View 8 RepliesI just bought a 2009 Hyunda Sonata, 4 cylinder limited edition with 82k miles on it about a month ago. It was maintained to the suggested maintenance schedule by Hyundai dealers prior to me owning it.
after about 2 weeks, it started having issues when slowing down. I narrowed it down to being a harsh downshift from 4th to 3rd when breaking when cold. After driving for 10 minutes it doesn't do it anymore.
My temporary fix is to manually downshift it into 3rd when I have to slow down. It seems to be that it stays in 4th too long and shifts late into 3rd, but I wouldn't think downshifting late would really matter.
i drained the 30000 mile fluid two weeks ago because it was harsh downshifting when coming to a stop... I was curious if others noticed a lot of metal sludge sticking to the magnetized drain plug???..
View 3 RepliesMy 2009 Sonata (4 Cyl.) has begun to downshift very rough while coming to a stop from about 20 mph. At first I thought it was the brakes, but now I'm convinced it's the transmission. Essentially it "jerks" a couple of times before stopping. It started happening at 30,000+ and only happens when transmission is still cold. Once I've driven for a bit it doesn't happen.
View 7 RepliesOr just can I just replace and go. I'm having some issues with trans on my 06 gs430. It's having a downshift clunk/jerk when coming to a stop. I just purchased a used trans, but would like to see if it could be ecu related. I have seen other comments from other member that they replaced the trans, but still the issues were present. Some stated that there was some issues with the ecu holding the trans solenoid longer then the usual.
View 6 RepliesMy 09' has developed the abrupt downshift issue at 20 mph when cold. Once the transmission is warmed up, the problem goes away. There is a Service Bulletin on this problem so it is known and a fix is in place. The fix according to the Service Instruction is to remap the transmission software.
How this remap affected their vehicle. My car has been returning great gas mileage, and I am concerned that this fix could hurt that. If mileage is adversely affected, I'd rather live with the downshift IF it won't hurt anything.
My Hyundai is giving me a major headache. I bought a 2009 sonata used a few months back. Not long after I got it, I was having issues with it jerking around 20 mph. Sometimes, it would have a few issues with it jerking some when I was taking off. This was only right after the car was started. I took it to a local Aamco. The guy told me that it was a 2-1 downshift pump. He "relearned" the transmission and the problem went away. Now, it is back. At the time, he did some research and thought it may stem from a calibration update they had issued. He didn't have the Hyundai software to try that fix.
View 3 RepliesI have 2010 Sonata with 4 cylinder engine and 50,000 miles. For a while now, my car has a real hard downshift at around 20mph. When i put the car in shiftronics mode and do not downshift manually, at the 20mph hard downshift the car is shifting from 4th to 3rd. A while back i had the TSB for hard downshift and also did a tranny fluid flush. Neither has seemed to solve the problem.
Also, the car has a annoying electrical hum/whine that is coming from the engine bay. When i shift car into neutral the hum/whine goes away. Also sometimes when shifting into lower gears the hum/whine will go away for a short period of time.
My wife's 2004 v-6 has finally come to the point of harsh downshifting between 2nd and 1st,that she finally said something to me about it and that is unusual as she has the kids and music going so she hardly ever notices anything like that. I took it to the dealer at the 60k service and demonstrated the problem to them. Well, they did some software update 01210000 and it was supposed to be fixed. Well it isn't. and of course as before it does this intermittently so after they updated and drove it for a mile they considered it fixed. BUT it still does it.... It is a real harsh clunk/downshift just as you almost stop going from 2nd to 1st ? you feel it and hear it ....
View 3 RepliesI have a 2009 SE, about 120k miles. A few months ago I noticed a creaking noise from the front brakes when nearing the end of a complete stop, and the closer completely stopped, the more pronounced the sound is. I took it to my mechanic assuming I needed new brake pads (had put about 40k on the car without replacing them).
The mechanic told me the pads were fine but the rotors needed to be "cleaned," which he did. The sound stopped VERY briefly but then returned and is getting worse. It's not quite a grinding, more like a tight-sounding creaking that "rolls" as the car stops.
Now, they don't feel any less effective or impaired, and as I said, it's only near the end of the stop, maybe 20mph and below. No noise in the beginning part of the stop. If the brake pads and rotors are both fine as my mechanic claimed...
I bought a 2010 GLS 4cyl and within the first week started having shifting issues. Initially it was only when it was colder than 30 degrees outside and would only shift harshly between 1st and 2nd. Once I had driven a few miles and warmed the car up, everything was OK. It's still an intermittent issue, but now it will do it when outside morning temps are in the 50's and 60's.
