Here is my problem I own a 2006 2.7l santa fe and I will be sitting there with a quarter tank of gas I then my gas light will come on I will look and I am outta gas then it will go back to a quarter, I am noticing it more often.
View 2 RepliesI just picked up a gen II prius last week. it came with 70k miles and almost a full tank, i think 2 'pips' were gone. since I got my car I've driven a total of 135 miles and already my fuel level went down to 2 pips.
I needed to fill up my tank, so on my way home today I went to a gas station filled up with 87 octane fuel. The fuel pump automatically stopped after about 5 gallons. I had less than a quarter tank, therefore my car should not be full with 5 gallons, according to the manual the tank is just shy of 12 gal. I know my prius has the shrinking bladder or whatever since its a g II, but this is a little extreme. According to my car, I've been getting an average of 35 mpg.
Not my Elantra, but an '05 Santa Fe 2.7 ... I have a fuel leak from the driver's side of the tank. It has continued leaking while the vehicle has been parked with about a quarter tank of gas, even after 8 hours. I can see where it is leaking from - a quarter size depression in the tank - but I think this is some sort of plastic pan, not the tank itself.
Is there is a plastic pan under the tank?
If so, does it cover just the bottom half?
If it is a plastic pan, is the tank itself plastic or metal?
If it is plastic I don't see how it could develop a leak, so is it possible for the leak to be at the top of the tank due to a fuel line problem (maybe some mysterious syphon condition)?
I searched the forum and leaking fuel tanks don't seem to be a common problem. My usual parts store doesn't even have a listing for a replacement fuel tank.
I am having this issue if it's one. With the fuel level below last quarter, I'm having the time of starting the engine longer (cranking time). I tried several times, leaving the fuel level reach the last quarter, with same result. Reaching that level of fuel the problem appears.
Another issue is that sometimes when the day is hot and the fuel level is not necessary below quarter, the starting time is longer too. It's a Santa Fe AWD 2.4L Automatic.
We have a 2002 Sante Fe with v6 and 270,000 km on it. Just had extreme loss of power and jerky acceleration from a stop. This has happened a few times in the past year and each time with a 1/4 tank of fuel? We pulled into a gas station, filled it up and away we go like nothing was wrong?

View 1 RepliesOk so the fuel gauge says empty and the low fuel light stays on even though the tank is full. I'm assuming its either the gauges or the sending unit. If it is the sending unit where is it located on this car?
View 4 RepliesOnce I reach highway speeds on cruise control, I would feel my car to start slowing down, then a second or two later the car jerks and starts accelerating again. A few times I beat it to the punch and pressed the clutch pedal. The RPMs just dropped and the car died. This happens ONLY after a quarter tank of gas is left. I get no lights, No check engine; nothing... Where should I start looking. BTW I have a 2002 Jetta GLI VR6 24V.

I checked the gas cap and it is as tight as can be. The car was working fine this morning (I use that word loosely, it's a POS), and then after I get off of work, the message shows up. I'm at a quarter tank right now, so I'll fill up tomorrow.
Yeah i have a 2005 mecury montego all wheel drive car. In the last year, sometimes the gas gauge will drop from a quarter tank to nothing sometimes on a sharp right turn. Once I have ran out of gas because the message says i have for instance, 30 miles to empty. So my fiance got the book that came with car and there was actual reset instructions which he did. But it didnt work. Called my dealership and the mechanic said he had never heard of this, although its in the car manual. so whats your thoughts on this strange behavior? Or is because i am a true nascar fan and always want to go left.....
View 1 RepliesWell, just got back from my dealer - had them check into why after driving approximately 20 miles my fuel gauge registers 3/4 full. They said it has nothing to do with the cluster gauge everything checks out as accurate. My vehicle had the ECU 293 update applied at production. According to them is it because there is something preventing my fuel tank from filling all the way up. According to the service rep when the pump clicks off, my fill up is about 3-5 gallons short.
When I took delivery of the vehicle I noticed that the distance for the remaining (full) tank of gas read around 384. I've never seen that number again. Now when I do a fill up the best tops out at 310 or so. Where exactly did my 70+ additional miles until empty go?
They opened a case for my vehicle with Hyundai and said that Hyundai is already aware of this problem and they are working on a repair.
2003 F150 5.4l Super Crew. 40k miles. Current service.
About a year ago I ran out of gas on a hill, this is when my strange problem started. Since then I have ran out of gas at least two other times, but both times the tank was between 1/4 and 1/2 on the gauge and only took 8-10 gallons to fill up, so the tank was far from empty! Both times. after I put a gallon or two in, the truck started right up and ran fine. I have gone long trips and ran the tank down to near empty (light on not really empty) and the truck had no problems. But every now and then between 1/4 and 1/2 it just dies and will not start until I put a gallon or two in the tank.
So today, at about a half a tank, the truck dies. I call for the tow service and when the tow truck driver gets there I explain what has been going on. He jumps in the drivers seat and works his magic on the ignition. I don't know exactly what he did but he turned the key to on for like 10 seconds, removed the key, put it back in, turned it to AC.... and so on, obviously ran a clear code or something.... then he turns it over and it fires right up, this is without adding any fuel!
