Saturn - SL2 :: 2001 - Metallic Rattling Sound At Certain RPM Idling Speeds
Aug 28, 2011
I have a 2001 Saturn SL2 1.9 liter DOHC. I am getting a metallic rattling sound from under the car. The sound happens only at certain RPM idling speeds; what could this be?

I've recently been having a metallic creaking/rattle go on when idle or moving at slow speeds. I took it in during my 20k service and they said there was something with a cable and the heat shield... the service manager had also said something about the catlytic converter - but when I re-checked the service slip - nothing. This was originally in March.
The noise came back again recently so I had a different dealer check it out when I finally had the fuel tank recall done. They confirmed the noise and checked the heat shield (I had told them about the original complaint), but said there wasn't much that can be done - they made sure all the bolts were tight, but the noise was coming from the heat shield "flexing."
Most of the time it's fine and the noise went away for several months. It's subtle again, but if it becomes constant - it seems like I have a valid argument to have the heat shield replaced - seems defective.

I am the original owner of a 2007 Camry SE V6 with 95K miles. The car has been meticulously maintained. About 2 weeks ago I started to notice a mysterious sound coming from the passenger side of the engine ONLY when the engine is idling. It has a higher, light pitch but when revving the engine slightly it goes away. Obviously when driving it can not be heard with all the other road noise etc. Also it makes this sound at different times, sometimes days with no noise, very irregularly. I checked that section of the engine bay and see no moisture, leakage or discoloration anywhere. Also serpentine belt shows no wear or wobble. Could it come from the water pump? I am very concerned that something will soon snap off, break and leave me stranded.

When accelerating up a steep grade the engine will ping (rattling metallic sound) when reaching a certain RPM, but stop pinging as I continue to push the accelerator down and increase the RPM. Should I be concerned? Could it be something else, loose exhaust heat shield or something? Or is this normal behavior for a gasoline engine? My old Honda Fit never had engine ping/knock that i can recall in its 200,000km of service running the same 87 octane gas.

My 2002 Dodge Grand Caravan has a sound metallic rattling at about transaxle area (I am not sure if it's a transaxle issue) when it's cold but when it's at operating temperature, I don't hear it anymore. Fluid level is correct and clean, I just have the fluid changed. Shifting is fine, just annoying sound, not loud but it can be heard easily.

Usually happens after car is warmed up. Rattles only while stopped and transmission still in drive. If I shift into Neutral or Park, rattling stops.
Last time I had a problem similar to this, dealer said it was a heat shield making the noise and they said they removed the heat shield (didn't specify what the heat shield was for.
Now I'm wondering if the heat shield was removed, what else this could be now...planning on taking it in in a few days.

Front end makes metallic rattling/clanking sound. This happens when I make a right-hand turn, and the noise comes from the left-front wheel area. I describe it as the sound of dropping a handful of pots and pans.

Driving an '03 Hyundai Elantra. I've noticed that occasionally when turning and also when driving at around 55mph or so, there is a metallic rattling sound that seems to be coming from the front driver side of the car. What this could be?

Problem description: A loud metallic rattling sound from under the car under moderate to heavy engine load, only when engine/exhaust is/are cold. It is noticeable from within the cabin with the windows rolled up and the sunroof closed. Crack a window or the sunroof and it's pretty loud. The first time I heard I, I thought "this is not good".
This is not an octane ping or valve train noise. It sounds like a coffee can with marbles being shaken in concert which what might be the rapping of a V8 engine's exhaust. I had a Sunbeam Tiger that rapped in the upper rpm ranges and this reminded me of that but instead of rapping, it shakes a can with marbles.
There has been much discussion and speculation as to what causes this. It does seem to occur only with late - 04 and up V8 Touaregs with the "sport" exhaust that replaced the "std"(?) exhaust used on the majority of the 04s.
Observation: I looked very closely at the heat shields, looking for ways they could rattle. On the passenger side (LHD), the heat shield has three main sections:
- Front: around/near the secondary cat (tightly secured)
- Rear: around/near the rear differential (tightly secured)
- Middle: between the two mentioned above (loosely secured)
The three sections overlap a little where they meet. It was very easy to tap on the middle shield and make a loud metallic sound. I put my finger between the two shields (where they meet) to isolate the two metal pieces and tapped again, and the noise was gone.
Theory: The harmonic resonance of the exhaust under load vibrates the middle heat shield and it rattles against the front and/or rear shields. As the shields heat up, they flex enough to provide clearance between each other and the noise goes away. This may be unique to the "sport" exhaust if (and I am only speculating) the heat shields were changed (in design or fitment) when they changed the exhaust.
Experiment: I tried a very simple experiment. I slightly bent the edges of the middle shield (~1/2 inch) where it was coming in contact with the front and rear shields. The allowed me to tap rather hard on any of the shields without them rattling against each other.
Result: I make the tweaks to the shields Sunday night. When I drove to work this morning, I put the transmission in sport mode and ran WOT until it shifted. Normally, I would have heard the sound (very loudly) but it was gone. No metallic sound. Not completely convinced, I repeated the experiment on the way home and, again, the sound was gone.
Summary: It was cool out when I was going to, and from, work (64F) and this would normally be the perfect set up for making the sound. I think that tweaking the heat shield has solved the noise on my Touareg. I am tempted to go back under there and pop-rivet a little brace between the shields so that they cannot rattle against each other again. On the other hand, I may just leave it be and do the pop-rivets if the noise comes back.
Anyway, I was excited to find a potential solution for my Touareg and wanted to share it will you all. I will post back after a while and report how it goes in the long term. Lastly, I really liked being able to put the air suspension in xtra-offroad and get under the car (easily) without using a jack....

