What could it be? Replace front brakes. Then they said it was front axels, replaced them. Making same noise... grinding and feels like you are hitting brakes when you are not. Sounds like metal on metal. What else can it be? 01 sante fe 180,000 miles v6 awd. It was doing it in reverse but after all of this now just in drive at slow speeds.
View 3 RepliesI have a 2005 Santa Fe 2.7L engine. Right now it seems to be making a funny grinding noise in the passenger side. It's driving and shifting fine. Wheels seem to be ok. Once it cooled down the noise seemed to go away.
View 4 RepliesI own a 2.7 L v6 Santa Fe, 2004 with almost 50k miles on it.
When I accelerate and hit approximately 1.9k RPM I can hear a light grinding noise underneath the car. This happens both in 2nd and 3rd gear. So as it's accelerating up I can hear it, and when the car shifts up and the RPMs drop it will make the noise again as it passes through the same RPM range.
The noise is always there at 1.9k to approx 2.1k RPMs.
Also of note is that the sound is either gone or significantly reduced after driving around for a while. I don't notice it after freeway driving, for example.
Codes currently on ecm: P0134, P2125, P1174, P0735 My 2003 Santa Fe 2wd 3.5l with 160,000 miles was driving fine, then all the sudden whenever I reach about 3500 rpms there's a grinding noise that sounds like its coming from near or in the automatic transmission. As for the codes: P0134- I just replaced the o2 sensor with an oem part from autozone, so not sure why that's popping up. The connections look fine. P2125 and P1174- I'm trying to figure out whether the accelerator position sensor or throttle position sensor needs to be replaced. I have a multimeter but don't know if that will be able to tell me which one is out. The P0735 gear 5 incorrect ratio and grinding noise at 3500 rpms is what I am mostly worried about though. Could a transmission flush work with that?
View 2 RepliesI have a 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe v6. I've had problems with the air conditioning in that it blows hot. Paid around 900 bucks to have a new compressor installed because the mechanic said that would fix it but it didn't. That was about 8 months ago. Still blowing strong but no cold air. About two weeks ago I took the car to a different mechanic who told me it needs a new compressor which would be 900 bucks. I declined that but had the guy do a little work on the breaks. He put new rotors and pads on the front brakes two weeks ago. Now within the past couple days when I start the car up it makes an extremely loud nasty grinding type of sound for a couple seconds then stops. Oil is fine and new. It happened this morning long enough for me to look under the hood and see the fans looked like they were fine, and the loud grinding noise seems to be coming from behind the glove box. It hasn't broke down on me yet, it's just really obnoxious and embarrassing with all the noise every morning.

It's the lock actuator for the rear hatch.
Sometimes it works.
Sometimes it doesn't.
Sometimes it makes that horrible plastic grinding noise.
My girlfriend has a 2005 Sante Fe 2.7L v6 AWD. Lately I've been noticing it more and more but when the car is driven for a good amount of time we hear a noise. I'd say maybe an hour or so (I've never measured it though) the car makes a whining noise when trying to turn the wheel or even accelerating. I feel some resistance in the wheel when it happens too but majority of the noise comes from turning the wheel. Also when this happens the car seems to want to pull to the right, i can feel the wheel starting to pull. If I let the car rest and cool down for like 20 minutes or so it will go away but then slowly come back. From what Ive been reading I think I can narrow this down to a power steering fluid issue, either its low, leaking or the screen in the bottle is clogged. I don't see any leaks, nothing pouring out the bottom of the car either.
View 11 RepliesMy daughter's 2004 Santa Fe (2.4L standard transmission) is making strange noises on start up which I think is due to a power steering issue as the noise is greater when she turns the wheel while stationary or when driving for the first 5 minutes or so until it warms up.
She came over tonight I she is about an 1 to 1.5" below the MINIMUM line on the Power Steering Reservoir.
Is there any special or proprietary Power Steering Fluid I need to be buying or what should I be buying to top this up?
I know there has been much discussion on using only Hyundai automatic transmission fluid over the years, but in this case it's for the power steering?
Last summer my 04 SantaFe (140,000 mi, automatic) would feel like it was sticking and bumping when backing out of a parking space, then after shifting into Drive it would jerk and then make a huge thunking noise when applying the gas pedal. However, this would only happen sometimes, not all the time, and was not dependent upon the weather, surface, whether it had just been driven or not, etc. It would just happen when it happened. I brought it to the Hyundai garage and they replaced an axle and sensor. I continued having the same problem, brought it back to the garage and they replaced the viscous coupler.
I continued to experience the same problem after that, brought it back to the garage and they had the car for 10 days. I was told they had to get a mechanic in who was familiar working on 04 Santa Fe's and they determined the axle they replaced was bad, so they put in a new one. Everything ran great until I brought the car in early February for an "off balance ceiling fan" noise when accelerating. I brought the car to the Hyundai garage again and had the transfer case replaced.
Now the "clunking/grinding" is back when moving from R to D!!! So I brought it back to the garage again Monday and they said they cannot find anything wrong, and they are convinced it's just a symptom of the age and mileage of the car. However, it happened again today, but worse than ever before. This time it felt like it might not even move from R to D, and then it continued the grinding and bumping after accelerating and then the car felt "sluggish". I am convinced something is really wrong, although they assured me at the garage that the transmission is good, the axle, sensor and boot are all good etc. What else could it be?
I have a 2008 Sante Fe with 165K mileage. At times, not regular, when restarting the car we hear a grinding noise. Immediately we turn the car off and re start, noise goes away. Could this be the starter going bad? Dealership wants 400 to fix.

