Prius (Gen 3) :: Noise From The Rear Of The Car
May 24, 2013
I have a brand new 2013 Prius III with a little over a hundred miles on it now. I started to notice that every time I sit or standup to get out I hear a noise from the rear of the car. When I drive it normally, I don't really hear any trouble with the suspension or brakes. This sound happens before I even power up the car.

I just bought a new set of the Hankook 727 195/60/R15 tires from TireRack installed yesterday (with an alignment as well).
I immediately noticed that when I make turns now, I get this "squishy" feeling from the rear end, like the car is floating its way through the turn. For a good half-second, the rear end just keeps moving to the side. Its very disconcerting. Its the same feeling I had several months ago when I got a nail in one of the Conti's before the tire went completely flat.

We have around 18000 miles on our car and we have been getting a noise from the right rear wheel. It only happens first thing in the morning and last for a minute or so. Sounds like the bearing but every time we take it to the dealership, they haven't been able to diagnose it.

When I'm driving and I open just the rear windows - I get a buffeting, choppy, shaking noise - kinda like the whop, whop of a copter blade. The first time it happened I thought I had a flat tire. Is it the cover for the cargo area?

I have a 2007 with 87000 miles on it. Over the past two months, it's developed a clicking noise from the rear of the car. At first I thought it was a loose hatch, but it seems to be shutting snugly. It only happens on slight bumps and not on actual potholes. It sounds exactly like the sway bar links on my old volvo would sound when they were going (which was often), but there are no sway bars on the prius. A suspension noise doesn't surprise me after the winter. The other odd thing is that it occasionally disappears completely for a day or two.

Tried searching, but all I found were links to fan noise in rear seat area. Yesterday my wife was in the garage and heard a fan-like noise in the right rear wheel well. The car had been parked for a couple of hours after a trip to the doctor's office. I could faintly hear it inside the cargo area when the 12v battery is located, but it was more pronounced outside. I got the key, started the car and the noise stopped and hasn't returned. I have no problem taking it in to have it checked, but I thought I'd check here before I did that in case it's normal. It's intermittent, so I don't know how easy it will be to diagnose.

I bought a 2002, being a total new by I thought that faint humming noise was the electric motors doing , it's thing. Noise was faint when only me in the car or going slowly. Well as soon as I had someone sitting in the rear it was a loud humming droning noise that seemed to get quieter when making right turns like heavy off ramps at speed.
Finally jacked the car up and checked for wheel bearing noise. Fronts were too hard to check as there was resistance while turning wheel by hand, but the rear passenger seemed rough but no noise or looseness while turning by hand compared to the driver rear side.

Someone hit my Prius 2015 while it was parked. Since being hit, I can hear an oscillating noise that gets fairly pronounced at 70+ mph. This noise is like: similar to a gradually increasing engine noise, as if there is a truck next to me that's trying to gradually out pace me or oscillating road noise. It's mild at 50 mph, but gets pretty pronounced at 70+ mph.

I'm getting a rattle in the hatch area -- making a sound as if the hatch is moving independent of the body.
Sound like the hatch is loose -- but it's not. If I grab hold of the wing and try and move the hatch ---- it's tight and I get no sound.

I brought my prius v back to the dealer for the fourth time because of the groaning noise from the rear brakes. I was told that Toyota is aware of the problem and they are designing a new rear brake. They expect it to be ready for installation after January 1st, 2013. Let's hope it isn't too far after the first of the year.

Got home from work the other day, shut down my 2012 Prius 4 and went into the house. A couple of hours later went into the garage to drop a trash bag and heard a humming/whirling sound from the garage. Walked around the Prius and isolated it coming from the bottom rear of the car. Went and got key, turned the car on, then off again and the noise ceased. What that was? Fuel pump maybe? And why did this occur?

I have a prius c 2 2012 and we just got about 8-9 inches of snow and after driving in the storm to work when I start up my prius or step on the gas to merge onto say a highway I have a small rattle noise in the rear/ muffler area under the car. My dad says it could just be build up of snow and ice under the car.

First the specs: 2008 w/38K, not sure which package but nothing fancy. This morning got in the car and started off and hear a metallic rubbing noise coming from the left rear of the car. Sounded like it came from around the wheel area. Temp was coolish around 36 degrees. The noise only happened for the first few minutes and only when going real slow, like 5 or 10 mph, and only when I was turning right.
Sound was like the the sound you get when a brake pad is worn way down and scrubbing on a rotor or drum. Also, the sound would speed up as I sped up until a certain speed then would go away. I actually stopped and restarted to be sure I could make it happen again. Once the car warmed up I couldn't reproduce the noise. Drove the car later in the afternoon with temps in the high 40s and no noise. Also, I never use the E brake so can't imagine that would have any impact

Once in awhile, as in maybe once a month or every few thousand miles, I hear a rattling noise in the rear below the car. It is very audible and everyone in the car notice it.
This happen only when I have been in traffic for awhile during which:
1) when battery is running really low from moving at low speed
2) After which the engine is turned on to charge the battery
3) moving low speed with the engine running.
The vibrating noise increases as my speed increase, getting more audible and vibrating faster. After a certain point (maybe 30 mph) the noise stopped.

I've recently noticed that on my 2005 Gen 2, after starting the car, the first few miles I drive produce a gentle metallic rhythmic scraping sound coming from the right rear wheel.
It's only audible when driving at low speeds (<30 mph), and seems to disappear after the car has been driven for a few miles. But when I start the car fresh the next day, it has reappeared.
The rate of the scraping noise varies directly with the speed I'm driving. I think it only happens when I'm coasting (in Drive), and possibly also when I'm braking.
My guess is something is slightly misaligned or rusty - a disc brake? And the noise "disappears" when the metal gets warmed up?

It is gone at 120K. Thought it could be the tire, so rotated but noise still comes from driver side rear. Car is a daily driver but we do not live in snow belt, so cannot blame it on salt.

Last week, I went out to my garage to investigate a motion sensor event that shouldn't have occured. It was about 3:00 in the morning. The Prius had been powered off for probably 8 hours or more.

I have a 2001 w/94k. New tires and alignment (3k). Recently I have been hearing a humming noise which can start to be heard around 45mph which gets increasingly loud up to 65mph, and then seems to quiet down if I go above 70mph. From the driver's seat it sounds like it's coming from the driver's side rear of the car and from the passenger seat it sounds like it's coming from the passenger side rear of the car. So it definitely sounds like it's coming from the rear of the car. Bringing my car in to get looked at it is difficult with my work schedule, so I thought I would try here first. Around the city there is no noticeable sound and there has been no loss in MPG that I can tell (44-47).

I seem to be getting a creaking noise (the same sound you get when you lean on the armrest) coming from the passenger side rear. It sounds like it is coming from the hatch, but I can't quite narrow it down. The creaking noise appears when I drive slowly over bumps.
