Some part of the hybrid system makes a moderate to loud screeching noise when the car starts moving initially. It's gotten to the point where people are staring at me when I pull away in parking lots because it's so loud.
- Do the gen II cars also make this noise?
- Why don't the Lexus hybrids make this noise?
- Is there anything that can be done to lessen the noise?
Just purchased a used 2008 prius with 80,000 miles on it. Braking system makes slight grinding noises when getting below around 10mph. I know the brakes are different, so I'm not sure if this is normal or if it means my brake pads need replacing? Car didn't come with an owners manual .
View 6 RepliesTwo weeks ago a large, industrial truck dropped a piece of bent steel pipe on the interstate in front of my 2010, 50k miles, Prius and (sadly) I was forced to hit or swerve into rush hour traffic and cause an accident. It tore up a good part of the cooling system and did some body damage. Of course I didn't know this at the time, but it began to overheat, so I pulled off the freeway and had it towed to a body shop. After about ten days, I got my Prius back.

View 4 RepliesSince the summer started, our hybrid battery has been acting different - when the AC is on (even on low), the battery starts to go down quickly! It happens when we are not driving, but standing in traffic or parked. We just changed our 12V battery and I though it would work, but it didn't work much. In order for it to charge up, we have to keep driving. Is that normal? If not, what can be the problem? What can happen when the hybrid battery will loose charge?

View 11 RepliesI just bought a used 2012 Toyota Prius iTech from a country town 3 hours away. About an hour into the drive home, the display informed me to "Check Hybrid System" and then "Check PCS System". The car continued to function for a little while, then eventually lost acceleration, so I pulled over. I turned it off and on again; the warning light remained but the car started and continued to work, but soon after I lost acceleration again. This happened one more time.
Then I Googled the problem and discovered that you could "turn it off and on again three times to reset the computer". I did this and the problem disappeared and did not resurface for the remainder of the trip, and has not happened again since.
I was trying to install the invisicord cable for my escort radar detector thru the auto dimming/homelink mirror, I shorted it and homelink no longer has any power, a couple minutes later i got a check hybrid system.
Now question how do i restore power to the homelink mirror, is there a fuse to replace? And that warning and all the other warnings that i got related to the short. I read somewhere here that if power to the homelink mirror was off that you get no power to some systems, not sure where is that post, cant find it the car starts.
So a little over a month ago, I was driving my 2010 Prius (about 42k miles) when the Check Hybrid System light came on. I lost power and my car was stuck on the road, as I was unable to get it into neutral. So I called a tow truck and was towed to my local dealership. The dealership ran some tests, thought it might have been the throttle body. They switched my throttle body with a loaner prius to see if this fixed the problem. The new throttle body worked in my car and my throttle body was put into the loaner and functioned fine. Then they ended up fixing a TSB for the electronics in the car. I was told the problem was resolved and I could pick up the car about a week later.
After picking up the car a week later, before I could even drive away from the dealership, the Check Hybrid System warning came on again. I talked with the service manager and left my car to be fixed again. They checked all the systems and were still unsure what the problem was. Eventually they made sure all the connectors were properly seated and test drove the car and ensured the problem was gone. About two weeks later, I was told the car was fixed and I could pick it up.
After picking up the car, I was still unsure the problem was fixed, but I was told that was all I could do. After having the car, for about a 1.5 weeks I was on the highway. Once again, the check hybrid system light came on and I lost engine power. Luckily, I was able to pull over from the left lane without causing an accident. Once again, I had the car towed to the dealer and now I am waiting to hear back from them.
2013 Prius C THREE 67k miles
Got out of my car after using it friday. hopped back in to go to work tuesday was getting," Check Hybrid System, stop and pull over immediately". I put about 30k miles a year on my car so i run it hard and I am probably due for oil change and tranny fluid drain and fill but other than that because the car was working fine friday. I tried going into accessory mode then holding brakes and powering up, I forget what that's called, but no luck
Towed it to my mechanic, he said that he was getting generator errors (and tsp or tsb things?) and that he could most likely do the work but that I should make the dealer do it because it may be under warranty and didn't charge anything. So got it towed to the dealer and after the hybrid tech got in they said they see some generator error but they can't reset it. But also mentioned they got the car to come on.
I have a 2010 IV Prius that has been having the following issues starting up / turning off:
On February 4th in the evening: car wouldn't start. Started on 5th try - showed "HYBRID SYSTEM OVERHEAT."
On February 15th in the evening: car wouldn't start. During multiple attempts to start hybrid screen to the right of speedometer flickered / went in and out and was faint. Started on 5-6th try.
On February 16th in the afternoon: car wouldn't start. Hybrid screen to the right of speedometer flickered and went in and out during startup attempts. Eventually car started at 5-6th try - but display to the right of speedometer did not come on at all. Car felt like it was running on engine only.
Took car to Toyota dealership. They had it for 2 weeks and could not figure out what the issue was. Car did not show any error codes. Said they did not experience issues either. Gave me the car back.
On March 3rd, as soon as I got the car back and while still in the dealership parking lot, I pressed the start button with my foot on the brake and only the AC / radio came on. Called over service advisor and when he came tried it the car started up fine.
I jumpstarted a friends car and now I'm getting a check hybrid system warning and my 2010 prius won't start.
View 19 Repliesmy 2010 Prius III was working fine yesterday, but today when I try to start it it did not start. no green or abmer light on the push-start button. I tried few times, but no luck. I got the key from my pocket and got it closer to the push start button and I start hear the normal noise that happen when I opn the door, but the noise was very low and the internal light was very dimmed as if the battery dying. after few attempt to start, the car start at last, but the hubird screen where show the system on the dashboard was off. I try to change the display of the hybrid system but nothing start. the GPS screen display "no DVD MAP inserted" and seem frozen and not allow me to turn off the screen or press any other button.
View 12 Replies2001 Prius. Within 15 seconds of starting the engine, I captured the screeching sound from the engine bay. Noise went away after about 20 seconds. New serpentine belt and new 12v battery installed. Pass dealer 27-point check. Transmission fluid, inverter fluid, high voltage battery were replaced about 18,000 miles ago. Current mileage 174,000.
Noise is not from the serpentine belt. I attached a mp3 file of the sound. "2001 Prius Noise.MP3" ..... Which component is making this noise?
Seems to be happening more and more frequently...I start the car and all lights come on except Ready aka the hybrid system... It takes many tries, and what the problem is?!
View 11 RepliesI was going through a bad day today with my 2010 Prius Gen 3. I was on highway driving at 68MPH behind another car, at the time I step down on gas pedal for overtaking, all a sudden both "Check PCS system" and "Check Hybrid system" appears on the Console display and gas pedal had no response from the engine at all. The car was not moving and I had to stop aside and "P" the car. I tried to turn off the car, turn back on more than 10 times. Both warning signal "Check PCS system" and "Check Hybrid system" display on console and the car can not go into "ready" mode hence the car can not drive. I could put shift to "P","N" but just not "D". Had to call tow truck to tow back to toyota dealer, and they said will look into it on Monday.

