I got my first Prius last week but something started happening I noticed a few days ago, that sometimes (between 30 - 40%) of the time when I brake there is a metallic plinking sound, and directly under where I let my non - driving foot chill out (which is basically the center of the drivers site floorboard), my foot can feel the plink as well

Most of the time when I go over little divest in the road; just large enough to barely feel, I hear a metallic clicking sound from the front passenger side of the vehicle. It is only audible with the windows down. It only happens if I am going faster than around 10mph. Sometimes I hear a similar sound from the drivers side, but not as much as the passenger side. I do not usually hear it when hitting larger bumps that work the shocks a bit harder.
It really sounds like some loose bits of metal contacting each other. I do not see anything obvious with a quick visual inspection, but I have not raised the vehicle to really get a good look down there.
I'm back with another question! My 2006 Prius now has 60,XXX miles and the other day while driving with the windows down, I was climbing a hill to my house and when the engine is at a certain RPM, there is a metallic sound that comes from under the car, but more in the front. You can't even hear it when the windows are up barley, but more when they are down, you can hear it, especially when you're beside a wall or guard rail and the sound can reverberate back.
View 2 RepliesWhen accelerating up a steep grade the engine will ping (rattling metallic sound) when reaching a certain RPM, but stop pinging as I continue to push the accelerator down and increase the RPM. Should I be concerned? Could it be something else, loose exhaust heat shield or something? Or is this normal behavior for a gasoline engine? My old Honda Fit never had engine ping/knock that i can recall in its 200,000km of service running the same 87 octane gas.

On the December day my 2013 Prius Five model (hatchback with all the safety add ons, bigger wheels) turned 18 months old, i was on the way to have one of the freebie services. I heard a metallic rattle, seemingly coming from the back of the interior. It continues and I cannot find a source for it. I just read a thread about rattles in the 2011s. Not particularly comforting given what I spent on the car.
Is this something I could have the dealer chase under the warranty? (this is the first new car i ever bought in my 50 years of driving, so my familiarity with new car warranties is a little thin.)
My dealer has been pretty responsive -- swapping out an interior door panel as a freebie when the armrest portion separated from the lower portion and collapsed into the door.
I've been noticing this one single "metallic" click sound a few months ago, it happens whenever I turn the steering wheel a little over 90 degrees.
The steering intermediate shaft recall has been done summer of last year. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with this sound I'm hearing.

Was about three blocks from home when the front of the car started making a horrific metallic scraping sound as the front wheel turned. I mean LOUD. Did a quick look for something stuck in the wheels somewhere but nothing. It's not like a branch stuck in the wheel sound, but scraping a shovel on a steel beam kind of sound. Braking seems to change the makeup of the sound, but did not stop it. Parked it in the garage.
I pulled the left wheel off, looked and looked, and looked. Nothing. Fear and sadness setting in. Everything looked normal....except....a faint line on the rotor very near the inside edge. Got a mirror and looked some more, and there, wedged on the inside edge of the pad's metal part and the rotor, was a rock the size of a bb. At most. Got a small screwdriver and hammer and popped it out. Done. Sheesh.
Seriously it was so loud it was amazing. So store in file folder for future reference if needed.
The line can be felt barely with a fingernail and is half the width of a pencil lead, and goes under the innermost 1/8" of the pad. I'm thinking do I want the dealer to pull and turn it, or is it going to affect my braking at all. Pretty much gonna leave it be I think.
I have a 2010 Prius with about 20,000 miles.
We recently went on a long road trip and my wife hit something in the road. Since then I have noticed a sound when braking anytime I am going 0-10 MPH. It almost sounds like closing a lid on a box or something. It's not very loud, but I can feel it and hear it underneath my feet when I brake.
Perhaps something got dislodged when we hit the road debris?

