Ranger :: 2005 - Loud Clunk From Rear Axle

Jan 30, 2014

My '05 Ranger Edge has started making a loud bang from the rear axle. It does it when I apply throttle, apply brake, and to a lesser extent, when I hit a (small) bump. The truck shakes when it bumps almost as if I got rear-ended. What does this sound like?

Golf/GTI VII :: Clunk From Rear Axle Only Happens After Car Has Been Sitting For A While

I'm currently at ~4300 mi, and I'm probably going to cash in on my free oil change at 5k and have the dealer do the radio software update to fix the 87.7 issue, and have them look into this as well.

Here's what happens. Get into the car after its been sitting long enough to completely cool down. Put it in Drive, take the brake off, and start driving. The first time you apply the brake, you hear a "clunk" from the rear axle, sometimes quiet, sometimes louder. After that it will not make the noise again until it has been sitting and cooled all the way down.

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is there's something messed up with one of the parking brake shoes.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Loud Whining Noise Coming From Rear Axle Housing

Some family members borrowed my truck, and when they returned I have a loud whining noise coming from the rear axle, which I have determined is a 9.75 rear. I checked oil level and it was high enough, but has a slight leak from the pinion seal. Everything feels solid but I have nothing to compare it to.

Its on a 2005 Super Cab with the 5.4L 183,000 miles. The front pinion seal was replaced in Feb 2 years ago, by the dealer's mechanic, who may have been a shade tree mechanic.

I am a Youtube Certified Mechanic, as in, I watched about 10 videos of people working on their 9.75 differentials, and realize I don't have all of the tools to do the job, such as a press, or race drivers, or the special gauge.

How many of you have tackled this issue? What did you find? What am I looking at for cost? I am on a very small budget.

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: Vibrating Rear Axle / Metal Chunks In Differential

The rear axle in my dads 1998 ford ranger has been vibrating for quite a while so I pulled the cover today and found that the fluid was full of metal shavings, it was glittering. I also found this metal chunk in the differential so my mechanical experience tells me this is not a good thing. I am taking it apart tomorrow any tips or do's or don't? Also, what this metal chunk is and what that knurled up end is??

Door tag told me it was a 7.5 open 4:10 axle.

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: 1994 4x4 - Noisy Rear With Leaking Axle Seals

Really noisy rear with leaking axle seals. Looking to swap in a "yard" unit. Mine has 10" shoes. The door sticker says it's a code 86 rear. If I look for a ranger with a code 86, will everything be the same?

Ford Excursion :: 2005 - Loud Clunk Or Pop Noise From Under Driver And Passenger Floorboards

I have a '05 4X 6.0 PSD... that has a loud clunk or pop noise from under the drivers and passengers floorboards. I've done A LOT to try and fix this noise... and know, it's definitely due to frame twist. As I can drive straight, on flat ground and it'll never happen. On a dirt road, with stutter bumps... still, nothing. When the road is off-camber, or I have an S-Turn the CLUNK will be there, and sometimes more than once (seemingly if the load change is enough).

If I'm off-road, and the road is off-camber or has my X articulating 1-2' in either direction side to side or diagonally, the CLUNK is so annoying, so bad, I think the X is going to fall apart.

So this past weekend, I had my fiance' roll back and forth (about 20') over a small dirt embankment, while I was on my hands on knees outside next to the running board. And boy... it's a LOUD clunk, and I can feel it on my feet in the X... or if I put my hand on the frame. But, for the life of me... can't find the culprit.

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: 2004 - Rear Axle Noise When Start Moving Forward

2004 Ranger Edge 2wd 3.0L. When the truck has been sitting for a while and i start moving forward there is a very loud sound of metal on metal. Changed the diff fluid last week, used royal purple 75-140 with the friction additive. No change, tried to take rear wheels off, but the drums are stuck by the pads. I was able to get the drums off only bout an inch.

