Prius (Gen 3) :: High Pitch Noise With Windows Down
Oct 6, 2011
It was a very nice week and rolled my windows down at Disney resorts. I noticed a very high pitch noise that the brakes did not seem to impact.

View 11 RepliesI have a 2007 Prius 3 Touring Edition. I purchased it new in Dec. 2006. I have had NO issues with my favorite car of all time, and currently have 90,600 miles. I have noticed a high pitch for a long time coming from the transaxle during acceleration. The pitch is only present when MG1 or MG2 is engaged. The pitch stops in stealth mode. My finance also has a 2007 Prius, and her's does not make the noise or whine when I drive her vehicle.
I have changed the transaxle fluid at 65,000 miles, but I did not see the plug when it was changed so I don't know how much, if any, shavings were stuck to the magnetic bolt. If you are wondering, yes, the high pitched noise was present before the fluid change. Also, as I accelerate and increase speed, the noise pitch increases.
Is my transaxle displaying a tell-tale sign of imminent failure?
I have a 2009 Gen. II with 48000 miles on it and it started having a high pitch noise when driving. Thought it was wind noise at first but does it at low speeds also. When you roll the right passenger side window down you can hear it much louder sounds like it is coming from the right front.
View 7 RepliesI hear weird buzzing noise when driving it. It sounds pretty high pitched.
My Prius is a Gen3 2015 model 2.
I tried to start my 2005 Prius this morning and a high pitched noise started (the same noise that happens when you hit the power button without having your foot on the brake). The emergency light was locked on as well as a message on the display screen about setting the emergency brake. This has happened one other time an after about two minutes the noise stopped, and I was able to start the car. This time the noise and lock remained for about 20 minutes until we disconnected the battery in the back. We re-attached the battery after we removed the ignition key and after a few moments all the power seemed to be gone. The fob doesn't work at all and the electronic lights and dash flickered and faded out. Our gut instinct is that the battery needs to be replaced. Was it the 12V battery?
View 5 RepliesMy Pruis v makes a humming noise. Sometimes. Doesn't happen all the time. Don't know when it will happen. When it does happen, the car makes a humming noise. High pitch and low pitch-no longer than 2 minutes. Seems to be coming from the right side of the vehicle. It is embarassing when we have friends in the car, the noise comes on , and the friend asks, 'what's that noise' and i shrug my shoulders-i don't know.Took it to service. Manager said he has to hear it to determine what/where it is coming from. If it isn't making the noise, he can't tell me where it is coming from. Took it back today and now we have a loaner so he can drive it for a couple of days to try to hear the noise.
View 7 RepliesI have a 1995 Lexus ES300 with 130,000 miles on it. When I reverse, I get a low-pitch growling and as as soon as I apply the brakes by a high-pitch, ungodly screech. This noise is definitely coming from the rear wheel areas. I'm not sure which tire is the culprit (I hear both sides from while listening from both the inside and outside). It happens frequently but is particularly bad on rainy, snowy, misty, or high humidity days. Two years ago I replaced the pads and rotors. At this point, the pads look to have about 40% life on them yet. This problem started happening about a year ago.
My initial thoughts were that it was just rusting because of the frequency on high moisture days. But both noises are way too loud for that. My second speculation was that the emergency brake was catching, but after examining it I think not. I've taken the entire assembly (brakes, rotors calipers, and emergency brake) at each tire apart and looked for any obvious issues that look incorrect. No luck. I've also applied brake quiet with similar results. Now my thoughts are that the low pitch is the rotors being warped. But that doesn't explain the screech and why it only occurs in reverse.
I have a 2002 Corolla with about 180,000 miles that has been well maintained, but I know very little about cars.
Over the past months, I've noticed the engine noise on acceleration sounds a bit louder than I would expect it to, and it seems to be getting louder over time. It's slow changing, so I'm a little unsure. And occasionally I wonder if I don't hear a sound that shouldn't be there, though I couldn't describe it yet. Mechanic said the acceleration noise is normal at start-up for older cars until they get warm, but this happens even after I've been driving a while. Worth the $100 for an engine checkup?
Also, the A/C doesn't seem to be the strongest and has a high pitch noise when I run it. Normal?