So, Is this likely (from my terrible description) to be a wheel bearing problem....

Heard a grinding noise coming from the back of the truck today. First thing I thought to look at was the rotors. They looked warped/wavy and were really hot. I'm worried that the pads are used up and its metal on metal, really looks like rotor damage. I'm confused by this...
1) I get a safety inspection done every time i'm in for service (6km), no service rep has ever warned me about my pads.
2) Aren't squealers supposed to warn the driver of low pads?
3) Pads wear out faster in the front than they do in the back. How could the back pads be used up already? The front looks fine.
So if my back calipers are seized, or the e-brake line froze, then i'm driving with the back brakes engaged full time. This should not have happened to a truck so young. Do I have a warranty case here?
I have a 2007 SF Ltd. About 6 months ago I noticed a tiny grinding noise coming from the front end. I took it to the place that installed the brakes and rotors and had them look at it. The said that they didn't see anything but the cleaned up the rotors and oiled the slide pins. That didn't seem to sold the problem, so I took it to the shop that does all my inspections and such. They mentioned that they didn't see anything and that if if was only first thing in the morning, it might be some very minor rust that is building and being worn off. Lately, the grinding noise has gotten much more consistent and loud. Both places said the pads looked almost new and other than the turning of the rotors, they looked fine. If it isn't the pads or the rotors, what could be causing the grinding noise? A friend of mine had the same issue but his dealer told him that his vehicle "just had noisy brakes". That doesn't see to be an acceptable answer.
View 3 RepliesI have a 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe and there is a loud grinding sound when the car is in park and neutral. This noise doesn't happen all the time but i would say 50% of the time. When there is the noise it does go away when i put the car into drive or reverse.
View 16 RepliesSo I have a 2000 Hyundai Accent, 1.5L with an automatic transmission. I'm hearing a grinding noise when I'm driving. It gets faster as the car goes faster, but the engine RPM has no effect only the speed of the car.
I got new tires, changed the CV axle shaft on both sides, and I also changed the front struts as I was told that one of the struts was bad the last time I took the car for an alignment. None of that has had any effect on the grinding noise.
Then I jacked the car up on both sides and let the wheels spin, and the grinding noise is present that way as well. Then I jacked up just one side at a time. When the driver's side wheel is spinning, the noise is audible, but not when just the passenger side is spinning.
I then disconnected the brake caliper from the driver's side and held it up with a tie wrap to keep it out of the way. The noise is still audible when the wheel is spinning, so it's not the pads or a clip or anything like that.
So now I'm down to a couple of ideas.
1) Wheel bearings
2) Something is hosed in the differential or transmission. I'm guessing that the differential is more likely, as the transmission should effect both sides the same, right?
I'm going to check the wheel bearings now, though to me it seems unlikely to be the problem.
My 2007 Santa Fe Limited 3.3L with 102,000 miles started making a grinding/ticking noise yesterday. It's hard to tell but it sounds like its coming from directly under the center console. The noise is directly proportional to the speed and if I put my hand on the shift selector, I can feel the tick vibrations. It drives and shifts fine. What it could be? I'm hoping it's not a transmission issue. I'm thinking something with the AWD connection to the rear wheels.

View 3 RepliesLots of flooded roads yesterday, and I drove through a few deep water spots -- maybe 8"-10" mostly at VERY slow speeds. The car is a 2009 Toyota Matrix, standard transmission. It was pouring yesterday, and very loud so I don't know if the grinding noise started yesterday. Today when I first started it, I heard a grating/grinding noise in the front about in the middle. It sounds a bit like I'm dragging a large stick or a piece of metal under the car, but there is nothing dragging. I can be coasting, sitting still (but only when I first start it), accelerating, or braking. That said, it's not constant. It comes and goes as I'm accelerating. Once I get up to speed in 4th, I don't hear it. What it might be? Usually, I just hope that noises will go away. Do I need a mechanic to check it out?

Problem : I have a strange grinding noise coming from the front of the car. I can only hear it if all the windows are shut. The noise starts when the car starts moving, Doesn't matter if its in neutral or not, clutch pressed or depressed. The noise is there even if I switch off the engine whilst the car is still moving. It goes away when the car stops.
Yesterday I noticed that if I move the gear stick from left to right OR right to left in the neutral position (while the car is still moving), the noise increases!! What could be the potential problem? is it related to transmission? brakes? or wheel bearings?