The sound only happens when we are gently applying the brakes while turning (either direction) at about 10-15 MPH, especially if that turn has even a slight negative (downward) slope.
It's like a clicking sound that repeats 5-10 times with maybe 0.1 secondsbetween each click.
I am noticing a sort of clunk or knocking noise from under the hood when I hit the brakes. I thought it might be the pads, but it comes from under the hood .It only makes the sound on the first touch of the brake, once you have your foot on the pedal it stops the noise. It does this every time on the first application of the pedal. Is this sound normal? I don't recall hearing it when I test drove the car, maybe it's been there all along and I am just now making note of it.
View 5 RepliesI have a 2002 Prius that started sounding weird about a week ago... sounded like a jet engine when accelerating and braking. Also, it felt like it wasn't going into gear right when accelerating from a stop in either R or D.
I took it to the Toyota dealer, and the Prius guy drove it, and told me it was the "transmission,' which would cost about 5K to fix. I should get a computer diagnosis. So I took the car in earlier this week, and the only code that showed up was P0, random system misfire.
Well, last night, I was driving and 3 warning lights came on all at once:
1) power system warning light
2) hybrid vehicle battery light
3) hybrid system warning light
I am trying to troubleshoot a sound that I've begun to notice coming from the front of my '08 Prius. I've had this car since new, and it now has a little over 40,000 miles on it. (Please note the sound I'm referring to is not the brake pump electric "whirring" noise that happens evey so often, it's definitely something new/different.) I first noticed it maybe a year ago, but it seems to be happening progressively more often.
View 19 RepliesWhen slowing to a stop and turning to the right, there is a ticking sound (not loud) coming from the front. The ticking rate slows as the wheel slows and continues until almost stopped. Break pedal pressure does not affect the sound. The dealer tech heard the sound on a demo drive but they had no clue what it was and found nothing wrong.
The tech, sitting in the right seat thought the sound was coming from the left side. I hear it coming from the right side. Maybe that means it comes from the middle? I only hear it when coming to a stop. Maybe road noise covers it up at higher speed but I don't know.
Currently at about 38,000 miles.
Yesterday we were on a 10 hour trip and the engine was acting oddly; when braking, the engine sounded just like the engine brake, but the MPG indicated that it was consuming fuel (engine brake does not consume fuel). When braking, the engine would sound, and the MPG indicator indicates fuel consumption, it would go down to 50, with the heavier braking, like when stopping... then at a certain point it would suddenly stop
It seemed to happen most times but not always. This issue didn't happen before.
I purchased (2/17/16) a 2009 Toyota Prius with roughly 73,000 miles. I have recently (the past 4-5 days, except the brake issue that occurred a couple of weeks ago) encountered a number of issues. The issues occur intermittently.
First, while braking, usually when it's raining or damp outside, I might hear a grinding sound like grains between the pad & rotor. Or, the car will be gliding to a stop then at about the 4-6 mph range the brakes will grab and the car comes to a complete and abrupt stop.
Second, while idling in 'P' the engine will engage and the car will shift forward about an 1-2" then roll back (as if bucking). My foot is off the brake pedal. I have the sensation that the car is going to drive itself.
I have Prius 2005 , there is no problem and no registered error code,but the problem occur when i drive my car on long down road and the HVB is full then the charging sound rise ,its like "B" mode on high speed,this sound continue while pressing on the break pedal or not but when i press on the fuel pedal or convert to transmission to "N" mode the sound return to normal ,but if i press on the break or leave my leg the sound return again,this happen if the battery is full but when the battery loss some charge everything return without any problem.
View 5 RepliesMy '10 is just over 2 years old now and virtually trouble-free. But since new, I have a noticeable turbine/whining sound slowing to a stop esp while braking from 20mph to a stop. I wrote it off to the motor generator and brake regeneration - hybrid sounds. All fine and well. But I have ridden in two other '10s in the last year and they both seem to make less sounds while decelerating and braking than mine. Is it my imagination or is there something to it? I'd rather not blindly bring it to the Dealer as I'm sure it would get a "normal operation" finding.
1. Is there a TSB out on this by chance?
2. My 3/36 warranty will be up in 10 months. Is there a master TSB listing available on PChat or elsewhere (for free) to check on open G3 Prius TSBs?
I have determined that I most likely have a bad CV joint - a faint clicking sound while braking that varies with speed that happens with the car in drive, but not in neutral.
I've also found instructions here on how to remove/replace the axle, but I'm wondering if it can be done without separating the tie rod end and removing the ball joint. On other cars I've managed to do this by unbolting the strut, which allowed the hub assembly to flop out enough to be able to slide the axle out of it. Is this possible on the Prius? I have to replace my struts anyway so I was hoping to do it all at once and avoid dealing with potentially frozen suspension components.
I have a 2007 Kia Rio LS. I can't get it to do this ALL time time, but when I accelerate hard (passing, getting off the line quickly) I hear a metallic sort of coughing sound from my car. It seems to happen around 30-40 MPH, but not the same speed each time. I think I may have heard that sound once while it was idling.
I have done all the scheduled maintenance (I'm behind a bit for the 70,000) that my mechanic has recommended, and I keep up OK with my oil changes. We've skipped doing the timing belt thing, because it's a tear apart job- we're going to wait until 'other things' need doing and get it all in one fell swoop. This is my road trip car. I'm worried my transmission is slipping, or my timing belt is prepping to do something horrible while I'm on the road. Probably in the middle of nowhere.....
I have an issue with my 2011 350 that is quite perplexing. I get an intermittent sound... best I can describe it is like a metallic vacuum sound that seems to come from the right rear of the car. There is no pattern to when it arises... comes and goes. I've been to the dealership with it 3 times and of course it did not occur. They must think I am hallucinating. I thought it might be an exhaust problem.
