I was driving down the highway when I had this loud bang and twang, after inspecting the car I realized it was the left rear seat belt that was broken. The seat belt fails to retract and cannot be pulled. I'm guessing the retractor is the fault.

I was driving last winter when something bad happened. I was on the highway in 4H doing about 45mph (Really bad weather). Suddenly there was a loud bang, like a shotgun going off. The truck continued to run but it sounded like someone was beating my driveshaft with a metal pipe. There is no apparent damage but it grinds and bangs when it drives. The engine runs just fine. I limped it back home with the noises being constant only when its moving.
I have a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Classic with 214,000 miles on it. Ok......this hasn't happen too often, but scares the CRAP outta me when it does.The other day, it happened twice. Traveling on the highway, 65 - 70 MPH, the car suddenly jolts with a loud BANG!I've had the transmission fluid flushed.Each time I go in for service at my local garage, I have them check ALL the fluids. They never find anything. And are at a loss as to what it could be. They've dropped the pan and found nothing wrong with the transmission. No metal in the fluid. They've check the rear diff. Still nothing. I've gone about a year without the issue until this past Monday when it happened twice. I'm a little paranoid to go faster than 60 - 65 right now.
View 15 RepliesI am using a Hyundai Santa Fe (Petrol, 2011 Model) here in Saudi Arabia. On July 17 (11:30 pm), I was driving in a highway at about 80-90 kms/hr when suddenly my vehicle lost power (steering wheel, brake, etc).
Baed on the diagnosis of our company mechanic, it was an alternator problem. He said the alternator bearing got stuck up.
Prior to this incident, on July 7, the same vehicle got stalled twice while it's parked. In the first case, I was able to use it after jumpstarting. In the second case in the same day (4 hours after the first case), jump starting didn't work so they have to replace it with a temporary used battery. I noticed that I had a hard start (the engine responds only after 3-4 key ignition). After replacing the battery with new one, I was able to drive normally from July 9 to Jul 17, and then the incident happened as I described in the first paragraph.
Question: Is there a way to detect the alternator bearing problem before it actually breaks down? If there is, what procedure or predictive test is normally followed to identify potential problems in an alternator?
While driving on a flat road last night my prius felt like it hit something - the car looks fine and no warning lights came. It felt like I hit a massive pothole and then nothing.

View 1 RepliesI need to know if this is considered "normal" behavior of the transmission. This cold morning while driving in traffic the car just jerked really hard while shifting from 3rd to 2nd and as described in other threads its like someone rear ended the car.
It has only 2650 km, it's a 2012 2.4 6sp automatic 4wd Santa Fe, should I waste my time going to the dealer? It only happened once, no engine light no nothing. Could it be just a "glitch" in the ECM? I read some other threads before posting, but they were a bit older. Has experienced such a shifting bang under low speed with so little mileage?
My 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe as reached 40 MPH. While driving, after slowing down then giving the car gas, it would make a very loud thud and I would be jolted forward. At times it sounded like the transmission was going to be left on the roadway. Is it common problem?
View 2 RepliesMy T-reg had Toyo Proxy tires on it when I bought it. They are quite loud when driving on the highway. VW has said that there is nothing wrong with the CV joint, so we are thinking it must be the tires. A couple of tire places have mentioned that while the Proxy is a good tire, it is not a tire to have on this car. We really want to replace them but don't want to spend $800+ on a good tire to have the same results. What tires are others driving using without getting the woo-woo-woo sound on the road?

