Lately I have been hearing a rattling noise from the bottom of my car, when it's in park I can barely hear it but I know its there, but when i put it in drive or reverse it gets worse. Could it be that the exhaust heat shield is loose? Or worse? I had my Tranny fluid flused at 142,000 mi i'm at 144,000.
View 9 RepliesI have a high milage (210K) '07 2.4L which has a slight engine rattling noise at idle RPM at cold and operating temps, in gear or park. It is a fairly constant noise at idle but does vary a little. Otherwise, engine/tranny operate beautifully with no obvious problems.
I am concerned this could be a timing chain/tensioner related issue although I also wonder if it may be some other component. I have not been able to determine the source or location of the sound.
Over the last couple of days, my 2009 Sonata V6 has developed what I best can describe as a rattling noise near the engine when I am accelerating the vehicle (noise changes based on throttle input). I only hear the noise with the car in drive, if I shift into Neutral or when I am in Park I don't hear the noise when I rev the engine.
View 6 RepliesMy car just hit 111k miles last week! I have the 2006 sonata V6 LX, new spark plugs n new cats at 65k. So today I got to school for my final and realized the car was making a weird noise.
The noise is barely there on low revs, but when I rev a tiny bit it becomes very noticeable, and gets rattles faster to a certain point, but i think after like 2.5-3k revs kinda goes away(kinda because I don't know if its because i cannot hear it over the engine noise) and then when i let off it rattles on the rev down and then gets silent for a split sec and then back the low rev rattle.
What i understand it could be belts, pully's, the timing belt tensioner?
I have the 2006 v6, and so i think the seal for the front of the engine has issues for the year, so there is an maybe very slow oil seeping thru, it had stained the front left of the engine above the alternator, but has been like this since 50k miles when i first noticed it and no problems
And also i have 2 12" 1000w rms subs in the trunk, so could it be the alternator that can make that kind of noise?
I have a 07 Hyundai sonata that has a rattling noise only during acceleration and only at just under 2000 rpm's. I went to a mechanic who checked the heat shields and exhaust only to tell me it was in the transaxel and sent me to a transmission shop. the transmission shop told me they think its the hydraulic lifters, and sent me elsewhere.
View 1 RepliesRecently my engine started making a rattling noise. It does not matter if the engine is warm or cold. In either condition it produces the same noise. The noise can be best heard at the back of the engine. My car is a Sonata 2.4 GLS from 2006 and has roughly 110000km on the odometer.

Recently when I first start my car in the morning, there is a rattling noise, which sounds like it's coming from the driver's side of the engine bay, or possibly just under the drivers side door. It only lasts for a couple of minutes. It will increase I accelerate, and then decrease as soon as I lift off the gas. After a couple minutes, the rattling goes away, and everything is right in the world. Today I drove it around the block and parked while it was still rattling away. When I put it in park the rattling went away. I put it back in drive and it came back. Then as usual it finally went away whether in drive or park. I'm completely stumped on this one. It's an '08 2.4l GLS and has 138,000 miles.
View 9 RepliesSo, I changed my spark plugs a couple of months ago and did the pcv valve swap as well. Now I have this high pitched rattling noise, like a tiny chain rattling. It is coming from the engine bay - in the area between the throttle body and the firewall. At least that's where I can hear it.
It does it quickly right after I start the engine (though I am certain it is not a timing chain issue)...I had that fixed a while back. Also it doesn't sound like the timing chain tensioner noise.
I am thinking maybe the pcv valve that I swapped out. I remember reading that a new one should make some noise when you shake it...an old, gunked one would not rattle if you shook it in your hands. Consequently, this noise sounds a lot like if I would shake the pvc valve back and forth very fast.
It happens intermittently on idle....and when I rev the engine, it will also make the noise while the RPM falls back down. Since this happened literally right after I did the spark plug change and the pcv valve, my guess is it's that. Maybe I didn't install it correctly.
101,400 miles on car. Started noticing about 2 weeks ago, at idle, and as pickup up speed, a whining noise coming from the engine bay. It has gotten a little worse, so I started trouble shooting.
Basically, at idle, its somewhat annoying, but as you hit 20-30mph it can be more annoying if the radio is off or at low level. If Im sitting there in park, and its whining away, all it takes is me cutting the A/C knob to OFF, and then quiet as a mouse.
So, other than the compressor going bad, I can't see anything else related? I always hate when AC problems show up, they are never cheap....
I have a 2008 Hyundai Sonata GLS 2.4L with 131,000 miles on it. When I accelerate from a stop, there is a buzzing/rattling/grinding noise coming from the engine bay of my car. It's really hard to describe, there is a definite buzzing sound, but also almost like there is a bolt rattling around and banging into things. This only happens for a couple of seconds. It also seems to be worse when I'm accelerating up hill. If I accelerate slowly from a stop, the noise does not occur, and it also does not occur if I accelerate while I'm already moving.
View 4 RepliesI have noticed lately, when the car is hot, while pulling into my quiet garage, and even when the car is in park, engine running --- hearing some clicking / ticking coming from, or near the Catalytic Converter.... It sounds as if a small piece of metal is rattling inside with the flow of air... It stops clicking once the engine is turned off.
View 5 RepliesThe car has a rattling sound on start up and I read here that is the timing chain tensioner. The quotes for fixing it has been huge(from 900-2000 just for labor).
And I changed front struts and had Monroe put on the car, the ride is very soft and a bit bouncy. I had a 2004 Altima and the ride was very stiff and I loved it. By the way, the car is a 2006 V6 with 111000miles.
I have a 2004 3.5 V6 that is making a rattling noise when the car is in idle and/or about 1rpm. Sometimes, for awhile now , it kind of screams when I first start it...but not all the time. I know this is a loaded question but what do you think it might be? The screaming noises don't happen all the time, like I said, and very rarely happen together but the rattling is happening a lot!
View 1 RepliesI have a 2005 Honda CR-V with about 97,000 miles on it. I recently noticed that there's a rattling sound when the car is idle but it disappear when driving. The noise can only heard outside. It is also intermittent. I just had the idler pulley/Belt Tensioner replaced a couple of days ago as a friend thought that was the issue. Car seems run normal, I don't notice any change in performance and no check engine or what so ever. I have a long drive coming up in a couple of weeks and I have no clue what could be going on.
View 4 Repliesi have an 07 jeep compass (only 52k miles). it was making a loud rattling noise (i liken the sound to the noise a penny or pebble makes when its sucked up a vacuum). I pulled off for gas last night and it just wouldn't turn back on. AAA was able to jump the battery and i was able to drive home. Now its dead again. i previously had an issue where the car was stalling when idle (only if it was in drive). I'm thinking the rattling, battery draining and stalling must all be connected.

