Prius (Gen 3) :: Loud Scrapping Sound - Brakes Squealing At 22,000 Miles
Jul 29, 2012
I'm the loudest Prius in CT right now. My brakes doing that loud scraping sound. Is it normal to need brakes this soon?

View 6 RepliesI have a 2014 IS350 F Sport, I'm at 26k miles. My brakes are squealing and scrapping. Is it time to get new brakes already? How hard is it to do on this car? I've changed brakes on other cars!
View 5 RepliesDriving my golf to take daughter to airport, all or a sudden there is this very loud metal scrapping sound. So I pull over and see this metal bat hanging from under the car and rubbing on the ground. At this point I'm not sure what it is and cant really budge it or dislodge it.
Anyway called for roadside assistance and a towtruck comes. The guy lifts the car a bit and is able to free this metal rod. Its about 1.8m (6ft) long and about 5mm thick (approx). Couple of photos below. Not sure if its part of suspension, steering or something else. Did have a mobile mechanic today doing some work on the cooling system (flange) he had to jack up the car.

Actually this started occurring at around 10k miles and I find it odd this would happen this early. It seems to happen more often on cold days and after a couple stops its gone. Why is this? I have heard of premature brake where on these cars and that braking power is biased towards the back under normal braking. I really do not how there is reduced brake dive using the brakes this way but its a vw. Is it just the stock pads that are bad?
View 4 RepliesMostly highway miles. Squeal doesn't happen all the time, only sometimes.
The pads I bought were from O'Reily's here and I believe they were BrakeBest Ceramic brake pads. Should I give it some more time for the squeal to go away? could it have been a poor brake job? (I didn't do it)
I have 2013 GS350 I bought in October with 5k miles. Currently I have 14,500 miles on it today.
Every time I have a cold start on the car, When driving at low speeds and braking, it has a loud squealing noise. Once the car has been running and driving, it goes away and doesn't came back unless I park the car and get back in an hour or so later. I went to the dealer and the guy said it's "normal", said moisture gets in and needs a few minutes break apart and that's how Lexus designs their cars. Which is believe is BS.
Here is a video of the noise. This isn't as loud as I've heard it before. [URL] ....
I have recently replaced my stock pads with pbr ceramics, front and rear. now my rear brakes are squeeling loud everytime i back up. i have tried to file the edges, did not work. What to do? change pads?
View 6 RepliesI have a 06 accent sedan and I have been having some issues with the back brakes that were just replaced prior to the motor vehicle being done the end of June. I had the brakes replaced and everything was working fine up until the middle of last week; now the brakes in the back are squealing like the warning plates are rubbing together again (loud high pitch squealing) what could be causing this...I took it back to where I had the brakes replaced and they did a check and said that it did not look like anything was wrong and they asked me when my front brakes were replaced, I told him they were replaced last August when I have a issues with a caliper freezing up and had to replace everything in the front (brakes, caliper etc). So long story short he said to keep driving and see if you can tell if the squealing is coming from the front or the back and come back when its happening or if you can determine which one it is..
View 13 RepliesMy 2001 Prius makes this sound when the engine is running. All the battery lights are on all the time, I think it needs a new HV battery but I'm not sure if it's worth it. Perhaps the other battery is faulty I really don't know. All the engine lights are on and if the brake light comes on it starts shaking or the power steering fails or it just completely shuts off on the road no lights no power steering nothing. When that happens I use a battery booster that I keep in my trunk to get it going again but it's really dangerous to drive now.
View 3 RepliesI just bought a used 93 accord. The engine is in good shape and runs smoothly most of the time, but I have two issues.
First, when I start the engine cold, there is a very loud belt squealing for about 3 or 4 seconds. Is this a common problem and, if I isolate the belt at fault, what should I do about it?
Second, the engine revs (both audibly and on the tach) when I press on the brakes. I've been told by a friend it might be a vacuum leak?
I have been noticing a squealing sound that I believe is coming from the rear brakes. I only hear this when I back up form the garage and apply the brakes. This happens mostly when the weather is cold, and only when I first back from the garage. This sound can be loud at times. Took it to two different dealers, but they could not hear anything. Of course this only happens when I first drive the car, so no wonder they can not hear it. I have been reading about it, and it seems many people have had the same problem. Some say it is the brake pads, the rotor, etc., 2013 RX 350...
