Santa FE SM (2001-06) :: 2003 - Steady Noise Coming From Underneath In The Center Of Car
May 21, 2011
There is a steady noise which sounds like it is coming from underneath in the center of the car. The noise is consistent at speeds up to 50 kmh (maximum speed where I live). 2003 Santa Fe 2.7l ....

I have a 2002 Santa Fe that has started to have a very loud rattle. It sounds like it is coming from underneath the vehicle toward the rear, possibly the passenger-side wheel-well, but that specific location just may be an auditory illusion.

I have strange rubbing and whumping noises coming from underneath my truck. Yesterday I changed the old e-brake and lines, thought it my be rubbing on the wheel. Today I changed the front and rear axle u-joint and rear pinion seal. The front u-joint was ceased and the pinion seal was leaking. I thought this would cure it but the noise is still there , the noise is more pronounced when I make a turn. Besides that the truck runs perfect. This summer I changed all 4 rotors, calipers and pads and ball joints , shocks and muffler. Tomorrow I will jack the front up and check the front, where the noise would coming from.

My 2007 Santa Fe Limited 3.3L with 102,000 miles started making a grinding/ticking noise yesterday. It's hard to tell but it sounds like its coming from directly under the center console. The noise is directly proportional to the speed and if I put my hand on the shift selector, I can feel the tick vibrations. It drives and shifts fine. What it could be? I'm hoping it's not a transmission issue. I'm thinking something with the AWD connection to the rear wheels.

I have a 2003 F250 4wd with a 5.4 and 6 spd and 175,000 miles. Yesterday I came out to start it and noticed it had a ticking noise coming from underneath. According to the stock gauge it had normal oil pressure and the oil looked nice and clean and was full. I checked it while running and was able to verify that it is coming from the bottom oil pan/bell housing area. Before anybody says exhaust leak, I just put on JBA headers a few months ago and verified it wasn't an exhaust leak. I was assuming it was a rod bearing so I figured I would let it get to operating temp and see what happens. Once it started getting warm it started getting quiet and finally it just stopped once it hit full operating temp. Took it for a drive and found that it does it when in gear no matter what but stops when I put it in neutral and let out on the clutch. it makes the noise in neutral with clutch pushed in, but stops as soon as you let it out.

I've got what seems to be a fairly common problem in that my power steering on my 2001 SF gives off a steady whine. I've read in several posts that removing the power steering reservoir and either replacing it or cleaning out the screen solves the problem. I'm ready to give that a shot, but can't seem to figure out how to remove the part. There is a "tab" type of thing on the back of it, but it doesn't seem to do the trick. I'm admittedly no mechanic, but this seems like it should be relatively easy. How to remove the reservoir?

I hear a knocking sound or a rumbling sound underneath feet area of my 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe when driving over bumpy roads or when traveling over a "washboard" type of road. Shocks & struts appear OK.
Could it be a bad swaybar bushing? How difficult would it be to change on my own? What else could it be? Looking for a schematic for this vehicle to check out all types of bushings?

Santa fe developed a noise underneath that rattles up to the gear shift. It happens mostly when you take your foot off the gas but can happen if your just cruising. Engine does not make any noise while revving it or under load in drive with foot on brake. Definitely sounds rotational but all looks ok underneath.

I've been hearing this whining noise for a while now and sounds like it is coming from underneath the truck somewhere. Sounds more like a power steering pump whining when turning too far on my old chevy!
It is loudest when first starting and is quite loud at times. Sound varies in pitch. I have crawled around under the truck a couple of times and could not tell where it was coming from. The resonance seems to throw the sound around. Once I start to drive, it tones down where it is not noticeable.
This past weekend, I decided to top off fuel before I changed state lines and had to pay more. was about 1/2 tank. Topped off and surprised it only took about 7 gallons. Usually it is about 10 gallons per 1/4 on the fuel guage, so I was expecting near 20 gallons.
Got back in truck and fuel gauge was just under 3/4 tank reading! I had the neck full as I didn't think 7 gallons was right, so I was suspecting the gas station pump was not working right but it was full in the neck for sure.
So, now....thinking that this whining noise is the fuel pump........ How difficult will it be if it is the fuel pump? I have about 144K miles now.

Experienced a noise that is evident when the side window is down which seems to coming from underneath the car. It is difficult to describe but it is a ticking / light metallic sound. Possibly coming from the exhaust system area. It is particularly annoying at a drive through window where the sound reflects off the building.

My 2006 Mazda 3 (2.3 engine) has been producing some new "ticking/clacking" sounds. They seem to be coming from underneath the car (nope, no critters there), seem to last for only the first 1/4 mile, seem to let up after I apply the brakes a time or two. The also increase in frequency as the car speeds up, making me suspect something wheel-related.
Naturally, when I dropped it off at the garage, the techs could not replicate the sound. As I drove off the premises, it kicked up again, but by the time I went around the freakin' block to show the techs, the sound had stopped! I suspect the car is playing with me. It has 100600 miles on it...

My R32 has got about 9,400mi on it, and for the past 3k miles or so, i've been dealing with this metallic scraping/rattling noise coming from underneath the car. When I took it to the dealer, they said it was the exhaust flex pipe, so they replaced it under warranty. Next day after picking the car up, same noise. So i took it in again this morning and they are saying its the flex pipe again, and they don't know if it is fixable.
They are talking to VW tech assistance, and trying to figure something out. I really love this car, but if VW says there is no fix for it, I'm weary about possible future issues without fixes too. Apparently it has something to do with the length of the flex pipes and the material its made out of. He was saying one possible solution is stiffer engine mounts. We'll see where this goes.

