Sonata NF (2006-10) :: 2008 Transmission Not Going Into D
Sep 8, 2015
All of the sudden it's not going into D, instead wants to manually be driven and having to downshift instead of upshift... so weird. It' erratic. Would it be a sensor, or internal issue with the transmission? Or shifter just sticking?

Transmission Oil leak ... I have a 2008 Sonata 2.4 Auto 60,000 miles just noticed a small transmission leak it isn't leaking much but is definitely there its around mainly the passenger side of transmission area close to drive shaft but is hard to pin point.

At the beginning it was just CEL on. I checked the code and change transmission range sensor but it worked for few days only. Light came back and transmission sometimes stop to shift automatically. D1 on display and driving only on first gear, but when I switch to tiptronic - manually everything works great?!

Just got my 06 3.3 GLS. Sometimes it seems to hang in between 1st and 2nd gear. No amount of throttle will make the car go or rev up until you let off and it changes gear. Then its fine. 79k miles, no cel. When i say it wont rev it will be at full throttle and engine and vehicle speed doesn't change. I just had the heater core replaced but not sure how this would relate to that issue? Someone said he thought maybe the trans needs to relearn its shift points after having the battery disconnected but not sure I buy that.

I went for my regular oil change and I asked my dealer to look for a strange vibration coming from the front wheels mostly noticeable at 30KMh and over 70. He diagnosed a vibration coming from the tranny. Wheel bearing are fine and tires and brand new (Toyo Tourevo) and freshly aligned.
My dealer opened a case with Hyundai Canada to have my tranny changed. BTW, Sonata NF 2010 I4, 5 speed auto trans. 50,000KMs

Ever since I bought my 06 LX in November last year, it's either the transmission or possibly the engine that makes a whining sound. It's a very noticeable sound, every passenger I have mentions the sound. It starts as soon as I step on the gas.
I'm finally getting annoyed with the sound, and I'm wondering what I could possibly do. It's just out of warranty, 71000. I'll try to have a video recording of the sound by tomorrow.

I bought a 2010 GLS 4cyl and within the first week started having shifting issues. Initially it was only when it was colder than 30 degrees outside and would only shift harshly between 1st and 2nd. Once I had driven a few miles and warmed the car up, everything was OK. It's still an intermittent issue, but now it will do it when outside morning temps are in the 50's and 60's.
I've read the TSB for 6cyl 09's and saw a post in the Santa Fe forum that sounded identical, so at least I'm not the first to experience this.
I took it back to the dealership knowing it probably would not shift badly when they test drove it because we had run out of cold mornings. I picked the car up after they reset adaptive learning and said there were no updates available for the computer. (And also being told I had bad gas in the car. Another story for another time...)
Until it starts doing it at fairly regular intervals, there isn't any use taking back to the dealership as it's very inconvenient for me to get there.
I checked the link that had TSB's and didn't see anything for the 2010's. Also, is there any place where I could check and see when software updates come out and what issues are addressed?

Recently my 2006 2.4 L encounter auto transmission jerk intermittently with P0734 and P0765(bad D shifting solenoid. Change the bad solenoid and the problems still occur. Later check all the wiring as per hyundai TSB and all seems to be ok. Then an error code appear that indicate bad ATM relay (auto transmission module). I interchange the suspected relay with the horn relays and the problems resolved. I did check the relay coil which is ok but the mechanical contacts is badly corroded that results in some resistance that causes the 12v supply to the Solenoids to be affected. (the relay is situated in the relay compartment next to battery).

I recently discovered that during our last flush-fill of the tranny, the shop underfilled by about a quart. (or so they claim the quantity to be) I brought it back when noticing the transmission was hesitating to shift gears, especially when cold. Unfortunately, the car was driven for about 5 months at this level before the problem was discovered. Any long term damage?

My father has an 05/06 4cyl Sonata automatic that he keeps in good shape. They commuted a fair distance before they retired last year, so the car has around 70k miles on it. He'd mentioned to me a few months back that it had a bit of a transmission hesitation when cruising at a steady 75-85km/h. I'd forgotten about it until I drove the car the other day...
What happens is that after cruising for around ten minutes at steady speed, the transmission begins to 'stutter'. It's not any huge event, but it's almost as if the engine was misfiring, which is the feeling you get. A small stuttering as power drops for a few tenths of a second, then comes back, then drops again, repeatedly. What he tells me he does to get away from this is to decelerate to a lower speed and hold there(~70km/h or lower) or repeatedly accelerate and decelerate gently from 75km/h to 85km/h. Both of these worked. I also found a third solution, that if you move the gear selector from 'D' to the 'manual shift' mode (it usually goes to '4' in these circumstances) the problem disappears and the car drives fine. Regular upshifts and downshifts are fine in both automatic and manual modes, and the fluid level is normal.
What burns me is that he'd taken the car in for servicing before the end of his regular warranty period and was told, "Oh, that's normal. They ALL do that. It's just the computer trying to re-learn how you drive." I can't STAND how dealer techs try to take advantage of people like this. Yes, the ECUs self-learn and yes there can be dramatic issues when a new ECU or transmission or whatnot is installed until it happens, but this kind of thing doesn't happen 'out of the blue'! I told him to take it back and put the screws to 'em that they should fix it under warranty since that's when the problem was reported. Otherwise, push them for a really good deal on a new Sonata Turbo...

