On a couple/few occasions, my 2012 Prius II has started rapping at start up. The motor will turn on but as soon as the gas motor kicks on there is a pronounced rapping noise emanating from it. It only lasts for a couple of seconds and then stops. It did it once after having sat for about a week but now it did it after sitting for about a day and a half.
View 1 RepliesI have an 01 passat 1.8 turbo, I have been having a loud rapping noise coming from the top of the engine. Started about 8 months ago when you turned on the engine and would immediately go away. Then it continued stopping at 500 rpms then at idle and now it continues up to 2000 rpm. I have spoken to the local vw dealer twice now, first they claimed it was the timing belt and tensioner, replaced it, still made the noise. Next was told that there are two screens that could be clogged, one in the oil pan, which is impossible to get at without pulling the engine, and the other screen was located under the valve cover, pulled it off and found no screen, called vw and was told no screen in my model.
I noticed a chain in the inside end of the valves, when the engine runs it is loud and comes from the area of theat chain, the chain appears in fine shape, tight, there is no signs of metal shavings or anywhere that parts may be hitting. The valves were all is good shape. The car runs fine and the gas mileage has not been effected at all. No oil leaks or idiot lights coming on. The car sounds like a diesel on alot of steroids. It is so loud and i fear something is going to blow on it.
When I start my car in HV mode (not enough juice to drive in EV mode), I've noticed this noise sounding like the motor is starting. The noise lasts about 15 seconds and quiets down. When the noise is ongoing, the EV and ECO sign on the instrument panel would only show a silhouette (it doesn't light up to show the EV or ECO). Once it quiets down, the "EV" sign lights up.
I dont think this has to do with warming up the car because it's 85F outside where it's parked.
I came downstairs to my Prius v with my kids and our laundry to find a completely dead car. I couldn't open the trunk. Luckily the doors were already unlocked. The power button doesn't work at all. No lights no nothing. It is DEAD. Is it possible the battery discharged and I need a jump? Or is this more serious and I need to get it towed to the dealer?
View 5 RepliesJust got the 2012 Prius in June and have put around 12,500 miles on it. I have loved the car so much but last Wednesday night I came out of work and the car would not start. Thinking maybe it was just the 12v battery I called Toyota care. After attempting to have it jumped it still would not start. It was towed to the dealership located in Carlstadt, NJ. It has been over a week now and they still have not been able to fix it! They say they have run a diagnostic test on it and nothing comes back fine but they still can’t get it on. They say they are now testing each wire individually.

after a cold soak, the gas engine starts, but its very shaky, almost like a miss-fire. And at about 10-20mph when you go to accelerate lightly, to make the gas engine start, it starts vibrating again. but if you give it more gas, it smoothens out. Still sounds like a misfire to me...
But, there are no codes.
The dealer replaced all 4 injectors, performed a throttle body service, and an EFI Service, includes, fuel system cleaning, tank additive.
they told me the injectors for #1 and # 2 where not performing correctly and that they needed to be replaced. after opening a case with the infamous TAS (Toyota tech support)..
A few seconds after the PiP is turned on and I start moving, it gives a little beep.
It's not the doors locking because that happens a few seconds later when I speed up.

View 8 RepliesIt takes almost 10 seconds for the AC to come on in my PIP when I first start the car. Is this normal?
Sometimes, if the AC has just been running, it will come back on in just 2-3 seconds.
While i'm driving the engine I think will shake or jump for a while then stop. Or when i'm at a red light and stopped.
View 4 RepliesTurning the fan knob yields no results. The AC compressor does kick in as I can feel it when I turn it on when idling, so the knob appears to work. The blower does not move air.
I checked the fuse below the steering wheel and the fuse makes a complete circuit although the edge looks a bit darkened. Other fuses from working devices look the same and I took a spare 10A fuse from the designated area and inserted into the blower motor fuse location - still nothing.
I will also inspect the relays/fuses in the engine compartment to see if anything in there looks blown that's related to the blower motor. Hopefully it will be something simple, but probably not...
I will need to take it in to get it looked at and fixed, and this is probably not under warranty since vehicle has 56k miles... while I'm there I'll have a transmission fluid exchange done as well and I was planning on getting some body work done.
My bumper was torn off from the fact that it sits low enough that sometimes it would go over the parking stump. Well, it eventually got caught really bad and tore it off. Now the tab where the screw goes to secure the bumper has sheared off so it just hangs. Also, the tearing action from the parking stump caused the inner fender to come off and rub against my tire while driving, tearing it into shreds from the friction.
I have a vague memory that the PiP will start its petrol engine every XXX miles just for a maintenance warm up if it has not been used for that mileage. An engine start will reset that mileage back to zero and start recounting its EV miles until that limit is reached again. What is that limit?
View 19 RepliesAfter about a min once bluetooth connects it fails. In setup under bluetooth it says it's off and pushing it does nothing. My phone shows bluetooth on and still paired. If I was talking to someone call does not get dropped but I have to pick up my phone and turn off bluetooth so I can hear them on phone speaker.
View 5 RepliesOccasionally, right after I start the car, the HDD display screen will be dark for a minute or two, and then display the map. I can go to the other screens, like Audio or the setup screens, but the map and the backup camera screens are dark. The still-functional buttons are responsive as usual (no delays/hangs). When the map finally "wakes up", it behaves normally. I don't have to do anything other than wait for it to wake up. It does this about 10% of the time. I have tried to correlate this to something, but it seems totally random.
View 4 RepliesDue to a failed rear differential pump motor (I believe that is the proper name) my car has been driving approx 6,000 miles stuck in 4WD. Long story how that was discovered, but that was verified by the Honda dealers repair shop. My feeling is that may have caused major issues that will creep up down the road. Short term my gas mileage suffered, and likely the tires are not wearing properly.

View 3 RepliesMy wife has a 2012 Golf TDI. So far it's been great. Yesterday her sunroof got stuck. The motor sounds like it is grinding and won't catch. Tried to manually close the sunroof with no luck.
Took it to the dealer today. They said if it's due to sticks or leaves it is not a warranty issue. I highly doubt that's the case. My wife did say, that the sunroof did just open on it's own the other day while driving. Don't know if that's related.
Last night when I went out into the garage, I heard the sound of a small, lower RPM electric motor. After walking around a bit, I found it coming from the underside of the back of the Camry. I got in and turned the key to the "on" position and it went away. The car had been parked for about 5-6 hours. I've never heard this noise before.
View 6 RepliesI've noticed lately that my mileage and performance of my 2012 GLS has gone down. I can hear a "clicking" sound from the right side of the motor when the engine is slightly under load almost like a cam shaft that's operating without oil. I've done all the obvious things like check fluid levels and the such. My car has about 130,000km or 80000 miles on it.

Running 89 Sunoco fuel for two fill ups in a row and I have the 89 Performance tune loaded. It would not surprise me if the Gas station is selling 87 for the 89 Price!
