My 2.2 crtd is the first ever diesel car i have bought, but i have noticed a whine especially when cold, pitch bieng raised as engine revs. Is this a characteristic of this car or am i in for a bill further down the line.
View 3 RepliesWe've got a 2011 Santa Fe V6 that's putting out a low pitch cyclical whine at speeds between 5 and 15 mph. It could be making the sound at higher speeds but if it is the engine/wind noise drown it out.
If you're coasting or braking and drop below 5-7 mph, the noise cuts out completely and abruptly. Makes noise regardless of A/C running or off. Sounds like a motor turning on and off. Never makes noise while parked and revved, only while moving at low speeds (stop and go traffic, driving through parking lots, etc) - and is just loud enough to drive us crazy wondering what it is!
Dealer service center checked it out for 3 days - 4 different techs drove it, all heard the noise, but none knew where it was coming from. When you're driving, it seems to be coming from the passenger side of the engine.
On a side note, we first started hearing this noise after we got it back from dealer service, where they replaced the TPS and A/C compressor. I'm wondering if it could be from something they had to move to access the compressor?
I own a 2010 AWD Santa Fe. It gets factory scheduled maintenance at the dealership. Since owning ( i bought it used from Dealer, it was driven by dealer) it has periodically revved while driving. Often at lower speeds while accelerating from a stop. The engine will rev and the car will act as if it is in neutral. Then, after a few seconds there will be a sharp jerk as the transmission(?) engages and the car lurches forward. My dealer told me it is normal. This does not seem normal.
View 1 RepliesI just bought a 2007 es350 yesterday with 67k miles. When I test drove the car, the highway was too congested to get the car above 50 mph. So, the car sounded fine to me and I purchased it with a free 90 day, 3k mile powertrain/engine/transmission warranty. The car should still be under its standard 7 year 70k mile warranty as well, right?
Fast forward to today. The highway was less congested and I was able to get the car up to 80 mph. However, I noticed a constant hum start at 60 mph, which became louder and more high pitch at 75 mph. I am taking this back to the Lexus dealership from where I purchased it to get the sound diagnosed and repaired. I'm hoping it's a problem still covered by the warranty, like the differential (does the ES350 have a differential since it's fwd) or pinion bearings. Could it be something simple, like a bad tire?
On my 2012 Santa Fe I'm getting a whining noise from the engine while it is park. I think it might be alternator.

Starting a few months back, I've noticed a low volume hum/whine coming from the engine compartment. I notice it more when I'm in drive, but also notice it to a lesser degree when in park and revving. In drive, the sound gets just a bit louder and higher pitch, until shifts, then lowers at low RPM, growing again as revs move up.
since it happens in park, I'm thinking it is engine related, not transmission? (I usually change oil around 4k, sometimes as high as 5k)...
Over the weekend I discovered that the rarely used front passenger's window makes a consistent, continuous, low-pitch grunting noise while being raised up. You know like the motor is about to give up. It hasn't slowed down compared to the driver's window.
View 1 RepliesRecently had my 105K maintenance done which was water pump and timing belt plus whatever other misc belts go with that. Had it done at an indepentdent shop. Since the job was done we have noticed a high pitched whine that increases in pitch with RPM or speed that we drive (literally sounds like a jet engine whine). I took it back to the independent shop and he suggested it was our transmission. I have noticed no difficulty when changing gears nor any engine warning lights. I contacted Honda and our vehicle was part of a transmission recall in 05 that was done already. Other sources have suggested that the whine could be the belt being too tight or the water pump. Shop supposedly used all honda parts. Should I take it back to him again and suggest that the belt is too tight? Take it to the dealer and see what they think?
View 11 RepliesOur 2008 Honda CR-V w/120k one owner, always dealer maintained, vehicle has recently started exhibiting a little high pitch whine coming from the engine area which increases when you rev the gas. I checked the transmission dipstick and the level is just below the bottom hole (owners manual says it should be between the bottom and top hole). Would this make the whine? By adding some fluid should it go away? Is it okay to use a fluid other than Honda's?
View 3 RepliesI'm getting an audible whine on starting up from the engine that continues low revs / speeds but disappears upwards of 30 mph or so.
It's only audible inside the car and not outside and is definitely not transmission as it still makes the noise when in P or N.
The car drives perfectly normally, no missing or other issues.
I have a '99 Chevy Lumina 3100 V6 with 54k miles. There is a loud, high-pitch buzzy whine that changes pitch with engine RPM/transmission speed. The whining noise is only evident while the car is accelerating (forward or reverse), and above 5 mph. I removed the serpentine belt and drove it briefly (500 feet) - the noise is still there without the belt. I figure it's safe to assume it's not the power steering pump, alternator, H20 pump, idler or belt tensioner. The transmission has had regular service, and shifts smoothly in all gears (fluid is clean and level is full). There is only a slight raspy "scraping" noise in park or neutral, which becomes almost undetectable when shifting to drive or reverse with the brake still applied.
View 1 RepliesI recently had to replace my drive belt on a 97' dodge grand caravan sport 3.3 engine. The belt shredded and this is how i knew i had to replace it. Since i replaced it i notice a whine type of noise that increases in pitch as the engine is accelerated. The other thing I've noticed is that all electrically related operations work better as it is accelerated. For example, the air blows harder, the wipers move faster, and the lights brighten. Now i honestly can't say that it didn't do this before i changed the belt. I wonder if a bearing is going out on a pulley. I have noticed the same behavior on my daughters 98 sable. Also note that i did get all of the pieces of the old belt out from the pulleys and i did spin each of them to make sure the were moving without any resistance.

