Wifes 2012 Prius V got a cracked windshield with no obvious rock or other damage. It started on the top where the glass meets the roof and grew quickly. Looks like a stress crack, you can run a pen down the crack and there is no obvious hang up where something hit the windshield. I'll have Toyota check it out later this week, but checking for statistics if others have suspect cracks or not.
View 7 RepliesI have a 2004 Prius CVT-E with 160,000 miles. It gave me the check engine lights and after I drove it for a mile, it ran out of power and wouldn't accelerate, though it kept starting. After towing it to the dealer, they said there was a "loss of communication with ECMs and RCM junction connector for J18 for communication line due to water damaged from windshield leaking and shorting connector and junction block."
There was also water damage to the carpet and headliner assembly (it was raining that day). They said that the windshield must've been installed improperly at some point, but I don't remember ever having to replace the windshield.
So is it possible that they can tell that the windshield was different from the original, and any problems with original windshields?
Last night I was driving on a country road and all the sudden, a deer came running out in front of me! Now they say to just go ahead and hit the deer, but naturally, I swerved and the car went one way, then when it came back the rear of the car swung around into a ditch. I was going about 50mph or so, and all I remember seeing was a lot of dirt and dust when the car was skidding sideways , I felt my body shift its weight and before I knew it, I seen the windshield cracking from the top due it hitting the ground. Then when the car was at rest, I was hanging upside down in the complete dark and the only light was the MFD and the speedometer. I sat there for about three seconds before taking off my seat belt and falling to the roof, and trying to find a window to crawl out of. Luckily, I escaped without any broken bones and no scratches at all. I am very impressed with the Gen. I Prius, it performed a lot better than what I thought and kept me out of harms way.
View 19 RepliesSo first day back to work after the holiday season and I got clocked with a giant rock on the highway which put a chip in my hood and then put a nice crack in my windshield. So far it hasn't spread and it's not on the driver's side so luckily it's not impairing my vision.
And, did you have the dealer do it or a windshield repair place? I'm concerned about the rain sensor.
So I purchased a 2011 Jetta SE last Saturday 6/18 mainly for my wife to drive around. It has 200 miles on it, she picks me up from work today we notice that there is a 7" crack in the windshield behind the registration and emissions stickers. It looks like something may have hit the edge of the windshield (probably a rock) and started the process. She doesn't remember anything specifically.
I drove a Mazda 3 for four years on the same roads with no damage to the windshield. The VW windshield couldn't take one rock?
So the insurance company says over 6", not repairable, I will have to pay my $500 deductible and have it replaced. I plan to call the dealer tomorrow to see what my options are, if any, besides replacing it.
I was cleaning my car this weekend and found that the rubber seals around the lower corners of my windshield were dry cracked and rotting.
Car is only 4 years old, seems unacceptable for a Lexus or any car for that matter.
In February of this year, I had a new windshield installed. Yesterday when leaving to go to work I noticed the very top part of the windshield on the driver side was cracked in a "x" shape.
I have no clue how this has happened, since I am the only driver of this car and have not had any rocks/debris hit my windshield since this was installed. I took it to the people who did the installation, and the guy looked at it and agreed this was rather odd and there was no evidence of rock or debris in the crack itself. I asked if there was a chance that it was installed incorrectly (maybe a stress crack?) or if the windshield itself may have had some sort of hairline crack prior to the installation. He said that there really is no wrong way to install a windshield and that it had to have been some sort of debris or vandalism--and the windshield was in perfect condition when installed.
I am really leaning towards the idea that this was some sort of installation error. You would think that if this was an act of vandalism, the person would have smashed the whole windshield--or at least somewhere towards the center that would force me to have it replaced. As it is now, you cannot see this crack from the inside of the car. So here are my questions:
Is there a wrong way to install a windshield that could have caused this? Or is the company just leading me on because they don't want to replace it?
If the answer to the above question is yes, should I go back and push for them to replace it?
I have the '05 V8.
The crack seems to originate at the lower right corner of the rear view mirror assembly contact point and spreads out in four opposing directions including two to the top edge of the glass. I could find zero chips on the outside of the glass at the nexus point of the crack. I also did not get hit in the windshield while driving -- not that I noticed anyway.
We went to the opera at night drove it home and noticed no damage and parked in the garage. The next day I went to the garage and noticed the crack (the cracks are about 8 inches long or so). The garage was very hot.
Is it POSSIBLE, and are there any reports of this happening, that the heat or something else caused the rearview mirror assembly to torque and crack the windshield or am I dreaming that I can blame VW and I just must have missed the crack when I drove home and it happened some other way.
I have a 2005 Camry LE 4D Sedan. Last week, we had a severe winter storm down here for around 4 days. My car was covered with ice all around for around 3 days before I cleaned up the ice with a piece of plastic scraper and the built-in heater in back windshield last Wednesday. Then I used the car for two day's daily commute and weekend shopping without seen any problem.
But this Monday morning, I found out that the back windshield was totally cracked but still in shape, fully with fine cracks all over the place. It looks just like someone used a small hammer cracked the back windshield carefully and did not break it. Then I wanted to drive to a Toyota dealership in town to have them check it out and fix it. But on the way to the dealership place, the back windshield started falling down pieces by pieces. Each piece is in size of green pea.
In one Toyota dealership, I was told that this kind of damage is not covered by Toyota warrantee. And then this was confirmed by North America Toyota Customer Service Center. I do not believe that this should be the case! It definitely caused by the bad quality of the back windshield. It should be the defect during the manufacturing of this piece of windshield. I am just out of luck and got this bad quality windshield.
I just washed my corolla today and I noticed a long black sticky piece of sealant laying on my windshield. So I looked around the edges of my rear windshield and to my surprised there were couple of cracks on the sealant. Not just cracked seal but also an inch to 3 inches of sealant are gone.

