Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: 2004 - Low Pitched Acceleration Whine

Apr 3, 2013

I will try to film the sound and post it later; but for now I have a 3.5L V6 AWD with 85k on it. i get grunting and groaning on colder mornings and sometimes a med pitched whine, more noticeable at higher speeds in town.

Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: 2002 - Odd High Pitched Whine Noise

This has begun in the last few weeks on my '02 SF (which only has a couple of months left until it is retired )....

If I'm going anywhere between about 90-110 KM, I'll hear an odd high pitched whine. It sounds almost like microphone feedback, and I'm having a really hard time trying to find out where the sound is coming from. It is very subtle and comes and goes.

Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: High Pitched Whine - Parking Brake And Battery Light Came On

First I noticed that the parking brake light and battery light came on, which would indicate an alternator problem. I took it in, they cleaned up the engine, replaced a few hoses and said the alternator was fine. Two days later I'm driving home, I make it to my driveway and the battery dies. I was able to charge it up and dive it back to the station where they told me the alternator had burned out...

A few days later I notice my brake lights weren't working, but that was just a blown fuse.

Starting today, there is a high pitched whine when I'm driving. I can barely hear it when I'm idle, but going up to 20 or 30 it gets very loud, then kind of dies off. It definitely gets louder when I'm accelerating, vs going a steady speed. As I was driving earlier, the air bag light came on for a brief second, and I didn't think anything of it, until later tonight when I was driving home and it came on again, but this time it stayed on.

Ford 7.3L Power Stroke (1999-2003) :: High Pitched Turbo Whine Under Heavy Acceleration

I'm on the road and I pulled over for a pit stop so I don't have time for a search right now, but I noticed under heavy acceleration a turbo whine so high pitched it almost sounds like metal on metal. Is this normal and I just noticed it, a leak somewhere, or maybe indication of something worse? The truck seems to be running ok otherwise. It's an '02 w/7.3 and 220k miles.

Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: 2004 3.5L - Whine Occurred On Starting The Car

Drove the vehicle today (current at 156k miles) about 40 miles then came back home. Left again to run an errand. After coming out of the store and starting the car, a very pronounced 'whine' occurred. It kept whining for about 2 miles and with 3 blocks left to go, the whine suddenly stopped. No CEL appeared and the radiator temp was normal, oil level was fine and the pwr steering fluid in the reservoir was at the max level. I suspected it might be the p/s pump but, if so, why did the noise cease?

GMC - Sonoma :: 2001 - High Pitched Whine When Apply Brakes

When I apply my brakes I hear a high pitched whine. I thought the pads needed replaced, but upon checking them there appears to be plenty of pad left. What else could this noise be? It's only when I apply the brake that I hear this, I suspect it may be something with the brake line but am not experienced enough to be sure.

Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: 2004 - Passenger Side Low Buzz / Whine - Loud When AC Or Heat Defroster On

I have the 3.5 LX AWD 2004 Santa Fe 102,000 miles purchased new. My power steering fluid reservoir was leaking from the top a lot. I read here that the screen in it could be clogged. I went to the garage the manager never heard of such a thing he said, and never heard of a PS reservoir having a screen (I gave him the TS. He said if I got the part and wanted it changed they would change it. I did that. It was done 2 weeks ago and now it all dry under there. But, now.. there is a low whine on the passenger side under the hood toward the back, but when I put the A/C on or the heater on defrost (Not when heater is on, only in defrost) there is a loud rumble/hum from the same area. Shut A/C or defroster it goes back to a low buzz/hum again.

I had the power steering pump replaced at the dealer about 2 years ago, its not old. The noise is NOT any louder when I crank the steering wheel all the way to either side. The fluid since replacing the Power steering fluid reservoir is staying at the same level, full, no leaking. When I put everything on, lights heat only (No defroster), radio, lights the noise doesn't get any louder either, I tested that. The other night after driving about a half hour to and from a place I went to u-turn in a parking lot and that whine was louder for a minute and while driving forward slowly out of the parking lot getting up to speed.

