Sonata NF (2006-10) :: Rear Deck Brake Light Keeps Burning Out
Mar 23, 2011
I have changed the brake light in the rear deck 3 times in the last 2 months. Why they keep burning out?

View 7 RepliesYesterday i noticed that the right rear brake light and high mounted brake light does not work when i press brake only the left one work, although the right tail light work well when parking light is turned on. Is it a matter of fuse or wiring cut.

View 4 RepliesI drive a Sport and have installed a subwoofer and amplifier to work with the stock head unit and speakers. However, I find the subwoofer sounds a bit muffled and I think I need to create a bit of an air flow between the trunk and the cockpit.
I did notice the rear deck has a big hole where the 8 inch subwoofer sits in higher trims. The hole is however, covered with a plastic dummy or cap or placeholder or whatever it is Hyundai calls it. If I can remove that, I can make some air flow and believe the subwoofer might sound better. How to remove it?
Have a cracking noise coming from the rear windshield/deck when going over bumps when the car is cold? I've had this consistently since I got the car. It also has been consistently cold so there have been no warm days for me to tell if this noise goes away when it's warm out or not. It is extremely annoying though and I can't really pinpoint what it is either.
View 2 RepliesI bought a 2006 Sonata V6 3.3L with 137k on it about a month ago. Engine and Trans is great, but I noticed an issue that developed within the past week and a half or so.
I am one to always engage the parking brake when parked, to relieve pressure on the parking paw in the transmission. After about a week of heavy use of the parking brake, I began to hear a slight 'clunk, clunk, clunk' coming from the rear passenger wheel (it actually sounded like something was loose in the trunk, but ruled it out). The 'clunk' sound at first only happened going over rough or bumpy roads, but within the past week or so it's gotten louder and more consistent. It now 'clunks' regardless of speed or road surface.
I used the parking break today for the first time while the car was in motion, and when pulled it sqreached very loud, didn't really stop the car, but the 'clunk' became very loud while the break was pulled - shockingly loud, actually.
A couple of days ago I took the rear passenger tire off while jacked up, and spun the wheel. With neither the parking or regular breaks engaged, the wheel made a 'clunk' sound very similar to that it makes on the road. Took of the Tire/Rim and spun the Rotor, to hear the same sound. Attempted to wiggle the Rotor and found no play at all.
At first, the clunk went away when you pressed the floor board brake pedal, even just a slight bit stopped the noise. Now it doesn't seem to stop it any longer.
My main idea is that the parking brake in the Rotor is the culprit, given that the issues didn't arise until I started using the parking brake - and the fact that brake appears to not work very well. However, my dad tells me he thinks it's a wheel bearing. I don't think it is - as its not making any metal on metal sounds, nor is it very difficult to rotate the Rotor while jacked up.
Ok today I just drove from my house to my parents to get an electrical panel and it drove fine. It is about 17 miles of 55mph country winding highway. I arrive there and I smell the all too familiar hot brakes smell. I get out and see a little smoke coming from the right rear brakes. I know it must be either a locking up caliper or a bad caliper bracket as these are the Akebono brakes. What are your recommendations for replacement parts?
I plan to replace the drivers side rotor as more than likely it is now warped. I plan to change pads on both sides and the drivers side rear caliper. Is there a special procedure for a vehicle with anti-lock brakes to properly bleed them? I have a caliper spreader will I screw up the accumulator for the ABS if I just spread the old caliper for removal?

