I have a very strange sound coming from the back of the car. It sounds exactly like you have a 6 pack of mineral water in plastic bottles wrapped in foil in the trunk. It makes this sound when I go over some small bumps and not paved roads. However on bigger bumps it is completely quiet.
My problem is that I do not know where the sound is coming from. I would really like to get rid of the sound myself.
The car has begun making a horrible clanking sound when going over small bumps. It sounds like it did when the control arm bushings were bad on my old mkIV. There are less than 5kmi on the car, so I can't imagine any mounts are worn out. It's still under warranty, so I know that it's just a dealer visit, but I'm wondering anyway. It sounds like crap.
View 8 RepliesI recently lowered my 2012 Beetle with HR super sport springs/stock struts.. So this annoying tin rattling sound has come out. I just replaced the strut mounts thinking they separated like they are known to do. Sound Still there. Now my thinking either it is the sway bar end links being too long or possibly I have aftermarket wheels and aluminum hub rings it could be rattling over small bumps? Could it be the strut bearings? I've been over everything that I can think of and nothing is loose.
View 1 RepliesI recently did a brake job on an 02 Explorer, consisted of new pads and rotors (Rear). The Slide pins were fine and the piston was not frozen in the calipers.
Shortly after the Explorer will occasionally make this "thump...thump....thump..." feeling/sound.
It is not vibration.... it feels more like passing over small bumps in the road.
It is most consistent from 30-50mph, but I have felt it from 20-65.
It is more prominent on decel, but you can feel it on accel as well.
It makes no difference if you touch the brakes or not, or if you push the clutch in and/or take it out of gear.
Speed does not seem to effect the timing of the "thumps" it appears to be the same from 20-60mph. I'm at a loss...

I have a rattling noise coming from the front suspension (both sides) when going over small bumps. Most people point to ball joints, but I find my case odd because I just replaced

Tie rod ends
Shocks
Front U joints

I did not touch the leaf springs or the sway bar, except to grease the links, which otherwise looked good.
Today I should make trade for MKIV R32 and I only thing I'm bit worried is this one sound. It appears when speed is over 40 mph/60 kmh. And especially then when I set my gas pedal loose / idle. The sound seems to be coming from back and it reminds the sound when you leave your window just little open and wind blows in making very similar sound. It is high frequency sound and not loud but still can clearly be heard. Almost like whistling type of sound. Then when speed decreases below 40 mph the sound disappears.
The car has milltek resonated exhaust.
Only thing I could think of is that if there could be some hole in exhaust pipe or in window caulk/seal..
2004 PSD 4x4 72k. I thought I would be proactive so I bought the front ball joints and have plans to install them but recently I starting hearing (and feeling) a clicking sound in the front LEFT when I make sharp turns to the left and hit small bumps now and again. I jacked up the front end and am able to get 1/4" of movement front to back (top to bottom so not steering) in the wheel.
I narrowed it down to the hub. I took it apart and it is most likely a sealed unit so no adjustment is possible....that I can see.I pulled out the locking hub and got as far as I can to know there is not an adjustment. Need to confirm that it indeed is a sealed bearing and if so what are the part number(s) I may need to repair it.
What may cause a strange whirring sound when my R32 is on. I can be in park, sitting still..whatever...It sounds like it's coming from somewhere around the rear tires.
Whirring...humming... Honestly to me it sounds similar to an electric motor trying to do it's job but something is keeping it from doing so. Would be the best way to describe it. I just got the car a few weeks ago and the sound started last week.
I've got a strange sound coming from the front axle. I want to rule out/in that it may be my auto lock hubs. Can I slide the hubs out and drive around? I dont see any problem I won't be offroad, just some miles to test it.

My father in law has an 04 EX with the 5.4. It has a weird sound coming from the front passenger side. He listened to the jiffy lube kid who told him it was the brakes. I pulled one side completely apart tonight and the brakes are fine. We took it for a drive so I could hear the noise. It is coming from the passenger side up front. It is intermittent.
Doesn't matter if we hit a bump or pot hole. It sounds like a cat being run over. It will either last for a few seconds or just really quick. I crawled underneath and could not find anything loose. The first time I heard it I thought it was a shock. But the second time it was way too long to be a shock. And they are only a year old.
Secondly, it has a cat, and two mufflers..... Is this normal?

I've got a strange squeal sound coming from under the hood only when truck is cold? It sounds like a bearing and after it gets heated up the sound stops. I talked with a guy thats a cummins guy and he said he had a similar issue and he had to replace the bearing in the turbo? Also when truck is warm it will still do it, like for instance, if I run in a store and truck idles for 5-10 mins it will do it only if I romp on it for a short while like 2-3 mins then again goes away. And if I'm idling or in neutral, hot/cold, it does not do it, it seems to be only under a load. Pull a 26 foot boat no problems.
What could be making the strange pumping sound coming from under my hood after I shut off the truck?? It sounds like a small compressor or pump running.
View 4 RepliesI was running a small errand today, about 10 miles round trip. When I started out, I heard a small 'clunk' sound coming from the rearend. When I was on the return trip and making my last stop, the 'clunk' sound had become quite louder as I accelerated, and could really feel it. When I got home, I took a look and was expecting to see maybe a sway bar link detached or the bushing worn.
I did not expect to see two lug nuts completely gone, including the stud, as well as the holes in the rim no longer round. Big gouges in the rim around the remaining lug nuts, about to be sheared off! The other side had two missing lug nuts, however, the rim is still intact. What would cause such horrific damage? I am lucky that I was not driving on the freeway at 80 mph! This is my 2002 Excursion 4x4.
2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4WD.... Rear brakes make strange winding sound when coming to a full stop, noise only apparent under 5MPH. They have been completely done over. Rear end issue? Changes gears fine, brakes work ok.

View 5 RepliesI've just bought a 1996 celica GT. It has very low mileage and is in great general shape for it's age. There is one thing that annoys me and it's a clicking sound coming from the rear passenger side wheel when going over bumps (I hear it a low speeds as tire noise take over after I guess). I was wondering if I should be looking for different signs when I jack it up? Worn bushings? And is there a way to reproduce the sound. I've read about the rear bushing being a problem on these cars... is it true?
View 5 RepliesI've noticed a creaking sound coming from the left front wheel when I go over a couple of particularly large speed bumps. I have had a lot of problems with the suspension in this car, and have replaced the front struts, the front right control arm, and the sway bar links and bushings. My best guess is that this noise is coming from the front left control arm, as it has not been replaced, although my current mechanic says that the front left control arm is fine. Also, it has been under 10 F here the past few days, so this could also just be a result of the cold weather.

'01 Taurus with an occasional rattle/clunking sound coming from the front end when going over bumps. Took it to the local shopping center auto. service dept. (probably 1st mistake I know) They say the only thing they could find was the RH CV boot was bad and was probably the source of the noise. Doesn't sound right to me since the boot is rubber and what I hear is more of a metal sound..what I was thinking possibly a suspension link or tie rod end. I know what a bad cv JOINT sounds like and it's nothing like this. Now if the CV boot is bad I don't mind to replace it, but I don't want to spend the money if it is not going to solve the problem. I've never heard of a boot making noise before.