When I asked about the PS fluid reservoir, I had also, asked the repair shop manager his opinion, of that loud hum/rumble when I put the A/C on (At the time I thought it only happened with the A/C when the compress popped on). He listened said "That's the A/C compressor it's going and its going and cost more to replace it then its worth on your 2004." So, that's the background.

Questions: 1. Just wondering if you think it is the A/C compressor that is the loud noise when on, would the A/C compressor even go on when the defroster is on, the A/C is off, and the heat on and there for still make that loud rumble??? Or does that defroster fact kind of mean its not the A/C compressor??

2. What is your opinion of the low buzz/whine noise now (When heat/AC off)? I can't pin point it totally in park when listening, its very low (Except that one point where it was loud for a few minutes driving out of the parking lot.) (The motor sounds a bit louder in it in front too just side observation)

I almost worried if the low buzz was the Transmission as its fluid hasn't been changed in a few years (Because the mechanic said sometimes changing the fluid when its been a lot of miles between can actually cause problems to the transmission) It was done at the dealer around 45,000 miles and now my Santa Fe has 102,000 miles.

Could the power steering pump be going bad in only 2 years from what I've described? Or could the PS fluid reservoir having been spitting PS fluid from the top for a couple of weeks have caused damage to the PS pump now?

The fluid never got lower then full when it was coming out of the top and only when driving, I kept checking it. The mechanic who put the PS fluid reservoir in said he had no idea if it leaked from the top due to the screen as he felt the screen had only minor debris that was not blocking a lot of the screen since its a big screen (He didn't look too hard though), and it was possible even a small crack in the reservoir could cause that same fluid coming out at the top. He said it could be either he didn't notice a crack either.

Or are these two noises possibly not related even though possibly from the same area on the passenger side under hood.

Prius (2004-09) :: High Pitched Whine When Accelerating

My car has 155k miles and I haven't had any previous issues with it. I noticed probably 30k miles ago the beginning of a whine sound when the car accelerates. The noise has been getting louder (it's really not that loud) but I am wondering what this could be. I want to avoid anything happening to the car and want to find out what the problem is so I can fix it.

Ford Super Duty (1999-2016) :: 2001 F350 V10 - High Pitched Whine Appear / Disappear

I'm having an issue with my 2001 F350 V10. A seriously annoying high pitched whining noise appeared a while ago, then disappeared, and has now come back.

It happens as soon as I start my truck, whether it's cold or warmed up already. it increases in pitch and loudness as I increase RPM, it also does exactly the same in neutral. As soon as I put it in gear (R, D, 2, 1) it completely disappears and will come back as soon as I shift back to P or N. Strangely, if I drive around town for a few minutes, when I get back home and shift to park the sound doesn't really come back, sometimes it will be faint but usually it's totally gone. But if I shut the truck off and turn it right back on again then it's there again.

It's coming from somewhere in the engine compartment or close but due to the nature of the sound it's very difficult to locate. I got underneath using a screwdriver as a stethoscope and listened to the transmission, transfer case, starter, oil pan and even the gastank and it doesn't sound like it's coming directly from any of them. While underneath I noticed power steering fluid leaking from the pump behind the pulley and dripping off the hose. Somehow though I don't think it's related as the sound disappears in gear and doesn't change at all when turning the wheels. I cleaned the fluid off and drove around a bit and it doesn't seem to be leaking too badly and my reservoir is totally full.

The truck otherwise is driving as good as it always has and whatever this sound is doesn't seem to be having any effect on performance (yet...) ...

Prius (2004-09) :: Low Pitched Roar Or Whine Coming From The Front

About 3-4 months ago, I noticed a low-pitched "roar" or whine coming from the front of my 07, especially at 35mph and above. The pitch of the sound gets higher the faster I go, but its never a high-pitched squeal or anything, just a roaring whine that has gotten somewhat more noticeable as time has gone on. 184,500 miles on the car, Goodyear Assurance tires that will probably need to be replaced fairly soon but are certainly not bald, reasonable tread left. I bought the car with just under 160K, I've put about 25K miles on the tires, but don't know the car mileage when the tires were originally installed.