After filling the gas I read similar threads on here and trouble shooted the battery. 12v Battery tested good, so now what is the next step? I also did a reset on the 12v battery and that didn't work.

View 8 RepliesI have a 2004 bought in 2003. It recently logged its first 100k miles. My problem with it is not easy to describe. It is actually running more like a non-hybrid car. I can feel and tell the hybrid system is operational, and I can hear the electric motor whine when coasting, down, etc. However, I don't think it is running as it should or as it used to. It happened on highway while cruising about 70 mph. I hit the accelerator to pass someone, and I felt that something changed. I'll try to describe it: think of a half-clogged pipe. The water can barely gets past the obstruction. You keep applying pressure, and suddenly the clog dissolves under pressure, and water begins to flow freely, and the pressure goes down. So it felt like that. Now the accelerator pedal is lighter, car is faster to respond, yet I think something is wrong because the car isn't itself anymore.
I don't like problems like these because they are very difficult to diagnose, let alone fix. For a while I also have not heard the inverter pump whine after shutting the car off as I did in the past, but the last time I got out of the car today I heard it. I believe it was replaced five years ago after a collision with a Trailblazer wiped out half of the front end ( but with no power train damage). I checked the VIN for the inverter pump campaign, but my VIN was not in the range.
Right now my problem is that the car feels a lot faster than it has ever been. When I lift off the accelerator, it doesn't begin to coast as it used to. No warning light of any kind out of the ordinary is present on the dash, although it did have the red triangle on during start up with a message about the parking gear not being engaged properly. That warning went away after the change in performance occurred. Related?
I guess I will take it to the dealer to see if there are any codes stored. After my 30 mile commute this morning, no whining, buzzing or any kind of noise was present after I shut off the car and I got out. There is still no warning light.
Just started up my car and the "Check Hybrid warning system" came on, along with a check engine light. The car starts and moves, but I'm unsure if I should drive it to the dealer two miles away without doing any further damage to the vehicle or have it towed. The car has 130000 miles and is serviced every 5000 at the dealer with all recommended maintenance performed.
View 11 RepliesI have a 2013 Prius Persona with about 5,300 miles on the vehicle. Just recently had the 5,000 mile service taken care of at a local toyota dealership. The very next day I tried to start my vehicle with no prevail. My instrument panel indicates "check hybrid system" (!) the car will not start, nor will it shift into drive or reverse, only into the neutral position. Made several attempts to turn vehicle on and off and tried to jump start. Still no luck. Had the car towed back to the dealership. Mechanics are still trying to identify the problem. What may be the cause?
