SC/SL/SW :: 1992 - Loud Engine Noise Almost Like There Is No Muffler On The Car
Nov 13, 2003
I have a 1992 SC Coupe I was just given for free from my Cousin. It has 92, 000 miles on it. The car looks in great shape, it drives smooth. But in the front under the hood there is a loud engine noise almost like there is no muffler on the car, you acutally hear it loud inside th car also. But the sound is in the front. After about 15 min of warming up the car the sound is gone. A freind suggested there could be a crack in the manifold.

I have a 2007 bmw 335i sport package, I like to drive it but the noise from the muffler is getting to be to much. How can I lower the noise. do I need to change the mufflers?

My Dads 92 Volvo's engine is making a knocking noise and I'm wondering what the possible causes are. He doesn't take that great care of it but it didn't over heat or anything. It sounds like it is making a loud knocking or clicking noise directly from the engine when you accelerate. It still runs but definitely has a lack of power.

Yesterday, I heard a loud "pop" while cruising at 60mph. Pull into a rest stop and and discovered a hole in the muffler. The engine now idled roughly, but seem to smooth out about 2000 rpm.
Question for the experts: can the loss of a muffler cause the engine to run rough? It's a 460cid in a '77 F350.

I have a 1992 Civic sedan with a lot of coolant in the muffler. Let me put it this way: we messed up the head and coolant leaked into the exhaust pipe. Anymore detail than that and it's a long story. We have a new head now, but there's a lot of coolant in the muffler. My dad tried taking it off and tipping it on one end, but the fluid is stuck and only dribbles out when we slosh it around. How can we get this fluid out without damage to the muffler?

I recently bought a manual 92 saab, and in the past few days I have been having trouble with the 5th gear. The fluids are all fine and I have not put any real strain on the trans since I've had the car. It worked fine when I bought it but now when I try to put it in 5th there is a loud grinding noise as I let the clutch out. The shifter then pops back into neutral. I tried holding the shifter in 5th to see if that would work, and as I release the clutch the grinding noise gets louder and the gear does not engage at all. I am really hoping it is just a worn down part, and doesn't need a complete transmission overhaul.

My 1999 F-150 came with a horrible performance muffler on it. It is pretty quiet at idle, but off idle it is just too loud.
It is one of those weld-in, cylindrical, red ones. I want OEM sound or quieter, but quality.

I know some of you can't get your truck loud enough and like to scare children and want everyone to look, but I like comfort and quiet. I'd prefer the stock exhaust and I may find one if I can't get mine quieted down but first I'd like to see if I can. The 4" MBRP exhaust was on the truck when I bought it. The thing was straight piped and I added the 30" muffler. Worked immensely but it's still too loud in the cab and there's droning at certain rpm.
Not a big deal on short drives but we use the truck for hauling and towing on long trips and that's when it becomes annoying. It looks like there's enough room for another muffler to easily fit (CC SB). Or I've thought about removing the MBRP muffler completely and putting on one of those crazy long Donaldson mufflers. Think a 2nd muffler would do much at all? Or get one long muffler?

About 4 weeks ago my 2015 sports turbo developed loud exhaust, deep rumble, dealer replaced left rear muffler. Noise still there. I'm suspecting the center muffler.

For the past few months I've been hearing a loud fan-like buzzing noise coming from the passenger side of the front of the car. I don't know that much about cars, but it almost sounds like the engine is racing or something is spinning too fast. It has gotten increasingly worse, and seems especially loud at high speeds on the highway.
It is not the heating/cooling fan - the noise is present when the heating/cooling system is turned off.

Ok, so I have a 1992 GMC Suburban with a 350 TBI with a full dual exhaust and long pipe headers. The problem I'm having is that there is a tapping noise that comes from the driver's side of the engine when you push the gas pedal down. It only makes the noise when you push the pedal down more than about a quarter of an inch. I have tested it down hill with the transmission out of overdrive and the rpms up and there is no tapping. I'm thinking it might be pre-ignition in one of the cylinders but how to test for it other than just disconnecting plug wires one at a time until it stops. Much more I don't know what would be causing it to happen if that is the problem.

I recently took a ride in the back seat of my 2010 Tiguan and noticed that the muffler noise is loud enough to cause headache on long rides. Also I noticed that the back seat vibrates a lot with any tiny imperfection on the road while the front seat you barely feel any vibration on rough roads. Is it only my car?

I have a prius c 2 2012 and we just got about 8-9 inches of snow and after driving in the storm to work when I start up my prius or step on the gas to merge onto say a highway I have a small rattle noise in the rear/ muffler area under the car. My dad says it could just be build up of snow and ice under the car.

I have a 2005 Touareg V8 with air suspension. Over the past few months, I've noticed a ticking noise from the within the muffler. The dealer says "it normal". It's in the shop now because the oil gauge is inop and a ticking noise is coming from the engine. I only have 23K miles on the vehicle.

When I 'hit the gas' I hear a loud clunk or short scratching noise (definitely metal) before the engine starts revving up. I've researched the issue a bit but found no concrete answers. Motor mounts, timing, transmission issue? No one thing seems to cause it as far as I can tell.
I got my '92 Volvo 240 Non-Turboalmost a year ago and haven't really thought much of the noise, but I'm coming up on a 500mi trip to Northern California. I want to make sure it's in tip-top shape before I leave. [IMG]

I was driving home and suddenly the underside of my car *popped* and it sounded like my muffler came loose. Very loud exhaust/turbo whistle.
Luckily I was very close to home and was able to pull in when it completely fell off and started dragging on the street. What part of my exhaust is this and what should I do to repair it?
I just finished fixing a ton of stuff on her and now she does this ?

I have a 1992 Mitsubishi 3000gt VR-4 (Twin turbo)
Last night I was driving.. not even pushing my car or anything. I go through 1st gear fine, then when I hit second, out of nowhere I hear this loud air escaping sound come from under the hood around 3000rpms. As I went up in rpms, the sound just got louder, so I shifted quick.
It sounded like if I just tried to go through it, it would explode or something. I looked this up and found somewhere it said to try tightening the clamps on everything under the hood, so I did that. None of them were loose but I did tighten them a lot.
I also looked at my (boost?) gauge (gauge on the far right in the car) and it seemed like it was stuck at halfway and moved very little when I was driving. I was going to have a person try to feel where the air was coming from when I revved it in neutral but it doesn't seem to do it in neutral..
Never heard it before and I need to figure this out as soon as possible. Trying to sell my car and this happens..

I have a great running 1994 Accord LX with 140k miles, but plan to trade it in within the next 12 months. It has the following two flaws that I'm trying to decide whether or not to repair:
(1) Muffler is rusted out inside (but sound doesn't bother me)
(2) Very minor oil leaks at two different engine gaskets
Should I invest in either of these repairs or just ride it out?

I drive a 1997 Saturn SL1, 295,000 miles. Great car. Good gas mileage, very, very low maintenance. I cleaned the engine about three years ago with an engine cleaner (Gunk?). When I turned on the engine it started to make a loud noise. The best way to describe it is a loud whining noise. It appears to be coming from the AC. When I turn on the AC the noise gets quieter (but it's still annoying). The noise does not appear to have affected the car's performance, but it is loud and annoying. What the problem is?

So, I am driving, engine starts to knock, i stop, check oil, there is none.... I drive to nearest gas station, put in 4 quarts, still knocks but quieter. Drive back home 75 miles, knocking is incredibly loud. Had oil changed 2500 miles ago, no signs of leaking (Did they put oil in after draining? Hard to prove they didn't) By the time I got home, new oil was black. Is this an engine replacement or can it be fixed?