I am having a very intermittent thump/bang/slip in my front end when coming off the highway or taking off at a stop. Believe it or not this is when i drive the car perfectly normal and don't stomp on it which I haven't done much with this car.
I was under the car the other day and noticed neither the dogbone mount bolts looked to have been replaced and i saw the back subframe bolts look to be moving around due to rubbing marks on the subframe.
Car has been in three times to seacoast volkswagen this last time the tech drove with me and they wont do anything because they cant replicate the problem.
I noticed its between 4 to 3rd down shift and 1st to 2nd up shift that it happens so far. It is LOUD and extremely noticeable and feels almost like a slip and heavy bang.
My daughter was driving our 3.5L Santa Fe on the highway when it decelerated. Stepping on gas and no acceleration. She said she got a CEL and oil light. She was able to pull over to the side of highway and turned ignition off and on and she was able to drive off the highway and called me. She was about 120 miles from home. She said the cel light and check oil light were now off and I had here check the oil and it was at full.
I had her drive in the right hand lane without going over 60 and she made it home no problem. I took it out for a drive and no issues. Do you think this is a crankshaft position sensor problem?
mileage is 170k - timing belt was replaced at 130k.
I notice that recently my Santa Fe does not run over 3.000 RPM in highway. Motor goes to close 3.000 RPM but does not shift to next speed and it feels as a lack of power, especially when uphill. Stopping, turning engine off and then on again seams to solve this problem, everything runs ok but suddenly the problem appears again.
My Hyundai is a 2007 New Santa Fe CRDI 2.2 (Diesel engine), automatic.
I have a 2003 GMC Yukon XL 1500 4 WD. Ive been getting a loud bang ( like a hammer strike on the front frame) on occasion only after backing up and it happens after the truck moves forward a bit. You can almost feel the truck loading up and then it gives with a loud hammer like bang. Ive had a tech check the front end and do an alignment. I had thought it might be a brake hanging up.

View 2 RepliesI was driving home on the highway doing about 60 mph in rush hour traffic the other night when it completely stalled out. When I started the car as I left work I noticed the engine noise was louder than normal but was in a hurry to get home. I was driving and noticed a change in the way the car was riding almost like a hiccup. I pressed the gas pedal to the floor and the car continued to decrease speed. I jumped off the highway on the next exit and the car slowed as I pulled on the shoulder and stopped.
As I stopped and put the car into park the battery, oil and check engine light came on. My headlights were still on as was the radio but the car would not restart. It was dark, raining and about 35 degrees outside. The local highway assistance showed up about 20 minutes later and gave me a battery jump. The jump lasted for about one mile down the road again and then died. The motorist assistance employee said that my belts were not turning so he thought it was my alternator.
My car was towed and kept in the shop for 3 days, no error codes, started right up and no problem they can find with alternator, tensioner, belts, or battery. The week prior I had my entire fuel system replaced as my gas gauge had stopped reading. The shop checked my fuel pump and did not find any errors. I don't know what else to look at and the shop is out of options...they have driven it repeatedly and cannot find anything. I have read on many threads about the crankshaft position sensor. Could this be the issue?
I have a 2002 bettle with about 150k on it. was running fine and one day while the wife was driving it she heard a loud pop/bang and it started missing and has low power. Starts fine just dosent have much power and is missing on one cylinder.

If I ease on the brakes ,no problem but if I hit the pedal there is a loud bang or clunk from underneath,sometimes front and sometimes in the back. It's as if the wheels stopped but the chassis went forward and back slightly. As long as I put the brakes on gradually there is no problem stopping.
When I come off the Interstate and leave the off ramp, the low side of the front end sounds as if there is no shock absorber ,doesn't matter which side is low,they both do it on the low side.
Intermittent problems.
Steering wheel turns and grinding,groaning noises from under the hood, not all the time.
Going over a speed bump in a parking lot causes the same noise I get exiting the Interstate.

View 9 RepliesMy phaeton's gearbox has progressively gotten worse.. When gearing down after accelerating I am regularly getting a very loud and aggressive bang rather than a smooth gear change, I believe the torque converter is on its way out or the transmission fluid is low.
What transmission fluid I should have in the Phaeton is it the 75w90? I want to try and top up the transmission fluid rather than getting the gearbox serviced as the waiting list in Dortsmund is too long and there is nobody nearby that I am aware of.