My friend and I both have the MK4 R32. He had a bunch of stuff replaced in the engine. (a bunch of plastic parts that are super expense, the timing chain, something related to the guide, basically the plastics that holds the engine cushion/absorb) Anyways, his engine sounds great and quiet at the same time with a little high pitch noise when the RPM is hanging in between 1K and 2K.
Our cars were in the garage and I did the same thing and it sounded NOT quiet, a lot more noise than his. There was an obvious difference in noise coming from the engine with the hood open. I do have cams and a light weight pulley. Can that have an affect on the engine noise? If I am not making sense, then i should probably video record the sound or take it to the dealership for a check up. Also, I am at 93K.
I've got a 2006 Prius - yesterday afternoon my wife and I noticed a high pitched whine coming from the front (maybe right hand side) of the car - we don't hear it until we reach about 50mph. It gets louder as we increase speed and then trails off when you step off the accelerator and can't hear it all below 48-45mph.
We bought the car new and are familiar with the various noises the car makes, but this one is new - never heard it before yesterday.
2008 Yaris high pitch noise when I used heater this morning.
View 1 RepliesI have a 93 sl1, about a week ago it made a high pitch squealing noise for a few seconds before the car died. after that it would not start. I checked all the pulleys, they were fine.
View 2 RepliesSitting in parking lot listening to ipod thru aux port opened door to access door pocket and sound system went nuts. I now have a high pitch noise coming through all speakers on all settings even with audio off.
View 8 Replies2003 trailblazer Lt . when the motor is running the high pitch noise is coming from the fuel filter / fuel line area, if i crawl under there whil itd running i can get it to change noises when im grabbing the lines and filter but but it seems like it changes thje most when i mess with the hose where you hook a pressure gage up to it or bleed it
View 2 RepliesNew 2012 SE, I noticed a high pitch noise coming from the rear side of my car. The high pitched noise/whine happens as soon as the car is running, and continues until it is turned off. I can hear it every time when standing idle or at lower speed. So I brought it into the VW dealership, and my technician: "found noise described is the high pressure pump in the tank".
We tested another 2012 Passat SE and we found the exactly same(even louder) high pitched noise coming out from the high pressure pump. I was told by a service manager that it is a standard high pressure pump noise for 2012 Passat. Well I don't think that any high pitch ultra whine/noise should be a standard feature in any car...It is very, very annoying noise...
Whenever I start my R32, I have some high pitch buzz noise coming from the rear, stay and never go away while even driving.
View 16 RepliesMy Civic started to make high pitch noise when turning right or left, and also when accelerating. It makes more noise when I keep the wheels turning but ceases the noise when I let the handle go and go straight. When accelerating, it ceases the noise as it reaches 30 mph or so. It has got 93000 miles on it. It started the noise about 10 months ago and I feel like it increased the noise over the time. I don't drive everyday and I try to drive my wife's Prius when I drive since it has better gas milage. But this noise is quite annoying and wonder what it is.
View 6 RepliesThe car required a new water pump, the mechanic suggested to also replace the serpentine belt because of age - after a week the car made high pitch noise when started, the noise stopped after the initial start-at the shop it was explained that a new serpentine belt requires tightening after the car has been driven for a while - like a week- is this correct or was the belt not installed correctly....
View 11 RepliesI have this whistling noise coming from the front area of my truck (97 dodge dakota) 4X4. The noise sounds like air at high pitch (just my opinion and friends), happens around 30 to 40 mph when you hear the whistling noise. I've taped all holes and gaps that might be causing the sound but no avail. I've had a friend look at it, that's a fire truck mechanic and no luck and he said it didn't sound like wheel bearing problem.
View 1 RepliesYesterday I heard a high-pitch noise/squeal coming from the vehicle and after some searching, figured out it was from the ventilation fan. It went away after 5 mins of being on but is rather annoying. Not too keen to take it in as I'm sure the dashboard will need to be removed and afraid it won't go back in perfectly.
View 7 RepliesWhen the car is cold & first started, the high pitch noise by the fuel injectors is the loudest. When it warms up the noise is reduced quit a bit.
I thought maybe the fuel injector O-rings are bad, but the car idles and runs fine ( no error codes). Maybe the intake manifold gasket, but the car idles and runs fine. It is a weird noise.
