I have a 2010 Sonata 2.4 with 63k miles and auto trans. Just recently I have noticed a single soft click when braking, just before the car comes to a dead stop. I can hear the click and also feel it in the gearshift.
View 4 RepliesI have a 2006 hyundai sonata, which has possibly the worst designed cup holder of all time. Because of this awful design flaw, I stopped my car at a light yesterday and some of my coffee spilled into the gear shift box. Now when I am in regular D, it appears the car stays in 1st gear. This sonata also has the option of pushing the stick to the right so you can manually shift gears.. I think it's called sports mode or something. When I try that, I can shift it up to 2nd, but I drops right back down to 1. I left it overnight, hoping it was just some wet electronics and would dry, but this morning the problem persists. Not sure if there's a fix for this, if I should take it to a transmission place, or just my regular mechanic. Someone suggested contact cleaner, which I might have I just have to look.

I had reported this grinding noise when I turn left a month back. Was thinking because of my worn out tyres, but apparently not.
I had to stop quick today. My ice water spilled into the gear shift lever. A mile down the road my rpms went up high and the car barely moving.

This morning the Shift Knob made a click every time I selected a gear, for about an hour, then it went away.
It was colder than almost ever here (Berkeley, CA) last nite, 30F. But there was no click back in '05 at 10F (in Prudhoe Bay, AK).
Mechanics (even the dealership!) say not to worry--probably a plastic part--just advised me to shift gently.
Heard this really soft click-then-whistle coming from the dash area, usually shortly after starting the car? I hear it pretty regularly, it doesn't sound *bad* or *wrong*, it is just a really curious sound. Very mechanical in nature, sounds like a small hydraulic or air supply line, almost like a little relief valve. There's no whoosh of air, just kind of a really faint whistle, but very mechanized.
View 24 RepliesMy 2016 Outback, 10K miles, occasionally does a weird thing. The dealer is far from us, so I'm putting off taking it in, especially since they will be unable to reproduce this. Every now and then when I try to start it, it does not crank. The dash lights all come on, and dim when I turn it to the start position. But instead of cranking, it just does a soft stuttering click, exactly as if the battery were nearly dead. But if I try a few times, suddenly it cranks perfectly and starts right up.
View 15 RepliesI took the starter off over last weekend, tested it and it was working. I can hear a click every time I turn the key in the ignition but nothing after. The first time that happen I couldn't move the stick either. I change the brake light switch now it seems that I can move the shift freely but still doesn't start. In Park or Neutral I can hear a click, if I put in gear and try to start I hear nothing. So I'm thinking that it cannot be the switch Park/Neutral not working because I would not hear a click anytime.
View 7 RepliesI have a 2006 Sonata v6 with about 140k. The other day, I tired starting the car and I heard a "click" but no cranking. (For definitions, a click is a single staccato sound "kuh"; cranking would be the sound of the engine trying to start and just not able to make it "kuh-kuh-kuh-kuh-kuh-kuh"). I thought maybe I wasn't in park, so I jiggled the gear shift a little and then it started. I'm not sure I actually did anything, but it started and I figured it was a once and only problem. Well, I had the problem again tonight. In Park and Neutral I get a click. In Reverse and Drive, I get nothing. So it seems like Park is recognized. The battery is fully charged, but for god measure, I charged it anyway. Nothing unusual about the weather - 50s and dry. The car is parked on flat ground. I didn't just fill up. I can't think of anything different that I'm doing.
View 14 RepliesI am having problems with starting my 06 sonata. When I put the key in the ignition there is power, but when I turn the key the engine does not start. There is a faint click. This seems intermittent as most times the car starts normally. The battery shouldn't be the problem as I replaced it not long ago.
View 4 RepliesMy Sonata 2008 2.4 produces a single click as I press brake pedal, somewhere half way through. You can hear it and feel it with your foot. I think it clicks somewhere inside the hydraulic system of the brake.
View 13 RepliesI bought my 2011 sonata gls last year and it has always had a bit of an issue when shifting from 2nd to 3rd. The best way to describe it would be if someone where dumping the clutch and you get that sudden, hard acceleration with a bit of rev flare and then back down the lower revs. It doesn't do it every time it shifts, but enough that it is very annoying. I've had it in the dealership twice for this issue but I get the same "We can replicate the issue" song and dance. They tell me there is no code, and no history of any code. I had the trans position sensor replaced under warranty late last year.

View 10 RepliesI have been experiencing a slight issue with my 07 Sonata V6 lately. When I am accelerating, most commonly when already at speed around 80 to 90 km/h, I would hear this 2-3 ticks / clicks when I press lightly or moderately on the accelerator pedal. The car would accelerate fine without any further noises. When I release the pedal, the car slows down a bit, and I press on the pedal again, then the same sound re-appears.
View 2 RepliesMy mom has a 2016 Sonata that recently has started experiencing some issues with the gear shift. A few weeks back my stepdad was not able to get the gear shift to move out of park. Finally, my step brother did get it to go into drive, but then could not get back into park (he could only get into neutral), so my mom took it to have it looked at. While at the dealer someone there was able to get the gear shift to work and we thought everything was okay. That was until today when my stepdad could not get it out of park again. I noticed today that button on the shift knob was fully depressed while in park. I did attempt to use the shift lock release per the instructions in the manual with no luck.
My mom is going to call Hyundai in the morning to see what they can do for her, as the car is parked at minimart right now.
Lately when I turn on my car and shift the gear into reverse, the light that identifies which gear it is on doesn't come on. Just white light. When I try to reverse it wouldn't. When I try to shift to any gear it would jerk violently. Only thing I could do is put it back to park, shut down the car and restart the car back up. Then it acts normal again. Taking the car back to the dealership for recall but also mentioning this issue I am having.
View 2 RepliesI have a 2011 Sonata with 4,000 miles. Recently, I have noticed that when coming to a stop, I hear a light thump noise in the center console area near the gear shift lever. If I put my hand on the gear shifter, I can feel it move ever so slightly at the time of the noise. The noise is very repeatable. If I take my foot off the brake and start rolling and then I reapply the brake (either softly or hard) it will make the thump noise. It is not very loud and can be drowned out with loud music, but if listening to news, it is very noticeable and annoying in city traffic, where stops are very frequent. I put the car up on ramps and looked underneath and did not see anything noticeable. It will probably require the center console between the seats to be removed.
View 14 RepliesDon't recall exactly how long this has been going on, maybe a month. Between 20-45 mph, car sounds like it should shift. It finally does at 45 and all is well. But when I am in a 35 mph zone, the whining noise is scary. Is this serious?
View 44 RepliesAt the beginning it was just CEL on. I checked the code and change transmission range sensor but it worked for few days only. Light came back and transmission sometimes stop to shift automatically. D1 on display and driving only on first gear, but when I switch to tiptronic - manually everything works great?!
View 2 RepliesOk, So my car wont come out of park unless you do the manual override. I recently put a new battery in the car and accidentally put it on backwards. I was lucky enough not to burn the ECU as the car starts and still drives but the ABS and ESC lights are on along with the BRAKE light.
