Prius V :: Intermittent Vibration / Shuddering Like A Flat Tyre
Oct 10, 2014
In the past month I have had 4 instances (approx. once per week) of vehicle vibration/shuddering. The first time I thought for sure I had a flat tire and pulled over immediately and had a look at my tires. All was fine and I continued to drive with no further vibration.
My Prius v ( lowercase v for the Prius v wagon ) has 50,000 kilometers. Has had all required service at our local Toyota dealer. It has always been a pleasure to drive, smooth and quiet. Has only been on paved roads and the tires are in excellent condition.

I'm getting an erroneous intermittent "Flat Tyre" warning on one of the 4 corners. Usually only happens after about 10-15 minutes of highway driving. I haven't had the problem on city driving. Pressure is good on the "faulty" corner. After resetting the tire pressures and the TPMS relearning, everything is then fine again . . . only to return the next time I'm on the highway.

I've been having problem with my 04 V8's TPMS. Every few hours, i get a message of Flat Tyre and it will come and go.. took it into dealer third time today, left the car there for 4 hours and they call me back said "Everything is normal" ... They can't reproduce the problem, even thought I have show them the video.

I have a 2004 V8 with 104,000 miles. For the last two weeks every time I go out in the morning a few miles from home the tire pressure monitor tells me I have a flat tyre. This warning light goes off when I continue to drive. This does not happen every day but I have noted this happen when it rainy or is particularly humid.

Recently replaced the front tire pressure monitor sensors from my '04 T V8. Since then the readings are fine with the only exception that I do get the "FLAT TYRE" warning a few minutes after I start my trip and for about 2-3 minutes until it goes off again. Shall I take it back to the dealer for reprogramming, is it something else I should look for...

My 2004 V-8 Touareg has 19000 miles. The other day I started receiving "Flat Tyre" warnings on the MFD. The warning only appears when I accellerate to about 50 mph. It disappears when I come to a stop. The air pressure in all tires remains consistent (no leaks) and resetting the TPMS system hasn't corrected the problem. What's causing this.

I've got an '04 Touareg V8, and i am getting "Defective Wheel on Board" and "Flat Tyre" messages in the MF1 display (with associated annoying-beeping). I am assuming that it's time to replace one or more of the TPMS sensors.
- My understanding is that one cannot simply replace the batteries, the entire sensor needs replacing.
- I assume all 4 need to be replaced as a sat.

My 2010 Prius has starting to shudder and vibrate a bit on occasion when starting to accelerate as in stop and go traffic. It seems to happen mainly when the electric charge is low and the engine is on charging the battery and then I start to accelerate at the same time. It goes away once the speed in over 10mph. It happens occasionally, not every time. Never used to do this. Car has about 160k miles. Could it be a problem with the transmission device?

I have a 2008 toyora prius with 75423mi on it, was purchased with 70000mi two or three months ago. I have had no problems with this vehicle until recently. Being a prius newbie, I decided to ask here. When sitting parked on a slight slope earlier with the car running, radio running, and phone plugged in for an extended amount of time, I received an error on my display stating smething along the lines of "there is an abnormality with the p transmission mechanism, please part the car on a flat surface and engage the parking break completely" paired with a red triangle on the dash. I immediately moved the car to flat ground and engaged the parking break. The car turns one, shifts fine, and acts just as normal as prior. Is there anything I should be worried about? The car is still under toyota warrenty and is due an oil change now. Any clue what the cause of this was and if it will be reoccuring?

Over the past few months I've noticed that my truck has a very intermittent shudder under mild acceleration. If I accelerated more during the shudder it seemed to disappear until I let off the peddle a little. When it happens the truck doesn't seem to be lacking power and the engine throws no codes. It happened again today right as I had stopped at a red light. I noticed that it was shuddering at idle too. I shut the truck off at the intersection and the shudder was gone once restarted. What it may be?

