I took the Prius on a ski trip and halfway to our destination the speedometer display went blank and has not yet come back to life. It was fairly cold outside (-5 F) and I have seen other people blame the cold weather for a Generation II Prius.
View 19 RepliesJust last night, I stopped to pick up my daughter and had to wait for 10 minutes or so, so left the parking lights on and put it into park. When we began to leave later, I noticed that there was no HSI or Speedometer showing when I turned the lights on (to include parking lights). I turned it off and on again, hoping that would take care of it. It did not. I put it through a charge cycle, still no change.
View 2 RepliesThe battery went dead on my 2010 Prius and when I had AAA jump start the car the clock plus the display with odometer, mpg, hybrid battery graph etc, no longer light up. Everything else seems to work.
Is there any easy way reset it other than taking to the dealer? (Could a fuse have blown etc.?)
My wife on her way home from work called me to say that the MID screen was blank - not working. I asked if she could drive the car, she could, but the energy monitor screen that she has on usually was not coming on. Her concern while driving was that she could not tell how fast she was going.
Fortunately, just a week ago I had installed Scangauge II in her car and had her convert one of existing gauge to MPH. This is a new 2012 Prius IV that is about 2 months old. I'm pretty sure that MID can't be turned off.
Went to a meeting one evening last week with my 2010 Prius, everything working well. After the meeting we drove away and noticed that most of the dash display was "dark". Driving home and feeling a little gloom as I wondered what it might cost to fix the display problem.
I noticed the poster announcing the meeting we attended was laying on the dash and was pushed up to the display screen. I pulled the poster back an inch and the display came back on !! Pushed it forward and when it got within 1/2 inch of the display, it would blank out ??
It appears the dash display is some sort of bottom projection system to the display screen. Pushing anything up to the display screen blocks that bottom projection and blanks the screen.
While traveling speedometer and fuel level indicated blanked out. No other problems--I could see our speed by using GPS.
Toyota service said a circuit board was burned out. I searched and found numerous such problems with 04 up to 09 and eventually (in 2012) Toyota initiated an extended warranty to cover replacement of the board.
This morning, went out to my car, started fine, but the speedometer display and all other icons on the display are off. Except for the turn flasher indicators. 2006 model, 271,000 miles. Is this a recall item? I think I remember something about this being recalled. I might add it got really cold last night, about 6 degrees, and my car was parked outside.

View 2 RepliesStarted about a month ago, no speedometer or fuel gauge (the display up on the dash). So, somewhere I found out about unplugging the 12v battery and that worked...for a while! After a few times doing that, I read somewhere that it is a sign that the 12v battery is going. So, I took it in to the local auto parts store, they tested it and said it was good.
I bought one anyhow since it was about 3-1/2 years old. That worked for about 2 weeks, but now it's back! I've unplugged the battery and again it has ( temporarily ) fixed this issue. The other thing that happens is that it is difficult to turn off and requires you to hold the power button for an extended period of time. I guess part of my problem is I am not sure what to call that display and my searches are coming up with all sorts of things. I have about 160,000 and have had no problems.
My Display goes black when turning the headlights on. Works fine with the lights off. (2008)
View 4 RepliesMy uncle just bought this used 2004 Prius for me (with my money) and I'm having some issues.
The car makes some weird noises and I've made a video. Also I think the battery is dying because sometimes the speedo doesn't display and I have to disconnect the battery to get it to come back. The Brake vsc and some other indicator lights also came on. I reset them but they came back in week or so.
I just picked up my car from the body shop and noticed the outdoor temp display in the MFD blank (3 dashes) and the AC is blowing hot air. I don't hear the compressor going on either. The AC was working fine until I brought it in. (Why does it always end up like this?!)
Since this was an insurance claim due to a motorcyclist hitting the front driver panel and ripping off a portion of the bumper, the body shop said they didn't touch anything with the AC.
I'm bringing the car back in tomorrow morning so they can have a look and determine whether it was loss related. Is there a sensor in that area? What to check? I have the manual climate system (climactic?).
This has happened 5 times since I purchased in late Dec. Info Display (between tach and speedo) goes blank. I shut everything down, wait a few minutes and still nothing comes up. Most recently happened last Thurs, Sat. and Sun.
View 4 RepliesI've owned a 2014 Prius Four (not IV, Roman numerals were for model year 2010) w/o Nav for just about a year now. I've encounter this mysterious condition three times now where when I turn on my car, all I see on the front displays are the READY light on the far left and the mini-display that shows the shift pattern.
* Both the speedometer/fuel gauge display on the left of the shift pattern display and the "Hybrid status" display on the right of the shift postion display are OFF.
* The car operates normally (it's not in a limp-home mode).
When I first encountered this issue and reported it to my local dealer, they suggested I take a video of it with my smartphone. I did so the car (and a copy of the video) is now at the dealership.
The second and third times this issue came up, I took videos and did some additional testing.
- When these two displays are OFF, there is no backlight to the climate control LED display underneath the stereo...
- I normally drive the car with the headlamps in "AUTO" mode. When you shift the headlamp switch to "DRL off", the two missing displays automatically power on. In any other position (Auto, corner marker lamps only, or headlamps ON position) the two displays in question turn off.
- The issue isn't with me accidentally turning the dimmer switch too low. When the dimmer switch is set to max low and the dash light sensor is covered (emulating complete darkness outside), all three displays on the dash (including the shift position display) are barely visible/look off. As the service advisor saw in my video, that's not the case.
This is clearly a safety issue ("you cannot tell how fast you are going" and "you cannot tell easily how much gas you have left without going through the infotainment display) so for now the dealership at least seems to be on my side in that something needs to be repaired. The good news is that now that the issue has been documented in my service history, they did comment that it will get fixed eventually even if the issue comes back after test. For now, the dealership is stumped so they asked Toyota for guidance on what parts to try replacing.
RNS810 ... My display went blank even though all the touch screen features are available (but hidden from view). Phoned VW who say there is a software update to address the blank screen issue - will try and get it done tomorrow.
View 1 RepliesThe instrument cluster screen in my 2004 phaeton suddenly stopped displaying anything today, I've tried removing and replacing fuses but still nothing, not even the backlight for the display is on, everything else is working fine its just the display. I need the car for a 600mi trip in 2 days.
View 3 Replies1997 Ford F250 4x4 HD ... My vehicle has about 197,000 miles on it and for the most part still functions properly. I do have an odd "happening" sometimes and here is a description:
I will be driving along and all of a sudden the digital odometer readout will go blank and the speedometer will drop to 0 if I was going 60 mph or below or to 120 if I was going over 60 mph.
Where do I start troubleshooting?
I got in my 2010 Highlander and started it and the small display screen that shows gas milage, air temps, time, temperature. etc. just went white. It appears to have light behind it but will not display anything.
View 3 RepliesRecently brought a 2015 camry SE and wouldn't you know it, someone pulls out in front of me on the highway within a week of buying it. After getting the car back from the auto body shop, I've noticed that my multi information display has a blank screen. Didn't notice that before the accident. The first 3 screens I can set up as I want, the 4th screen is tire pressure and the 5th screen is blank. I've tried to find out what the 5th screen should be but I haven't been able to find an answer.

View 2 RepliesI have very recently purchased a 2011 GX. Everything seems to be in working order, aside from the "multi-information display" in the gauge cluster. While the electronics options screen functions as described in the manual, pressing the menu button results in a blank screen instead of switching to the customization and/or driver information screens.
