i just realized that when i apply my paddle emergency (parking) brake, the light on dash does not come ON. However when i turn the key on i can see there is parking brake light on dash and it also comes on.
Why its not showing the light when the parking brakes are engaged ? is it safe ? is it could be a fuse or cable from lever?
I am a new driver and I made the following mistake twice.
Twice over the last month, after street parallel parking, engaging the foot parking brake, turning off and exiting the car, I noticed the spacing from the front and back car is a bit off so I went back inside the car to move the car slightly.
However, I forgot to disengage the parking brake first, so I put the car into R, and when the car did not move, I tapped on the accelerator. Only then did I remember to disengage the parking brake.
If I just tapped on the accelerator slightly, does it damage my car? I haven't noticed any problems yet, but I feel terrible about the screw ups.
My parking brake light came on while driving. The car would coast at a low speed OK, so I think the brake was not on.
This happened in Yellowstone National Park at altitudes above 7,600 ft. and happened 4,000 miles ago and hasn't happened since. Taking the car in for an oil change today and I am going to ask about it.
I meant to ask a while ago if other people hear it too, it's right after you park and turn off your car you step out and can hear the metal ticking/clanking/tapping sounds from all over the car. I hear it all seasons, cold or hot days.
Is this just steel parts like the exhaust tubes cooling down? I never heard this much on other cars I've had so that's why it seems strange to me.
Whenever I park on an incline whether it's upward or downward the car seems to roll about an inch or so after engaging the parking brake and then taking my foot slowly off the brakes. When I engage the parking brake I have the transmission set in neutral so the weight of the car doesn't put stress on it.

View 5 RepliesMy 2008 Prius has been sitting for about 25 days while I've been out of town. I just tried to drive it, but it feels like the parking brake is engaged even though I've pushed it off (and the lights are showing it is off).
A bit more detail: Car has been parked on a relatively steep incline (maybe 35 degrees) for about 25 days (this is its normal parking spot). Parking brake was engaged during this time. Weather is mild to warm (it's Hawaii). When I try to back up it feels like there is something behind the one of the rear tires, and the car almost starts to lift up a bit. (But there's nothing there that I can see.) I might have been able to push the gas a bit more, but was afraid of damaging something. When I put the car in drive and take my foot off the brake it rolls slightly (and very slowly forward), but not nearly what it should (I'm afraid to push the gas at all because there is a wall very close to the front of my car).
Seems like maybe the brake is stuck or something of the sort...
I have bi-xenon lamps and DRLs. The manual states that the DRLs are supposed to turn off when the transmission is in Park and the parking brake is engaged. My DRLs do NOT turn off.
So, my question is: Do your DRLs turn off when the car's in Park and the parking brake is engaged?
So my parking brake doesn't engage when the lever is pulled. The light lights up on the dash saying the parking brake is engaged but the brake I not engaged. It hasn't been a huge problem for me since my Jetta is a 6-speed but I would like to fix it some time soon. Looking for a DIY? I did a quick search and didn't find anything really.

View 5 RepliesThe parking brake lever on my '05 Escape will not budge, is there a simple solution to this problem or do I most likely need the whole cable assembly replaced? Is there any particular spot on the cable that's most susceptible to seizing from rust that I could soak with penetrating oil to free it up? I know the inner cable comes out of the coiled metal, conduit-like outer part and is exposed where it attaches to the rear brakes. Is this most likely the spot that's causing the problem?
View 8 RepliesI noticed an increasingly loud noise when my GX 470 is in motion. It isn't tied to engine speed, so I figure it probably has something to do with the wheels.
I jacked up the vehicle and spun each wheel independently in neutral. Front wheels were fine. Rear driver's wheel was fine. Rear passenger's wheel - fine with parking brake disengaged. But with brake engaged, you can spin the wheel backward but not forward.
I have a 2002 Prius with about 150,000 miles on it. A couple weeks ago, I noticed that the parking brake light on my instrument cluster didn't light up when I engaged it. Soon, all 10 bars on the fuel gauge started blinking. The seat belt reminder, open door warning, and headlight indicator lights aren't working, either. Any clues as to what could be causing all these malfunctions, or have I had more than one problem develop in close succession?

About two weeks ago I get this strange error message about my P Lock mechanism and how I need to be parked on a flat surface with the parking brake fully engaged. The car wouldn't start, just a bunch of warning lights. Finally I replaced the 12v battery at the dealership.

View 1 RepliesI know- another noise diagnosis thread but I'm very confused and worried about these noises coming from the front of my car. It's a creaking noise that's most noticeable when I engaged the brakes. I first assumed it was an engine mount- hopefully it is. I'm replacing my vf dogbone bushings before Tod. But this doesn't sound like rubber creaking, by metal. Like the chassis by the strut mounts. I hope it's nothing regarding the v3's. Maybe it's something with the brakes? I also hear I slightly when going over speed bumps. Again, I doesn't sound like the rubbery rear sway creaking. What could be the cause? I'm replacing the pads and fluid before Tod as well..
View 22 RepliesAs I've been doing work on the rear struts I noticed drag on the rear wheels when the car is jacked up. It's definitely the brakes. At first I dismissed it thinking it was the rotor going out of alignment when the tension from the wheel lug nuts is released (I don't have the retaining screws on the rotor). I can turn the wheels by hand but there is definite resistance.
However, yesterday I asked someone to listen to the rear wheels while the engine was off and the car was moving slowly. They could hear the sound of pads against the rotors. There is no smell nor do I notice any extra heat.
The caliper pistons move very easily and I'm fairly confident they're not stuck. The rotors and pads are in great shape. So I'm assuming it's an issue with the parking brake cable. But, I don't even know where to start. The parking brake seems to work fine otherwise.
My 2005 Toyota Prius gave me confidence. Here's what happened:
I was driving on the Interstate with the cruise control set at 70 mph. Seeing traffic stopped ahead, I applied the brakes for a moment to slow, then released the brake to coast. Much to my surprise, the cruise control was still engaged and the car accelerated. I applied the brakes again, manually turned off the cruise control, then was able to coast. I drove for another half-hour without incident until the following afternoon when I drove again, experiencing a much more serious problem.
I had just turned left, and was straightening the wheels when I heard, and felt, a loud "snap" in the steering wheel, immediately upon which I knew the steering wheel was disconnected and I could no longer steer the car. Very, very fortunately, and only because I was already nearly stopped, I was able to stop the vehicle without incident.
However, I immediately recognized that, had this happened in almost any other scenario than being nearly parked, the outcome would have been markedly different. The steering wheel is completely loose, not controlling anything, and all the many steering wheel controls are equally disconnected, including the driver's air bag (SRS), something that I would have needed, but wouldn't have worked, had I crashed into oncoming traffic or an Interstate median.
I have the above mentioned car with 50876 miles. I noticed that the steering wheel causes a click in the suspension when turned left or right whether stationary or with the brakes engaged. Also I noticed a thump felt through the steering wheel while doing the same action. What could be causing it, I checked my power steering pump and the fluid is brownish-red in color and no leaks are visible either on the ground or around the pump. I also got under the car and there seems to be no leaky CV boots ( i had to look these up to know what they look like).
