Santa Fe (CM - 2007-12) :: Vinegar Smell At Start Up
Aug 1, 2012
Over the past few mornings when I get in my car and start her up, a really strong vinegar smell comes from the vents. What this is and what could be causing this?

View 11 RepliesI have a 2007 F 150. When I use the a/c there is a strong vinegar smell when I first start the truck and the passenger's floorboard is wet. No antifreeze, just water. And no problems during the winter months. It looks like the water is coming from the a/c hoses that come into the truck.
View 12 RepliesI have a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe with 83k on it. For some months now, I have always been smelling strong fuel scent in the cabin. I took it to the workshop and was told it's my fuel canister so i handed money to the Mechanic to buy one to replace it. He called back to tell me he cannot get one to but can work on it by blocking the pipes or lines. I am not that convinced because i know the canister is there for a purpose so if he goes ahead to block the pipe or whatever, then it means something else can go wrong in the interim; but I'm in a quandary now and want that fuel scent to stop.
View 1 RepliesI have year 2011 santa fe, while mileage after 7000km, i have problem in air-cond, when i returned to my car within 3 minute to 5 minutes and start engine i can smell some source of chemical smell from air-cond for 3 second, why ? if i started engine after an hour then there is no smell, why ?
View 5 RepliesI have been having a mildew smell when using AC. I purchased a foaming cleaner that is mean to be sprayed by inserting a small tube in the evaporator pan drain, but the design on my santa fe drain hose prevents the tube from making it to the core. It always gets jammed up at firewall because of a 90 deg bend. Is there a port on the housing that allows access to the core?
View 15 RepliesI have a 2007 Santa Fe. If I fill the tank to full, or close to full I will have a fuel smell in the car until the tank runs under 3/4. If I keep it under 3/4 I usally do not get the smell in the car.
The dealer could not figure it out and I still have this issue. It seems the smell is more in the front of the cabin then the rear. It just could seem that way since the smell is very strong. I have to park the car with the windows open.
There are no fuel leaks, no fuel on the ground, no drips, and the no spillage when I filled the tank.
Vehicle:
01 Santa Fe LX 2.7 AWD w/112k miles
Symptoms:
- Slow Start (when cranking takes 2 full seconds before it will turn over and you can hear the engine cranking slower, use to turn over right away)
- Very Strong Burning Rubber Smell
History:
Last January it got down to -20 here in Albuquerque and I would have to go to work at that time. About a week later (when it was still getting down to about 0) I was driving home from work when I smelled a slight smell of burning rubber. I thought it was the car in front of me. The next day I had the same thing. It continued for about a month till the temps rose a bit and then went away. I could never find the cause. I then went all spring, summer, and fall without any problems on my Santa Fe.
As the temps begun to drop over the past 6 weeks we started to smell the burning rubber again, at first only when I would start the car till it warmed up. About 2 weeks ago the car started cranking slower and would take longer to turn over and within the past week I can smell the burning rubber smell even when I had the engine at temp. There's not any idiot lights on. The car is running fine except for what was mentioned, gets up to temp and stays there (a little below the middle on the gauge like normal). I pop the hood and looked at the belt, looked good (no cracks). Checked all the fluids and the only thing that's low is the coolant.
My mother-in-law moved my car and put the emergency brake on (2010 Santa Fe) when she got out. When I got into drive home, I drove about 10miles with it engaged (for some reason the light didn't indicate it was on). When I got home I noticed a burnt rubber smell from the left rear tire. (no smoke though)
Our driveaway is an incline. After engaging/disengaging the e-brake, the light started coming back on again. If I put the car in neutral and release the regular brakes, it will quickly roll back. If I put the e-brake on in netural and disengage the regular brake, it still holds fine on the hill.
I know the damage can vary, but any test or check I can do to determine the amount of damage?
Curious if this could be a normal thing from it sitting for 6 months... I have a 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse.
Took the battery out for the Winter. Just started the car today only ran it for about 2 min when I went to close the hood after shutting it off I could smell a faint burning smell the smell resembled a burning rubber smell it was not strong but I also didnt run the car for long.