Recently I started hearing a rattling/grinding metallic sound coming off the right rear while driving slowly. This sound is not reproduced when braking. At first it started while doing sharp right turns only, now its ever present while driving. I showed it to a mechanic he says rotors needs to be replaced. Is he right? 2003 Honda Accord V6....

At idle, what sounds like my transmission is making a scratchy/rattling sound that I haven't noticed before. What it is? (Be careful it's loud.)

I have a 2015 IS350 F-Sport. While accelerating, the engine sounds fine, but it sounds aweful when idling. Don't know how else to describe it other than like a rattling sound...it's just not smooth. Is this "normal" or should i schedule a service appt for my car?

I have an older 2001 Honda accord I4 about 160k miles on it. I recently noticed that there's a rattling sound when the car in in idle (800RPM) but it disappear when I rev it up to higher RPM or while driving. The noise can't be heard inside the cabin and can only heard outside. The noise also only appears when it is warmed (engine running for about 3 - 5 minutes after cold start). I read from other board about a loose or worn out heat shield so I went under the car and try to look for a loose of broken parts but I cant find any. I removed the cat heat shield but the problem still exist. I don't know what else to check. Car seems run normal, I don't notice any change in performance and no check engine or what so ever. I just wan't to make sure it is not something on the engine, transmission, or something that will snowball to a bigger issues. I don't know how long its been rattling but I just noticed it the other day.

I started hearing a small rattling sound coming at low speeds while driving. It's a tic tic rattle which almost sounds like a cat, but it only does it while driving and not all the times. I had a smiling noise once on one of my cars and it was a torque converter. It's not the brakes, as applying brakes doesn't work. Also the whole front end is brand new. It motor related. Can a heat shield for a cat come loose?
I'm also dealing with a wind noise coming from a driver side window. My car has the updated thicker windows. The noise goes away if I lower the driver side window just a fraction. So having it closed all the way creates more noise. Other than that wind noise is at a minimum.

I have 124,000 miles on my 2002 subaru impreza outback sport and this car runs very well and has been maintained well however the last couple weeks I have noticed a slight rattling sound toward the right front side of the car almost as if there were pebbles inside the wheel covers when the car is driven at low speed and I begin to accelerate. It also sounds as if the rattling could also be coming from the exhaust also as if it were loose fitting but the tailpipe is on the left looking from the rear of the car. Another possibility I thought of was the fender was loose or the tire was rubbing against the wheel well or something. It is one of those small annoying sounds that does not seem to warrant bringing in to a mechanic yet but I am curious about what that is.

I can hear rattling coming from the driver's door at low speeds on uneven roads. At higher speeds there are no noises, it only happens at speeds of up to 50 km/hour. I removed the door panel and there are no loose parts.

I've noticed, maybe a handful of times in the 5k miles I've owned the car, that the engine will rattle excessively for maybe 30 seconds or so on a drive. This only happens during high load/low speeds and I think after the engine has been off for at least about 10-15 minutes. It doesn't happen on start up, only after the car is warm, but hasn't been using the engine for a bit. I'm thinking this is fuel enrichment (really rough running) because the cat has cooled.

I have a 2001 Saturn L200. My A/C doesn't work. My dad is a retired old school mechanic and can't figure it out. The compressor turns on, on occasion, we think it's not getting power because we connected the compressor directly to the battery and it turns on fine. Think it's some type of electrical issue. Also hear a clicking sound inside the cabin when I depress the brakes when my gear shift lights are off. Sometimes they work and doors lock automatically when I put it in drive, but other times the lights don't work and I get that clicking and my doors don't lock. I believe the issue is electrical and tied together with a/c issues, but have no idea where to look.

I am a brand new VW owner and new member of this site. Just recently I purchased a '02 Passat GLX 4motion (w/97k miles) for fairly good price knowing that it was involved in a rear end accident.
Now I am finding multiple issues with this car. It looks excellent from exterior or interior. I have three different issues (front and rear axle pinion seal leak, broken spring, gas leak only when tank is full) with this car but I would like to discuss the Broken Spring issue here.
When I go through rough road or bumps I hear a metallic noise (noise like key chiming) from the rear driver side along with a rattling noise (like wood or plastic board rattling) at the same time from the rear middle part of the car. I researched online and found few forums talking about the brake pad caliper spring making similar noises. I called a mechanic and I was told that it could be the muffler.
I took the wheel off and kicked and hit the axle area with rubber mallet, kicked the muffler - but no similar noise was produced. However I noticed that the spring coil (rear driver side) was broken right at the bottom. When I did online research I saw one forum talking about broken spring making similar noise. I did more research and found the part (OEM# 4B0 511 115 B).
My question is:
> Does this sound like what causing the noise? Could a broken spring cause metallic chime and a hard board rattling noise?
> Is it necessary to replace the spring along with the shock absorber? Can spring be replaced by itself?
> How hard is it to replace a spring?
> Do you have to have spring compressor to mount and unmount? Can you simply take the whole assembly without compressing it?
