When I go over bumps or rough surfaces I hear a rattle in the rear suspension. It sounds similar to the noise bad ball joints make. I recently had the car aligned and the shop said they couldn't find anything wrong. I'm going to take a look myself but was wondering if this might be a common problem. If maybe there are certain bushing that are known to wear out.
View 2 RepliesI own a 2009 Santa Fe Limited AWD with 56,000 miles on it. I purchased it new in July of 2009. I have started to hear a severe clunk in the front end when driving over rough surfaces/potholes. Not when turning the steering wheel. I have read about issues with front stabilizer link bushing. The Santa Fe is at the dealers and they said it is the front control arm bushings. $1000 to repair!
View 41 RepliesI have owned my 2011 CPO rx for a bit over two months now. It has 19 inch rims and Michelin tires. I find the suspension to be much harder than I would have expected on rough surfaces. For example, when I drive over even medium expansion joints the suspension is somewhat jarring. The fact that the suspension doesn't absorb more of the road surprises me. My wife drives a 2011 MDX and that is much better over similar roads. I always thought that Lexus had more of a reputation for a plusher ride. Could it be the shocks already? The car only has 33,000 miles.
View 11 RepliesJust noticed a rattle above my head when temp drops below 60, only on certain rough, washboard surfaces. I am running 44/42 PSI, so I know what I am getting into. I have no intention to fix the rattle other than cranking up the radio. I know when cars age, they eventually develop more rattles. Question is, when left alone, do rattles do any long term harm? As in loosing something else and create a new rattle, or get worse.
View 2 RepliesI have an annoying rattle the occurs on rough road surfaces. It comes from the front right wheel area but goes away instantly with light brake pedal pressure. Three trips to the shop have not identified the problem. I just read somewhere that there are "anti-rattle clips" or springs on the brake calipers. Is this right and are these the same as the retaining springs/clips that can be seen from the outside through the slots in the alloys wheels?
View 5 RepliesI have coilovers on my R32 with adjustable control arms and have been noticing a "thud" type of noise when going over uneven surfaces which appears to be coming from the rear.
I actually periodically noticed this noise when I first got the PSS's put on my car when going over larger bumps/dips in the road but lately it is becoming much more pronounced - occurring over uneven surfaces like parking ramps or driving over crappy roads. Over smooth surfaces, no problem.
Thought it was my rear sway bar bushings since they were making a really bad creaking noise, got those replaced and still noticing this damn noise.
Well a picture says a thousand words so that plastic cover?/roof tonneau?/whatever is rattling when the top is up. Its a bit annoying when everything else in the cabin is tomb quiet so im going to try to remedy it tomorrow with some adhesive silicone. The same stuff that prevented leaks into my trunk will now be used to stop rattles (I hope).

View 14 RepliesMy rear bushings on my 1997, A4 Audi, make a crunching thumping sounds when the body torques over irregular surfaces. My Audi mechanic says that it is the bushings. Replacing the A frames and bushings will cost more than half the car's worth. I belief that dust got into the bushings when I went on dirt roads in Death Valley or they are just worn. When I blast the bushings with water the noise disappears or dampens for a while. Car has 186,000 miles.To keep the noise down, can I add graphite or some other material to the bushings?
View 4 RepliesI have a 2012 Santa fe SE that with 22k miles on it. I have developed an annoying rattle in the back driver side door. I have gone around all of the doors with a screwdriver and tightened up everything but this rattle persists when driving on moderately rough roads. As odd as it seems I believe it also occurs more frequently on smooth roads when going around a left curve.
View 10 RepliesI have a 2011 SF 2.4L FWD GLS with 79k miles. I replaced the OE struts and shocks 3 weeks ago with Monroe OE Spectrum struts and shocks. This improved the ride tremendously especially on the front passenger side where the strut was leaking.
After driving it for 3 weeks I still feel a little rattle or clunk when driving over ruff roads at slow speeds. I did check the ball joint and wheel bearings while I was in there, and I am certain they are not the source of the noise. I also checked the strut mount when I transferred it to the new strut, and while it appeared and felt ok I think it is the most likely cause of the remaining rattle and clunk.
Any aftermarket strut mounts for this particular model year? I have looked at RockAuto and they have a Moog Part # HYSB9816. This part claims it is for the European builds. Is there really a difference for this particular part?
My 2009 Elantra has a rattle in the right rear that I can't figure out. I read through the other thread that finally pointed to bad shocks.