My 2006 Sonata has 63K miles and today started jerking (Hunting) after about 10 miles. Here is what I know. It starts on a level run and disappears when on an incline, but as soon as the crest is reached, and on the downside, it starts hunting again. When it is jerking, around 55 to 60 mph, I switch the transmission lever to Autostick and it stops, back into drive again and it starts again. This is so repeatable there has to be a connection. EVERY time I switch to Autostick the jerking stops, end when I put it back into drive, it starts again. The jerking is severe enough that it is easily detectable. It appears that when the transmission is under load, like going uphill, the jerking stops.

Came home from a 3-hour trip. Back in my garage my wife is outside while I maneuver the car into place, and she tells me she hears weird ticking, which I can actually notice myself as coming from the front right-hand side (sitting at the wheel).
Turns out when the brakes are applied, the car is not moving, and the shift lever is in D -- there is a ticking sound coming from the transmission area. Shifting to N or P or R -- no noise, only when in D. The ticking is not consistent, it's changing from slower to faster to slow again, no matter how much I put pressure on the brakes (it's not the brakes squeaking).

I own a 2009 Kia Optima 2.4 Auto. My good friend and his wife own a 2009 Sonata 2.4 Auto. My car has around 40k and his has 50k. We both notice a very strange noise that started well over a year ago on both cars. After driving for a while, then you stop at a stop light or go through drive-thru, the transmissions BUZZ. If you put the car in Neutral or Park, the buzzing stops. Even if you put the car back in gear, it won't make the noise again until it decides to do it again. They both only do this when the transmission fluid is hot. Never does it when they are cool and have not been driven. Both cars have had the transmission fluid changed at 30k and this noise was mentioned to both dealers at the time. Both cars had transmission related TSB software updates done, but nothing changed as far as the noise. Neither car would buzz for either dealer, so they were no support. I just find this odd that it is BOTH cars. Of course they have the same engine and trans, I just wonder how many more folks have this odd ball noise. It really sounds like a power steering pump thats low on fluid. Fluid levels are perfect.

My daughter has a 2010 Sonata with a 4 cylinder and an automatic transmission. She is pretty frustrated with an intermittent problem. Every once in awhile, especially if the engine is cold, the car jerks while slowing down. She believes it is the transmission when it down shifts. I have driven the car and have not been able to duplicate the problem myself. The dealer recently changed the mapping for the transmission in hopes that would work but it hasn't. The dealer hasn't been able to duplicate the condition either.

I noticed that recently my 2007 Sonata (108k Miles) is making a knocking sound when it shifts into second gear. It happens only when I back out of my garage and drive down the street and the car is cold. After that there is no more noise, and the transmission is shifting through the gears smoothly.
I recently replaced the transmission fluid, about 5k miles ago and I used the recommended type.
I read other postings with people having the same problem, and in those cases they pointed to the ABS self-check which occurs when you first start out. But this is definitely not my case as the noise is coincidental with shifting into 2nd gear and it only does it when the transmission is cold.
Could this be caused by the fluid temperature or maybe because the fluid has not had a chance to circulate through the transmission and fill all the cavities? Its rather strange thought that I just noticed it in the last month or so, if that were the case I should have had this problem before.

Randomly for the past couple of weeks, my 2009 2.4 automatic has the transmission letters on the dash rapidly flickering... ex.: driving in D, the display flickers D-P-D-P or D-N-D-N etc very fast. It's not happening in Tiptronic mode and the car is driving very well with excellent mileage.
From what i can see, this happens when the car is in motion only. My thought is a bad contact at a sensor somewhere that loses contact on and off with bumps in the road, but not when stopped? The car has only 50,000km.
It is still under extended warranty, therefore a 50$ deductible for any repair under warranty... whatever issue i had with this car was always intermittent so the dealer won't fix anything if they cannot see the issue and have the nasty habit of charging me like a half hour for trying to diagnose without success. Guess what happens every time I drop off at the dealer? issue not present of course.

My trans is getting to fourth and then will go back to third and stay there, two codes, P0734 + 0735, which means the converter isn't locking up in 4&5th gears. And it physically feels that way. after clearing and cycling ignition I can get it to stay in fifth and use cruise control, as long as I stay above 40mph, below that it goes to third and then cruise control also stops working....

I recently had the transmission fluid changed in my 2009 Sonata NF 4 cyl. Current mileage is 60,000 miles. Directly afterwards, the transmission started "sliding" into 4th gear from 3rd gear. I assume that fluid contamination has caused a clog somewhere in the transmission. I have had the tsb done on the car for the transmission and the fluid had been exchanged @ 30,000 miles prior to this service.

I have an 09 Sonata that jerks when automatically down shifting just before coming to a stop or slowing to make sharp turn. Car has 130k miles and I've never changed transmission fluid. BTW...it's been a GREAT car!

I have a 2009 Hyundai Sonata V6 3.3. I'm currently about to hit 65k miles. About 2 weeks ago i felt the transmission slipping while I was on the highway. Yesterday my check engine light came on. I took it to my mechanic; according to the reader, the Dampener Clutch System was the problem. This morning when I took the car out, I realized that the Check Engine light went away but still could feel the transmission slipping.
