At some point in time I noticed that when I turn on the rear defroster a hiss develops in my (factory-installed) radio, operating on the FM band. Most of the time this hiss is strong enough to mask the audio entirely. I noticed, too, that one or possibly two "printed wires" in the rear window may no longer be operating; however, I don't know whether this is connected to the hiss problem.

As soon as I turn off the defroster, the reception comes back to normal. This is on a '09 Sonata limited - this did not happen on my previous '08 Azera and '06 Sonata LX...

So for a while now I have noticed that I often have a great deal of static on my radio during my ride to work. I was stumped because it only happened occasionally and affected every channel, AM and FM. Today I discovered what was changing to cause the static. Whenever I have the rear window defroster on, there is static on the radio. Turning the rear defroster off, stops the static immediately. I have checked all other electric devices in conjunction with the radio, and it is only caused by the defroster. My understanding is that the antenna is built into the rear window, so the cause and effect seems obvious.
As I understand the radio is on the rear window of the car and every time i listen to the radio and turn on the rear defroster I get static and I can barely hear the radio. Is it possible to buy a different antenna and mount it somewhere else instead of using the one on the window?
View 5 RepliesWhile driving, I occasionally hear a hiss, which seems to be a/c related. but just recently, I've heard an extremely high-pitched squeal/whistle. So high-pitched I had to slow down, turn off the music, and tell my wife to stop talking :P to hear it. Brakes are not being pressed. Definitely not a brake problem. How do I know? I parked the car, with engine running, opened the hood, and looked for the sound. nothing. I turned off the car and was walking inside when i heard it whistling behind me, mockingly. it stopped shortly after.
I'm thinking it might be a/c related, or some kind of pressure hose. (a/c is working fine otherwise, as far as i know). It's not air leaking from the tire. I've heard it on and off for about a week and the tire pressure is fine.
I'm more mechanical with computers than cars, but i have a basic understanding. it seems to be coming from the driver side, under the dash/under the hood.
So I have the dreaded "rear defroster/radio static interference" issue on my 2011 Corolla LE. I turn on my radio and all is good. I turn on my rear window defroster and my FM reception goes away.I am pretty sure I did it to myself because it only started happening after I cleaned the rear window with some windshield washing fluid and a paper towel. I do have a knack for being a bit gruff on things and people unintentionally so I guess I am not surprised. I must have damaged the elements of the rear defroster in the process of cleaning the window. I should have left it dirty.
Anyway, I've read many posts detailing how breaks in the rear defroster grid can introduce EMI that effects the factory radio antennae in the rear window. Some of the answers I have seen suggested are:
1) replace the rear window (really?)
2) use a repair kit. URL...
3) completely replace the the rear defroster grid with an after market kit. URL...
4) replace the factory antennae with an after market unit that is not internally mounted
5) live with it
Are there any other options that I haven't found? If the root cause is the rear defroster, the repair kit seems like the way to go (even if it looks like an annoying task to perform upside down in such tight and cramped spaces). Might fix the defroster if its broken but will it resolve the EMI problem ...
I have a 2007 Honda Civic 2 dr. A couple years ago the manufacturer cell phone charger was blown in a few days of use with the cigarette lighter. The manufacturer replacement was next blown, and then a cheap off-brand was blown. Last fall, turning on the rear defroster began causing static interference on the FM stations. Several months later, I noticed that use of the cigarette lighter as a cell phone charger also caused radio static.
Next week, the rear windshield will be removed and replaced during a body repair. Should I ask for a replacement windshield, or just for attention to the connection with the electric? What else can be done about either of these causes of FM static?
I have a 2012 Hyundai Sonata Limited. The rear defroster light on the dash does not light up. The rear window defroster DOES work, but the light does not light up. I took it to the Hyundai dealer and they ordered and replaced some module. They saw the light still did not light up. The service manager said she called other dealers and discovered that none of the 2012 Sonata rear defroster lights lit up, so concluded it was supposed to be that way.
View 4 RepliesNow that the weather has gotten very cold, I used the rear windshield defroster a couple of times this week. The smell that it emits is absolutely disgusting, I had to turn it off. The front defroster isn't much better. What could be causing it? Also the rear defroster, when working, defrosts the window in a "V" shape, meaning the center is clear but the sides and top/bottom are still frosted. I have a 2014 GLS.

