So at cold start, my my car squeals but once I drive for a mile, it goes away. I think it is the belt. How can I test it to see.
As well, seems like it runs a little rough right now when I am sitting idle at a stop light. Could the belt be causing this?
Wheel bearing replacement. I think my drivers side is shot. Making clucking and squealing noises if driven around town. Doesn't sound bad on the highway.
View 49 RepliesI just had all my belts changed on my 2009 elantra. Now when I start my car it makes a loud squealing noise. it goes away after about 1 minute, we took the belt off that controls the air conditioning and still squealing.
View 2 RepliesI've brought it to the dealer and mechanically, they can find nothing wrong with it. Their hunch is the hood deflector/bug deflector at the front of the car.
It just sounds really embarrassing as the sound is loud and I can hear it in the car with windows closed and no radio. I don't want to take off the deflector because I think it looks good.
I have a 2007 Hyundai Accent automatic. For the past few months, every time I start up my car it makes a horrible squealing sound. This sound also occurs when I'm backing out of my parking space and when I do turns. A few times when I'm doing turns the steering seems to lock up a bit and it gets really difficult to steer. I had numerous people check under the hood and they say that the pulley is seizing every time I turn the steering wheel left or right while it's making that squealing noise. I have had all three belts replaced and a new alternator installed last year. The belts have been checked numerous times since they been replaced. The power steering fluid has been a changed as well. Do I need a new steering pump? Or is the problem something else.

Also I get squealing on the front end whenever I start up. Usually neither happen if I just stop for a minute and start driving again, it's just the first drive of the day when it happens usually. I'm guessing a belt but really not sure..

Whenever it gets driven through a puddle (big, small, paddling pool, etc.) it will make this high pitch squealing noise, and then when it gets shut off after driving through said puddle, will have trouble starting. (It will turn over, catch, run for .2 seconds & then the engine will cut out, but all the electronics will work) THEN! if you can get it started, it needs to be reeved constantly or it will stall when it idles. Lastly, if the conditions are ridiculously horrible, & you need to go some place, you have to '2 foot drive' the little beauty to whereever you're going. Now, she's been in to see the Ford mechanics and has 'stumped' them.

I have a 2008 Hyundai Sonata GLS. Recently there has been a squealing noise coming from the pulley on the power steering pump. I would start when the car was cold but then go away when the engine warmed up. Lately it is squealing continuously. It does not get more intense when I turn, it just seems to be there constantly now. If this is the pump or just an idler pulley?
View 4 RepliesI took my 2010 Sonata GLS (86K miles) into the shop last Thursday for an alignment and new front brakes since the old ones were on the wear indicators and doing some squealing/squeaking on soft left turns. Got a call from the mechanic who said the rotors were also shot, so I had them replaced as well.
On my normal commute on Monday and Tuesday this week (approx 10 miles, 95% highway), I noticed that when the car was moving at 15mph or less in a straight line both front wheels were making a noticeable high-pitched squeal/squeak, which went away with increased speed and when braking. I figured it might be a break-in issue but when it hadn't improved by yesterday I made an appointment to have the car checked out by the mechanic again today.
Got the car back today and the same sound is still happening, though now it's in the 60mph range and seems to come and go regardless of wheel direction. The mechanic said he took the brakes apart, found no issues but cleaned and lubed everything as a precaution.
I'm starting to wonder if its the bearings that are shot, but the sound hasn't remained constant as I would expect with a bearing issue. All the parts used are under warranty, so the next step I have available here is to have the brakes and rotors replaced.
After driving my 2007 sonata for around 10 minutes, there is a very high pitched squealing sound that is intermittent and stops when the brakes are tapped. I was told it may be due to a "brake sensor"??
View 20 RepliesI just bought a 2006 Sonata LX V6 a few days ago and in almost every way it seems like a great car. My '08 GLS V6 which gave me 150k great miles got totaled in November, which really sucks, but I wanted to find another '06-'08 V6. I noticed when I started it for the test drive that the car made a bit of a grinding noise on start up. I didn't think much of it and figured that the warranty from the dealership would cover any problems.(I probably should've checked earlier, but the dealership's warranty only covers cam and lifter noise and engine failure) After I looked into the issue more, I found out that it is a fairly common problem on the early 3.3's with the timing chain tensioners. I'm pretty concerned based on just the nature of the repairs and the cost I've seen for them.
I'm the third owner so the 5 year/60k warranty is expired, but I know there is a TSB out for the issue. I can't find the TSB anywhere but I've heard to have it repaired the car has to make the noise on start, sit 10 minutes, and make the noise again. If it does, the oil needs to be changed and the test repeated again. Since I'm running Hyundai 5W-20 and an OEM filter already, I tried the test on my own. It made the noise on start, sat 10 minutes, and made it again. It is only for a couple seconds, but it's still concerning to me. I guess what I'm trying to ask is if what I've described is covered under the TSB. I really don't wanna have to worry about something like that right now, so my next question is whether the issue I have is detrimental to the motor. My worst fear would be to have the chain jump a cog on the cam gear and slam valves into pistons.
2008 SONATA i4. The transmission started to whine a lot when first driven when cold, well transmission was replaced under warranty due to "pump failure"? I noticed that the loaner car I received for tranny replacement had a knock at startup so I called and told the dealership about it, they said it was the timing chain, it was a v6, oddly it didn't sound like timing chain to me, started after fast idle and went away within about 100 feet of driving.
2 days after I got my car back it would knock after I started it up cold when it came down off fast idle, and would knock for about 100 feet of driving or so, then the knock would disappear until the next cold start. exactly like the loaner V6. Well took my car in to have it looked at, got another loaner, 09 sonata I4, same knock, service couldn't replicate problem with my car.
Went ahead and got oil change, drove car home and the next day it had the same knock at startup when cold. Just took it back to dealership to have them look at irregular tap/knock when warm at idle, also car still has startup knock, but just not as loud.
Need to determine the noise before I took the vehicle in to be serviced. I don't know if I would necessarily describe this as grinding...to me it doesn't sound like metal on metal..but it's not normal.
Only happens on a cold startup, and even then it hasn't been 100% of the time...probably 80% of the time though.