The first few times, that's what I thought it was, but it's now happened a couple of times while I wasn't moving, and today it happened while I was parked! what it is?
View 7 RepliesWe were driving on mt highway and ran over rock. Had the undercarriage checked immediately and mechanic spotted the mark inches from transmission but said all was fine. Last evening the engine began to run very rough and loud particularly when not accelerating; true even when idling/parked. Also noticing a small rattle that is infrequent and disassociated with any consistent pattern. We are in Taos Ski valley at about 8k elevation. Still have two weeks of vacation driving ahead of us.

There is no pattern to the stalling.It stalls when I start driving, after I have been driving for a long period or when I just begin driving. It stalls when I turn a corner or on the highway, when I am at a stop sign or a red light. It is baffling. My mechanic has tried a number of solutions, including replacing the crankshaft sensor, however, it still stalls.
View 2 RepliesI drive a 2004 Jeep Liberty which currently has about 67,000 miles on it and is in relatively good shape. For a while now I've been noticing that my CEL will come on randomly while I'm driving and flash 10 times before stopping for an indeterminate time. At the time it occurs I could be doing 70 on an interstate or 35 on a city road, doesn't seem to matter. I also don't notice anything else with the car at the time. No jurking, no sounds, no nothing - seems to be running fine. I've tried taking it in to shops after I've seen it but they are never able to pull anything off of the error codes. I've now been driving with this phenomenon for over 5 years so whatever it is seems to not have been as serious as I would have expected but I do think its starting to happen more often now than it used to.
When I try and manually pull codes I get the "donE" screen with a random number that flashes super quick before disappearing. Had to use my phones slomo mode to even try and capture it. it seems to just be a number "867588". Quick video showing what I mean .....
I will be getting the DDM HID kit and wondering about the necessity for a wiring harness as it seems many are running without it. I am concerned the not having it will somehow damage the car (based on researching HID's in general) but loving the plug and play idea of running without one.
View 2 RepliesWell I was afraid this was going to happen. About a two years ago, several months after I replaced the heads on the van that at the time was my brothers, the ignored a squeaking pulley. One day that pulley seized and broke the belt. My brother was not watching the gauges closely, and didn't realize anything was wrong other than the clunk noise that happened when the belt was thrown. That was until he went to turn, and the power steering was gone. He looked at the gauges at that point, and the heat was pegged out on the gauge. So he pulled it over and shut it down. I came and towed him to a shop where it could be fixed.
But I fully understand that when an engine gets overheated, especially if the heat build up was rapid, the heads warp. I also understand that the head gasket will usually seal anyway, so the failure does not often happen at the time of the overheat.
Well, it finally let go the other day. Started noticing a rough idle and an obvious misfire. Removed the cap and there is a steady stream of small bubbles when the engine is running. There is also more corrosion than should be in the cooling system for how recently the coolant was replaced.
It is not overheating right now, but isn't this a lovely time for a major problem to occur. Anyway, I took it in, and hopefully they will have it finished before I need it again. My van performs truck roles, including towing and all of my fathers trucks are either too small or on deaths door. I'm sure it would drive most of you nuts anyway, but do not ignore squeaking pulleys.
I just acquired a 2006 Prius with 96000 miles. My local service station said he did not want to change the transaxle fluid. He said he had changed it for someone and the car stopped working. My son the mechanical engineer said there is a risk that changing the fluid can dislodge particles that were not a problem and cause a problem. I don't drive many miles -maybe 3000 per year, so car will be 19 years old by the time I get over 130,000 miles. So I am not looking for the transaxle to last 200,000 miles or so.

View 7 Replies No one is taking the responsibility for the water in my transmission. I brought it to sunrise toyota because the car was making a noise - new tires were put on before they even diagnosed my car, told me to take it home it can not be fixed it has water damage from the storm.. I was not in Storm Sandy but they insisted I was. Took it to another shop and it was agreed that yes there is water damage but no one knows how it got there.
Insurance don't want to hear about it, neither does Toyota motors. They insist my insurance cover it and i am told it should be under warrantee. Who stands behind the consumer??? My car is 2 yrs old and brought it in for a noise and then told to take it out of the shop because they don't want to deal with it.
My car is freaken useless now with new 600 plus tires and Its not drivable..and worse now because all the lights are going on saying there's a problem with ABS and slippery roads and the brakes go to the floor.
Alright, so we had an unfortunate run-in with a parking space and I ripped the front under-tray off, not sure what it's actually called. I still have it, the eyes are just ripped out.
But that's not my main issue. The main issue is that the A/C only blows hot now. I know you can sometimes kill a condenser, because road debris will puncture it, but how do you know for sure what's wrong? I'm good with my hands and not afraid to take my car apart, I'm just wanting to be sure before I go ordering parts. I have the relevant sections of the repair manual, but if it's the ES18 compressor or something, how would I know? And is there any way to know without taking the bumper off?
I'll also need a source for ND OIL 11..
