I have a 2010 Prius III I bought used the other day and all of a sudden I'm getting intermittent shaking / rough starting sometimes after the car sits for a while. However, after that happens it seems to run and drive just fine. At first it didn't throw any codes or anything but now Check engine light on with 3 codes.
View 8 RepliesI have a 1995 Lexus ES300 with 130,000 miles. This car is basically a rebadged Camry of the same vintage. Occasionally, when the car sits for extended periods (overnight or while I'm at work) and I try to start it, I get nothing. Not a click--nothing. This will never happen if I pop into a grocery store or other errands that are an hour or less.I've tried jiggling the floor shifter to see if it was the neutral safety switch and no luck. I've also tried putting the car in neutral with no results. I can also move the steering wheel rapidly left-right and push hard down onto the brake pedal with no obvious results. Eventually after 10 tries or so the starter motor will engage and it just starts. Could it be the ignition (where I put the key in)?
View 7 RepliesI have a 2001 Ford Taurus SEL that runs perfectly fine — most of the time. About once every month or so, I'll be driving around, running errands or whatever, and I'll get into the car and it won't start. It wants to turn over but sputters like it's just getting little bursts of fuel. No warning lights or check engine light come on, I've tried jump starting, resetting the emergency fuel shutoff, swapping relays, it's been to the shop multiple times — they just end up cleaning the fuel filter — I've tried everything I can think of. The kicker is, if I let the car sit for an hour or two, it will start right back up like nothing ever happened.
View 3 RepliesI'm driving a 03 1.8 jetta with no mods. Whenever my Jetta sits for more than 24hrs, I have a hard time starting it. It turns over just fine but sputters to a stall once it fires. I do this 3 times before it revs high and stabilizes.
I changed out the coil packs, fuel filter and spark plugs. I can hear the fuel pump prime before starting so I assume that is working fine.
I dont notice any issues while driving either. Its just the start up. It particularly acts up in cooler temps and higher humidity (raining days too).
After starting my Prius the engine was knocking and shaking. After running the engine for 30 - 45 seconds it operated normally. The car is always parked in our garage and the outside temperature was approx 32 degrees or a few colder. I have 30750 miles on the car.
View 1 RepliesI have a Prius III 2011. I've had it for 10,000 miles and have had no problems at all. Yesterday, when I started the car, it made a loud rumbling and the engine shook, when it transitioned from the electric motor to the gas engine.
It did that several times when I restarted and then went away. The problem happened on the transition each time. Electric motor came on perfectly and then ten seconds later it was like an earth quake under the hood.
My dad watched the engine and said that it shook really hard. At first he thought it might be a fan belt but then he said it seemed more like water or something may have gotten into the gas tank and it was choking...
My 2010 has the intermittent noise when starting in the cold. Brought car to dealer with printout of the TSB from December and they will not repair it unless they duplicate the noise. Also I read about a rear motor mount to be replaced.
View 1 RepliesWe've got a 2011 Prius with a little over 24k miles on it . For the last few months we've been having issues with it starting. First I thought the remote barriers were dying so I replaced them , I thought my wife might have been trying to start it incorrectly till the problem happened to me a few weeks ago. What happens is you try to start it (foot on brake, press power button) and all the warming lights pop up , radio turns on , navigation turns on but car doesn't start. This morning it happend just once , yesterday I had to try it maybe 10x before it finally started up. The dealership had it last Saturday and of course it started every time for them and they couldn't duplicate the problem , they also said they ran whatever tests they do on it and it didn't turn up a problem. FWIW we had the software recall update done in June.

View 2 RepliesI have noticed in certain circumstances that the engine seems to be in a resonance where it is shaking noticeably and getting worse not better. It happens in two situations.
One is after gliding and slowing to make a turn (with the engine off). As I am exiting the turn and hit the gas the car shakes a lot for about a second or two, then smooths out.
The Ex has started intermittent (less intermittent now) shaking while driving down the road. Not very noticeable at low speeds 20 or less. Idles smooth. Took it in and had tires checked, balanced, rotated, and aligned.
No difference. It was so bad my wife got pulled over by a police officer on the freeway here. He was extremely nice, looked under the car and suggested as possibilities. The locking Hubs on the front (4x4), U-Joints, Axle issue, Stuck in 4 wheel drive, or bad power steering pump.
Once she picked me up and we drove home from our dinner, I got pulled over. When it is in its violent shaking mode, it pulls to the right. when the shaking subsides (for an unknown reason) the pull to the right is gone. I do not notice anything that causes it to start or stop the shaking.

