Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: Code P0430 - Bank 2 Cat Efficiency Low
Jul 7, 2012
05 santa fe/3.5L/ owned since new. Had a misfire problem and solved that by changing coils/plugs/wires...
Still getting a P0430 code (bank 2 cat efficiency low)
Following the Repair manual troubleshooting of that code says
Read H02S - got a scan tool and did that -
Comparing Bank 1 H02S1 and 2 show they are are different voltages and do not follow.
Comparing Bank 2 H02S1 and 2 show nearly identical traces.
I also checked the wiring harness around the sensors and check for air leaks...couldn't hear/see/feel any.
My conclusion based on the info obtained is that the bank 2 cat is bad and needs to be replaced.

CEL and VSC came on so i ran the diagnostic tool and got this msg :
P0430 Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank #2)
what could it be? The car performs fine, no MPG decrease, no performance impact..

Have the EML on on my GS450h, read the fault codes and I have 2 fault codes that are identical (P0430). I cleared the fault codes and it stays off for a day, then as soon as I go above 60mph the next day, it comes back on again, the faults are stored and not current codes. I've not noticed any MPG loss or loss of power whatsoever! So am I safe to assume its not the catalysts? Only other thing I could think of is an o2 sensor gone bad perhaps? I don't want to spend money really as I'm about to sell the car for a more economical one for my 150miles per day commute to work! Just had all 4 wheels refurbished too which set me back a fair amount, now this!

I have a 2005 Santa Fe with the 2.7l engine....during the last two summers I've had this code pop up only to disappear. Well, we're into the winter here in New York and the code popped up again and after a week its still on. What's causing this and are there any easy fixes? The wife loves the SUV, its got 120,000 miles on her, the engine is strong and the tranny was rebuilt this summer (that another story).

Recently I pulled code P0420, AKA Bank 1: Efficiency Below Threshold.
To start from the beginning...several weeks ago my EPC light came on so, like most educated consumers I decided to buy a vag-com. I pulled the codes and got both the Bank 1 and Bank 2 efficiency below threshold codes (p0420, p0430). I reset the light and literally within 3 minutes the EPC light came back on only this time just Bank 1.
So I drove around again for a week and the check engine light came on this time, back to Bank 1 and Bank 2. Whether trying to replace the spark plugs will possibly fix the misfires, its Cat Converter replacement or possibly just replacement of 02 sensors. I have been reading mixed responses.
FYI I use synthetic oil and chance the oil every 7500-9000 miles, have 89,000 miles and have never changed my spark plugs.

P0420 Catalyst System below efficiency -- bank 1
I've had this code for a couple months trying to trouble shoot it. My gas mileage has been affected, as I'm getting about 23/24 MPG city/highway. I replaced the upstream 02 sensor with am aftermarket Bosch variety( I'm not sure why a non-OEM one would make a difference, as long it's working correctly).
My car has 253k miles, the cat doesn't rattle and I don't smell any rotten eggs or anything, but it has to be clogged or the 02 sensor I got was defective. My engine runs fine and I don't have any problems accelerating or decelerating. It may still be the 02 sensor since the gas mileage decrease is so significant, or it could be my converter is really clogged up.

I have been getting a CEL P0420 for low cat efficiency bank 1 on my 2002 Ford Escape V6. The truck runs fine otherwise. I have ran two loads of Cataclean and the light keeps coming back a few days after CEL reset so I am pretty sure one of cats is done. I am going to replace with an aftermarket cat. My question is, with this code, do I need to replace the front exhaust manifold cat or the rear manifold cat?

I have a 2006 Subaru Forester with 95,000 miles on it. Earlier today the CEL (solid) and cruise (flashing) came on while I was driving. I believe it may have occurred as I was accelerating up hill. I filled up yesterday, so I tightened the gas cap when I stopped. On my way home, I stopped by my mechanic and they read the code; P0420 Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold Bank was the code that was read. They reset the code for me but told me that the catalytic converter is what needs to be replaced.
My question: Could the light coming on be incidental (i.e., is it possible that it was a "blip" and my catalytic converter is okay?)? My mechanic said he thinks it is, and that my car should last me quite a bit longer. I am asking because I've put in a bit of money into the car of late and I'm wondering if I should just jump ship. I should say that the majority of the repairs are maintenance (e.g., brakes, tires).

I have a 99 Tiburon 2.0 DOHC that I cant seem to get through emissions. The code, p0422 main catalyst efficiency below threshold bank 1 keeps popping up even after replacing the cat converter (twice) and replacing both 02 sensors. What else could be triggering this code and how to fix it?

I've got a 2004 Prius with about 140,000 miles. Overall, the car has worked great, and I've kept up with regular service.
Several months ago, I started having bad misfiring of the engine. When I got it into the shop, it turned out to be two faulty ignition coils. The shop advised me to replace them all, which I did. Soon afterwards, however, the CEL came on, indicating a P0420 - "Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1".

P0420 code. Catalyst Efficiency Below Normal (Bank 1)
This was the explanation I got from autozone. First question is how serious is this? The car seems to drive fine and normal, but I just purchased this car about a month ago. The light turned off after the guy at autozone plugged in the scanner. I am sure it will come back on again after some driving. Is it ok to drive with it on?