I had the tires rotated during an oil change about 6 weeks ago, which made little if any difference in the sound. I asked a mechanic I know (and trust) at the non-dealer where the oil change and tire rotation was done, he said to turn slightly left and right while driving to see if the pitch changes, which may indicate a front bearing problem. There was maybe a slight pitch change in the whine when I did that, if any. He said it might be the start of a bearing problem. I also don't notice any change in the pitch or unusual behavior when making turns.

So is this a tire problem or front/rear bearing issue? I'm going to take it to the mechanic for him to test drive, would I be better served going to a dealer? Given the car mileage, it could very well be a bearing problem, it would certainly be due.

Santa Fe (CM - 2007-12) :: Loud Gear Whine With Light Acceleration

'07 FWD Santa Fe exhibits pretty loud "'gear whine" with light acceleration.

Recent ATF change got loads of nasty gook and metallic sludge out of trans.. but no change in gear whine.

Dumb question, but do 2wd Santy's have a differential that I can drain and refill to quieten this whine down a little?

Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: 2004 - Shudder When It Comes To Stop On Acceleration

Ok here's the situation. 2004 Santa Fe 2.7 AWD 170,000 miles.

I recently had to replace the front passenger side Drive axle. That was a piece of cake. However, since then the car has developed a shudder when it comes to stop (felt like the shudder on acceleration that was fixed by the dealer with a reflash). Suddenly it got so bad that it stalls when put into gear with the brake on. It feels like it is not coming out of converter lockup.

When I drained the fluid I replaced it with Valvoline Import multi-vehicle full synthetic (it says it is spiII). I latter added another half quart of Castrol transmax import multi-vehicle (also spIII). Did I screw up my trans? Will a flush work? Or do I just need to replace the trans and torque converter?

Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: 2004 2.7L V6 2WD - Codes For Sputtering / Sluggish Acceleration

2004 Santa Fe 2.7L V6 2WD ... Car was running fine, filled it with gas, and upon starting, heard a backfire into the intake manifold. It coded for a Cylinder 3 misfire so I had plugs and wires changed.

Now...The car starts, idles rough, accelerates sluggishly, and running rough any time it was around 2000 RPM. After I changed the plugs, it started bucking a little and stalls when I take off in the morning.

Coded and it's reading 7 codes, but some are duplicates:
-P0274 Cylinder 5 Injector Control High
-P0305 Cylinder 5 Misfire
-P0102 MAF or VAF A Circuit Low Input
-P0050 H02S Bank 2 Sen 1 Heater Circuit
-P0030 HO2S Bank 1 Sen 1 Heater Circuit
-P0274 Cylinder 5 Injector Control High (Shows Twice)
-P0102 MAF or VAF A Circuit Low Input (Shows Twice)

After having a backfire and then cylinder misfire...replacing the plugs and wires.

Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: 2004 2.4L - Vibrating Noise On Hard Acceleration

New here - 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe 2.4L Autostick//great car so far, but this is annoying me!

I can't feel any vibration, I just bought the vehicle and wondering where this noise might be coming from? If you rev the engine over 3k there is a strange vibrating/humming/rattling?? noise but you can't feel any vibration. I was thinking it might be the plastic cover on the engine or maybe something loose? I've already had the belt tensioners/belts checked out and that is not the issue.

It also sounds like a ricer when accelerating heavily (but from inside the cabin) there aren't any exhaust leaks at least I don't think so...

Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: 2004 2.4L - Whirring / Whining Upon Acceleration Whenever AC Running

For about 3 years, our SF (about 125,000 miles) has experienced the whirring/whining upon acceleration whenever the AC was running. I didn't do anything about this as the AC still worked well.

