Have a 2012 prius v 3 and randomly when the car is shut off I notice a fan of some sort that appears to be running and the noise appears to be coming from the rear of the car. This doesn't happen right after the car is shut off. If the car is off and come back to it 2 hours later you hear the fan going. In order to rectify, what I do is turn the car on (not accessory mode), and shut back off. The fan stops.
View 5 RepliesOn cold starts the engine makes a continual squeal. Within minutes if I drive it or simply rev the engine a few times the sound is gone and the engine again sounds glorious. If I spray the belt with water the sound immediately ends. I have replaced the water pump, belt tensioner roller, idler rollers and of course the belt. All to no avail. 2005 Porsche 911...
View 4 RepliesI have a 2008 Mitsubishi Endeavor with 308,000 miles on it and am on the return portion of a road trip with 700 miles to go and my car is driving terribly. I had my oil changed today and they used a high mileage oil, said that my filters were fine and I needed to do a tranny and power steering flush which I said I would do once I got home. My service engine soon light has been on and every so often while idling or slowing down my car would putter and act as if it would bail out but never actually die. When I ran the computer it said it was an issue with the o2 sensor but after put a fuel cleaner in the system, it always felt better.
Not today I drove about 900 miles Saturday, did a little bit of in town driving Sunday and it started to putter while idling but what was new was the surging during acceleration and the continual puttering or bumpy ride feeling when I'm at high speeds and 2000 - 3000 rpms. I'm in the middle of nowhere and after talking to Autozone, my mechanics and trying to self diagnosis online, I've been told that I need to indure the bumpy ride to get home but when I do, will need to figure out what with the o2 sensor needs fixing or Ill need new spark plugs or a new fuel pump. all that sounds good but the way my car is puttering feels terrible! there's no odor, leaks or sound ... it just feels like I'm going 80 miles an hour but I'm going to stall out at the same time.
I recently had new brake pads put on my van. Right before the pad replacement, I noticed a slight thumping sensation under my foot when I would decelerate, but before applying the brakes.
Now, and each day continuing to worsen, the thumping is almost constant, and more prominent when I am slowing down, and when I am turning to the right (less noticeable when I turn left). My steering wheel also starting to shake heavily. Today the engine light came on.
I have a 2006 Honda Odyssey with about 65k miles on it. The brakes were replaced 3 weeks ago, and then I took it into a local tire shop for an oil change/inspection. They did not note a single thing. I did ask them how the struts were looking and they said they were fine. This past summer when I had to have a flat repair done at Les Schwabs, they told me I needed new brakes, rotors and struts.
I could not afford that, so my father in law replaced my brake pads with ceramic ones, and the rotors look fine. So when I was told by the most recent shop that my struts were fine, I assumed something else was happening, but have not taken it to my local shop yet. I guess I am looking for a heads up because this could not come at a worse time financially.
Two things I have just noticed on my '09 with aprox. 120,000 miles.
Starting at about 45 mph, I am getting a humming noise
Doesn't get louder as speed goes up either, stays the same 45-75 mph
Have Bridgestone Ecopia EP422 tires, did rotation, noise did not change location
Noise does go away gradually when slowing down to a stop (after I have reached 45)
I am deaf on my left side, this is hard to tell where it is coming from
Second is this really odd brake pedal clink / pop noise. When brake pedal is depressed fully to the floor, car ON or OFF, there is a clunk

Brake pads / rotors are like new, plenty of life on them. I did have the inverter pump replaced per the recall (I read somewhere this could be related?)

My girlfriend and I just bought a 2011 a few weeks ago. We test drove it a couple times ourselves, and had our mechanic take a look at it and drive it also. Everything looked and sounded good. Not sure how much it matters, but it's a Certified Used as well.
A couple days ago, returning from a 45-minute drive which included some short stretches of gravel road, I noticed an oscillating sound. It's definitely not a noise that was there when we bought the car. Unfortunately, my cell is apparently bad at capturing audio, so hopefully my description will be enough.
The noise is very faint, almost inaudible, at low speeds. Between 30 and 35 mph it gets much louder, peaking at about 33. There's some vibration through the accelerator pedal also. Above 35, it fades pretty quickly and I can't really hear it at 50. The sound itself is 3 beats on, 1 beat off, about every second. There's a slight difference in pitch between each beat.
If that isn't enough to go on, let me know and I'll give the recording another shot and upload it if the noise is audible.
What is that noise the Prius makes after it is shut down? I'm sure it is suppose to do what it is suppose to do, I'm just curious what the noise is.
View 2 RepliesI have a brand new 2013 Prius III with a little over a hundred miles on it now. I started to notice that every time I sit or standup to get out I hear a noise from the rear of the car. When I drive it normally, I don't really hear any trouble with the suspension or brakes. This sound happens before I even power up the car.
View 9 Replies2006 Prius, 115,000 Miles, Start battery just replaced after 9 years, drive battery original. Noticed a new noise, like a chirping noise, similar to the brake noise when you press the brake peddle hard and they chirp. Was told this is normal and was some pump noise.
This moving noise appears at 27-28 MPH. It appears generally on almost flat roads. It appears with the engine is running @ 1184 RPM + or -, 0 RPM when the electric motor is moving the Prius/Gas engine off, cruise control on or off.
Appears to be coming from the front of the car. I thought it might be a nail in the tires, or wheel bearings, but no nails are found and the tries are balanced and rotated every 5,000 Miles.
Just had a Toyota mechanic take a ride, and he thought it sounds like the HV system trying to maintain the speed, sort of adding and reducing tork. At least that was what I gathered from his comments, but said its safe to drive. Another noise, like engine noises associated with the Prius that we all have accepted as part of this type Hybrid system.
Just put my car in for it's first year's service(20,000 km). I made an observation to the service tech that during warm weather, there is a noticeable rattling whirring sound.
During testing, they were able to compare my car with another and confirmed the noise to be from the air-con compressor.
Well, even a supposed Toyota specialist shop couldn't figure it out.