Recently, I've noticed that on hard acceleration the RPM go up but it seems sluggish on acceleration. There is also a vibration that comes from the rear and goes away when i remove my foot from the accelerator. The squeal happens between 15 and 20 mph, but goes away fairly quickly. The vibration happens around 40 or so. I am thinking rear axle bearings? But i cant get my drums off to replace the bearings.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: 2005 - Rear Axle Whine Over 25 - 70 MPH?

had a leaking rear driveshaft seal at the axle and replaced it and fluid. 75W145 full synthetic as recommended. it was changed at 128000 and I've started to get an axle whine over 25 MPH up to 65-70MPH. quites down around 80 MPH. I just checked it after 2 months (whine just started) with 133000. Any TSB. does this fall under TSB 05-23-3? Noise sounds like I've got really aggressive tires on the truck. Only have Dayton HT all season. Did not add the XL3 additive. Would this work at this juncture.

Ford Excursion :: Loud Clunk / Thump Sound Coming From Rear Of Vehicle

Our excursion usually sits unless we are towing or need to haul a group of people. The past three days my wife has been using it as a commuter. Yesterday she told me that two times at start-up she has heard a loud clunk/thump sound coming from the rear of the vehicle. At first she thought it was happening when she engaged the brake to put it in drive. Today she called me and told me the sound came just after start-up while the vehicle was warming up before the brake was applied. What this could be? I wish I would have observed it so I could give more details.

Ford F-150 (2004-2008) :: Loud Clunk / Clank From Rear If Accelerate Quickly

I drive a 2006 F-150. I'm new to the forum and already found some good info on the annoying tick coming from my 5.4.

I have recently purchased a ski boat and lately when towing my boat and coming to a stop I feel as light movement coming from the rear of the truck that feels like something slides forward slightly. When I accelerate "it" slides back and if I accelerate quickly, "it" makes a loud clank noise.

I have ruled out hitch, receiver, ball, anything from the boat/trailer etc... It is coming from the transfer case/ spare tire area under the truck and it only appears to do it (or to where it is noticeable) while towing the boat.

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: Rear Axle - Drive Shaft Not Fixed In Diff Perfectly Straight?

Today I took the bed off of my 99 ranger. I was sitting on the cab looking down at the rear axle noticed the drive shaft was not entering the rear diff perfectly straight. As I looked further into it, I noticed the distance between the rear spring on the passenger side tire, is noticeably different. To visualize it, the wheel, at the bumper side of the axle, has a shorter distance between it and the leafs than the cab side. Not massive, but a few inches, and it's noticeable now that I can stand over it. I'm beginning to be very annoyed by this truck and it's previous owners, whom I take it , scammed my brother quite well with a $5k tag for a truck with so much not right with it. It's about to become my yard art for awhile.

Ford Ranger / B-Series :: Rear End Clunk Almost Sounds Like A Wheel Is Loose

I have a noise in my rear end, if I grab the bed of the truck, and rock the body back and forth, I hear a clunk, almost sounds like a wheel is loose, but checked them, all good, also checked the U-joints, and pulled the driveshaft to grease the spindle. Thinking it could be in the third member, maybe the Differential pinion shaft, or the lock bolt......

Nissan - Sentra :: 1996 - Loud Single Clunk Coming From The Area Around Right Rear Wheel

1996 Nissan Sentra GXE, 147,000 miles. Automatic transmission. When I start moving after starting the car, I hear an ominously loud single clunk coming from the area around the right rear wheel. I start the engine, no clunk. I release the parking brake, no clunk. I put the car into gear, no clunk. I take my foot off the brake and begin to move, CLUNK! And that's the last I hear of it while I'm driving. There are no rattles, shakes, or other problems as I am driving. I can stop for a traffic light, and there's no clunk when I start moving again. Shift into reverse, and there's no clunk. Hit a pothole, nothing.

