Prius Plug-in 2012-15 :: Engine Start Resetting Mileage Back To Zero
Mar 26, 2015
I have a vague memory that the PiP will start its petrol engine every XXX miles just for a maintenance warm up if it has not been used for that mileage. An engine start will reset that mileage back to zero and start recounting its EV miles until that limit is reached again. What is that limit?

My son got this for his '05 Prius, and I plugged it into my PiP for awhile. I am learning to brake more slowly and accelerate more gradually, but the mileage is obviously way off. That seems to be about all it's good for, unless a check engine light comes on.

My Plugin is only about 4 months old, but the EV mileage range is now down to 9.8 from 12.4 from the first very first day I charged it overnight. This with HVAC and fan off.

My 2004 has 132K miles and still running great. We now have a PIP standard model as well. I can't find a screen that tells what the overall mileage per tank is. Does it exist on this car?

I was driving up a hill today at about 30 mph with .9 miles remaining showing on my EV battery meter when all of a sudden it drops to 0 EV miles remaining and shows only 2 of the battery level bars (which is very very low), and the engine of course turns on. What happened?
I promise I did not push the EV power bar over its threshold. I monitor that like a hawk. I also know for a fact that it jumped from .9 to 0, because I watch that part like a hawk. This part of the trip is near the end of my drive home and I've done it about 50 times so far with no issues. With .9 miles left at that point on the hill I have always been able to make it to my driveway with .4 or .5 remaining, so this is very odd.

Brand new 2014 Prius Plug in. I am getting about 45 mpg on a 14-mile all-city trip and 46 mpg on a 30-mile mixed hwy/city trip. The mpg numbers are from the information display when the car were turned off.
Is that normal? I thought it's supposed to be about 50 mpg. Btw, ECO mode was enabled.

I just took advantage of incentives and traded in my 2012 PiP for a 2015. In hilly San Francisco I'm accustomed to between 8 and 9 all-electric miles per full charge. Today was the new PiP's maiden voyage--a six-mile trip that in the old car would leave me with 2.1 to 2.3 EV miles remaining (per the readout.) But the new car actually ran out of electric power just before the trip's conclusion.

While driving in EV mode I noticed my remaining estimated gas mileage drops. I watch the dash and the EV is constantly light and it doesn't appear the the ICE is coming on. Is this normal?

I'm just curious...if somebody drives a PHV Prius like a regular Prius (not using the 13 mile pure EV mode range), could they theoretically get better gas mileage by staying in the electric part of the hybrid system indicator?

Today, I experienced the coldest temperatures yet on my drive to work. At one point, I saw a '24F' shown as the outside temperature (although not unusual for April in Minnesota):
Expected: My gas mileage was down a bit. I was impressed it wasn't as bad as I would have expected from our 2005 Prius, though.
I should have expected: On the last 1/2 mile or so, when driving slow on the little bit of EV left while in the forced HV mode, I accidentally accelerated too much and forced on the ICE again (it had been previously on earlier in my 22 mile commute). This time, however, it was different because it didn't shut off immediately. I think the ICE had to do a second warm up. I'll have to watch that more closely next time (darn that cold weather)!

I'm not sure where this should be posted, but my MFD showed a mileage reset to 0 today. I only reset at fill-ups so that I can do long division.
Anyway, while trying to figure this out, I saw on the Consumption screen that the AMPG also started bouncing around. Before I shut off the engine, it bounced between 39 and 42.
Since the last fill up, the pips have been decreasing quickly...4 in 71 miles. I know the pips are not a linear measure, but 4 in 71 miles seems pretty quick.
Where I should start looking?

Obviously this doesn't work if you are out of EV? I figure I am essentially still in EV during the warmup cycle so I'd prefer to have that HSI up instead of the HV one.

I've had my PIP for a week now My main complaint, so far, is the back-up beep, which of course does nothing for safety but distract the driver. On my 2005 Prius, which I traded for the 2012 PIP, I could go through a [somewhat complicated] procedure to disable the beep, but it doesn't work for the 2012. but any fix one can implement oneself? On general principles, I resist taking it into the dealership for the fix.

I have been getting increased noise coming from the back of my car for the past month. So I jacked up the car and spun the tires and heard grinding noises in the rear right. I have a 2012 ToyotaPrius plug-in with 33,000 miles. When driving the car around 40 miles an hour there would be a howling sound coming from the back of the car regardless of the type of pavement I was driving on.
So I took it to the dealer today and they had it up on the rack in about an hour later they came to me and said it needed new tires and it would be about $700 and that this was likely causing the noise. I said that there was no way that it was the tires so I went and showed the mechanic how old the sound was coming out of the back right wheel. He listened with his stethoscope on the wheel bearings and said that he did hear some noise in there but still thought it was the tires.

Sometimes I just leave my iPod plugged in to the usb port when I turn off and leave the car. When I come back, the music won't start playing until I unplug it and plug it back in.. Is this a problem? Or am I just not supposed to leave it plugged in? It seems like a hassle to have to take it out every single time I leave the vehicle...
Also, is the sound quality a little choppy for anyone else using USB connection w/ an iPod? I'm using a 3rd gen iPod touch, and I'm pretty sure its software is up to date. Bluetooth sounds amazing, but I like using USB because I can see the song title/playlists and all that good stuff.

A few seconds after the PiP is turned on and I start moving, it gives a little beep.
It's not the doors locking because that happens a few seconds later when I speed up.

A few days ago I noticed when I started the car that both the HV/EV and ECO mode lights were illuminated. What does that mean?

It takes almost 10 seconds for the AC to come on in my PIP when I first start the car. Is this normal?
Sometimes, if the AC has just been running, it will come back on in just 2-3 seconds.

After about a min once bluetooth connects it fails. In setup under bluetooth it says it's off and pushing it does nothing. My phone shows bluetooth on and still paired. If I was talking to someone call does not get dropped but I have to pick up my phone and turn off bluetooth so I can hear them on phone speaker.

Occasionally, right after I start the car, the HDD display screen will be dark for a minute or two, and then display the map. I can go to the other screens, like Audio or the setup screens, but the map and the backup camera screens are dark. The still-functional buttons are responsive as usual (no delays/hangs). When the map finally "wakes up", it behaves normally. I don't have to do anything other than wait for it to wake up. It does this about 10% of the time. I have tried to correlate this to something, but it seems totally random.

On occasion - not frequently - I'll notice the gasoline engine kicking in when I'm in ECO/EV mode with plenty of EV battery left. Today it happened on a relatively flat street, going maybe 30 mph, without the a/c or anything else on, and about 7 miles left on the EV battery indicator. In less than 30 seconds it went back to pure EV and the gasoline engine never kicked in again.