View 4 RepliesI have a hyundia elantra gt 03 auto at 111k. When I am at a certain speed I hear a faint squealing sound on the passenger side. It only does it only when I am on the gas between 35-45 mph. it's very faint but you can hear it if the window is down or the music is off. Could it be a belt?
I had my timing belt replaced at 95k so I don't think it would be that. I also had my serpentine belt replaced about 3 times already but every few months it starts squealing again
For example: When I pull out of my driveway in the morning and turn my steering wheel i hear a LOUD squealing and it stops after a few seconds. it only happens in the mornings when the car has been sitting all night.
Also when I run over a puddle and turn the wheel it squeals very loud for a few seconds. It sounds like that when i accelerate but its not as loud and it is constant endless i let off the gas. It does not happen at any other MPH only between 35-45 ....
Not sure if this is a normal characteristics of our Fsport brakes, but when I am in reverse and I apply the brakes I hear a squealing sound. Is that normal? By the way my car just hit 20k miles
View 9 RepliesI bought my 06 Corolla LE last week and just started hearing a nasty squeaking sound whenever I applied the brakes. I took it to the dealer today and 4 hours later he calls me and tells me that he had to readjust my back brakes and lube them up and it should be fine..About a half hour into driving the car around town I start hearing this noise again. Now he's telling me to bring back in the morning to see what the issue is.
My question is besides the brake pads and rotors which were checked by another mechanic that said they were good what the hell could be the issue?
After driving my 2007 sonata for around 10 minutes, there is a very high pitched squealing sound that is intermittent and stops when the brakes are tapped. I was told it may be due to a "brake sensor"??
View 20 Replies4000 miles on my CW Golf R - zero problems until this morning. WILD, Loud sqealing, screeching metal on metal or maybe stone on metal sound coming from front passenger wheel. at first i was positive it was a pebble caught b/t the inside rotor and heat shield - i took the tire off and nothing there.. Also only really does it when I turn RIGHT.
View 13 RepliesTruck details:
2008 f350 6.4 290,000 klm
DPF and full EGR delete
K&N intake
IDP custom street tune
Loud squealing noise that happens when cold or at temp.
2000 to 2500 rpm's to 3000 rpm then it goes away
Happens only when accelerating over 50% anything under and the noise doesn't happen.
15 to 20 pounds of boost
Turbo sounds good
No codes
All plumbing looks sealed and tight
Fuel coolant res is full and clean
I'm thinking it could be the lift pump dying or having trouble supplying the fuel demand. Started after I did the cold air intake....
99% sure it's time for brakes. Sounds like the wear indicators are squealing. I'll pop the tires off tomorrow and take a close look. Found a thread on here about doing brakes. Sounds pretty easy.
View 9 RepliesI have Camry 2002 LE which has 110000 miles on it. After last winter in Pittsburgh, first time I drove it for 200 miles continuously and all of sudden the engine started making very loud sound after 2-3 hrs drive and I had to pull it off.
When you give more gas, the sound increases even further. It is very load and unbearable. I called AAA and mechanic advised something wrong with engine and I cannot drive it anymore so have to tow it.
The sound is coming from engine and it is very very load. I will take it to mechanic tomorrow but what would have gone wrong. Is it the end of my car life?
So, my 2012 Prius has 61,000 miles and I started hearing some terrible squealing from my rear brakes. This weekend, I decided to take the tires off and investigate. Turns out, that my rear pads were worn to metal.
I switched the pads with new ones. The rotor was still new and didn't need replacing. Torqued the caliper bolt to 25ft/lb and put it back together. However at the end, I forgot to put back on the two wire clips take keep the brake pads apart!
Do I need to put these clips on? I'm too lazy to take my tires off again.
Lesson learned: Turn clockwise and PUSH the rear piston at the same time to get it to go back in. Turning it alone does nothing.
I drive my golf maybe 180-250Km everyday, and there are countless areas where something could occur but for about a month now I am hearing a strange sound coming from where I suppose the suspension would be, (I don't know for sure because I am in the car when I hear it) but its happening when i go over speed bumps, even going less than 10kph.... and when ever i hit a crappy road with a lot of potholes and bumps. it sounds like a scraping noise of like maybe the shock absorber or something along those lines. I would go to VW but the dealer in my area likes to void warranties, and is very difficult in giving away things for free/cheap. it getting consistently louder and is starting to worry me. should i be worried or is it a simple fix?
