Prius (Gen 3) :: Trip Computer Shows Single Digits Miles To Empty
Aug 21, 2015
I've had this car for a couple of years now and I think this week is the first time I didn't 'fill up' when I got gas. So now the trip computer is all confused on miles to empty vs the almost half tank I have on the fuel gauge. I've tried resetting the trip & holding the button to reset when miles to empty is displayed. I'm a little nervous with the miles to empty in the single digits now.

I'm a new member learning to use my Prius. I like to use the EV mode in parking lots or to back up from my garage or driveway and avoid running the engine just to warm it up because it warms up quicker and efficiently while driving with engine on (gently of course).
I had a few times when EV was cancelled due to "too high speed" and engine started while I was creeping at very slow speeds (<10 MPH). Today it happened twice. First when I was slowly driving in a flat parking lot of DOR where I got my new Prius plates and later it happened when I was slowly exiting from a parking garage DOWNHILL while braking and regenerating. The battery was almost full all the times it happened (so far it stays almost full all times). The driving distances were very short, like couple of hundreds of feet the most.
I can understand why that would happen while driving uphill (I had that too), but flat or downhill at 10 MPH or less?
I don't think the speed sensor is bad, because I also had EV canceled a few times exactly at 25 MPH and that is normal.
Other than that the EV is great. My house is at the lowest point of the subdivision and if I watch my speed carefully (<25 MPH, incidentally a speed limit) I can go entire mile back home in EV and charge the battery to full state in the process by regenerative braking. By doing my average MPH jumped from 50 to 52 and I just started doing it.

I had a fuel sender failure a couple of weeks ago. 60k mi.
Basically: freeway driving, fuel gauge read 1/8 tank remaining, computer indicated "10 miles till empty" but the car ran out of gas. Fuel sender, in the fuel tank turned out to be the malfunction.
Towed to the dealer...they had never, ever seen this before.
I get the car back next week, just want to bookmark this thread in case any members (God forbid) have this problem now or in the future.
I still have faith in my Lexus, but want to share as this failure was very unusual.

I just bought a used 2004 F-350, 4x4, crew cab, short bed, 6.0L diesel. I'm having a WTF moment on fuel. Gage indicates just under 1/4 of a tank of diesel but the on-board computer is flashing like crazy stating 5 miles to empty, what the hell is that all about?

Recently relocated from Southern California to Central Indiana. Brought with me a 1992 Lexus LS400 in excellent condition and low milage. Problem is; when temps go down to single digits, doors freeze shut and it's a big problem opening. Question... is there something I can apply to the doors or seals to prevent this problem. I believe this is the first freezing temps this vehicle has been exposed to.

When the temperatures drop to the single digits and below, my car won't start. It won't even turn over! I turn the key and there's nothing. So, I sit in the car and then turn the key again. I wait. Then turn the key again. Within about 5-10 minutes, the car starts and its good to go! I've had a new battery installed. And even with the new battery, it does the same thing. At the shop, they check the battery and say it's fine.

How many miles can be driven after the computer tells you have zero miles left to empty? Or rather how many gallons do you think is left in the tank after the computer says you're empty?

I drove my car on a short road trip yesterday. We drove 75 miles to one direction, were there for 5 hours and then came back on the same 75 miles. Everything was fine.
Now when I got home I went to sleep. I got up 7 hours later and went to go check on my car. It was locked as I always leave it and the keys were not in the ignition. But there was a distinct electronic sound coming from the battery. Like a small motor running. It was odd.

Why does the trip computer not reset after every stop, and can it be set this way when required. I've read one explanation abut the Phaeton being a "motorway car", so there is period between stops within which the trip computer does not reset -

just had the car in to be tinted...drove home, parked...and now the center trip computer display will not turn off. cars off, doors locked...it just stays on.
The guy who did my tint has a VW tatoo and loved the ride...he knew it had a euro switch (not installed by me), and said he had to disconnect the battery while doing the job because the headlights wouldn't go off unless the key was out of the ignition and he needed to roll the windows up and down (obvi).

There is a number that is displayed above the mileage when my 2006 Sonata is off. Sometimes it will be really low, and sometimes high. I have looked through the Manual and searched the forums, what this number represents?

The oil was changed by a highly reputable shop 2 days ago, (45 miles ago). My wife noticed today that the "Low Oil Pressure" red message flashed 3 times in the last 5 miles of her 10 mile trip (45-50 mph). She stopped the car and called me. I arrived at the parked Prius and saw no oil on the dipstick. I poured a quart of synthetic in and looked under the car to see it pouring out. My finger discovered that there was No Oil Plug. I called the shop and they sent a tow truck, put a new oil plug in, refilled the oil and claim no damage since "the Prius shuts off the gas engine when low oil pressure is sensed". Looking for information about this "shut off feature?" What should I ask from the shop? What should be tested & checked for? How do you test for damage to the bearings? How about a compression test? The car has 100K miles.

As part of my 60 mile commute everyday to work and back, I would stop by a gas station in a town on my way home that has 30 cent cheaper gas than where I live. The first time I fueled the car there was no problem. Then today even though my gas was at 3/4 full and I stopped anyways to put in 5 dollars.
What happened next was strange, before I stopped to fuel my range was at 448 miles, with the needle exactly on the 3/4 mark, then I put in 5 bucks the needle did not move at all and my range was still at 448 even after I started driving back on the highway again hoping maybe it would reset. The needle then slowly went up but then the range didn't go any higher and was still decreasing as I kept on driving.
The thing different today was I accidentally put in Unleaded PLUS so it mixed with the 3/4 tank of just regular Unleaded gas..but as far as I know that shouldn't affect anything..right?

Where the Miles to Empty Display seems out of whack? Filled up my car last night and it gave an estimate of 508 Miles to Empty. Drove 40 miles in 2 different trips one of 8 another of 32 and the display is down to 442. Is this a common occurrence? I'm assuming its just because I didn't get as good of MPG as the computer was expecting but on the exit screen when I turned the car off it said I averaged 51mpg on the 32 mile trip and the 8 mile trip was 70mpg. I'm not "concerned" about it but it does throw me off and makes me think I might not be getting as good of MPG as I am being told on the exit screen.

I used to drive an Acura which had an option to have the trip computer automatically reset each time after refuel. I spoke to my dealer and they mentioned that this is an option.. I was able to get the 'range' to display be default but haven't been able to figure this out yet.

Yesterday when I was coming home my '01 started going on the fritz. The ABS light came on in the console, the Brake light started flashing, and in the onboard computer I received three kinds of messages, "Brake Fault" "Service Manual" and "STOP". What is going on?

I just bought an 04 F350 with the 6.0 diesel. I have the trip computer but it doesn't seem to be working, the screen is just off. Tried the buttons, nothing. Checked the manual, can't find anything. Is there a trick I'm missing? Or is mine broken?