1. I removed the shock and drove around- rattle continues.
2. I removed the sway bar link.- rattle continues
3. Checked caliper, seems fine
4. Wife drove me around while I was in trunk. The rattle is definitely coming from suspension.
5. Most rattling happens over very small road irregularities, not big bumps.
6. Rattling happens on or off the brakes.
7. Rattling is definitely a metallic sound.
This previous weekend, my buddies and I finally got my FK coilovers installed on my GTI. I have heard that people say there is a little bit of rattling upon them getting properly seated. Well it has been 4 days of driving and now sounds like the rattling has gotten worse! I took it into a local suspension shop and they couldn't put a thumb on it. We in-turn found out that my rear hub bearing was going out and has since been replace. Having issues with coilovers? I have contacted the company that I purchased them through already and am awaiting feedback from them.

I have a 2009 Subaru Outback with 60K miles and this problem has been present since I purchased with 30K miles. When turning left or right over uneven surfaces (like washboard dirt road, potholes, or strips of Botts' dots in a parking garage) there is a loud, audible rattle coming from the front end. It sounds like to metal pipes hitting together. The noise does not happen when driving straight.
Subaru and another garage have inspected. Front struts and sway bar links have been replaced with no effect. CV joints, ball joints have all been inspected with no issues found.
I read on a forum that it may have something to do with the power steering fluid, that when turning there is uneven pressure on both sides and it results in the noise. Possible at the steering column universal joint.
I assume since it only happens to some Subarus that replacing the correct parts will resolve the issue.
My LS460 recently developed a rattle from the front drivers side. It's triggered more by rumbles/vibrations from an uneven surface rather than speed bumps or large pot holes.
It sounds a bit like a washer vibrating on a metal tray (for what that's worth)!
Interestingly though it gets a LOT worse when the car is in 'Comfort' suspension mode, and is nowhere near as bad in 'Sports' mode. So it seems that having the suspension higher gives this thing more room to rattle.
I noticed in the service history that the front passenger air strut was replaced 30k ago, so I'm worrying that there is a large bill on the horizon.
I had a eureka moment the other day when braking over a rough surface and I think I've worked out why the Prius (and other hybrids) feels like it skips more than other cars when braking on a rough surface. It only occurs on light braking, i.e. when on regen, it's because the rear brakes are not engaged. A normal car would have all 4 wheels braking so if the fronts let go momentarily the rears hold the car steady.
View 19 RepliesWhen I drive over quick choppy bumps in pavement I get a rattle in the rear of the suspension, but only when the bump is on one side. When the bump is long and activates both rear wheels, like a speed bump or a large road crack I don't get the rattle.
The sound seems to be worse on the right side and I can't really figure it out. Anything specific I should look out for?
I have 2010 LS460L with 76K miles and I hear rattle noise in from driver and passenger side. I took it to the Lexus service center and they said it's the air suspension problem and need to replace this part and would cost about $2K per suspension.
My question is is there anyway I could convert this air suspension to standard coil or gas shocks from Air suspension??
I will be using this for a Limo in NYC and the road conditions are terrible and air suspension is not going to last that long and they are expensive.
I am after a annoying dash noise that I get when driving over any rough surfaces. I have removed all centre console and glove box and everything else around that area and I still have the noise, its like the dash is loose some where else, I have looked around for a complete dash removal instruction thread, but can not find anything??
It looks like I will have to remove the whole dash but really could do with some instructions on how to do this as I don't want to break anything!
2004 Santa Fe, 2.4L auto, 133k miles that I just purchased. I've just been getting all of the maintenance up to par before driving it, I noticed the suspension makes a decent amount of noise when going over any kind of bump. The rear end makes a squeaking noise, which I think is from the trailing arm bushings. The trailing arms look like this:
When looking at the bracket where the big bushings goes, it looks like the arm is almost touching the one side instead of being centered like it should be. I'm thinking the bushing is just shot and allowed the arm to be pulled rearward. I know 01-03 had a recall for rusting trailing arms, but that doesn't work with my 04.
Other various creaking noises I'm thinking are coming from the sway bar bushings and links. Control arm bushings still look solid. Might replace the rear shocks if I have to with some KYB's.
Rear end Suspension noise, '13 Santa Fe Sport 2.0T? I purchased a new '13 Santa Fe Sport 2.0T in Sept. 2013. Shortly after I noticed the rear end of the car creaks/squeaks when the suspension compresses thru it's travel. This happens when driving over tall speed bumps at 2-3mph or into/out of steep driveways at 2-3mph. Rear end noise/squeak at anytime?