I have a 2011 Sonata SE 2.4 In the last week Ive noticed a noise what sounds like my valves are rattling or maybe even a bad lifter. This only happens when I bring the RPM's up to 2500-3000. Not at idol or normal driving when RPM's are around 2000 or lower. Its getting progressively louder every couple of days. I've ruled out bad gas (I used another station in another city on last fill up ). My oil is changed every 3000-4000 miles with the recommended oil as well.

I understand this is the interlock feature, however, I do not recall feeling this before. I also thought it only activated while in park, but I could be wrong. Is this normal?
I also am noticing a loud rattling noise coming from the engine bay, behind the speedo, under certain conditions. If I use light throttle, the 1-2 shift produces a loud rattling near 1900rpm.
Tonight while driving I heard a rattling noise under the engine, come to a stop and the engine cuts off. I pop the hood, get a jump and nothing. So I check the oil and it is dry... I changed it 4 months ago myself, it is a mystery how it leaked. No light came on, no oil leaks anywhere..
Is there any hope in having the engine turn over again? If so how should I go about trying to turn it? Engine only has 61000 miles on it.
I purchased a used 2010 Toyota Corolla LE with about 40k miles back in February of this year. Since then, the car has been issue-free and has responded accordingly.
Two weeks ago I noticed that the car when idle or at a stop light it'd make a subtle rattling noise (as if it was something behind the glove compartments rattling against metal). At 1st I thought maybe it was something inside, but as that week turned to days, I noticed that while I was outside the car and it was on and idle, I could hear the rattling from the right side of the car under the passenger seat (closer to the engine, as if right below where the glove compartment sat)--It is a constant rattle at the same frequency..meaning it doesn't rattle one way 1st and then another later. It sounds the same, but it is random.
It evolved from a subtle rattle inside to being a loud rattle outside under the car. I noticed that if it was rattling and I turned off the air, the rattling would stop, but after 20 seconds, the rattling would return just not as frequent.
It was advised to me that perhaps it was the blower...but the blower sits behind the glove compartment and should not sound so loud under the car. Not only that, but if the blower isn't on (when I turn off the air) it shouldn't sound...at least that's my logic for it.
The sound is getting louder and more frequent at this time and I'm just not sure what to do about this. I live in Miami, FL and hearing so many rip offs at mechanics, I don't know what this rattling is and I've already crawled under the car and see nothing wrong, nothing shaking violently, nothing.
I own a 91 Mercedes, model 190E which is just perfect for a retired single woman. As you probably already assume this car has 141,000 miles with an automatic transmission and I have had it in the various mechanic shops in my small town. I tried to remain with one mechanic or another, for continuity sake, but always find there is something haywire with the repairs done to it.
After one of the repairs jobs which included the replacement of the torques converter, rear main and transmission seals to include the O-rings, the car wouldn't shift from first gear. They kept it for 5 weeks during this repair. I had to rent a car for transportation during this period. I took the car back and they kept it for another three weeks.
When the car was returned to me it had a shuddering noise when in drive at idle. If I shift to neutral gear the noise and shuddering stops. I didn't take it back after that I was so discouraged about the change in the operation of my vehicle. I depend on these mechanics and just feel they are taking advantage. I have taken the car to several mechanics and cannot find anyone that can identify the problem. So, what is causing it the rock and roll of this car.