It may be worth mentioning that I have a huge hole in the right side of my muffler (seriously - I can stick a few fingers into it) which I am not going to repair. And that is because in five weeks I am going to be buying a new car. I've arranged time off from work to do all the running around from bank to dealer to insurance agent to DMV, and I'll have enough cash at the ready for a large down payment. So I am very reluctant to have any work done on this car. So what it comes down to is can I 'baby' the Sentra as much as possible and use it as little as possible over the next few weeks, or am I in danger of losing a wheel (or something) at any moment?

Expedition :: 2005 - Rear Passenger Axle Noise Down To The Right Side Of Half Shaft

My wife has been complaining about a noise from her 2005 expo.

As she drove the truck today I have narrowed the noise down to the right side of the half shaft. From looking underneath and comparing what I was seeing and hearing, the track bar is not centered. Its more in on the driver side and out on the passenger side. I had her to stand on the running board and shake the truck.

I can definitely hear a kinda cluck? It sounds like the half shaft going to the tire but at the same time the bushing on the outer tire rod end. I can't determine what it is exactly.

when you rock the truck you can definitely hear it. Its not like violent loud but i'd like to get it taken care of. I looked for some grease points but I don't see none..

2nd question for the grease points that I do see how much do I grease it? how many strokes?

Ford Excursion :: 2005 - Rear Axle Seal Leaking On Passenger Side

2005 4wd excursion. I have a leaking rear seal on passenger side.

I have the hub assembly off. I'm down to the spindle. My old seal came out in pieces. There's either a piece of the old seal or another seal on the back of the spindle.

Are there two seals? This what looks like a seal still on the spindle against the plate on the back...

Avalon 2005-12 :: Clunk From Rear Suspension In Cold Weather

I purchased the Avalon at the end of the 2012 year. It now has 16,000 miles on it. The car is garaged outside in Massachusetts. On November 10, 2012 (month after purchase) and yesterday, January 28, 2014, the car was brought back to the dealership for a rear suspension clunking noise that happens during cold weather (32 to -10 degrees Fahrenheit). Both times the mechanics say they cannot find anything wrong, nothing is loose with the suspension, and there are no recalls about it.

The best way to describe the noise is when going over potholes in cold weather, I hear a clunk from rear suspension (both left and right side) like something is loose in the trunk (trunk was completely empty yesterday). The sound is not too loud, but audible enough to notice. The rear struts perform well, and the car does not bottom out. As soon as the weather warms up, the noise goes away. It is very really annoying to hear this clunk and the dealership not be able to identify the problem.

Passat (B5) :: Clunk And Vibration Under Load - Axle Binding?

MK4/3 having axle binding problems. I installed coilovers on my wagon and when i went for a test drive i heard clunk and the car vibrates under load. Now I know the engine mount and trans mount are shot so there's a big possibility that it's causing the axle to bind.

There's no load and the car was of the ground so it doesn't vibrate that much, but if you take a close look at the boots you can see that it's not rotating evenly.

Avalon 2005-12 :: Loud Rattling Sound In The Rear End Of The Car

I just recently purchased a 2006 Avalon Touring. Its been a week now and there has been a loud rattling sound in the rear end of the car. It begins to sound on low RPM, but as soon as i hit high velocity, the loud rattling goes away. Note, sometimes the whole car feels like it would shift to the right; when making a left or right turn. Little scary feels like it's about to flip over.

Sonata NF (2006-10) :: 2008 - Axle Clunk Only Once When Turning The Wheel

I have changed my drivers side axle within a 10,000 mile period twice. I recently had my rack and pinion changed with sway bar links and front shocks. The problem existed before all of this so I know it was not a mechanics/ shop fault. I can hear my axle clunk only once when i'm turning the wheel and it only happens when I am on the brakes at the same time, if i turn with out pressure on the brakes it doesn't make a clunking sound. Every time I replace the axle the sound goes away for a couple of months than proceeds to come back. I can't pin point the problem, maybe its the hub assembly or the axle seal but none of it makes sense in my head.
