Sonata NF (2006-10) :: Whining Noise Coming From Cabin Air Filter Area
Oct 4, 2010
I bought the car with it a bit over 3 months ago, that was the only problem and simply couldn't pass the deal. Even used car dealer didn't know what it was.
You can only hear it when you go over 50-55+ mph and it comes from cabin air filter area.
I already changed cabin air filter, the other day I replaced filter tray as well due to broken clips. Cleaned the whole area real good and still can't get it to stop whining.

I notice it now for awhile this whining noise coming from the engine. It sounds like bearing noise to me. The car is still under warranty till 12 Oct 13. So if needs a fix, it have to happen soon.

So I've been getting that nasty, musky odor in my 2006 Sonata. I just purchased it used last December, so don't know when the cabin air filter was last changed. I had to do this with my Camry not too long ago, so I still have the spray to try on it if the filter isn't too old/dirty. The problem:
When I lowered the glovebox to get to the cabin air filter, one of the tabs was broken off. I figured no big deal. I pressed on the other three and they all broke off. My husband tried to get it out, but no luck. I'm afraid of damaging it if I try to pry it out and even if I succeed, do I have to do that every time I need to get to the filter? Where I would find a new housing?

It's literally like under the car just before the rear tires in the middle area.

I have a 2006 sonata gls 3.3l v6. There is a whining/slight squeaking noise coming from the drive belt when i turn the car on. When the noise started it would only occur when turning with the AC or Heat on. It then escalated to whenever i started the car and would go away after driving for a while. Now the noise continues even after a drive sometimes..
I've been told by a mechanic friend that the belt looks ok. So my plan is to take the passenger side tire off and the splash guard on that side to get at the tensioner for the belt. Once I have the belt off i plan on turning the various pulleys that the serpentine belt goes on to see if i can figure out which one is making the noise. How to pinpoint where the noise is coming from?
Here's a link to a youtube video I put up with the noise my car is making ............ YouTube

I have a very slight grinding noise coming from the PS pulley area. Its possibly bearing noise although its hard to say. Is there a specific torque requirement. Any good parts...

It's a 2006 hyundai sonata LX.
Now Is it anything I should worry about? Car has 72000 on it. Always used synthetic Mobil 1 5w 30.
This is on a completely cold start up, 30 degrees outside. Only makes the noise until car warms up. Anything I can do to prevent this? Or is it not something to worry about? Should I just let the car warm up a little before I drive it?

This time it's about my tranny. After putting on 034 motorsport track density mounts, this whining noise started coming apparent and it's pretty loud and it's coming from the tranny area. Not sure of the fact that the mounts are so stiff has anything to do with it, but here goes...
It's like a slight grinding/mechanical whine noise that happens only when in gear and under load. It gets louder as the speed/rpm's get higher and happens in every gear. Funny, but sounds like a mechanical supercharger whine that you'd get from a supercharged car. When the car is idling, there is nothing wrong/no noise.
Clutch is not slipping, power feels just like it did before, my clutch pedal doesn't get stuck nor is it hard to push down.
A few initial diagnoses from friends were that there is some sort of shaft play in the tranny or that it may very well be a synchro.

I just bought a 2006 (mk2) Santa Fe 2.2 CDX manual.Overall I'm pleased with the car but I have noticed over the past week of ownership a whining noise coming from under the floor area towards the front (I think). The noise only occurs around the 20mph mark ( no other speed) and is there whether I'm in gear or just coasting. The car has done 43000 (so not high mileage) has a full service history and only one owner prior to me. It does have a tow bar (which I wanted) just I case this may be relevant.

About month ago, my cabin lights stopped coming on when I open the door. I can turn the lights on, so it is not bulbs. It's a pain to come home at night and not have the lights come on for a few minutes as I get out of the car.

I have a 2007 Hyundai Sonata 2.4l GLS. Staring to get an little noise from the engine about a few days ago. The noise what can only describe as a whirring sound and while in the cabin it sounds like it's coming from the right side and in the engine area, especially after a cold start and during acceleration. It is not very loud(have to turn stereo off to hear it and it only last for a couple of seconds as far as I know. My car now has about 240,000kms on it, and since the noise is coming from that area I am guessing it's a pulley of some sort. Serpentine belt was changed last year. What this noise is? I was thinking it might be the belt tensioner, probably should have changed it during my belt change.