Just a few days ago, while running the AC for a "recharge" during our recent cooler weather, I realized that the AC was not cooling below outside ambient temperature, nor was the whirring present any more. I assume that the compressor finally seized. (?)

To keep repair costs low, and based upon the description above, where should I begin to look to see where the problem lies? Is it most likely a seized compressor/clutch? I am unsure if this is the issue, since even when driving with the AC turned to "Max", I now notice NO detrimental effects upon the engine/power output, which makes me wonder if the compressor actually seized. Wouldn't a seized compressor actually be very hard for the belt to turn, or possibly burn the belt?

I know the compressors and AC systems on these cars are notorious for dying too soon...

Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: 2004 - Slow Acceleration Which Is Worse After A Stop Sign Or Red Light

I have a Hyundai Santa fe 2004 6cyl 2.7 L , AWD. I am having problem of slow acceleration which is worse after a stop sign or red light. Sometimes while taking turns I feels like that I will not move and I was lucky to be not hit by a Car coming from opposite direction while taking a left turn today.

The Truck’s exhaust pipe broke recently and a auto garage welded it. But I am facing the above problem immediately after the repair of exhaust pipe. If I put more pressure on gas pedal then a mal function indicator comes and today I took it to another mechanic and he gets the error code of P0303 –engine misfire and wants to charge me ~ $600 $ to replace spark plugs and wires. The malfunction indicator goes off also while I am driving and can comes back after a while or a day. With the indicator on, the car drives erratic (minor jolts ) for few meters and then its fine. Since when I am driving on highways then I can go higher speeds without any problem. Is it still misfire issue???

Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: Power Steering Gives Off A Steady Whine

I've got what seems to be a fairly common problem in that my power steering on my 2001 SF gives off a steady whine. I've read in several posts that removing the power steering reservoir and either replacing it or cleaning out the screen solves the problem. I'm ready to give that a shot, but can't seem to figure out how to remove the part. There is a "tab" type of thing on the back of it, but it doesn't seem to do the trick. I'm admittedly no mechanic, but this seems like it should be relatively easy. How to remove the reservoir?

Prius (2004-09) :: 2008 - High Pitched Woo-woo Noise During Acceleration

I took my 2008, 56k in for a new battery after my car sat outside in negative degree temps for a few days. After doing that repair, the dealer recommended a new serpentine belt. Ever since that service appointment, the car is making a high-pitched "woo-wooo" noise during acceleration. It's definitely a noise I've never heard before. I took it back to the dealer two days later; he had the service guy drive it and they both claim the noise is normal and just due to the cold. Is it the belt? Is it the cold? Am I losing my mind?

Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: Faint High-pitched Noise When Apply Brakes

So I've started hearing a faint high-pitched noise when I apply my brakes. It's not EVERY time I apply the brakes, and it's not nearly as loud and annoying as the noise I hear other vehicles make when they need their brakes checked, but it's noticeable.

Also: There's a (possibly related) scratching/rattling noise that just started. I can only hear it with the windows down and it's not very loud. But it happens intermittently when the vehicle is moving or when it's braking, and it makes an almost sputtering sound when I slow to a stop. It will abruptly go silent before I'm fully stopped. Sometimes it cuts in and out, similar to when you've got a short in a speaker wire and the sound cuts in and out.

I'll be getting this checked out. Is this a "drop everything and go to the mechanic" issue, do you think, or more of a "get it looked at when you can"? I should note I haven't had any problems with the car actually braking (yet). It seems to function fine other than the new noises.

Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: Power Steering - Pump Making Whine At Idle

I have a 01 santa fe 2.7 motor. I have read several threads in here regarding the famous pump whine. my pump is making a whine at idle, I have cleaned the bottle and made sure the screen has not restrictions, drained all the fluid, and have inspected the lines for leaks.

With a stethoscope have pin the noised to the pump, the noise travels in the reservoir when I race the engine the noise is more evident on the bottle. I am tempted to replace the pump, but the steering has no issues and operates fine, also no change in the whine noise when moving left to right.