View 4 RepliesMy 2009 Sonata Limited always has the front window defroster come on in cooler temps when the climate control is set to AUTO. This is aggravating since it shouldn't do that. I took it in for service last year at this time and they didn't find anything wrong and I gave up arguing with the dealer about it.
Is there a sensor or something that is out of adjustment? It comes one when the temp is about 40F or lower and you just start the car after it's been sitting cold. I don't notice it so much when I am out on multiple errands.
Another thing that I notice is that I can never just turn the fans on for air circulation when the temps are moderate, not needing A/C or heat. If it turn the fan on, it always seems to blow cold air feeling like the A/C is on, even if it is not in AUTO mode. I complained about the same thing and the dealer said the unit is operating OK.
I recently bought a 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe from a rental company. So far the only problem is that the radio and front defroster sometimes turn themselves on. Just today we were driving and the radio came on. Then later when accelerating it seemed sluggish, and I noticed the front defroster was on. I turned it off, and a few minutes later it came on again. It happened about 5 times while on the same 5 mile trip. Will be taking it to the local dealer/service center after holiday weekend.
View 1 RepliesDaughter's 09 Accent 86k miles making a very quick hiss when accelerating rapidly and/or uphill about a half second before first shift. Hiss stops noticeably before the shift happens. She reports a slight 'kickback' in the pedal, but I noticed no power loss when the passenger seat. No check engine light. Car has an aftermarket cruise. Sound seems to be coming from the right-ish side of the vehicle and outside the cabin. Doesn't occur under 'grandpa' driving conditions. Pretty much only when using the accelerator as a binary switch.

View 1 RepliesI've notice it do this probably 4 or 5 times in the last couple days. I turn my brights on and the radio will turn off for a second and turn back on by itself. Its not just the display going blank because the sound goes off also.
I trying to figure out all electrical I have going when this happens. Rear Defrost etc.
I think it went out once without turning the brights on but I can't remember what I was doing that time. Have less than 4k on my warranty.
I have a 2009 3.3L Limited with the Nav system. Sometimes when I start the car the radio/nav display is locked up and will only display the Hyundai logo. During this lock-up, the radio still works. Using the steering wheel selectors I can switch beween station presents, between radio bands, and can change XM radio stations as well. The USB flash drive will not play any music during the lock-up. If I turn the car off then turn it on again, the problem goes away. This lock-up typically happens once every few weeks.
View 3 RepliesI'm facing a bit of a problem on my girlfriends dads 2009 Sonata (Non-Premium sound system). I just installed a Pioneer aftermarket head unit and am getting no sound when the car is started or when its in ACC mode. However, when the ignition is just turned to the "ON" position (first click) the head unit works flawlessly and all 4 speakers output sound. As soon as I turn it to ACC or start the car, there is no sound at all but the head unit still powers up and shows the track playing. I'm really stumped here guys. I've done literally countless head unit installations and I just can't figure this one out, nor have I ever seen this before. I thought the problem might have been a factory amp, but the head unit does not say JBL or Infinity so that leads me to believe it doesn't have a factory amp. Maybe I'm not the pro I though I was lol.
At any rate, just in-case it matters, there is a line out converter attached to the system in order to add a sub/amp to the stock head unit that I installed a few years prior to attempting the aftermarket head unit installation. I don't think that would matter but I may be wrong. I was planning to remove it and route the RCA's to the aftermarket head unit once everything was up and running.
I have a 2009 Sonata. The radio preset buttons stopped working. Any quick fixes to this problem???

View 7 RepliesAll the things radio, CD player and lights on the radio is dead. Cannot find a fuse for the radio. Hyundai Dealer says to bring it in next Tuesday. Says it may have a dead head what ever that means.