So I already changed the Driver Side upper Control arm. But there is still squeaky noises coming from the trunk area, esp at low speeds going over small hills and small pot holes. I saw this is common on our cars and wanted to know which parts were to be replaced. At 110k, is it worth repairing piece by piece or should I do the shocks, ball joints and such at once.

My front end has given out. Getting a crunching sound that sounds like it is coming from the tire/wheel well area. With an 06 which has only 39,000 miles and an extended warranty until 2016 the Dealer just replaced the Strut Mounts? Sounded good, did no good. I'm going back soon, but shouldn't they have replaced the shocks and springs too? It sounds like the tires are rubbing while going over bumps, with a tearing crunch. I have known every noise in my Sonata since it came off the boat from Alabama and the car only got better over time. Since this noise seemed to happen on both sides all at once, what can it be? I did hear some noises V33 had posted, but it didn't sound the same as this screeching crunching new noise?

Have a 2007 3.3/V6. Had whining noise in steering. Replaced reservoir and fluid. Still has noise and steering is worse. Probably will replace pump next as it has 220k miles. Alldata shows the pump being located on top of motor near reservoir which is incorrect. Appears to be on bottom of engine close to firewall. Is this correct? Do you have to remove plastic wheel well to get to it?

Maybe I'm paranoid but after changing just the oil filter, the engine started to make nasty noises for 5 seconds. Could this be symptoms of a dry startup? If you didn't read the thread, I changed the oil filter only because the Bosch oil filter was making my engine noisy. I changed to OEM Hyundai filter. I even put engine oil in the filter before inserting it into the engine. Does dry startup happen to all cars after changing the oil filter?
I came across another thread this morning after encountering the same issue with a Bosch filter (the cloth one) It doesn't have a lip on the top/bottom and uses a fiber on both ends instead (Which I'm assuming is causing a dry start). I also encountered some nasty noise on startup after installing this filter for the first time (usually use WIX/Fram Extra Guard) as per availability. Bosch just has a different design (cloth on the ends compared to plastic lip). I suppose I'll be picking up a new filter after class today.

After last oil change the car started leaking oil from the oil filter area. I went to the dealer a few times and finally they replaced the oil filter (that's what they told me) and it stopped. Fast forward to today....
I changed the oil again and remembering the last time I wiped the oil filter dry and made sure it's not leaking. Today I drove to work and when I got here my oil filter was wet and oily.. so I took a few pics with my phone. Need to identify where this leak is coming from?

After it has been sitting overnight, I hear a somewhat high pitched whine while driving the car. It seems to go away after the car warms up a bit (maybe I can't hear it). Here are a few other details
a. 2006 Sonata 3.3 V6, ~85K miles on the odo
b. Transmission fluid flushed at Valvoline ~2 weeks ago. I changed it at 39K miles when I bought it. Checked at 78k miles and the color was was good (light red).
c. The noise goes up and down with engine rpm. I have a sound (wav) recording of it, but cannot figure how to attach it.
d. I tried putting it in park and neutral and revving the cold engine, but cannot hear the whine-only happens in drive.
e. Engine oil changed every 3-5k (wife drives it, so I'm not always prompt).
It shifts smoothly (always has) and otherwise drives well.

2006 Sonata 3.3 V6 with 101,000 miles. At a cold start there is a loud whining noise coming from the engine on the passenger side. After the car warms up the whining goes away. The car has not had any noise before. It is progressively getting worse.

Where another 09 owner had what he thought was a cold weather related squeak coming from the passenger side dash / windshield area. Mine does this and it's highly annoying. Here's what I've observed:
- seems to happen in cold temps, though I can't say what "cold" is...<40F perhaps?
- noticeable over bumps or whenever the car frame twists as a result of uneven road surface
- source seems to be the dash / windshield interface on the passenger side
- it's *possible* it may be coming from the top of the windshield as well
- it's very noticeable and highly irritating
Either with an 09 or earlier model? I cut a pool noodle and shoved it down between the glass and dash hoping the pressure would relieve whatever is rubbing. It appeared to work until the temps dropped into the 20s. Then it returned. I have a 2009 GLS, 5MT Sonata.
