2008 Sonata 2.4L ... I have an issue, hopefully minor, but when I drive over bumps I hear a slight rattle in the front suspension. My first guesses are either a sway bar, struts, or tie-rods.
My second issue is the steering wheel isn't centered. Best way to describe it is if you draw a line dead center on the top of the wheel and remember that spot, when driving straight it's about an inch or two to the right.
2008 2.4 GLS auto, 64000 miles
Only taken this car on 2 highway road trips. 2 years ago = 34mpg on 900 mile trip (@36000 miles), last week = 31 mpg, EXACT same trip, this time in December, last time in September. Other difference - slightly perceptible tick noticeable if I stand in front of car idling.
Bought July 2009 (almost 24 months old) @ 32000 miles, oil changes every 3000 miles since, tranny fluid at 60000.

For the last 1 1/2 weeks stated hearing this rattle sound when going over speed bumps, or any bumps/imperfections in the road.
It looks to be coming from the front suspension, I can also feel the rattle a little in the steering wheel, not sure if it was always there but now there is a noise to go along with it now, so noticing it.
I just have a couple questions. First one I have a creaking in my front suspension when I go over bumps if I'm doing 50+mph it isn't heard anything slower you can hear it especially over speed bumps in parking lots. What could that be exactly? And also I'm looking to upgrade my headunit already got a single din but I'm wanting to replace the factory subwoofer. Can I replace it with a low power 8" aftermarket sub for better sound?

I'm considering buying a used '06 Sonata LX with 137k miles, and the front suspension squeaks badly. I read the entire thread about replacing upper control arms to see what I might get into if I purchase as-is, and while it honestly doesn't seem too bad I know other problems may lurk. Would you buy this car with a squeaky suspension, or would you expect the seller to fix it first? Would you insist on them replacing all front UCA + LCA + struts + mounts + alignment at the same time? Any issues to worry about with the rear?
The car was amazingly clean and well-cared for overall. It was parked outside and the interior and exterior look better than my '05 Magnum that was garaged! I did notice rust on the wiper arms, one screw that was out of the passenger rear grab handle (above door). Also the seller told me the front passenger door lock won't work electronically 98% of the time, and the drivers rear lock won't work 70% of the time. I'm assuming the solenoids are bad or something is stuck - I can see the locks twitch a little bit when I depress the lock/unlock switch, but not enough to actuate the locks.
So when I turn and am hard on the gas I get a clicking and slight clunking sound from the front end. Wants to confirm its the CV joints before I rip it apart?
View 6 RepliesMy wife has a 2006 Sonata with 75k on it currently. As the weather has gotten colder in the last few months the front suspension has started squeaking... Its sounds like rubberish squeaking noise from both sides of the vehicle.. Sounds to be more towards the top the car. As the weather gets colder it gets louder and you hear it more often. I was thinking maybe it was front strut mounts? I had stood outside the car and tried to bounce the front end to see if i could pin point it better...and I can't seem to duplicate the noise by bouncing the vehicle while its parked.. but soon as I drive it.. I hear it again.

In the winter time the front passenger side is very squeaky, esp when going over bumps...
I had it into a shop to have a wheel bearing done and they said the balljoints needed to be replaced...
Well, all that did was firm things up, the ride was just as squeaky...
Now in summer, it's not nearly as bad... First thing in the morning there's some squeak over bumps but nothing like it is in the winter...
What the heck would this be?