I am having a new problem with a clunk when I brake my 2009 Sonata. It only happens the first 1-2 times I brake while going forward. In other words, I back my car down my driveway, no clunk. Then when I drive down my street, the first 1-2 times I brake it will start slowing and then suddenly I will feel the brakes grab and it feels like a clunk (although now real audible cluck, just the feeling). after the clunk my car continues to slow as normal. The rest of my ride I do not feel it. After I get out of work, it does the same thing as I am headed home.
I have never felt this before, and find it strange that it only happens after the car has been sitting a while and goes away after 1-2 brakings.
I have a 2008 Hyundai Sonata 2.4l with ~235,000kms (~147,000 miles). It has been well maintained and has been a great car. It has been developing an engine tick noise at cold startup and it seems to be very gradually getting worse over time. This noise is most evident immediately after strarup and gradually dimishes over a period of about a minute and varies in terms of how noisy it is and how long it lasts. This nopise is never heard when the engine is warm. From what I have read online, this can be caused mainly by two things:
- use of an aftermarket oil filter
- timing chain tension insufficient
Late last week I changed the oil filter out from the Purolator Classic filter that I have been using for years to a genuine Hyundai oil filter. This did not make any noticeable change in the tick noise so I do not believe that this was a contributing factor.
Over the weekend I removed the valve cover and checked the timing chain tension. It was taught as it should be. I could push it down a bit between the camshafts but it would spring right back up. I also used a videoscope to look down inside the cam tunnel and found no evidence of the timing chain contacting any metal or the oil drip line for the lower timing chain sprocket. Everything appeared to be in order.
When I started the engine to confirm no leaks around the valve cover, I used a mechanic's stethoscope to check for the noise. I was unable to isolate it as the engine tick did not occur at that time. The cause of the tick noise continues to elude me, but I have ruled out the two common causes (oil filter and timing chain tension).
Occasionally when i start my Ex, there will be NO tach reading (0 RPM) and NO fuel gauge reading (E). The Temp and Oil gauges will work fine though.
After a min or so, they come to life and move normally. This happens intermittently.
2001 V10 4x4 Limited.
The car has a rattling sound on start up and I read here that is the timing chain tensioner. The quotes for fixing it has been huge(from 900-2000 just for labor).
And I changed front struts and had Monroe put on the car, the ride is very soft and a bit bouncy. I had a 2004 Altima and the ride was very stiff and I loved it. By the way, the car is a 2006 V6 with 111000miles.
I hear a squeaking noise when I start my car. It is mostly in the mornings. Sometimes other parts of the day also. I believe it is on cold start because I usually hear it when the car has been sitting for a few hours.
My first thought was that it may be the belt so I popped the hood and looked at it. The belt seemed nice and tight and there were no cracks or extensive wear on it.
Second thought was brakes. My front brake pads are good but rear brake pads are close to needing replacement. Sometimes when I brake I hear the squeaking noise but it is hard to tell because at time it feels like it is coming from other cars.
Could the brakes be the cause of this sound? Even though it is at start up and not constant.
Car is 2007 Sonata with 100k+ miles on it.
I have a '06 sonata 3.3 v6. Let me first describe what was happening to the car before the noise started. When I first started the car and put the ac, the first time turning the steering wheel in either direction the steering wheel would tighten up and the battery indicator light would come on and the fasten seatbelt light would flash even though I had the belt fastened. It would only happen the first time I would make a turn and after that I could turn with no problem. So in recap, it would only happen on the first turn and only when the ac was on. Now when I start the car up there is a noise coming form the pulley/belt area. I wouldn't classify it as a squeaking noise more like a grinding. I've looked at the belt and it seems to be fine. After I start to drive the car the noise goes away. If I start the car again after a drive within about 2 hours the noise doesn't happen when I start it. What this noise could be? and also could the noise and the steering wheel tightening when the ac is on be connected?
