2006 Sonata LX. It's only on a cold start up and lasts for about 30-45 seconds tops..and then it goes away. Car has 74k on it. Treated well. Only use synthetic oil and no check engine lights. Last oil change I put 5w 30 in it. I know it says to use 5w 20. Could this be the problem?
View 17 RepliesTwo months ago I bought a used 2006 Sonata v6 with 54,000 miles. After a few hundred miles I began to hear a rattle on cold start that lasts approx 5 secs. I did my research and saw the TSB concerning the timing chain tensioners. The TSB instructs the dealer to turn the engine off after reaching operating temp then restart after 10 minutes. If there was no noise after the ten minute start then the car is operating normally. My car does not rattle after the 10 minute start up. I just can't see this as a normal characteristic. What could be causing this noise?

Also when i start driving( still on cold engine) i hear that sound only when i let go from gas pedal and only in range of 1800-1500 rpm. When i accelerate i don't hear that knocking sound.
I think is not belt tensioner because sound is much longer than couple of sec.
I recently changed my ATF. I refilled with Hyundai SP-III like a good little boy. The ATF fluid level is correct. It's right in the "Hot" range when the car is idling at operating temp.
Now, when I back out of my driveway when the vehicle is totally cold, then put in Drive, I hear a slight knocking sound after I get about 50 feet away. It's a single knock, not very loud, but discernible. If I drive even 1/2 mile and try again (i.e. back up a bit, then put it back in Drive), I can't reproduce it. It's only when the car is first backed out and driven away.
I have around 15K left on the warranty. I'd feel silly bringing it to the dealer for this, unless someone knew of an issue this might be a symptom of.
The engine starts with knocking, rattling, and vibration that lasts for about 5 seconds. It seems to be an intermittent, rare event. With nearly 250,000 Prius in the North American market and the onset of cooler weather, it is time to see how frequently this occurs.
View 19 RepliesRecently, our 2009 Sonata jumps to relatively high and not normal RPM when start cold (and I don't mean winter-cold; I mean first start in the morning). It jumps to around 2500 rpm for 3-4 seconds before it goes down to the normal 1200-1300 or so for a cold start.
Also, not sure if this is the normal Sonata engine sound, but when we push the accelerator it sounds like the engine is knocking, almost like a whistle of fuel flowing.
Every once in a while, I hear a sound coming from under my car, possibly the passenger side, that sounds like I am pulling a tin can around. It only lasts about 3 seconds. Sometimes I'll hear it when sitting at a red light, or accelerating from a complete stop. Then the sound disappears. This doesn't happen all the time, but I do feel like I'm hearing it more often as time is going on.
I did a little research online, and some say it could be a rock under my heat panel, but that seems too easy. I don't have any issues with shifting gears or accelerating.

I used the a/c for the first time this year on my 2013 F250 and heard some noises I don't remember hearing before. When the a/c(or defrost) is on every 12 sec or so I hear a hissing sound that lasts for a couple of seconds then goes away. Is this the compressor cycling and if so is it normal to hear it inside the cab?
I know it has to do with the a/c because if I shut it off as the hissing sound is being made the sound will instantly stop. Other than the noise the a/c works fine and blows cold air. Also, if it matters I have the standard control panel, not climate control.
So I installed my intake....again this weekend and have been monitoring it to make sure it doesn't pop off again. When you first start up, there is a very loud growl coming from the intake that lasts about 20 seconds. I also noticed that the breather filter kicks in during this time as well. Is this normal? I would yes but want to understand exactly why...
View 12 RepliesFrom time to time I get this high vibration on start-up of the car. It almost seems like more of the engine noise and vibration is coming through to the cabin. It only lasts about 5 seconds from initial start up and the rpm does not change and stays constant. This only happens maybe once every other week or once a month. What or why this could be happening?
View 6 RepliesI have a 97 7.3 ... I've had it about 2 months now and now it wont start! It will start and idle for 2 seconds then start knocking and die! I had a buzz test ran on it and all is good. I also checked my Icp and checked my uvch harness with my multimeter. Before this it would run ok but seemed like it had a miss and a lack of power. On start up if i didn't have it plugged in it would smoke white smoke horribly. I am thinking maybe my IDM. I need my truck for work .... I had it hooked up to a scanner and it said faulty IDM.
View 1 RepliesMy 2009 Sonata 2.4l Sonata has been making a loud knocking noise when it is cold, but it will fade to almost nothing after it warms up. I tried to make a sound clip of the noise, but it was so distorted that I could not even make out the noise on the video.
For some strange reason the noise matches the skipping problem I have been complaining about since the beginning. Yea it's still there. It sounds like it is in the valve system, not the lower end. It leads me to believe it's coming from the valve clearance/ camshaft area.
I started having an issue when the weather changed here on the East this weekend. When I start my car in the morning the engine knocks for about 30 seconds and then stops. I also recently got an oil change at some local mechanic shop and wondered if that might be the issue. I checked the oil and it was stellar this morning but I'm not sure what kind they put in there. I would assume it's the required type.

