Prius (Gen 3) Fuel :: 2013 - Does The Car Always Warm Up After Each Start Up?
Jun 25, 2013
Well I bought my Prius 2013 II about a month ago so I have been learning alot about the car as I go and reading how to effectively get the best mileage from the car. I have only filled it up once so far but one thing I am trying to figure out is the mileage at start up. I have read that you get the worst mileage when you first start up the car after a nice period of no driver which I understand. They say 5-10 minutes of driving and it should be fine.
But my thing is it seems like every time I start my car up it goes through the whole slow mpg start up. Is that normal? Let me give you a example. I had to drive from work to a movie theater which was about 9 miles and I averaged around 68 mpg. Yes right when I started my car after a 8 hour shift the bars on dashboard next to the MPG were going up and down and would stay around 25-30 mpg for the first few minutes but would eventually go back to 99.9 when i was coasting.
Well anyways I drive to the movie theater just to get out and get a gift card for fathers day. So I am only gone for maybe 3 minutes. I get back into my car and start it up and my fuel consumption plummets to 20-30 mpg for a few minutes before it goes back into warm up mode. I was told your car should only do that your initial warm up after it hasnt been started but it seems like when I do many errands and I have to turn my car off for whatever reason. My gas plummets until I get the ball rolling again. IS this normal?

It seems like it takes an awfully long time for the good mileage to get going from a cold start - even when it's warm outside. The last 5 miles of my commute are great, but the first 10 miles not so much. How much effect does ambient air temperature have on this process.

I have a recently rebuilt 400 with a mild cam and Tmeyers flat top pistons. The carb is a 600cfm edlebrock that was bought new and installed a few months ago.
The issue I'm having is if I'm driving around and shut it off to run in the store its hard to start when I come back. I end up having to floor the gas to get it to start. When it's cold I tap the gas and turn the key and she lights right off. Could this be an issue with vapor lock? Why does it go away if I floor the gas?
Only other thing going on is when accelerating the engine runs noticeably smoother above 2700rpm. It's a little boggy below that. Probably two different problems but I figured I would throw it out there.

I have noticed that due to warmer weather and more Prius C owners that the MPG's are going up. No many in the 40's mpg anymore. I enjoy people posting and obtaining over the EPA of 50 mpg, the 60 mpg figure appears to be fairly easy
to obtain with the Prius C.
On our Prius the last mpg was 52.3 calculated this is real world driving with my wife driving 75% of the time and she does not drive strictly for MPG's.
I believe we should all take a minute and pat ourselves on the back as all the countless gallons of gas we our saving and will be saving for our friends and neighbors who have no choice but perhaps to drive large cars and pickup trucks...

Here in the northwest the weather has been dry and temps in the 40's to over 60 degrees. The mpg's have increased about 5-7 mpg over just a month ago.

I can't believe what I'm saying as I always say to start driving (slowly) to warm up the engine. Besides, who has the time?
But, this AM, I was stopped as soon as I exited my driveway as big garbage trucks blocked my cul-de-sac street. The engine went through the warm up cycle as I waited stopped and later, I went through my usual commute.
The thing is the commute ended at 67 MPG (indicated). I usually get "only" 60 MPG on the very same route, unless the engine is prewarmed before driving and I get exactly 67 MPG. I always clear MPG trip counter before driving on a daily bases.

how much fuel is consumed during a typical warm-up period for the Gen III? I realize there are variables related to ambient temperature etc..
my interest is to get a baseline consumption figure to compare warm-up saving devices/techniques against.

I have a new 2013 prius 4 that now has 5400 miles.
I changed oil at 1200 miles and had the dealer put in 4 qts. I am running 40psi in front and 38psi in rear tires. I am unable to get more than 43-44 mpg on the display no matter what type of driving I do. The dealer tells me there is nothing wrong with the car and the problems lie with the gasoline and the amount of ethanol that is added.
I traded in a 2010 Prius with 55000 miles and was getting 47-48mpg on the display and actual 44-45 mpg doing the math.

how can I unsure someone won't drive off with car when I start up to warm it? I mean I can't lock the door with it running. Not going to install a remote start (if that's even work) Wish it would not drive when put into gear to ward off thief, without key fob. Is there a solution? 2015 regular Prius.

