I'm driving a 2006 4cyl LX Sonata. Just started past 3 months. Intermittently and usually after long freeway driving, the pwr steering locks-up as I come to a stop. Example is driving off the freeway via a ramp and stopping . Steering breaks loose if I apply pressure and goes back to normal. Fluid has been checked for level but not replaced.
View 3 RepliesAs I am driving the steering wheel will randomly lock for about 2 seconds. It has happened while changing lanes on the highway, also happening while making turns in intersections. Took it in to the dealer, all they did was clear the code and give it back to me. I have notified Hyundai Customer Care and they are supposed to contact me but right now the car is unsafe to drive.
View 50 RepliesMy wife drives our 2007 Sonata Limited every day. Over the past year, she has complained to me a few times that the steering locks up on her when she is exiting the freeway. The wheel is just stuck after a few seconds she can turn it and make the exit. I have driven it many many times and have never experienced it. It had new rotors & tires put on and after that, it seemed to stop. That was 6 months ago.
well tonight she said it happened again when she got off the freeway but this time it was at the stop light when she went to turn. Said it was stuck and again after trying to force it to turn it finally turned. I am concerned about her driving it since it is dangerous but since it only odes it out of the blue it's very hard to diagnose. I am thinking it may be that steering sensor that controls the fluid pressure but I don't just want to start changing things since I will not know if that is the problem due to a number of times the problem has occurred.
I've got about 80K miles on my '06 Sonata and the weather conditions were on the very wet side.
At first I thought I heard a squealing sound which I just credited to either a radio or windshield wiper sound while cruising through some twisty coastal roads. The rain was coming down pretty good and a small amount of standing water of already on the road.
As I continued my drive I began to notice an occasional loss of power steering for a split second through some turns accompanied by that same belt squealing sound. At the same time the battery light also came on for a split second which indicated to me possible engine failure for a split second. Even though it was for only a split second it really freaked me out to think I could end up crossing the center lane or over into the ditch. I then slowed my pace for the rest of the trip. When I stopped for gas I popped the hood and things appeared to be normal and with plenty of power steering fluid.
I'm having a serious problem with my 2-year old 09 Sonata....
It happened for the third time: after driving for a couple minutes, numerous dashboard signals flared up and my power steering suddenly seemed to turn off - all in the middle of driving. The first two times I took the car in, they found problems. One of the malfunctioning components was the timing belt, and they replaced it for us. After the third time, however, they couldn't find any problems and my car was deemed "perfectly normal." They didn't do anything for us.
Now, I'm left with a 'normal car' that I know will show the same problem sooner or later.. maybe in a more dangerous situation than the previous 3.
As I am driving my car, the locks will randomly engage and lock all of the doors. There is no way I can repeat the issue manually. Some days it won't do it at all, other days, for instance this morning, it locked them over and over again about 4 times. This morning it locked, so I unlocked them, then it locked again and again every time I unlocked them, until I simply left them locked. There isn't a specific speed that it does it at, and it isn't related to the dealer setting up the computer to lock once I hit a certain speed because it does it at all speeds regardless, and it also does it at complete random times.
View 8 RepliesA little over 18 months ago I noticed that my steering wheel seems to catch when I am making a slight turn such as on and off a freeway. It doesn't have the same issue when I am making hard right/left turns. I didn't worry about it until one day, two of my children in the car, the power steering failed completely as I was going over 50 mph on the off ramp to the freeway. I was able to control the car and avoid an accident and drove the car about 1 mile to the grocery store, which was my original destination.I went inside for about an hour and when I came out the car was fine. It has only had one other similar failure in 18 months but I commonly feel the catch of the steering wheel when I am exiting the freeway. What I mean by a catch is that it feels as though I would have to jerk the steering wheel to be able to turn more sharply because it has turned as far as it is able to go. I have taken it to 2 Mechanics including the dealership and neither can recreate my problem.
View 5 RepliesI now have 2 doors (driver and left rear doors) that have sluggish power door locks. They sometimes work, but always have energy when operated.
I'm thinking that maybe it's a connector with resistance and causing a voltage drop since it's on both doors on the same side of the car.
Been really busy lately and havent worked on car. Any way it's been about two months after lowering on hpa shs coils. Rides great but I have had the two following observations.
1. When I'm on the freeway at above 65 a big increase in vibration mostly in the steering wheel. I also rotated tires front to back as they are directional at the same time.
2. When I first set off there is a clunking/adjusting sound from the front right side. It seems to be connected with the rotation of the tire. Goes away as I drive down the block.
Recently bought a used '02 Porsche Boxster and find that there is vibration in the steering wheel when driving between 75 - 80 on the freeway. I see in 2008 the exact same problem was experienced by Goatster, a fellow owner of an '02 Boxster.