This morning I was on my way to work, I stopped at a stop sign then accelerated and turned right, a couple of seconds after that I heard a snapping noise, that sounded like it came from underneath the car, immediately followed by a huge cloud of what I believe was smoke at which time my car began making a noise similar to when you touch spinning blades of a fan. I got over in the grass as fast as I could and turned off the engine.
The smoke cleared and all the noise stopped. When I looked under the hood I couldn't see anything odd but when I looked under the car I noticed liquid dripping out pretty quickly, thought maybe Id blown a hose. Later when the tow truck got there the guy noticed a trail of oil in the grass where I pulled off, and sure enough it was in the road too. I am hoping I cut the engine off quickly enough before it did anymore damage!
A little background, I bought this car used 9 months ago. It has about 130,000 miles on it. 2 months ago I had to replace the intake manifold gasket but before I got to that conclusion I replaced spark plugs and the TPS.
1 month ago I took my car to get the oil changed and the guy said my oil pan had an over-sized drain plug which is used when the original is striped out. He wouldn't remove it and evacuated the oil from the top and told me this needed to be done every time I had my oil changed from now on. I wish I had known that before I changed the oil myself on the previous oil change. I knew it was leaking a little after I did the change but didn't know the reason behind it.

I have a 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe v6. I've had problems with the air conditioning in that it blows hot. Paid around 900 bucks to have a new compressor installed because the mechanic said that would fix it but it didn't. That was about 8 months ago. Still blowing strong but no cold air. About two weeks ago I took the car to a different mechanic who told me it needs a new compressor which would be 900 bucks. I declined that but had the guy do a little work on the breaks. He put new rotors and pads on the front brakes two weeks ago. Now within the past couple days when I start the car up it makes an extremely loud nasty grinding type of sound for a couple seconds then stops. Oil is fine and new. It happened this morning long enough for me to look under the hood and see the fans looked like they were fine, and the loud grinding noise seems to be coming from behind the glove box. It hasn't broke down on me yet, it's just really obnoxious and embarrassing with all the noise every morning.

I am having a strange issue with this vehicle that the dealership can't figure out but it doesn't surprise since here they are a bunch of idiots there anyways....well here it goes....when i start the vehicle there is a fairly loud "buzzing" noise coming from the drl module mounted on the front right side fender, the module feels like the relay inside is clicking extremely fast but not actually staying on, the drl's do not come on however the high beam indicator on the dash is illuminated. This will go away when i turn on the low beams, but i still have no high beams. There is a slight flicker within all the interior lights and headlights which leads me to believe there is a ground issue. I am unable to obtain any schematics for this part of the electrical system to be able to back probe and try to isolate the issue.... The vehicle seems to be fine as long as you turn the low beams on as soon as you start it other then the slight flicker in the lighting inside and out.....

I have a grinding type noise coming from underneath. Not there all the time..heard it last night while driving home....pulled over and waited for a while looked underneath could not see anything. Started off again heard it momentarily then it stopped....but I am thinking that this could be axle/wheel related/ball joint? No engine issue coming from the chassis underneath, possible bearing?
I have a 2003 Gx with 245K on it....but overall runs great!

I just upgraded from an '08 GTI to an '08 R32. When I start my R, I get this subtle whining noise which seems to be coming from underneath the passenger side of the car. I stuck my head under the car to try and determine where it is coming from exactly, but I couldn't really tell. It's not a loud noise, but I hear it whenever the car is running. I did a search for it, but I couldn't find any posts describing this particular noise.

I have an odd one; there's a noise that sounds like an consistent electrical snapping noise coming from the engine while running. Everything seems fine otherwise. Just looking for possible things to check.

I'm completely new to hybrids. I have a 2001 Toyota Prius with 146k miles and its been running very good until some weird things started happening during the past couple of months. When I start it up, the brake light and abs light come on along with a steady high-pitched noise and grinding noise (sounds like ice being scraped). While the lights are on and the sounds are being made, the brake becomes very soft/"spongy" and goes down to the ground without much force at all (It usually always does this when I start it up and sometimes - but not very often - when I'm driving). Sometimes it all goes off and everything is normal again after about 10 mins, sometimes all day, and sometimes only after a minute or two (It usually does it on a cold start, but sometimes even if the engine is heated up, it does it).

I have had the vehicle for about 3 years now. One thing I noticed when originally I got it, was that all the lights, headlights, tail lights, dome light, instrument panel lights would pulsate at a steady rate when it was running. It did not matter whether it was idling or doing 70 on the highway.
When I bought the truck, the stock plastic headlights had long since seen better days. So shortly after I bought it, I swapped out the headlights with new high intensity ones. Each side has it's own high voltage power supply. They have worked fine since I installed them.
Tonight I left the truck running when I parked, and I got out and looked at all the lights. Headlights are fine and steady.
All the other lights, parking, instrument, tail, dome, are still pulsing. It is a steady constant pulsation of less than 1/2 second pulse. The only light that was not visibly pulsing was the digital display on the radio.
What could be the culprit here? Ignition noise? I have never replaced the alternator. It may be original. The battery is less than a year old. Again, it's done this pulsing since day 1, when I bought it used and BEFORE I replaced the stock headlights.
