Prius (Gen 3) :: Temporary Loud / Super High Pitched Noise

View 11 RepliesSo now that it is winter, I have started to use the heater in the car. It works fine for about 10 minutes until a loud high pitched noise starts. Sounds like something is grinding. Any clue what it is? Is so, how to fix it?
View 2 RepliesLast night around 1:00, I was awakened by a noise I think was coming from my car parked below my window. It was plugged in at the time. I heard a loud, high pitched whine, followed by a couple of knocks or thumps, then a sound like R2D2 makes when he turns his head, then a couple more knocks, and another R2D2 noise. I think I may also have seen lights flashing around the the edges of my blackout blinds, but am not sure, since I had just been sound asleep.
View 4 RepliesI've noticed more and more that when I am braking that I heard a high pitched whining noise. Sort of this ultrasonic type sound. It will only go away if I depress the brake pedal very firmly after being completely stopped. However every so often the firm press will not stop the noise. I hear it more in the evening on the way home than in the morning to work, though I may not be paying attention as much in the A.M. due to morning brain fog.
I don't hear it any other time. I'm worried something is wrong with my inverter.
Car suddenly started a high pitched whistling noise/metal on metal sound at highway speeds. It is intermittent, no noticeable pattern w/acceleration or braking. Similar sound at lower volume when the shock/spring is depressed (pushing down on that corner of the car). Louder at low speeds.
View 6 RepliesAbout a month ago, I purchased my 2013 Prius Four. I've put on about 2,500 miles so far and recently started noticing when I start the car up, it is giving off a high pitched squeaking noise. This happens both when the car is using the electric battery and when I can feel the gas engine kick in. After about a minute or two, the noise goes away and doesn't come back.
View 5 RepliesI took my 2008, 56k in for a new battery after my car sat outside in negative degree temps for a few days. After doing that repair, the dealer recommended a new serpentine belt. Ever since that service appointment, the car is making a high-pitched "woo-wooo" noise during acceleration. It's definitely a noise I've never heard before. I took it back to the dealer two days later; he had the service guy drive it and they both claim the noise is normal and just due to the cold. Is it the belt? Is it the cold? Am I losing my mind?
View 3 RepliesI noticed my truck makes a high pitched whining noise. It does it at idle and while acceleration up to 40 mph or so. The pitch of the wine increases with RPM'S. It is not the cold start whine issue I have researched on YouTube.
It is in the cold or warmth. No difference. It's always there. My 2012 6.2 did not sound like this at all. I have crawled under the truck and it appears like it is coming from the transmission.
I'm completely new to hybrids. I have a 2001 Toyota Prius with 146k miles and its been running very good until some weird things started happening during the past couple of months. When I start it up, the brake light and abs light come on along with a steady high-pitched noise and grinding noise (sounds like ice being scraped). While the lights are on and the sounds are being made, the brake becomes very soft/"spongy" and goes down to the ground without much force at all (It usually always does this when I start it up and sometimes - but not very often - when I'm driving). Sometimes it all goes off and everything is normal again after about 10 mins, sometimes all day, and sometimes only after a minute or two (It usually does it on a cold start, but sometimes even if the engine is heated up, it does it).
View 8 RepliesI have had my certified 2010 Prius II, not two because it is a 2010 and 2010 used uppercase roman numerals for model designation, with 82000 miles about 3 months and sometimes when I apply the brakes I hear a high pitched whirring noise. I think the closest thing to compare it to would be a skill saw but not that loud.
View 2 RepliesI know this noise is the Thermos Pump and it operates when I turn the car on and off. Question - is it failing - also a really annoying noise, but I'll put up with it as long as nothing's breaking.
View 4 RepliesWhile driving home tonight in the snow, about half away home I noticed the most god awful high pitched squeal sound coming from what sounded like the back passenger side of the car. The squeal was so loud it made me cringe. I couldn't really get any near 40 mph because I could hear it start and instantly it would become really loud and would only stop when I slow down almost completely and then maintain a speed around 30 mph. It's pitch black out so I couldn't conduct a real thorough inspection however a quick look over and I didn't see anything wrong.
View 22 RepliesMy car occasionally makes a high pitched whine while driving it's very loud and very frustrating. I've come to the following conclusions: It only happens when the car is warm, it only happens at speeds above 40mph, it doesn't correspond to either accelerating or decelerating, it happens either way and in between. I've had people in the car while it's happened and the noise seems to come from the driver's side rear wheel. Sometimes it gets so loud and then gets even louder when I begin to apply the brakes, it's as if it starts screaming.