My son just changed my oil, radiator fluid & transmission fluid on my 2007 Prius with 125,000 miles. Now it makes a fairly quiet, intermittent pumping or quiet growling/humming noise. A vibration can be felt near the driver's left foot when the noise is heard. The noise starts about a minute or two after starting the car & goes on & off, about every 30 seconds, for the entire time the car is running or driving. The car seems to drive normally, although I've only driven it a few miles, a few times. The only unusual dash light is the "maintenance required" indicator which has been on since before the fluid changes.

In my 2006 Prius, I just started noticing this recently, but whenever I turn my steering wheel, it makes a weird noise and I can feel something going on through the steering wheel. It doesn't impede my steering, the car steers just fine... It's just an add sound, I don't want to say a cracking sound... but it kind of is? I don't know. I'll have to put a video of it up. & it doesn't matter which way I turn it, it still makes the weird sound and the intermittent vibration... I know it has E-steering and occasionally you can here the motor whirring when you turn it but this is different, it's a loud... popping noise is the word for it! Popping, and I can feel it when it pops through the steering wheel. Again, it doesn't impede the steering ability at all, but something isn't right I'm sure... Or maybe it's normal.

I leased a 2015 Honda CR-V AWD LX on March 11, 2015. The following day I noticed a rough vibration/shuddering/chattering that appeared to be coming from the transmission when the rpms ranged between 1,000 and 2,000. The roughness was evident at any speed (mpgs) when the tachometer reading was between the previously stated range. The service technician reported feeling the same roughness, but noted that the problem was characteristic of the CRV with a CVT transmission. On Tuesday March 17, I went back to the dealer and discussed the problem with the service manager. He also stated that he was aware of that particular problem and that it was peculiar to the 2015 CRV with the CVT transmission. He took my car for a test drive and admitted feeling the chattering. It was also evident to me as I sat in the passenger’s seat. He then took out another new CRV and it too exhibited the same characteristics.

My 2000 f250 4x4 V10 5spd manual with LSD and 63k mi gets an intermittent but very strong vibration like a shuddering, growling, rumbling in 2WD. The 1st time it only lasted about 1 second. It had been making a swooshing noise that sounded like front left wheel bearing for several thousand miles before this, so i replaced bearing assembly even though it turned smoothly.
After that, It still made the exact same swooshing noise and after a couple miles at 45mph, it had the strong vibration/shudder that lasted about 3 seconds. I stopped and locked the hubs manually. The vibration happened again in a couple miles, so seems like it's not the needle bearings in front stub shafts or locking hubs. On that last occurrence, the vibe went on for 5 seconds, felt the same with clutch in, and went away only after truck slowed down to nearly a stop. I've driven it about 6 mi total since the 1st occurrence.
Front right Wheel bearings feel smooth. I unbolted the driveshaft support bearing and it spins smoothly. The front u-joint maybe had a tiny bit of play, all bolts tight. I didn't check the nuts for yokes, but it didn't look like yokes had any play. Drive shaft slip joint moves smoothly. No up-down play at pinion shaft input into rear diff and output from transfer case. Rear diff oil was full with a little bit of silvery sludge on the magnetic filler plug, maybe 1/10 of a cc, no metals slivers or chunks. I raised the rear wheels and ran 5th gear 2WD at idle (~30mph) and touched a 4' listening stick to the drivetrain components.
The only odd sounds were from the rear differential. It sounded like a bad bearing with random crunches and thuds mixed in with the normal whirring. Crunches and thuds were loudest at front of diff housing. I blocked one wheel and repeated in 3rd gear. You could hear noise like gears meshing (noisy spider gears? maybe was LSD clutches?). The differential was warm after 5-10 minutes, with the hottest area being about 3" from the front of diff, just before the housing widens.
So, I'm guessing the pinion bearing is bad and the intermittent shudder is the bearing race spinning in the case when bearing seizes.