I amworried now to drive it or start it as I dont wanna cause harm what to do? I looked best I could and all the wires look fine.. no signs of chewing or anything.
Do you think its safe for me to start it and maybe just let it Idle and see if the smell fades? Im worried about it catching fire.
I notice a bad smell when I start my 2011 ES350for a short period of time. After that it is fine. Auto has just over 10,000 miles on it. E mail from dealer tells me filter needs changing. Somehow I believe there is more to it.
View 14 RepliesI have a 2010 Santa fe that will sometimes not start when using the key. The starter turns just fine but the engine won't fire up. However, with the remote starter it will always start.
The vehicle is under warranty for a few more weeks but the mechanic couldn't diagnose anything because it started just fine in the shop.
I am having this giant problem with my 2008 Santa Fe. The battery died and I replaced it and I think that the security system is locking out from starting the car. Step by step of what happened:
1. Connected battery terminals
2. Horn goes off (continuously not beeping)
3. Try and start the car but it does not start. Doesn't turn over nothing at all but the interior and dash lights do work but it does not let me unlock the doors using the button (not sure if that means anything).
4. Pull horn fuse because it's waking up my neighbors.
At this point the car has been sitting for about two weeks, the battery is not connected and I'm really stuck. I've tried connecting the battery, locking the doors and letting it sit for 45 seconds and that didn't work. I replaced the battery in the key fob and that did nothing. My last step was to reach out here and honestly next would be to tow it to the dealer.
Last Saturday and today, I drove the car to run some errands. When hot, I turned it off for 5 to 10 minutes. Then it wouldn't start, the starter was cranking strong but the engine didn't start. I tried for 15 minutes with the same result.
Then, I waited for the engine to cool for an hour, it started fine. Both times the temperature outside was around -25 Celsius.
The dealer says he can't do anything if can't replicate the problem. The car is Santa Fe V6 FWD 2011 with 44 000 km.
As appear on the attached video , sometimes the ESP off and ABS lights again at Engine start , and after the switch on checkup. Is that normal , or indicate upcoming issue?

It has only happened 2 times so far. I understand it's normal when it's really cold outside. But it's still warm here. I booked an appointment with dealer next week but I want to knowledge myself before going. Can this be battery? Or starter? I remember there's a common problem on my model that a oil leak will damage the starter. Will that cause this symptom?
View 11 RepliesI just bought a used 2007 Hondai santa fe. 65K. Loved it until four times when I turn key to start the car 'stumbles'. Dealer finds nothing wrong. What I notice today is I did not have my foot on the brake. My 11 yr old Subaru started w/o (not good I know) so I developed a bad habit. So now I wonder if this is not a problem but rather a safety feature and I need to always have my foot on the brake at start.
View 2 RepliesWhen its under ca -5degrece my oil lamp lighten up ca 8 sek. My oil pressure at warm motor is 3.3 bar, what is wrong...
View 2 Replies2007 Santa Fe, hard to start after fueling up, after that one time it cranks fine until I fuel up again.
View 1 RepliesSo for the last few weeks our 2007 3.3L V6 GL is having trouble starting (extended crank). Sometimes it's fine, but other times the engine just turns, so it takes 2 or 3 tries to get it to start.
Initially this seems like a fuel filter issue to me, but these fuel filters are "unserviceable", which I believe means they shouldn't ever have to be replaced (right?). I just had a servicing done at Midas, and they weren't able to tell me what the problem was.
The vehicle has 94k kms (58k miles) on it.
The 2012 SF I bought last weekend has a sticker on the radiator brace near the left head light stating the vehicle has a remote start function and there is a blue button with a key symbol on the fob that (I think) is supposed to make it work, but I have yet to get the remote start to operate. What's the secret? Is there a selection in the ECU that enables/disables it? Do I need to cross my eyes when I push the button? This would be great to have on cold or hot mornings - if I can get it to work.
View 4 RepliesLike the title says, the engine turns over but it doesn't start. Sequence is something like this:
Turn key to on.
Wait until all the lights and gongs have stopped.
Turn to start for 3 to 4 seconds.
No start.
Turn everything off and repeat 1 to 3 times.
It starts.