I've had mechanics take apart the complete brake system on every wheel and put them back together. They've put anti-squeal on the brakes to no avail. While driving the noise can come and go, with no apparent reason why. It happens in rain and on warm sunny days. Also, the noise seems to oscillate as if it is something that's spinning, I'd guess it's at approximately 160 beats per minute. This has been occurring for about a year, it was not this way when I got the car. No mechanics have ever found anything, but it's so loud! And so annoying and embarrassing. This can't be normal, what is it!?
When it is cold (below 30 degrees) and above about 30mph, there is a loud high pitched squeal (rather like the pitch of a squealing hearing aide)that seems to come form the front drivers side. The colder it is, the louder it is.
When I am able to take it in it is too warm to hear it. What might be causing the noise and will they be able to figure it out if it isn't making the sound?
My wife loves her Mercedes 1999 320CLK. Low mileage (120,000), excellent interior and body condition. One problem. When she turns on the heater there is a very high pitched whistle that gets loud and then slowly tapers off. This repeats from time to time. Randomly there is a sound like a flap/door slamming shut. All sound comes from behind the dash. Also, from the dash behind the steering wheel area you hear a sound kind of like someone squeezing a plastic water bottle - plastic crackling sound. Our mechanic took a look at this and told us that some sort of hose was loose. It was reconnected and things got better for a little while....now its back. Once in a while this happens with the AC.
View 5 RepliesI have been getting a loud, high-pitched mechanical-sounding noise coming from the middle of the dash, near the CD player. It lasts only a few seconds, but it scares the sh!t out of me every time! It happens out of the blue after I've been driving for a few minutes about every 3 weeks or so. The sound is almost impossible to describe...but if you've had it happen you probably know exactly what I'm talking about. It happened today while I was listening to a CD, so I can't imagine it's the player that's doing it. Non-Nav/Air V8
View 1 RepliesI recently had to have e my alarm replaced on the car and after i left the dealer i parked and locked the car and came to notice that the chirp is no longer a chirp but a high pitched very loud beep that lasts longer than the previous chirp. The odd thing is that when i activate the alarm it sounds exactly as it should. I contact the dealer and asked if they gave me the right alarm and assured me that it is right and properly installed. What is going on??
View 6 RepliesI don't have a Prius with a built-in bluetooth function, so I purchased the Blackberry Bluetooth Stereo Gateway that gives me audio just by plugging in my 3.5mm jack.
Unfortunately, when the car's engine revs up, I get a very high-pitched audio interference noise. This does not happen when I am connected directly into my phone.
I think my setup may be unique in that I have an XM commander, and Christian at Enfig made a special cable so that I have power connectors to the CD changer and my XM commander unit. Christian did a great job with this.
My dilemma is that there is a high pitched noise coming through the XM when the engine is running. It is not loud, and is not as audible at lower volume, but with my hearing problems, it is louder to me than to others.
The noise is not there when the car is not started. I guess there is no filter running the power to the changer (I am guessing), and now my XM commander box. I would not even know what to do regarding a filter or where it should go. The CD still plays clear with no noise. I have not connected an IPOD yet to the X3, but since the power to the CD and the XM commander is coming from the car battery, I figured that was the culprit.
Also, if I did not need the additional audio inputs, the XM roady I had in my center console via FM transmitter had more volume and more bass than my XM commander via X3. The XM roady did not sound good at all via the X3, and the XM commander was clearly better via X3 interface.
Started my R this afternoon and got a new high pitch noise that I have never heard before. [URL] .... What it is?
View 14 RepliesI have a high pitched noise coming from my car's navigation DVD. If I eject the DVD, the noise goes away. It starts up again when I put the DVD back in. Sometimes it doesn't make any noise, but it's typically on the whole time the car is on. When I stop the car, it continues for a little bit, which makes me think that it has something to do with the DVD rubbing against something.
A few months ago, I would get sporadic errors about the disc that would go away if I ejected and reinserted the disc. Other than the high pitched noise, it seems to be running fine now. The main question I have is whether replacing the disc has any hope to get rid of the noise or if I have a bigger problem and need to repair the system.
