Sometimes my steering wheel squeaks. It sounds like plastic rubbing against plastic. The first dealership said the compartment under the steering wheel was rubbing against the column or something inside and that they made an adjustment and the sound stopped. It didn't. The second dealership told me they couldn't figure it out unless they heard the sound. Since it's not every time I drive, sure enough it made no noise at the dealership that day. The head of the shop looked into it and couldn't figure it out. He dry-lubed behind the steering wheel to get to a spring back there. He did the same for where the steering column comes into the car at the bottom of the car. Good for a few days. Squeaking back today.
View 9 RepliesI ask this because when on the hwy (60-70mph) you can feel some vibration in your hands. I can let the steering wheel go and it won't move a bit but when hands placed on it you can definitely feel the road, including bumps, and regardless of road conditions. Tires where balanced at 7500mi but it still happens. Regardless of temperature or PSI in the tire.
I thought we had electric/electronic steering and no hydraulics? Maybe unrelated but, when turning in my driveway, very slow, I can hear a slight clicking (maybe rubbing) noise coming from the steering wheel column. Everything else has to be silent to be able to hear it.
I have that annoying squeal when I start my car and when I turn my steering wheel (also noticed I can't turn the wheel very well as it feels dodgy, as in the belt catches then lets go if that makes sense). Now once the car warms up it usually doesn't happen again but obviously I want to rectify this as my car draws enough attention at start up but this is getting ridiculous. I checked my power steering fluid and it's bad, brown and has some sediment so it needs changing for sure but here's my problem;
How do I check things to make sure I don't get ripped off at the mechanic? I'm sure a power steering flush and re-tightening of the belt will probably fix it as I've only but 40K on the belts since ikilledbarbie and I changed all of them out. Whay I don't want to have happen is go in and hear "oh you need to replace XYZ" when the problem really is only ABC if you catch my drift.
since the cooler weather, i have noticed a short squeal on start after sitting for a while and a squeal when i turn the steering wheel to full lock either direction. question, is the squeal at full lock normal for our cars?
another question, when adjusting the ps belt, do you all use a tool to put tension on the belt till you tighten it or do you just pull back with your hand? I am thinking and hoping the belt just needs a tad more tension on it.
i replaced belts about 2 months ago with gates brand- replaced originals with 30k miles on them. I had squeaking before while running which the belt change fixed.
2007 Sonata SE, 74,000 miles
Just took the car in for brake service (not the dealership) because of what I was convinced was a brake pad sensor warning sound - something I've heard with other cars I've had, and been correct about. However, the tech said the pads were fine.
The sound is a high pitched squeal, intermittent, coming from the passenger front wheel. It can be heard when coasting at moderate speed (30 mph or so), not so much when accelerating, and especially when turning left. It got worse today, with a low grinding sound at moderately slow braking speed that started after about two hours of start and stop driving (house hunting). The car has needed a couple re-alignments and will have to get checked for possible camber? adjustment (rear tires wore badly on outside edges, far less pronounced on front tires). Car has tendency to pull to the right.
Any thoughts on a main culprit here for the squealing-grinding noise or about the possible inter-relatedness of symptoms.
I recently had new rims and winter tires installed on my 2007 Hyundai Sonata 4Cyl from Walmart. When I left I noticed I had a vibration in the steering wheel at around 50-70 km/h so I took it back the next day and got them rebalanced. After the rebalancing I asked the tech. if it was off and he did say they were just a little bit off.
I took it out for a drive and the vibration is gone from 50-70km/h, now it is vibrating from 70-120km/h. I was about to take it back for another balancing, but as I was driving home today and had the car on cruise control and cruising at about 110-120km/h I noticed the vibration would go away sometimes to virtually nothing, then come back with very noticeable vibration.
So now I am beginning to think it has nothing to do with the balancing of the wheels but maybe something in my suspension. I am getting some clunking sounds when I hit bumps and you can feel it through the drivers floor, pedals and steering wheel. I had friends tell me that it may be a tie rod end or strut mounts.
I was sitting in a parking lot waiting for someone for about 2 mins when I went to drive away I turned the steering wheel and the car stalled. This never happened to me before it has not happened again yet. I did also have the A/C on if this makes a difference. I figure the ac clutch engaged at that same time or some fluke thing happened.
View 4 RepliesI have two Sonatas, an 08 and 09 both limited and both 4 cylinders. On the 09 I treated myself to a custom leather and wood steering wheel. I disconnected the battery and let the car sit for a couple hours before starting swap. Then took my time and disconnected all wires and used a puller to remove the old wheel. Transferred the cruse and radio switches to the new wheel and reassembled in the reverse of removal. No issues everything went smooth. Reconnected the battery and started the car now the airbag light is on The light comes on when you initially turn the key goes off for about five or six seconds and then comes back on when engine is running. I did a search with no luck. I will disassemble and recheck everything.