Just recently after owning the Prius V5 since last June it has begun making sounds seeming to originate from the front end making a creaking noise when we first start up at slow speed. Do we need to be concerned? Once the has motor begins we no longer hear the sound.

View 18 RepliesI looked over at my car and noticed the driver's rear side of the car sits lower than the other. I tried turning the car around to see if it was the driveway. It was not. I parked the car flat and took a tape measure and measured from the ground to the uppermost part of the wheel well and the rear drivers side is 2 foot 2 inches, the rear passenger side is 2 foot 4 inches. So the one side is sitting 2 inches lower than the other. Could it just be sag from the roads/ only having one person in the car, I'm not light either. Have 56k on the car.

View 3 RepliesAbout 6 weeks ago, I started my car and it started, but when it did it shook really hard until I turned the engine off. I started it again a few minutes later, and it started just fine; it was a little rough at first, but smoothed out after about 15 seconds. I drove it without any further issue until about 3 weeks ago. It cranked and shook like hell again, without starting. A few minutes later, I tried again, and it started up smoothly. A week ago, I got in the car to come back from the store, and it cranked, didn't shake, but wouldn't start. When the tow truck guy told me my overage for a tow was going to be 105.00 for 12 miles, I told him he was insane and cancelled my tow and then magically, my car started up. I figured it's a fuel or spark problem, and changed the plugs and wires since it's about time to do that anyway. A few days go by, damn car won't start again.
So this is the pattern: Car starts and runs totally fine, except occasionally when it doesn't want to start and only cranks and shakes, and then you leave it alone for a random amount of time (from 5 minutes to a half hour), and it eventually starts. I thought it was only when it was at 1/4 tank or below and was thinking maybe the fuel pump, but today I have 2/3 of a tank and it happened again. Check engine light is only on when it won't start, when it starts up fine the light is off. It's happening more frequently now and I can't afford to keep swapping parts only to find out it's not fixed, so I need to get it figured out. 2004 Hyundai Accent 1.6L....
In the last 8 months I'm having a shaking of the car when starting in first gear (manual trans).
I thought it was a loose engine mount - had it checked and one replaced and still the shaking is there.
I notice it is more pronounced when the engine is hot and starting on a decline.
Since I've had this Camry (almost 8 yrs), I've had the clutch changed 2x. First time was just wear and tear. The person who replaced it put the fly wheel on backwards! Drove it for 3 years until it just broke. Replaced by another shop who couldn't believe I got three years out of the bad job.
At any rate, this doesn't feel like a clutch-related issue. No slippage feeling or other issues when moving through the gears at higher speeds. But maybe they did a bad job too?
My 2004 toyota rav4, manual transmission, 70,000 miles has been problem free. Now when i turn the key , nothing, no sound , dead. sometimes the 2nd or 3rd try 'it'll start right up, and run like nothing's wrong. other times will not start at all. 2 hrs later , try it and starts right up,. the battery has been replaced and it changed nothing. The mechanics are stumped and say they can't do anything till the problem repeats itself, and it starts fine, at their garage. I've been stranded and don't want that to happen again. What's wrong? The clutch switch?
View 4 RepliesSo i drive a 2001 F150 4.6L and over the last couple of years it has started pulling down and shaking heavily. I have taken it to mechanics and it always gave a code as a miss. well we replaced the coils and the plugs and of course it still has the problem. finally we did a compression test and it shows that #3 and #5 have no compression and the mechanic said it was either a blown head gasket, a valve or a cracked head. it has 230K miles on it so i was wondering what your thoughts on it were and also if it would be cheaper just to swap the motor.
View 2 Replies2004 Lexus GX470, for the last month experienced intermittent starting problems. Turn the key, one slight click first try,nothing after. Disconnect battery cable and reconnect, starts every time.
Then while driving a week ago the vehicle died, all electrical seemed fine, more like fuel cutoff. Now every attempt to start is the same sequence of events, first try one click. Second car turns over and won't start or if it does runs rough for a few minutes and dies.
Third try, the starter won't disengage until key is turned to off position.
Possibly the ECM? Immobilizer? It's obviously not a starter problem as disconnecting the battery caused it to start and now when it does start it runs rough and then dies.
I have a 2003 Saab 9-3 convertible that is having intermittent starting problems. It seems to happen when the car has been driven long distances and the weather is hot or when it is raining. It cranks fine but will not start. When it is hot, I open the hood and it starts after about 10 minutes. When it is wet is starts after being cranked for a white. My mechanic has replaced the ignition cassette and the spark plugs and it has not fixed the problem.
