Prius Plug-in 2012-15 :: How To Cause The EV Miles To Deplete

Mar 7, 2012

How to travel at freeway speeds in a Prius PHV and cause the EV miles to deplete?

To explain, I regularly travel between two homes with charging capabilities. One is three miles from the highway, the other one mile. If I use EV driving to and from the highway, and travel on the highway in HV above 65 MPH, I arrive at the other destination with about 10 miles of unused EV mile capability. I would like to use this extra electricity to improve my HV mileage.

Prius Plug-in 2012-15 :: EV Miles Keeps Dropping

I am very disappointed with my Toyota Plug-in because I have only had it 2 months and have 1400 miles on car. When I first charged it up with the 110 volt charger supplied with the car, I got 13.5 miles to use up before the car went off battery. Then on recharges, every two or three times when the battery recharged the usable mileage dropped by a 1/10 a point. I now have only 9.5 miles to use before I go off battery. When I first got the car I could go to work and have 3 miles extra to go home on. Now I cannot get all the way to work. I wonder how low it is going to go? I took it into Gladstone Toyota and had the service department look at it. They said after they recharged it and found it to be only 9.5 and that there is nothing they can do unless the red warning light comes on saying that the battery is defective. I asked them how low the battery would go and still considered normal, and they said they did not know. So I guess I will keep loosing free electric miles.

My getting progressive lower usable mileage has nothing to do with my driving habits as they have been the same since I started driving the car.

Prius Plug-in 2012-15 :: Expected Average Miles Between Fill Ups?

On average, how many miles do you average between fill ups. I understand that this is all dependent on everyone's respective commutes, road conditions, ability to charge at work, etc., but i'm interested to know what you all do on average.

I'm still on my first tank and have 905 miles with one bar left on my tank.

Prius Plug-in 2012-15 :: Switch To HV Mode Still Draws Down EV Miles

When in EV mode, there are times that I approach a hill where I want to be in pure HV mode, so I switch to HV just before reaching the hill, and the system appears to switch over. However, the EV miles continue to drop as I proceed up the hill. Is this normal, or should I be switching much earlier?

Prius Plug-in 2012-15 :: Higher Than Normal EV Miles After Charging

My wife and I have 2013 PIP (His and Hers) and we compete for highest EV miles. Her car has had consistently recharged with 14- 15 estimated EV miles. This morning she called me and said as she left the garage she noticed that EV miles were 18.4. I thought wow wish mine did that. We just finished charging hers again and I went out to verify and I was blown away when I saw 20.9 EV miles. This can't be correct, what could be happening?

Prius Plug-in 2012-15 :: EV Miles Counted As HV After EV Mode Is Depleted

Ok, I know it's a confusing post title. Bear with me the steps to reproduce:

Deplete all EV range and Prius goes into HV mode

After engine warms up, skillful use of the accelerator can keep the system in "EV" mode by not going to the RIGHT of the throttle indicator. I have been able to drive a few miles in HV mode, but only using EV without the ICE firing up.

What I noticed is that those pseudo EV miles are counted against the HV range and NOT the EV range. I worked hard to get that extra mile of EV. It would be nice if it didn't count against HV!

Prius Plug-in 2012-15 :: How Accurate Is The Estimated Miles Left In Tank

I was wondering how accurate the estimated miles in the tank is? For the next two days I will have a 204 mile commute. The Prius estimates I have 210 miles left. Should I be able to make it?

Prius Plug-in 2012-15 :: Miles To Empty Failing When Driving In EV Mode With ICE Off?

As I was trying to use up as much E10 before refueling with E0 I was watching the miles to empty and noticed what seems strange, to me. When driving in EV mode, with the ICE off the miles to empty kept falling! Apparently miles to empty somehow includes EV miles. So I checked the MTE both before and after charging and saw no change which indicates EV miles don't count. So now I would like to know what does MTE mean?

Prius Plug-in 2012-15 :: Fuel Gauge Started Blinking And Miles To Empty Reading Pretty Low

I have had my PIP for just about one month now and I have only filled up twice. This car is awesome! I noticed when I filled up the last few times that the last block on the fuel gauge started blinking and my miles to empty reading was pretty low. However, when I filled up the tank, it only took around 9,2 gallons. Doesn't this car have a 10.6 gallon tank?

Prius (2010-12) :: How To Deplete Battery If It Is Only Allowed To Vary Between 60 And 80%

On the battery level gauge, it generally varies between two bars on the graph up to one bar from the top. I've read that this variance indicates 60% charge at the two bars and 80% charge at the one bar from the top position. So the battery is only depleted to 60%, then the ICE comes on and charges the battery. My confusion comes from several posts that say it's bad to deplete the battery and I agree that it's bad, but how do you deplete the battery if it is only allowed to vary between 60 and 80%?

Prius Plug-in 2012-15 :: Scheduled Timer For Plug-in Charge Only Shows Finish Time?

After my 25k service it seems the timer scheduler when the square button is pressed/held flashes at 7am. When i press the H button the hour advances to 12am then closes. I want to start the charge at 12am and finish at 5AM. The timer windows closes when i move the finish hour to 12am and then my regular clock hour changes. It used to be when i pressed/held the timer button the start time would show at 12 am and after setting it would go to the finish hour.

Prius Plug-in 2012-15 :: PiP Vs V5?

I am about to finish up my graduate studies here in Ohio, after which, my wife and I will be headed back to California. We are in desperate need of a second car, but have decided to wait until we move to get one. My wonderful in laws have said that they are willing to split the cost of a new car with us. With that said, we have already decided that we want to get a Prius, but we can't decide which one. We both really like the V. We love how roomy the car is. This is very important to us because we are going to start a family soon. However, we also like the regular Prius and the PiP. I really like the PiP but am a little concerned about the new batteries, and I am not sure that I want to pay the early adapter premium assuming one is even available. But, only paying half for a PiP sounds rather tempting. Considering all that I just said, if you were in my shoes what car would you get and why?

Prius Plug-in 2012-15 :: While Gliding ICS Goes Off

New to the Prius family. Bought a 2014 PIP advanced last week strictly as an economic play. Am noob when it comes to driving techniques, currently average 72 mpg on 90 mi. trips with one charge, so doing better than I expected. I did read up on the Pulse and Glide techniques for the standard Prius and the 'verification' of the glide portion for those is the lack of any power arrows emanating from either the ICS , MG2 or battery on the MID. I have been unable to replicate this on the PIP. In other words, when I am 'gliding' on my PIP, the ICS is off but there always seems to be a green charge indicator flowing back to the batteries from the front wheels.

Keep in mind, my foot is on the accelerator slightly, there is no 'white' bar protruding into the CHG area or the ECO area and I know I am 'gliding/coasting' as no matter how long I am in this sweet spot, even though the charge arrows are active, I DO NOT top up the battery at all, which says to me the car is indeed 'gliding' without the regenerative brakes or ICS in play and it certainly FEELS like I'm gliding as with over-inflated tires (44/42) the PIP seemingly coasts forever. I'm thinking this is a different behavior from a standard Prius in this 'glide' sweet spot, as, at least on my PIP, I can never get the MID to blank out in terms of energy flow. I.E. have you managed a 'pulse and glide' in a PIP getting the all energy flow arrows to disappear .