View 10 RepliesI have a 2006 LX with 25k miles.. within the past 1,500 miles or so, I notice there is a squeaking/creaking/rubbing sound coming from the steering wheel column when I turn (and cut, specifically) the wheel at stopped and low speeds (such as pulling out of the driveway or maneuvering into a parking spot). At faster speeds this doesn't happen.
I intend on bringing this to the dealer. What should I expect, and should I bring this in ASAP?
My wife drives our 2007 Sonata Limited every day. Over the past year, she has complained to me a few times that the steering locks up on her when she is exiting the freeway. The wheel is just stuck after a few seconds she can turn it and make the exit. I have driven it many many times and have never experienced it. It had new rotors & tires put on and after that, it seemed to stop. That was 6 months ago.
well tonight she said it happened again when she got off the freeway but this time it was at the stop light when she went to turn. Said it was stuck and again after trying to force it to turn it finally turned. I am concerned about her driving it since it is dangerous but since it only odes it out of the blue it's very hard to diagnose. I am thinking it may be that steering sensor that controls the fluid pressure but I don't just want to start changing things since I will not know if that is the problem due to a number of times the problem has occurred.
I just bought a 2008 Sonata GLS 2.4L, 4-cyl., automatic, 74000 miles.
I found that the steering wheel, sometimes the seat, vibrates at idle in "D" and "R". And the vibration reduces a lot in "N".
Is this common for this model? If it's not common, how to repair this problem?
Had the car at the dealer over the weekend for oil change. Told them I was hearing a squeak when turning the wheel, not just when it is cold. Anyway they told me that my rack is leaking and they ordered a rack and P/S Pump for some reason? Does that seem normal at 38,000 miles. Also I asked if when they replace the rack do the align it, answer was no, even though parts are under warranty. I drive mostly highway but maybe 2 miles in the city where the roads have been pretty bad while construction is going on, Not sure if that hurt the rack or something else. The dealer hit me I think at 15,000 mi to change the P/S Oil for some reason, so it is all covered but I just think it is odd to go that suddenly. What next? I don't abuse the car at all.
2009 Sonata SE V6
Lately I've been noticing an Intermittent/random steering wheel whine. It happens rarely, but as of late I heard it a couple times. I checked the fluid and its topped off. Car has about 85k on it. I'm not sure when it was last replaced.
I'm thinking My next step would be changing the fluid. What is the actual procedure for doing this? Also, if I do go ahead and change the fluid and still get a whine here and there. What would be my next step?
This has happened multiple times but this last time was the dangerous one. I was driving home from work on Friday on the tollway which is very straight but does have some slight turns in it (construction). So I am at highway speeds for some time and one of these slight turns comes up. I try to turn my wheel but nothing happens. I apply more and more force until it finally decides to turn and by that time I am applying so much force, it jerks really hard. If the car didn't finally decide to turn, I would have hit the highway barrier. I am lucky that no one was next to me or I might have hit them.
-This only happens at sustained highway speeds, city driving is perfect.
-It doesn't happen every time I am on the highway, it is intermittent.
-It does not have a bias with regard to direction (left turn or right).
-I have put some Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF in my reservoir to add fluid to my system with whatever was currently in there when I bought the car @ 75K miles. Car currently has 130K miles. Is there some sort of write up for PS maintenance/flush? I need to pull the return to drain, right?
-I do have a rubber on rubber squeak sound in the front right when I go over a bump.
I get a grinding or whirring sound when I turn my steering wheel left or right. I gets worse if press the accelerator pedal. I believe it has something to do with the power steering but I don't know how to troubleshoot the issue....

View 11 RepliesWe recently purchased our 17 year old son a 97 celica, Problem, when he goes out in the morning to start it, it sounds like a is belt squealing really really bad. We changed the tensioner and it stopped for about a week and then returned. We sprayed the belt with belt dressing to determine which belt it was, one at a time, it was the one that goes to the alternator, so we put a new belt on it, the sound stopped this time for a few days and returned.
This happens whether it is wet or dry, but seems to be worse when dry. The sound lasts for a few minutes and usually goes away. I thought it sounded (the actual sound) like power steering. The sound does get worse when we turn the steering wheel, then when the steering wheel is straightened it goes away. My son said now it periodically will do it will drive for no apparent reason and go away.
Over the last few days, I've noticed that my steering wheel makes a rubbing / vibrating sound as I turn the wheel and press the brakes. This is happening as I'm pulling in or out of a parking spot, or when I slow down to take a wide turn.
View 4 RepliesI picked up a '99 Passat 2.8 GLX tonight and the steering is making a loud squeal and groan when I turn the steering wheel. I checked the fluid and it's brown. I've owned a lot of VW's and Audi's and I've never seen brown fluid in one. I checked for a leak but there's so much oil everywhere from where the previous owner just had the cam seals, timing belt, water pump, and a bunch of other stuff changed. The level looks good, but it's just nasty and loud.