2001 V6 Passat with 125k miles throwing a P0430 code.
Having trouble on cold starts, takes about 10 minutes to finally get it to turn over. When it does the idle is extremely rough. For the first 1/4 mile the car bucks, stutters, and misfires. After that it runs fine and starts fine when already warm. I am noticing slightly decreased gas mileage but nothing major.
Valve cover gaskets were replaced 2 months ago, but were leaking oil for at least a year before I could afford to have them replaced. I am still noticing some oil leakage, however not as much as before. I have had both O2 sensors replaced twice in the past 5 years. Timing belt was replaced at 98k. What might be causing the starting issues?

2001 Jetta 2.0, manual trans
I've been having problems with intermittent P0420 cat below efficiency code. Everything else is fine, no codes, runs great. I tried spacing the post cat sensor back w/ extender bung (after replacing post cat sensor..) and still get the code. I don't hear any rattling or anything to make me think cat is bad physically. I was told by dealer that a code update might resolve for $200 - which got me thinking that that if that was so, it should should be a problem which Feds should be aware.
I searched safercar.gov and found this NHTSA ID Number: 10054864
It's a service bulletin saying that VW made the limits too sensitive and it seems there was a customer satisfaction campaign to update code - pdf on site CSC-10054864-8736
It says:
May 2007
Subject: Emissions Service Action N7
1999-2002 Jetta, Golf and GTI with VR6 Engine
Update Electronic Control Module (ECM) Software for Catalytic Converter Monitoring System Dear Volkswagen Owner: We are writing to inform you of an emissions service action on some 1999-2002 Jetta, Golf and GTI VR6 engine vehicles. Our records show that you are the owner of one of these vehicles.
What Is The Problem? The electronic control module (ECM) software for the catalytic converter monitoring system is too sensitive. This can cause the MIL to come on, and some vehicles may exceed Federal and/or California emissions standards. Also, in some cases this leads to unnecessary catalytic converter replacement. What Will Volkswagen Do? Dealers will update the ECM software.

I recently had some work done on my 2001 VW Passat 1.8T (timing, water pump, major tune up). IT had 72K miles.....
Now I'm getting the following:
Code P0171 Too Lean (Bank 1).
Emission Light turns on / off.
Check engine light comes on and stays on after about 20 miles. Can this be the oxygen sensor?

My car is running great, no issues. I just changed the ignition coils, i was having a misfire. It was easier since i was changing the back to replace them all. My CEL and VSC went on and it is code P0430 bank 2. Before i spend a ton on a new catalytic converter i would like to change the o2 sensors. Problem is, I am not sure which ones to change or where to start. Is this even something i am able to do?

My 2009 Camry came down with the p0157 code which I looked up & is oxygen sensor circuit, low voltage bank 2 sensor 2. I'm trying to figure out which side this is(driver or passenger)? Also have a p0430 code-catalyst system efficiency below threshold.

My CEL came on and is throwing code P0430. Is it just an o2 sensor? if so which one primary or secondary?

I recently purchased a used, high mileage 2004 Infiniti G35x (AWD) 145K miles from a reputable new car dealer here in my town. The car was impeccably maintained and clean inside and out. Just a week or two after the purchase my SES light came on revealing engine Code: P0430 (catalyst efficiency below threshold bank 2) pointing to a new catalytic converter in my future. Infiniti recommends premium unleaded for this vehicle. I found out my son filled her up with mid-grade unleaded. Is there any chance this could have triggered the SES light to come on? (Previous owner states he always used premium unleaded in the vehicle since ownership.) I also double checked the gas cap to make sure it was on tight. I find it extremely odd that the SES light would come on so shortly after the purchase. I mean what are the odds? Don't dealers run a diagnostic scan of their trade-ins to check history and for potential problems prior to selling their used cars? I test drove this car numerous times without any indication of a problem and right on the heels of the purchase it passed state emissions... now just a few days later, the SES light comes on. Why wouldn't emissions pick that up? I have reset the SES light (code) and filled her up with premium unleaded. Now it's a waiting game to see if the light comes on again. If the light reappears, I plan on taking it back to the dealer to work out some kind of "reasonable solution" to repair costs. I'll find out just how willing he is to stand behind his cars. I realize that this is a high mileage car, and I hardly expect perfection, but I didn't see this coming. What to do... what to do... By the way, I checked all the fluid levels ... no discoloration in the oil (fresh, golden brown)... no discoloration in the coolant... transmission fluid, good... all other levels are good. Car runs fine, no rough idle in cold...

My son's 97 GA with 3.1 has been throwing trouble code of 0420 and my OTC monitor say it is a "TWC System Low Efficiency". What a TWC is or what or where to start checking.

Just read that a clogged EGR valve is common and reduced performance and increases emissions. Need to clean this valve? Where is it located?? Just noticed tonight that there is not a lot of suction from my vacuum lines and I wondered if this is related. Plus I have a p0430.

SO all three lights came on and wouldn't go away.
Ran a scanner for code and got p0430.
Took it dealership for estimate or fix.
Go figure : code summary: Causes.
Reported fixes or Causes: for code p0430
- catalytic converter has failed.
- Air fuel ratio sensor
- Bank 2 cat converter
- Bank 2 (A/F) ratio sensor
- Oxygen 02 sensor
- downstream Oxygen 02 sensor
- Exhaust pipe
- Mass Air flow sensor
So I am waiting thinking ok let be one of the above causes or fixes that is cheap.