View 6 RepliesI have a 2009 Sonata Limited (4 cyl), and since the beginning of the summer, I have had a knocking/creaking type sound coming from both the front AND back of the car, which feels like is coming from underneath. I can feel it in the floor when it gets really hot, and therefore really bad. I hear it almost exclusively while accelerating or coming to a complete stop. When it gets really hot out, I can hear it very slightly while driving at slower speeds, but that's about it. Has no correlation to making turns, as would be the case with a tie rod.
I find it extremely strange that this is happening only in the heat. When it's cooler out, say below 80-85 degrees, there is no sound whatsoever. The car runs phenomenally otherwise, very quiet. Based on some stuff I've read, it seems like a suspension issue is a possibility? I live in a neighborhood with extremely poor roads, and actually live on a dirt road.
I have a 2007 sonata 2.4L with 93k miles that has a knocking sounds coming from the bottom of the engine. It seems that it is a bad rod bearing and was caused by low oil levels. I did not know that the oil was that low (3 quarts low) It started about a week ago. I know I'm gonna have to put it on jack stands and drop the oil pan.

I own a 07 Hyundai Sonata Limited with 31000 miles. It is 20 degrees today. When I start the car up there is this knocking sound from the engine. Once the car warms up the knocking sound only happens when the car is in drive or reverse. When the car is in park or neutral it is fairly quiet. The sounds is still there but not as loud as in drive or reverse. I have done the routine synthetic blend oil changes between 3500-4500 miles.
View 14 RepliesSince I had my 40k service a few months back, I hear a knocking sound for about 3-5 seconds after a cold start (overnight is long enough). It's a pretty loud clicking sound, even worse if the car hasn't been started for a few days.
I brought it to the dealership and they said it's "the sound of the lifters clicking before they get pressurized with oil". They said the oil level is fine. Doesn't seem kosher to me - didn't happen before the 40k service.
Could they have used the wrong oil? Or perhaps didn't put something back together again properly?
My 2007 Hyundai Sonata has a knocking sound when I put my foot on the brakes. It has 82,000 miles. It still has the 100,000 mile warranty. The brake shoes was replaced last year. Does it need new shocks?
View 2 RepliesI was driving this morning after doing a brake job (nothing to do with the problem, just anger coming out) made it about 10 kms and noticed when i took my foot off the accelerator, the heater fan powered down a bit, and back up when I gave it gas...noticed a knocking sound from the engine...pulled into a gas station and put it in park. After a hard time idling, it cut out. I started it again and the idle was not good at all. kept cutting out. Got it going and made it home with the same sort of power issue. Tried to start it a couple times and same issue with the idle. Sputtering quite a bit and noticed quite a bit of exhaust coming out. When I backed it out of the garage, I noticed a small puddle of oil.
View 15 RepliesI have an '05 FX4 with 5.4 and 55,000 miles. I've noticed that once in awhile when starting the truck after it has sat for at least a day I get a type of growling noise that lasts for a second or two. It usually happens shortly after the engine starts up and gets running, but it has also happened after it has run for a minute or two and then makes the noise when I give it some gas to take off. From inside the cab the sound seems like it is coming from the driverside firewall area, but on the rare occasion that I'm able to start the truck and jump out before it makes the sound it sounds like it is coming from underneath the center of the truck. It doesn't make the sound every time on a cold start and never makes it on subsequent starts. I drive truck during the week only drive my Ford on weekends and sometimes it goes longer without being started, but I don't know if this has anything to do with it.
I thought it was a shield vibrating or something but have also heard that the VCT parts can make a rattling sound on a cold start also and this has me a little worried. This sound seems more like a fast growl than a rattle, but it happens so fast it's over before I can really register what it is. One time it made the sound twice, once after startup and again after it had idled a minute or two, thats when it seemed like it came from under the center of the truck. The engine has had a slight cam phaser knock since new, but it is so quiet that it can only be heard if you're inside a building or next to a wall and roll the window down.
Also, I change the oil every 2500-3000miles and only use Motorcraft 5w20 and a 820S filter, and generally baby the truck. What this could be. The truck runs great all the time, I just get this noise occasionally after cold start.