View 7 RepliesI have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. While driving the other day the steering wheel totally locked up. It was not like just losing power steering; you could not turn the wheel at all. I had the same thing happen 3 years ago and knew that if I turned off the car and restarted it the steering would unlock. I did that, it unlocked, and I continued on my way. A few blocks later, the wheel locked up again and this time the engine died after the wheel locked up. A few blocks more and it locked up a third time, the engine died, and I could not get the vehicle to restart for several minutes. The engine would turn over but it would not start. After finally getting it to start I pulled into a parking spot and called a tow truck. The mechanics have had it for several days and can not find anything wrong. It will not repeat this behavior and no codes come up on the computer. When this happened 3 years ago the same thing happened. The mechanics had it for several days and could never find anything wrong. I've been lucky so far in that this has only happened at low speeds and at places where there was not a high volume of traffic.
View 4 RepliesI have had my 06 Sonata for about 3 years now. It has about 52,000 miles on it and it seems like over the past couple months the power steering has gotten louder. I checked the fluid and it is fine. My brother had a ford taurus that always had loud power steering but never presented any problems. Mine has never presented any problems either, it just seems like it has gotten louder. my question is, should I be concerned that it may lead to trouble in the future?

I have a 1998 Buick Regal where the steering wheel randomly locks up while I am driving it. I usually stop the car and start it back up with success. The last time this happened was after I had the supercharge engine replaced. Once it locked up it I tried to start it up. The first time it did not restart, but the second attempt worked. I have taken it two really good mechanics and neither were able to diagnose the problem. I cannot remember if I am running the air conditioner when it happens. I know that sometimes I am. What could be causing my car to randomly lock up like this?

View 12 RepliesI've got a 2006 Sonata LX, that has been leaking PS fluid for a while, but has gotten quite a bit worse lately. I finally put it up on ramps, and crawled underneath, and from what I can see, I think it's leaking from the pressure hose someplace.
The hose is covered with some type of a silver wrap. I wiped everything down as much as I could with a rag, waited for an hour, then crawled back underneath. There was some new fluid on the hose wrapping right above where it goes into the steering gear box (the driver-side leg of the hose).
Does this sound like it could be the hose? Would it be ok to remove the protective wrap to make sure? it's only wire-tied on to secure it, so I don't see why not.
I recently replaced the harmonic balancer on my 06 sonata v6.... the rubber was separating from the pulley. About 2 days later, i notice the power steering pump whining, so i checked the fluid and it was at the correct level. I have 98k miles, is it safe to assume i just need to change the power steering pump, is it possible anything else could be causing this problem? I doubt it is related to the crank pulley change, probably more a coincidence but wanted some opinions. Also, if it is the power steering pump.
View 29 RepliesI've got a 2010 base with the 4 cylinder. When you make a turn (mostly right, but sometimes left) through puddles the power steering and alternator temporarily go out. I believe it is a belt/power failure as a result of the water being splashed into the area - none-the-less, it's a potentially very dangerous situation.
I did a quick check and it looks like all the plastic is there and in good shape. I do realize there is an engine splash guard on this model and it is in place.
A footnote - the car did take a light hit in the front before I bought it. It was "patched" together and sold. They didn't do a terrible job (as it looks ok), but you can tell "things" aren't perfect.
Since the splash guard is in place - What should I be looking for?
For a few months, I've noticed a problem with my power steering...that now seems to be getting worse. When driving at 70mph on the highway, I would notice sometimes as I ightsto slow down to exit the highway that my power steering would be gone. I'd get down the exit ramp, hit my first stop light, and usually the power steering would be back on. This would happen intermittently.
It's been happening more often, and I have now found that it doesn't only happen on the highway; yesterday this happened twice at probably 50mph and it took a few blocks for it to reengage. What the cause of this might be?
I have a 2001 ford f150 lariat 5.4 L Trition it shuts off while driving the steering wheel locks up when the truck shuts off I tried everything and it doesn't seem to help the problem. I changed the Iacv idle air control valve,I had a bad o2 sensor changed that, changed the crank sensor, cleaned the throttle body and changed the Tps sensor, got a new battery, changed the vacuum lines.i really don't know what else to do this truck is becoming a nightmare and is dangerous to drive I never know when it's going to shut off and when it does shut off sometimes it starts right up and other times it doesn't.
View 2 RepliesI have a 2008 Hyundai Sonata GLS. Recently there has been a squealing noise coming from the pulley on the power steering pump. I would start when the car was cold but then go away when the engine warmed up. Lately it is squealing continuously. It does not get more intense when I turn, it just seems to be there constantly now. If this is the pump or just an idler pulley?