View 5 RepliesI have a 2005 NF V6 Sonata Elite - for some time now there has been a sporadic clunking noise in and around the suspension or front drivers side wheel of my car. It got a lot worse a week ago when I took the car off sealed roads for a short distance, almost sounding like a CV that had gone. However a mechanic checked the car over a few days ago and found the CV was fine, as was the driveline. It seems to clunk more when turning, and when I put the power on or off. I also detect a slight vibration or hum coming from the area concerned when taking gentle bends at moderate speed on smooth roads. I can assume the wheel bearings are fine, although the mechanic I went to perhaps isn't very familiar with the make/model of car. They went around the suspension and tightened some of the struts, which made a small improvement I think, but the car is still making the noise. What was the cause of the noise if known?
View 4 RepliesWhen driving I hear, not feel, a slight thumping noise that if I had to guess would say is coming from the passenger side front. When I let off the gas the noise becmes more prominent and you can feel the thumping. Also when I apply the brakes heavily the sound/feel goes back to the same as if I was driving. I'm thinking CV joint/axles or spindle bearings, but I cant understand why the condition is at it's worst when I'm coasting. Has this "noise while coasting" problem.
View 1 RepliesOk so I replaced my upper strut mount and my struts in the front along with the shocks in the rear.......... the squeak is still present when i go over a rougher bump and it is cold ..................SO i went on hma service and saw this...................
Symptom "Squeak or grunt-noise from the front suspension, occurs more in cold ambient temperatures-more noticeable over rough roads or when turning"
Suspect Area "Front stabilizer bar"
Remedy "Under these conditions, the noise is acceptable."

I have an 08 Sonata GLS and today an annoying rattle was coming from what seems to be deep in the dash on the passenger side. I checked the glove box, closed all the doors tight etc. etc. but it is still there. It seems like a vibration as it is pretty constant but it does change going over bumps etc. Is it a known issue?

View 6 RepliesI have a 2007 Sonata Ltd (63000 miles) and had a clunk in the front suspension. I had the front upper control arms replaced (which were visually badly worn) and that fixed the problem. But now, a several months later another similar clunking noise has developed when I go over those small speed bumps in parking lots.
View 18 RepliesFor a few months now, I've had a slight rattle coming from my car's front end (2002 V6), but it has been getting louder. The noise is most pronounced at 30+ mph on rough (old) road. Yesterday, I jacked up the front end to do the tie-rod and ball-joint tests. There is no play from either top-bottom or front-back wiggling.
Here's what I did notice while doing those tests:
1. It looks like the hockey-puck sized control arm bushings are cracking. Is there a source for poly replacements (and how much do they effect the car's ride)? Or is there a better-than-OEM rubber replacement?
2. When the cars was jacked up, I could turn the wheels a little bit (maybe a quarter turn while the tranny was in park). There was some noise coming from behind the hub. It sounded like the meshing of gears, or metal parts intercoking with each other. Is this normal? The bearings don't make any noise when it's driving.
I just replaced both front strut mounts on my 2005 Outback 3.0L. I was 100% sure that it would resolve an ongoing noise/rattle in the front end when driving over bumps and generally rough roads. It worked with some of the noise because the strut mount bearings were shot. But much to my disappointment after putting everything back together I still have a rattle (more like the sound when you shake a shoe box with a tennis ball inside it) in the right front suspension somewhere. When lifted the right front wheel is solid with no wobble left to right or top to bottom so I"m thinking it is not a tie rod but I am not a professional mechanic. Should I take the right front strut back off and check the new mount or is there an easier answer.
View 3 RepliesMy 2012 Avalon developed a slight rattle at 9000 miles that continued to get worse. I took off the right front wheel today and found the top caliper bolt partially loosened. I could turn it with my FINGERS! The other one was tight as were the ones on the left side.
To diagnose this rattle, find a bumpy road that makes it rattle. Put your foot lightly on the brake (to load the caliper). If the noise goes away, it is probably a loose caliper bolt.
I have a rattle/loose noise on my 09 Elantra front suspension driver's side when going over bumps. Had a similar noise on right rear and the dealer replaced the struts under warranty and that issue was solved. The service manager is balking at replacing the front struts however because they "look" okay. Front sway bar bushings have been replaced and everything else gone over pretty good. The car has 72K and the mechanic thinks it is probably the strut by way of elimination. Hyundai Canada says final decision is up to manager who is unconvinced about the whole scenario. What the heck I can do next or had strut trouble on the front. It seems there has been a significant issue with the rear.
