This is a 2006 Hyundai Sonata w/ 3.3 engine. 62,000 mi. The air bag warning light on dash comes on and goes off intermittently.
What causes this? What can I check? Is there really a problem?
I am the original owner of a 2007 LS460 with under 36K miles. Recently, my SRS (Airbag) warning light came on, but after I restarted the car it went off. However, shortly thereafter it came back on again, but it went off after I restarted the car. The last time it came on it stayed on. So I brought it into the dealer 2 weeks ago to diagnose it. They provided me with a service loaner ES350 and I'm still waiting for their decision as to what, if anything, they will do.
I discovered that on January 13, 2010, Lexus issued Service Bulletin Number 282827 in response to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) Action Number 10033557. Here is the Summary: "Lexus supplemental restraint systems. Some model vehicles may exhibit an srs light on condition with dtc b1861 and/or b 1866. After confirming the vehicle condition matches the bulletin, it will direct you to replace the instrument panel."
It appears that my LS460 matches that bulletin. Note that this is a Service Bulletin and NOT a recall, notwithstanding the fact that it pertains to a safety system, namely, SRS - the supplemental restraint system (airbags). My Service Adviser told me that because Lexus has not received enough complaints this matter has not been escalated to the level of a recall. He did not tell me how many complaints were received.
Because my car is out of warranty, my Service Adviser requested a courtesy repair from Lexus for the following reasons: (1) I purchased 2 brand new vehicles from this dealer (LS460 and RX350); (2) both vehicles have been serviced by the book; and (3) my LS460 has under 36K miles.
I would like to know if any other LS460 owners have experienced a similar intermittent airbag warning light and, if so, how that was resolved.
A year ago I replaced radiator, long job in the winter in an unheated garage. After radiator was successfully replaced Air bag warning light started to come on intermittently. More so in cold weather, less so as it warms up. I know you have to be very careful working on air bag system, disconnect the battery and wait 10 minutes. I have heard that this is a known problem on Jeeps, this is a 1999 Grand Cherokee with 150,000 miles. I think ti ha something to do with connector in a dash, what can I do, a car is on its last legs, will not spend money on a dealer to fix, ripped off too often during life of car. I am afraid it will not pass an Ill environmental test (not related to pollution control) I suspect it is setting a trouble code but have not checked as of yet, hasn't warmed up in Illinois yet this year.
View 2 RepliesThe airbag warning light came on last week and stayed on for my hour commute home. Later on that same evening, I took the car out again, and the light was off. Stayed off for about 3 or 4 days and now comes on intermittently. I called the dealership today to try and set something up, and they said if if it's coming on intermittently, check under the seat for anything obstructing the airbag sensor and whatnot. I looked today and found nothing (I keep my car extremely clean) but none the less found no issue. The service advisor from the dealership also said that I need not bring it in unless the light stays on all the time. But I'm insisting on bringing it in in the next few days. I'm just concerned that either the airbags may inflate without cause, or may not inflate in the event of an accident. Should I wait until the light stays on? Going into the service department at my local dealer is always at least a 2 hour ordeal and they don't issue loaner vehicles unless they absolutely have to. I just don't want to waste my time.

View 5 RepliesWe have had a 2006 Prius for almost 2 years now. In the past few months the passenger airbag seemed to become intermittent where the light would say "Off" even with a passenger. More recently it stays that way all the time. Also, the seatbelt warning light does not come on with a passenger when this light says "Off." In my early searches, I found some references to problems with the wiring harness, so I fiddled under the seat.
On two separate occasions I have unplugged and plugged in one of the connections and the airbag works. The first time, it only worked once. The second time, it worked for about a day. The first time, the car was off when I unplugged it. The second time, I foolishly did it while we were going down the interstate. When I plugged it back in, the red malfunction light came on. We turned the car off next time traffic stopped and it worked as it should when we turned it back on. I don't know if it might be the pin connectors, loose wires, or something else completely.
Ok .. Airbag warning light is on..... And won't go off i have taken battery off try reset that way nothing. Also steering wheel lights are off...
Only thing working on instruments on steering wheel is the left side is the radio and phone and volume and mode right side of steering wheel not working but nothing is illuminated!!!!???? On wheel

Thought maybe it was because i left the back seat folded down for almost a week, but since then i have placed it back completely into position. Disconnected the battery and re-connected it, still stays on..
I have also driving almost 200 miles with the seat back in normal position, was hoping it would re-set by now.. I recently installed a stereo system in the car, everything got hooked up to the factory stereo, and the light didn't come on for almost 2 weeks after the install.. Could it be because of the back seat being folded down?
My subs hit pretty hard, could this be enough to trigger some sensor? I have two Rockford Fosgate 12" P2 subs, powered by a RF 1000 watt amp. I've asked many Car Audio specialist about air-bags deploying from hard hitting bass, and i pretty much got laughed at every time, none of them have ever herd of it happening, and i would think by now there would be some videos on you-tube of this happening.. I cant find anything anywhere saying airbags have ever been deployed from hard hitting bass...
I've also herd moving the front seats forward and back could trip some kind of sensor? My fiance is only 5'2 and i am 6' and its our only car so needless to say the seat gets moved quite often.. I know i should go to the dealer and have it hooked up to the "code reader" .. Just don't want to look stupid when i show up..
I have a 06 Pontiac Solstice. In hot weather the air bag warning light comes on. The temperature usually has to be near 90. My local mechanic has no ideas. The dealer says to bring it in while it is showing the alert. Hard to do.

View 1 RepliesI have two Sonatas, an 08 and 09 both limited and both 4 cylinders. On the 09 I treated myself to a custom leather and wood steering wheel. I disconnected the battery and let the car sit for a couple hours before starting swap. Then took my time and disconnected all wires and used a puller to remove the old wheel. Transferred the cruse and radio switches to the new wheel and reassembled in the reverse of removal. No issues everything went smooth. Reconnected the battery and started the car now the airbag light is on The light comes on when you initially turn the key goes off for about five or six seconds and then comes back on when engine is running. I did a search with no luck. I will disassemble and recheck everything.

Yesterday out of nowhere the red Airbag light on the dash illuminated when I started the car. This has never happened before. I tried turning the car off and on, but it just came back.
The light comes on normally, then goes out. It then comes right back on at the same time the "passenger airbag off" light illuminates.
I made a quick check of the connections under the passenger seat and none seemed loose. I'm planning on taking a closer look and disconnecting/reconnecting the terminals to see if anything is obviously wrong.
I'm pretty mad that my Sonata has another problem. It only has 80k miles. I've owned it just over one year and I've had the following problems:
-fuel overflowing. I haven't been able to sort this one out yet.
-OCV failure. I replaced it myself.
-Lots of ABS and brake warning lights. Dealer eventually told me I needed a new ABS pump for nearly $2000.
-Now this airbag problem.
I'm definitely very dissatisfied with the reliability of this car. If I had it to do over again, I definitely would have spent a little more to get another brand. This has been the most unreliable car I've owned in my 13 years of driving.