Since a while I'm getting a vibration.... when going on the highway, the vibration is NOT there initially. Then it gradually get stronger and stronger as distance goes on, but same speed.
Hitting the brakes make the pedal vibrate sometime, but fade out. then the vibration is gone for a bit, and come back slowly.
Note that this is at a constant 100km/h, not increasing speed. I ruled out the wheel balance due to the fact that it's not constant. Everything seems to be tight, couln't feel any movement in anything.
Brake on the left side is way hotter than the right side, so I do suspect that the right side do not work correctly.
Sometime the wheel also kick on the left a bit while braking. I do not know if it's 2 problems or a single one. At last wheel swap, the calipers seemed to slide correctly.
Also, I think I have air in the brake line, as the pedal is too smooshy for my taste, and I can't seems to be able to make the abs kick in (but good tires, so might be the reason?)
Note: top plates on the front suspension seems to have a bit of play, but I believe it have no effect on this issue.
The winter tires, on separate rims, also do the same thing. It seems to get worse as time goes by.

I have a '10 with only 4k miles, driven very little. Car might sit for three weeks and sometimes, not always, car won't start, dead battery. I have checked starting voltage and battery. Both check good, (after i have recharged battery, of course). Is this normal? I certainly hope not.

I have a vibration that comes and goes at a regular interval. Starts at about 60+ MPH on up. Most apparent between 70 & 75 MPH. The steering wheel will visibly vibrate for about 3 seconds and become completely smooth for 1 to 2 seconds. This vibration interval repeats over and over, in Drive or Neutral. I have replaced both outer tie rod ends, driver side wheel bearing, L & R stabilizer bars, rotors, pads and calipers. Passenger side motor mount which was visibly broken, others all ok. Finally, I just replaced both axle shafts with brand new ones. Front tires are in balance and round! At lower speeds, 60 and below it is smooth as silk. Bumps sound good, no rattle noises or loose sounds. No pulling left or right.

After a couple thousand miles I have this intermittent vibration in what feels like the rear end being I can't feel anything in the wheel. It vibrates for a few seconds, goes away. Then vibrates for a few seconds and goes away. But even that timing isn't consistent. It could be good for a minute, then go back to every 3 seconds.
I'm way too busy to bring the car in so 2k later during the first oil change, I get the typical "dealer can't replicate". I was expecting it after I told them I do 75-80mph and they replied with "Well we can't drive that fast".
They make another appointment to have it in so they can start it cold (keep in mind I already told them it doesn't matter if it's cold as they tried to spew some BS about how the tires might have developed a flat spot overnight...) and I get a 2.0 Sport to use for the day and it does the same thing!
For anyone asking if it's the roads, it's not. My commute is 45 miles, 40 miles on the freeway at 75-80mph and half of that is on brand new concrete. I know, the new concrete could be bad but my 2011 GLS didn't do it! My wife's 2003 Saturn Ion 1 doesn't do it. My 2005 Impala didn't do it! So here I sit with a brand new Sonata that I love except for this vibration and I can't find anything online.

I have an intermittent rattle sound which comes from behind the dash. It just seems to come and go, and I can't find any pattern as to when it happens. It can happen while driving or standing still. Of course, it NEVER happens when the car is at the dealership.
It sounds like a marble is back there vibrating (others have discribed this as well). I can't be sure where it is coming from, but perhaps from behind the instruments?
Others have reported it, but say only that they "turn up the radio". Sometimes I have my wife and kids in the car, so turning up the radio is just not an option. I want it fixed! What it could be???

I've checked the wheel bearings, lug nuts and wheel balance. Sometimes the car will shimmy or vibrate not in the steering wheel and not all the time. It will vibrate for a day or two, then nothing, then vibrate again. It was not vibrating today, then I took some curves hard at 35 mph or so and it started a medium level vibration. This vibration started a day or two after the ABS, traction control, and check engine lights came on while nearly completing a 10 hour drive. I have described this to a number of mechanics and the fact that the vibration goes away has them stumped.

I just totally re-built the rear brakes in my 93 Ranger 2wd. Now its seems I have this 'intermittent vibration' between 90 to 105 km/h.
