I turned off the engine and I get a whirring sound, quite loud, that seems to be coming from the top of the engine around where the injectors are.
View 51 RepliesI have a UK 2006 Mk2 CDX+ which I was driving last night - seemed ok, got to our driveway, turned the steering wheel fully left so I could manoeuvre the car into the driveway when I heard a loud "clunk" noise.
I thought I ran over a bottle or something so carried on reversing, when I got out I noticed the car was parked diagonally! Thought this is strange, I don't park like that and tried again, a bit better but still not parallel! I then noticed the steering wheel was hard to turn, a grinding like noise is heard when I turned so I decided I would need to take into the local in the morning.
Started the car today and drove out and got immediate sensation that steering was not connected to the wheels, the SW was off centre by miles and turning left/right was very sluggish. Lucky the garage is only down the road (but it's not Hyundai specialist) from me as I would not risk driving it down main roads in this condition. Guy at garage asked me to fully turn the SW left to right and we can see that the front of the car actually moved during the process. He is going to take it up on the lift to look underneath.
2007 GX470 120,000 miles. Great vehicle and no problems until now. Seems I have an intermittent engine whine/whirring/zinging sound. I say intermittent because sometimes it there and other times its gone. It is fairly loud. Almost like an extremely loud alternator whine, only this sound is coming from the area near the ac compressor. There is some plumbing which runs just along the left side of the compressor pump and when I grab those lines and the little aluminum cannister in that area, I can feel the vibration in that system, big time. No vibration from the compressor pump though. Not sure what those lines are, but whatever they connect to is probably the culprit.
Its odd because the noise comes and goes. It doesn't fade in/out. It's either full blast loud, or totally gone. Once it's gone, it doesn't come back for a few days. Then one morning i go out and start the truck, and there it is again! Usually lasts for about a day, then it goes away for a week or so. After a week goes by, there it is again! Really odd. I had my mechanic look at it, but it wasn't making any noise that day (as luck would have it). He told me it was an awesome vehicle. Of course I agreed, but that didn't diagnose the problem.
If you push the remote lock button twice the horn beep is very load and startling. Can this be programed for a lower volume sound?
View 5 RepliesOdd, relatively loud "whoosh" noise when they turn off the engine? It sounds pneumatic in nature, like a pump or servo of some sort sealing or depressurizing? I should note that I park in a garage, which may amplify it. Definitely more noticeable if you open the driver door or window then kill the ignition.
Second, I don't know if it's the cold, a bad batch of gas, or just normal but the motor seems to make a clack clack clack noise when stopped/at idle. It's not consistent and doesn't seem to affect drivability. I just hope it's not knock or slap, i.e., indicative of serious issues. Am I just being paranoid and overly sensitive?
I just installed new brake pads in my 2WD 2009 Santa Fe. I bought the cheapest AutoZone pads. Now I have a loud squeal sound when I apply the brakes. If I apply a hard brake the squeal goes away. Until I apply the brakes again. Now, after install...I have been researching and noticed that the stock pads are ceramic. I did apply (Not once but twice) break grease on the pads. What the problem might be? Oh yeah, I did see that after 2007, oiling the caliper springs is required and might be the problem too. But I do not know where the spring in question is and how to oil it.
View 4 RepliesMy wife was driving our 2 young kids on the highway and the accelerator was making a loud clacking noise and then there was no response when pressing the accelerator. She managed to get to the shoulder. Mechanic says the engine is totally cooked (long block replacement). Only 32K miles and all scheduled maintenance done.
View 7 RepliesMy 2004 Santy 3.5L (I am the original owner) just turned 91.4K miles and all of a sudden a VERY LOUD Engine Knocking sound came from the top of the engine. I have been changing my own oil since new with synthetic Mobil 1 and a new filter every time, and I never had any issues. I changed it last week at 90K prior a Spring Break trip (1350 miles).
Then yesterday after I let her rest for 1 day, I took the kids to school and within 10 miles of my house the ticking HARD loud noise started happening. I pulled over near a shop (within 1 block of where the noise started) and they said...don't drive it it sounds like a lifter collapsed, or a rod bearing or something big...
I had her towed to the dealer and the first thing they told me is to gather all the oil change receipts and a "manifesto" and they asked me how often I change the oil... I said every 5K miles. I change my own oil and have done since day 1.
BTW, Timing Belt, Water Pump, tensioners, belts, coolant, spark plugs and coils were changed last year at 77K miles.
The car should still be covered under the 10year/100K Powertrain and I believe they are trying to build a case so Hyundai can cover this or not...
They still need to tell me what's wrong... I change my own oil so I don't have receipts for "oil changes" and I have a log of when oil was changed...
Transmission comes out of gear and has a loud whirring sound when in reverse, but not every time. it has happened when driving at about 60 mph (twice) Sometimes it happens a couple times in a row sometimes it is ok for a couple weeks.
View 2 RepliesI bought this used Camry 2010 LE 4 Cylinder with 38k miles on it. Right now I have 42k miles on it.
The issue I have is whenever I turn off the engine and then turn it on. The moment I put it on drive and accelerate I hear a clapping sound. It sounds like clap noise when I just turn on the engine and accelerate. It only makes that noise when i start the engine and accelerate and after that the sound is gone
When I leave the car overnight, and drive it the next morning. The sound is louder with a clap sound right after i accelerate. It happens every time i turn off the engine and turn on and drive but it doesn't sound as loud when i leave it for overnight. It still makes the sound but not as loud.
Sometimes you feel it clap on your foot when you accelerate.
I am getting a loud knocking noise from the engine on my Santa Fe. The car is very low mileage of around 51K and has regular service and oil change.
Not sure what has caused this but there is a loud tapping/knocking noise coming from the engine. Have got it locally checked with the garage and Hyundai Workshop also but both have suggested that Oil levels are appropriate and they need to open engine to investigate more.
At a higher RPM the sound becomes more loud and recognizable.
I have a 2013 Santa Fe, 2.2 Diesel AWD and have recently experienced this popping sound. The sound is normally noticed within seconds of switch off the engine and is loud enough to make people jump with surprise. When I originally complained I was told this was normal ... nonsense I said as having owned vehicles from various manufacturers(Nissan, SAAB, Renault, VW, Chrysler, Mazda, Lexus) over the last 25year I've never experienced anything like this. Car is back in for a 90K klm service and repeated my complaint - lets see what happens. To me this is coming from the catalytic converter and when I look at the box underneath the car it has numerous bump/dents on it yet has never been offroad.
View 2 RepliesI'm having an issues with my Santa Fe MY07 - Basically I was driving down the dual carriage way last week when suddenly the oil light came on and with the 500m it took me to stop a loud tapping noise was coming from the engine as it seized - The break down people came out to the car as they were inspecting it they informed me that the Sump cap was missing - the car is under warranty - however Hyundai as say that because the cannot find out why the sump cap had came off (and that in there mind they cannot give any reason why it should of) it is there for NOT a manufacturing issue and that they would not cover the repairs under warranty...

