A relatively loud whirring noise accompanied me everywhere I went... "Oh, that's just the electric motor doing its thing!" I would tell myself and my unknowing passengers...
It was my TOTALLY shot tires. Oh sure, they had tons of tread life on them upon purchase, but they lasted a scant 22K miles, got horribly scalloped, developed stress cracks between the treads, and aren't even LRR tires! Indeed, beware of the Bridgestone Potenza Grid019.
The three miles it took to drive home on the TrueContacts were an automotive epiphany. I had no freaking idea how quiet this car really was! Even at highway speed! I feel like a fool.
Well, now I've got an LRR tire, a 6 year/90K warranty, and did it for about 400 total. Shipped to my door for about 350, local place mounted and balanced them for 50.