After 2 fill-ups, I am only getting 41 mpg.
I drive a mixture of mountains, freeways, and streets.
I do use ev and Eco most of the time.

So we bought our 2013 prius v 3 last week and have since put on just under 300miles. This is our family vehicle but most of the miles have come from me driving it to work. My commute is in the Phoenix area and the temps have been in the 30-40s in the morning and 60s when I leave. Terrain is flat, and mostly fwy, maybe 70% hwy and 30% streets. My gripe is that I have never seen the avg get over 38mpg. I have not taken it out of Eco mode the past 4 days.
Should I wait till after the first full up to start getting real numbers?

I have a 2013 Prius V 2 which I love. From the very first tank I've managed to exceed 50 mpg on average (one fill-up was 49) and usually these days I get 51 or 52 mpg. Not too shabby for a car rated at 42-44, and with pretty much constant use of AC and daytime headlights. Overall, I am very pleased.
I would love to get it up to 55 mpg, but it seems impossible. Sometimes the display actually reads 55 for a while, but then I hit a few hills and lights and it gets dragged back down again. Truth to tell, my wife doesn't hyper-mile, so that hurts a bit, but to my surprise sometimes she comes home and the mpg is actually higher than I last left it at!
I do the pulse-and-glide and I am constantly backing off the accelerator to stay in EV mode. Any other tips for breaking through the plateau?

I own a Prius C 2013. I read about Pulse and Glide, and I also watched youtube about it. I somehow have never seen a situation where there is no arrow in the Energy Monitor. The best I have ever seen is arrow coming out of the battery only which is EV mode. Some people say 35-45 is the best speed for P&G, but I never see "no arrow". What speed makes the car run without arrow?

I changed timing belt and water pump DIY back in Oct 2015. Ever since then, I get rough idling (car kind of vibrate and engine kind of struggling) after warm start (no problem with cold starts, it did stall once after the warm start).
Two days ago, I got a P0000 code, I thought it was due to low oil (happened before, I topped off oil 2500 miles ago), so I changed oil and filter. No problem yesterday, but today on my way to work. I got the p0000 code again.

I just purchased a new 2013 Prius Persona. I am used to the Prius line as I previously had a 2005 Prius. I have only had the car 4 days but I noticed that the gas mileage is less than what it was on my old Prius. I mostly drive highway at roughly 65 mph. My driving style is the same as it was with the old car. I am getting less than 40 mpg; with my old car I would get roughly 43-45 mpg. Will this improve as the car breaks in or could something be wrong with the car?

Just started this. The car starts normal and runs great until it gets to temp or about 20 miles, then it begins bogging down. Has no power under load,(going up hill or giving extra gas), will load up then backfire, slowly losing power and speed, then cannot get gas to it at all, eventually shutting down. After sitting for a few hours will do the same thing again.

I was a proud owner of this 2013 F150 3.7L, when i bought it brand new, but now after 30000 miles, or after last oil change the engine is making an inconsistent tick sound when warm. The sound can be somewhat compared to parts of exhaust cooling down because it blends in with that sound pretty well. The sound might have been present before the oil change however I have not noticed any sounds until after the oil change was done.
The sound is an inconsistent but repetitive tick, I mean tick-5second break-double tick-3second break-tick-10second break. Sound is present only when warm at around 500rpm and is harder to notice if engine is revved to like 2000rpm, but by increasing engine speed the sound is also more intense and faster. No mods done to the truck, not driven hard. I did put premium gas couple times.
There is no sound after starting the engine in a situation where the truck was sitting in a driveway overnight, even by the time i get to work (5km highway and 5km city) driving it moderately it does not always make the sound by the time i get to work. So now i suspect three things.
1. I have been idling my car a lot and sometimes used the cheapest gas from some no name gas stations.
2. When oil gets warm it gets thin and then it is somehow causing this sound.
3. There is just something wrong with the engine.

Several time lately I've gotten in to go to work and the battery shows for half sometimes 3/4 of charge, but it will not go into EV mode. But I can be in town driving and it will go into EV mode with only 2 bars of charge. Whats up with that.