This high frequency disturbance is audible with the engine off (eliminating the alternator as being the source). This is also present with the volume set to a minimum.
View 14 RepliesMy car is an 08 AWD 3.3 I am noticing the engine will do a slight rev up, down, up, down when cold almost daily when I leave work in the afternoons.
I removed the airbox and intake tubing, cleaned the throttle body with TB cleaner and mass air sensor with electronics cleaner. I also used about half of a bottle of seafoam in one of the vacuum lines to the engine, and the other half in the fuel tank. Also ran some Chevron fuel system cleaner in the fuel tank. Nothing seemed to make a difference. It still persists.
It's noticeable the most in neutral, you can watch the tach rev up from 800 rpm to about 1100 and back down repeatedly. If the car is in drive and the brake is lightly applied, it will want to move when its revving up.
Twice this week our 2009 SantaFe (3.3l) had a squeal from the engine upon cold startup. The first time it was very cold (-20C or so) and this was louder and longer than the second time (-10C or so). The squeal lasted only a few seconds and trailed off to nothing. Each time the heater controls were set on defrost (fyi). In order of likely suspects, I suspect one of the following:
-compressor engaging and causing sudden increase in resistance on the belt or compressor engagement clutch noisy
-idler pulley for some reason causing belt to slip at first, but don't suspect idler bearing as noise disappears right away
-belt slippage due to resistance somewhere else--e.g. water pump or alternator.
This may not happen when I take the vehicle in for its next scheduled maintenance as by then the weather will likely be warmer. This has 76000 km on the clock.
I've been experiencing ENGINE RPM FLUCTUATION on cold starts. I took it into the dealer and they found an update available for the ECU and reprogrammed the ECU.

So far it appears to have corrected the RPM Fluctuation on a cold start... I see TSB 10-FL-010 cover this but also suggests to replace the Throttle Position Sensor which wasn't done on my vehicle.
Having an issue with my 2007 Santa Fe 3.3L. When the engine is cold, been sitting for a few hours not when the temp outside is cold, it takes about 5 to 8 cranks before the engine will fire. I can then shut it off immediately and start it again and it will fire right up.
I currently have the P0464, P0463 and P2068 check engine error codes for the fuel level sensor units. I don't really know if these are directly related as I've had them for about 6 months and the starting issue has just shown up the last month or so. Plus, I would assume these should only be related to sending fuel level information to the fuel gauge. Either way, I'm still leaning toward a fuel delivery issue since it only has a hard time starting when the car has been sitting for a few hours. I don't know if maybe it's the fuel pump or a electrical component. If it's the fuel pump, I'd like to do that when I take care of the sending units so I don't have to go back in. I've tried turning the car to the 'on" position for about 10 seconds without starting it to see if I could get the pump to load the line, if that's the issue, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.
The battery is good. It tested 12.5v after sitting over night.
Over the last few months I've noticed that there was a small 'Jerk' from the car when pulling away at low revs. It seemed to happen around 1200 RPM/20 MPH put only when pulling away very gently. It has been getting worse in the past two weeks. The car needs a service and I was going to get the fault looked at when in for service. Last night the 'ESP OFF' and the 4WD fault indicator came on (4WD lamp flashing). Since the fault lamps have illuminated, the car has stopped 'Jerking'.
View 3 Replies07 Santa Fe 3.3 with 155k miles has lifter noise all the time. Much more pronounced in cold weather upon start up when the engine is cold. These miles are mostly highway and I change oil every 5-6k with Citgo synthetic blend. Is this just normal wear or could the engine be getting gummed up? I was thinking about treating the engine with some Marvel or Rislone but I really don't like putting solvents in my crankcase.
View 3 RepliesFinally got my Auto Santa Fe on the road after buying at Auction and changing engine. If you drive reasonably gears change quietly but it you rev over 2k revs before you get to 5th gear there is a screeching noise (like a belt slipping) from the gearbox region of the car. Once in 5th gear or in Neutral there is no screech. Have it booked in with a gearbox specialist next week but have a 300 mile trip on Friday. Is there anything obvious I could have a look at before then?
View 10 RepliesWhine that I am getting coming up from below the gear stick ,is certainly seems that it is a noisy bearing as noise stops when car does so I think it may be the bearing mounted in the rear of the casing/gearbox just in front of the rubber coupling but the dealer cant seem to find it in his parts list.