The road by my house is being repaved, as such, it's really chewed up, and when driving over it, it truly feels like the whole front end of the Prius is going to fall off. It's like the loud, dull, clanging of metal bars.
After I brake and partially release the brake pedal (not completely letting off) so I can cruise a little further, sometimes I have heard a quick three raps or thumps. Normal?
View 5 RepliesMy 2005 Prius with 170k miles started making a whining noise after the car is warmed up. It is noticeable from about 30 mph, but mostly at higher speeds. When you take your foot off the accelerator the whining stops. It has gotten a bit louder over the past several weeks. I took it to a Toyota dealership and they want to replace the transmission because they believe it is a failure of the transmission's 2nd stage.
View 3 RepliesMy 2007 with 155,000 mi started making a strange noise - It is also burning oil. I am pretty sure it is not valves - it sounds like hanging silverware clanking together in the wind. The sound might be a bad water pump or a loose timing chain. That is what I would picture those sounding like. It would seem like the water pump is pretty easy to replace.
View 8 RepliesI am experiencing a fan noise that precedes the ICE during morning startup. It sounds like a model airplane with a cheap, buzzy propeller. It is not the cabin blower and it comes from the front of the car. It goes for about 10sec and then the ICE fires up, drowning out the fan noise, which I presume fades out. And then I don't hear it again when the ICE shuts off. I also don't hear it at a stop light or subsequent restarts. Seemingly, it only does it after it has sat overnight.
It wasn't always like this. Nothing has changed in my routine. Build date Sep 09. 10000km.
I just bought a new set of the Hankook 727 195/60/R15 tires from TireRack installed yesterday (with an alignment as well).
I immediately noticed that when I make turns now, I get this "squishy" feeling from the rear end, like the car is floating its way through the turn. For a good half-second, the rear end just keeps moving to the side. Its very disconcerting. Its the same feeling I had several months ago when I got a nail in one of the Conti's before the tire went completely flat.
2005 Prius. 190k miles. In San Diego, so hot summers...not Phoenix hot...90s. Mild winters. No san or salt on roads.
5k oil and filter regularly. Got new HV battery at 142k. Changed the coolant switching valve done . Coolant pump changed under Recall. Steering midshaft done. Front pads replaced at 120k. Rear shoes getting very close to replacement. Trans fluid change at 120k per manual and at 190k. Plugs at 120k.
Two new issues: when coasting in N, pretty quiet. Driving or coasting in D, there is a growl. At 35-40 mph, wind noise masks it. Frequency increases with speed. It isn't getting worse. And no better after the transaxle fluid change. Can't be CV or bearings because it only happens when in motion in D. No lights on MFD. I have not looked for codes.
I have a 2004 Prius that I bought 8 months ago, my Prius has 110k miles on it and I haven't done any maintenance since I bought the car , I have learned recently about the inspection mode , so I used the inspection mode to record the noise of the car while idling .It sounds like a diesel to me.
View 7 RepliesMy mom has a c-3, today while she was out, pulled out of a parking lot at slow speed, went to stop at the traffic light and all she hear was a 'grinding' noise and had no brakes. Luckily she has thinking ability and used the parking brake to stop. She pulled off when able but then the brakes were fine. I'm a gen III driver.

View 7 RepliesI have a 2013 Prius with 41K Miles. When I turn on the car I can hear the Air Conditioner Fan (my opinion) a bit louder than normal. I know it's the A/C Fan because when I turn off the A/C the sound goes away. It makes a weird Zoom sound, but louder than my previous cars and my wife's car.