I've read the TSB for 6cyl 09's and saw a post in the Santa Fe forum that sounded identical, so at least I'm not the first to experience this.
I took it back to the dealership knowing it probably would not shift badly when they test drove it because we had run out of cold mornings. I picked the car up after they reset adaptive learning and said there were no updates available for the computer. (And also being told I had bad gas in the car. Another story for another time...)
Until it starts doing it at fairly regular intervals, there isn't any use taking back to the dealership as it's very inconvenient for me to get there.
I checked the link that had TSB's and didn't see anything for the 2010's. Also, is there any place where I could check and see when software updates come out and what issues are addressed?
Lexus IS350 ... Noticed a reasonably quiet clunk from the car when coming to a stop? It happens when the transmission automatically shifts into 1st gear with your foot on the brakes.
I noticed that in my car, you can feel a slight lurch forward as the transmission downshifts into first when approaching a stop sign. If I am barely on the brakes, I feel the slight lurch but don't hear anything. Under normal braking, that slight lurch happens along with a clunk. You wouldn't hear it with the radio on, but it's very repeatable and with the windows down you can hear it as well coming from under the car somewhere.
This last month I have been noticing that either when I am coming to a stop the transmission down shift hard.... and when moving from a stop it gives two bucks like a standard does when u let the clutch out to fast... so i went into do my oil change and asked them to look at it.... guess what its getting a new tranny..... makes me want to trade it in when i get it fixed....
View 14 RepliesI have an intermittent issue where the tiggy seems to downshift harshly to 1st when coming to a stop while in D. Almost like dropping the clutch but not enough to chirp the tires - just enough to feel a thump. I figure it's related to the engine braking "feature" of this car but doing it incorrectly. It seems as though once it's happening, it stays like that for a while, but the next day for example, it will be fine.
I've been observing it for some time now and it doesn't seem temperature specific. In fact, I have a hunch it might be electronic even since if I turn off ESC it stops occurring. Turning off brake auto-hold doesn't make a difference either (this is turned off automatically if ESC is shut off).
I hate taking my car into the dealer for intermittent issues... they are notorious at dismissing something if it doesn't happen right then and there in front of their face. Thought maybe I should check the forums incase their's a TSB or something to fix this exact issue or if it's just unique to my tig.

My 2007 Sonata V6 limited would produce a pop / clunk sound (sometimes 2-3 in succession) under these circumstances
- Car is coming to a stop (brake applied)
- When I release my brakes, press on the accelerator, a pop / clunk sound would ensue
It doesn't happen all the time. I noticed it's more prevalent when it's hot outside or when I've driven the car for a little bit
My mechanic re-tightened the subframe bolts and visually checked bushings / ball joints but everything seems tight.
Is there a replaceable bulb for the check engine light? Mines stop coming on when starting the car. I think that's why I failed the emissions test. I didn't check with the attendant in the office to get an explanation.

View 10 RepliesWhen to the dealer today. There is a noise coming from the steering rack on my new Sonata 2009 2.4l. I made a short video to show it to the mechanic with the rattle sound coming from the steering rack. He pulled the car on a hoist and confirmed car need a new steering rack.
View 2 RepliesMy 2010, 4 cyl. auto started giving me hard downshifts awhile ago, when cold. Mainly going from 4 to 3, and 3 to 2. I had the tranny fluid changed a few months ago at 56,000 miles, but no difference. So, that left me with the dealer and this is their diagnosis:
Updated ECM and TCM and hard shift still present. Vehicle will require new PCM (TCM?) to resolve problem.
My car also had the hard downshift when engine was cold and under 30mph. I seen where Sbr 711 had posted the TSB 10-AT-007-1
I printed this and took to the local dealer & also showed where it was mentioned as a recall.. The advisor looked up on his computer and showed no recalls for the 09 sonata?
I went ahead and scheduled the reprogram update and was told the technician can pull up more info on recalls than the advisor can? Any way they did the reprogram today and $89. later still no recall? How do I prove that in fact this is a recall & get refunded?
My 09 Sonata GLS has 50k miles on it. I bought it as a demo model with 9k on it (regret that) as new ... who knows how it was treated.
at 40k miles I noticed that in the morning when I was braking the car would feel like it was slipping out of gear momentarily and it was pretty rough. After a few minutes it would stop and I could continue on my way. The car is an automatic. I noticed it if I let the car decelerate enough that it dropped into first on its own, or if I used the brakes. I figured it must be due to the cold weather or something and was hoping it would clear up. This was only happening after 8 hours of non-use, overnight in the cold.