My wife was driving along and she said she heard a loud 'thunk' and then she couldn't accelerate and the engine light came on. I don't know if she had to restart it or what but she finished out her day and made it home ok. The engine light went off. When she got home I put the scanner on it. I have a Actron 9580A. It came up with 3 codes.

From what I've read on here and what the codes tell me I guess I need a throttle position sensor and that a computer update is needed. Is the ECM update something that can be done without taking it in? If I do need someone to update it is the dealer the best place? Can I install the TPS then drive there? Or does it have to be done at the same time? I was just thinking I might save a few bucks doing it myself.
Prior to this the Santa Fe had no codes. I do need to replace the battery which tested bad last month. I think the battery will need to be replaced before doing the update.
Trying to find any information on what's happening with my 2008 2.2 Diesel Santa Fe ... Been driving fine until I pulled up at a set of traffic lights yesterday and started hearing a loud rattle- knocking coming from the engine at idle.
Put it in gear and drove and it goes away. When at idle if you rev the car it goes away.
Mechanic seems to think it could be clutch as it vibrates the gearbox, but sound seems to be more prominent around the engine, my thoughts were maybe a loose timing tensioner.
Clutch replacement is very expensive.
I own a 2011 santa fe with approx 49,500 miles. in the past few weeks i have begun hearing a "whirring" (or more like a 'zzzzzzzzzz') noise when turning the steering wheel. I've taken it in to the dealership who tells me this noise is "normal".
This was hard for me to believe since it just started occurring in the past few weeks. I checked P/S fluid before taking to dealership and all was okay. also no leaks seen on garage floor.

I have an 1990 Toyota 4Runner. V6 engine. Automatic. 4wd. Today it blew an upper radiator hose. A few seconds after the initial pop of the hose and the spew of fluids the vehicle died. I replaced the upper radiator hose and the lower hose- and refilled the antifreeze. There are no leaks as of right now.
The engine will not start. The belts spin whenever the key is turned on. But the engine will not crank. You can hear the starter trying to start it up. Jumping the vehicle was of no luck. Charging the battery was of no dice.
The vehicle makes a whirring noise (belts spinning) when key is turned, but the engine does not crank at all. The noise stops as soon as you shut the key off. The oil is clean and full still.
I was driving out of a parking lot and as I accelerated onto the main road my vehicle stopped. I heard a grinding sound and could not go forward or reverse. While the car is in drive, park or reverse my car will roll any which way. It pushed it across the street. I tried to locate my tranny dipstick via visual inspection and manual. I could not find it. Could the stick have never been put back at some point in service and caused this issue. That seems unlikely but the thought occurred. Could it be the velocity joint? Whatever it is it certainly sounds like a transmission issue.

My dad and I have done the regular maintenance on it so far but this weekend after a 3 hour drive, I turned the car back on and a loud whirring/humming/whining noise was coming from the engine. It gets slightly louder with acceleration, but I can barely hear it once I've picked up speed (but it's still there.) It still happens when I am in neutral. It sounds like it is coming from the passenger side of the engine. Close to the power steering pump area, but the power steering fluid is full (although it is a very dark/black color and has a slight smell...not sure if this is normal.) I'm not having any trouble or hesitation while steering. The rack is operating smoothly and it is not leaking. I plan on taking it into the shop but wanted to go in educated.

Problem has been any diagnosis of the cause because the mechanics cannot agree. One has said top end and another bottom end. If it is top end when I think the consensus would be to get the present engine rebuilt. However, if bottom end then, because of the increased cost, the better option might be to replace with a reconditioned engine.
I have a 2011 Santa Fe 3.5L with about 108,000 kms (roughly 65,000 miles) that seems to have produced a bit of a whining sound from the engine. It will do it in park, or in gear, and the sound seems to increase slightly with an increase in RPMs.