I have an 06 sonata and have no brake lights and the constant ESC off light staying on. After reading countless threads on here I see that the brake light switch was recalled on these and this is extremely common problem with this year and model. I went to my local shop bought a brand new switch, installed it properly and still the lights won't come on. I changed the fuses as well. Emergency lights, and the tail lights when the headlights are on come on but no brake lights. My next guess is the bulbs? they look ok. But I had a dodge caravan where both bulbs went out before at the same time so is that a possibility with this?
View 3 RepliesESC Off & Brake Light keep appearing intermittently. When I turn the car off and then back on, they go off. This has happened about 5 or 6 times in the last week.
I want to take it to the dealer but I just know I'll get a, "cannot duplicate problem" from them because it doesn't happen all the time. I'm going on a trip in two weeks and I don't want to run into problems on the road.
After losing 4 bulbs trying to put the new light in from the bottom on my 07 Sonata's high brake light, I finally figured out, that if you take a dremel or other small cutting tool and cut of the tab on the bulb socket, the whole assembly will slide back into place from the top. Cut the tab even with the holes where the two wires go into the socket, and you should have no problems.
View 23 RepliesI was at a stop light. The light turned green and I let off the brake. Just then the car died while I was in drive. I couldn't put it in park. I was a little panicky. It broke down on a major road in morning traffic. I tried starting the car. Nothing. I think I managed to move the shifter into neutral and tried starting the car again. Not a problem this time. Maybe a few minutes had lapsed. It bothers me of course because I've only made 4 payments on it and I'm planning on a trip out of town this weekend. After I dropped my son off I made it home without incident. What caused this?
View 1 RepliesThis afternoon while I was driving home from work I heard a minor squeak so I put the windows up and the radio off. t I heard my brake pedals chirp. It's a small minor squeak, but I hear it and it's bothering me. Am I over thinking this?
View 20 RepliesOn my '06 Sonata GL the third center brake light does not work all the time. I say all the time because it has a mind of its own; it works when it wants to. I have changed the bulb and it was working perfectly fine for months and months until recently when it suddenly began to act up.
View 8 RepliesSo my May 2007 V6 Sonata with 143,000 km (89k miles) had the red parking brake light come on. Master cylinder level was low and there was evidence of something leaking on the driveway. Below the very back of the driver seat.
At the dealership they say I've got a leak in my brake lines. Say that the fuel lines should be replaced too since they are in the same compartment. So if one goes the other may not be far behind.
I was out of town and the car couldn't be driven safely so I was pretty much stuck there. When the dealership did the work a rusted bolt snapped near the fuel tank and they said that added an additional hour of labour to the work. In the end I wasn't charged for it. Tech said he had never seen a Sonata have the brake lines rust out like that. I got the brake and fuel lines done cause I plan on owning it for 6+ years.
I bought a 2012 Sonata limited a month ago and have no complaints so far. I have never owned a Hyundai before and just wanted to ask if a burning smell above rear wheels after driving a bit is normal , due to the fact that the car is still technically breaking in ? It has 850 km on it. I can not smell that rubber burning odour when I park outside though. But when I park in my garage and just walk around or try to get something from my trunk I do get the smell. It used to come form both rear wheels and now it seems to be coming from the right one only, just above exhaust system. I checked the rear rims and breaks for temperature and they do not seem to be any hotter than the front ones. I did get undercoat shield protection called Platinum Shield frome the dealer and from what I could see it does not look like that they put anything on the exhaust system itself.
View 24 RepliesI have a 2000 Outback, 80K, and I've been having brake issues. The first thing I noticed was a burning brake smell. I pulled over and found that my two front wheels were very hot. I pumped the brakes a few times and let them cool down and drove on. Pulled over in a bit to check them and they were fine. Took the car to the dealer who said, "We can't really find anything wrong with the fronts, but the backs are sticking a bit and we fixed that." So, off I went. Of course, it happened again. Left front seemed the hottest, but this time I noticed that the rear wheels were warm as well. Took it in again. Again, "We don't know." "Could it be the calipers or the lines or the ABS chip," I asked? "Well, yeah, maybe the front calipers." So they replaced the front calipers.
Picked it up and noticed two things of interest on the print out: "Rear brakes hanging up," and the front pads are a 8mm and the rear at 3mm! Hm... Seemed fishy to me. I had all the pads replaced a year and half ago. The last set lasted 75K, so this is odd, as is the discrepancy between back and front. I had the dealer pull the service record. In May the rear were at 5mm. Two weeks ago they were at 3.5mm. Yesterday they were a 3mm. I asked, "What would cause that?" They said, "Well, probably whoever did your brake job didn't clean the brakes up well so they are getting stuck and wearing down." I took the car and drove 60 miles, mostly on the highway. Fronts wheels were cool. Rear wheels were warm to hot.
I was told the Led went out and I would have to buy a complete assembly Part 8155147100. Is this correct? Is there anyway to just replace the led?
I looked at after mark replacements, but after reading some of the reviews, I think I should buy a genuine Toyota replacement.
I have a 2007 Sonata V6 with 198,000km (123,000 miles) and when I was driving yesterday I smelt a burning smell like burning rubber or plastic. The smell seemed to go away after a while and I was wondering what could have caused it?
View 2 RepliesBoth brake lights on my KIA Sportage 2006 function normally when the car lights (headlights etc) are switched off.
When the car's lights are switched on, the right brake light completely stops working, whilst the left one behaves normally and becomes brighter.
So I was sitting in my car, running, parked with the ac on and out of no where I got an electrical/burning smell coming from the vents. My volts were reading 12 with ac on at idle but once my rpms reach about 7-800 it goes back to 14. My question is what was that smell? I've had 2 alternators go on this car (power draining aftermarket accessories 3.3 v6) and have driven the car for about 2 hours collective time since the problem started (usually alternator goes quick) and haven't noticed any lights dimming, ac blows cold, system still plays full tilt. could a bad compressor be causing putting some stress on the car?