He said that there may have been an air bubble in the line when I ran out of gas before and the computer code needed to be cleared. Is the tow truck guy right? am i in the clear here or do i need to started checking fuel pressure, pumps, filters and so on?
So my 7.3 started sputtering and lost power, died on the side of the road. I wasn't far from home put about 8 gallon of diesel in the tank with a couple of fuel jugs and it fired right up.
Gauge was reading 1/8 of a tank and low fuel light did not come on. (low fuel light comes on when you start) Gauge came up to about 1/2 after putting fuel in.
What happened? Gauge was always reliable and low fuel light always did work. Only work done to fuel system was had new tank straps put on a couple of months ago.
I have a 2006 F250 c/c LB and I am curious, how much fuel is left in the tank when the low fuel light comes on?
View 8 RepliesI have a 2004 F150 XLT 5.4 L 79,000 miles. Yesterday i was driving home turned a corner and the low fuel light came on and the fuel gauge is well below empty. I had approx 1/2 tank of fuel when it happened. I have since filled tank all the way but the gauge will not move and low fuel light stays on. Everything else is working fine! I have never run the truck low enough on fuel to make the dummy light come on.....
View 5 RepliesI have a 2007 Santa Fe. If I fill the tank to full, or close to full I will have a fuel smell in the car until the tank runs under 3/4. If I keep it under 3/4 I usally do not get the smell in the car.
The dealer could not figure it out and I still have this issue. It seems the smell is more in the front of the cabin then the rear. It just could seem that way since the smell is very strong. I have to park the car with the windows open.
There are no fuel leaks, no fuel on the ground, no drips, and the no spillage when I filled the tank.
I have a 2007 Santa Fe Limited with 112000 miles on it, and its having some issues with the fuel gauge. It doesn't tell me the accurate gas level in tank.. it's either half-full or on empty. The check engine light is also on. What could be the problem? Is it an expensive fix?
View 1 RepliesI've got a 2004 Santa fe V6 2.7 with a strange problem (145k miles).
On Sunday I filled up the tank and the car would start but not stay running the engine would just peter out and die. Took me a few minutes and a little revving and feathering the gas to get it to where the engine would not die b/f I got it into gear. After driving a mile home I turned off the car and restarted it 3 times w/o incident.
There was a previous episode that was very similar a few months ago. However, this was an isolated incident. I did a little research on the fuel filter and discovered the necessity of pulling out the back seats and did not take any action beyond always buying good gas. I lied to myself that the first freeze and a very cold engine was somehow to blame.
Friday morning I left on a trip (w/o getting more gas) and in route I filled the tank twice and both times it did not want to start. The car stated like normal when I left for the return trip. I stopped for gas once on the way home with the intent of buying just enough gas to get home and leaving the engine running while I pumped. As soon as I removed the gas cap the engine died and was once again difficult to start (the engine seemingly becoming more stubborn with each incident).
Additionally the idle while in gear was not as smooth as it has been but not necessarily to the point where I would have noticed if I had not been watching closely. I spent about 10 minutes on idle and under 10 mph creeping through a construction zone and the rpm dropped sharply a few times. what this could be?
I have an 04 Elantra GT. My gas gauge is showing full but the car is running out of gas. I try to fill the tank and I get the annoying click and after trying for a few, gas comes up the filler and overflow tube and makes a mess. At the same time, I was getting a P0449 code. I got an evap canister from the junkyard and that seems to have gone away.
Tried diagnosis but dropping the fuel tank to access the lines. When I jack the tank back up into position, you can hear gurgling sounds and as if the gas is coming up the fill tube. I also opened the access panel under the seat to see the pump assembly and when I removed the 8mm bolts, gas came pouring out. There was definitively gas in there. Checked the float on the pump assembly and it moved?
There is also something at the fuel neck at the top. Don't know what it is and if that could also be part of the problem.
After over filling my fuel my car stalls (sometimes) on going back to idle. Not sure what to checks, check engine light is not on.
View 2 RepliesI have an 01 6.8L v10 Limited 2wd with 143K. I have had it for about 3 months and have noticed a raw gas smell sometimes at the back of the vehicle. I come home from work, get out walk to the back and can smell it. Noticed it once or twice while at a stop light with windows down.
I have looked at some of the other post about this and eliminated some of the options , I think. There are not any trouble or pending codes when scanned. The gas mileage around town is about 13.5 mpg. Pulled all the spark plugs and they look good. Performance seems good to me being that I have only had it for a few months. Idle is smooth.
Smell is definitely from the rear / gas tank area. I have test driven it down the street and then start checking immediately without finding anything obvious. I do not see or smell anything under the hood. I have looked at the fill tubes and they are not wet or rusted. I have not seen any drips or wet areas looking around it immediately after driving. Just the raw fuel smell at the rear.
So I think it is something in, on or with the tank...?? Also can the metal skid plate/box be removed from around the tank without the tank itself dropping or is it all one big unit that drops down?
