Prius (Gen 3) :: Energy Monitor - ICE And Motor Driving Wheels Without Any Battery Power
May 30, 2012
Is it normal for the Prius energy monitor to be showing that the ICE and motor are driving the wheels without any battery power? How can the motor drive the wheels without any battery being drawn going up a hill?

Recently I changed the 12 volt battery of my Prius 2012. Now the Energy Monitor arrows are missing. When the car is moving there is not arrows displaying. The only thing that appears is the battery charging, I can see when is low and full, but that's it. How can I turn on the animation?

So I'm doing a 24hour test drive on a 2014 Prius Two that may be replacing my 2007 Prius Touring (aka Package 5) that has a failing hybrid battery and so far I'm happy. I miss having a backup camera and premium audio but at $17000 I don't want to pay any more. Right now I just have a simple question... how do I show the energy monitor on the dash (top screen)? I even downloaded the manual but when I press the Display button on the steering wheel the only thing I can get to is "SETTINGS 3.11.16". I went into settings but didn't find anything that stood out... so I'm lost already...

I have a 2011 Prius with 75000miles. The energy monitor (car icon with ICE, Electric motor, and battery) no longer displays the arrows showing energy flow. The wheels on the car are still animated when the vehicle is in motion.

I'm driving a loaner Gen 3, and for some reason, I can't access the energy monitor or hybrid system indicator screens. Is there a setting from the Settings screen or something I can access via Techstream?

On occasion, on the power generation screen, I see just the motor applying power to the wheels. this only lasts about 2-3 seconds and I can't see any pattern to it (speed, going down grade, cold, warm etc). Is this normal?

My 2002 Prius stopped while driving down the road and will not restart.
The fuel level is flashing and was ~ 1/2 when the car failed. My scanner will not read the OBDC 2 (not connecting). The windows other than the drivers will not go up or down.
The PRNDLB does not show gear.
The 12 volt battery is OK, but the HV battery shown as blank on the energy screen.
I hate to put too much into a 2002 with 190,000 miles, but it does still have value if I can get it running again.
For example if I needed a rebuilt battery for 15-1800 I would probably go for it. So far the car has been 100% reliable.

So I got my car today (2005) and I love it! I have some questions about it. When I was driving back from the dealership, I was watching the energy screen. The temperature was about 28F and it was mostly highway driving between 65-75 MPH.
During the drive, I kept noticing the yellow arrows flashing on for 500mS, then go off, then come back on in a few seconds. I wasn't able to keep the yellow arrows on consistently. There didn't seem to any sequence to it, it just seemed random. The battery never dropped below 7 bars except when I was going slow and it was always green when I was going slow. Also, the only time the battery went to 8 bars was when I braked hard and that was one time.
I would have thought the car would have used more of the battery to assist but at the same time my MPG was over 50 (51.1 to be exact) so I'm thinking this is normal. Is it?

So recently I was driving through highway 17 with 4 people and we'll my 07 Prius was slowing down like never I eventually smelled a little burn but I ignored it I just though the engine was working a bit to hard. Recently I noticed that on the energy screen it only shows that the battery is getting charged it sometimes used the battery to the motor but not often. I did notice though that I run with electricity more when I'm in the city. It's quite weird it's like the electric motor doesn't work on the freeway.

This just recently started happening just shy of 200k miles, 14 years. While driving down the road, suddenly notice a power loss or no power, i.e., no motor output. Sometimes the just the ICE won't accelerate, sometimes it's both ICE and Electric motive force. When this occurs, the Brake and ABS check lights turn on. After a few seconds, to 10's of seconds, then the motive power reenables and the Brake/ABS lights go out. Often the cars continues on with no repeat. Testing over a few drives, it seemed to only do it during the warmup cycle when coolant was near 160-170.
However on a drive in the afternoon after it occurred in the morning; with ambient around 30 degrees, windows cracked, interior heat off, it didn't occur on the 15 minute drive, mostly freeway speed, even after about 10 minutes and cranking interior heat on. No codes are registered when this happens. I used Torque Pro and monitored things like throttle position and such, and things there seemed normal. Eng rpm dropped under 1000rpm and wasn't steady. Watching the MFG the power flows responded to the throttle (pushed/released) as if the engine was still doing what was asked (go figure, the display shows what is commanded, not what is occurring?).

I'd like to understand the rate of braking that results in the maximum recovery of energy into the battery. I try to brake so that the needle goes down almost to the bottom of the 'charge' region, but not so strongly that the needle completely bottoms out. I figure that if the needle bottoms out completely, I am using the friction brakes. Is that the correct way to use the brakes? What technique to achieve 40mpg use?

My energy display wont lid. Car starts and runs without any "check engine" codes and warning light. At Toyota dealer they couldn't explain which ECU is related with energy display. Which fuse is in charge of this display?

If you are driving in 2wd and lose power to wheels is it possible the transfer case is the problem and not the transmission? This was in a 1995 Ford Explorer 4x4 automatic transmission.

Recently we've been seeing a steady Energy Consumption screen showing up on our monitor, even when we change the screen to another screen. It fluctuates between green, yellow, and red arrows pointing from the engine and around the screen. The red lines do not show up other than during acceleration. There is no other notice of any possible problem on the dashboard readout.

I just bought a 2010 Prius V and noticed the energy display is blurry and cloudy. I've read some other thread with others experiencing this issue but didn't find a solution to the problem. It seem to be blurry on the inside part of the display, nothing that can be cleaned off from the outside.

Initially I wasn't sure what 'B' position in the shifter. After googling (who will read manuals these days ) I came to know that it is for negotiating the steep downgrade so that brake doesn't heat up. I was wondering if B mode can be used while slowing down during normal driving condition, so that the energy is used for charging the battery rather than using up the brake pads.
I am quite amazed by the whole synergy drive tech. I also kind of little puzzled by the logic used for showing EV miles. If it gets depleted completely (zero), then it will never go up no matter how long you drive. However, if there is something left in the EV miles, and you switch to HV mode, it can go up during your regular driving.

When I was driving my car the engine was running fine, but all of a sudden there would be no power to the wheels as I was driving. I tried shifting the car down into lower gears, but the car still was just coming to a stop even though I was revving the engine. I was able to limp home because I could turn the car off for about 30 seconds, and when I would start it back up the engine and transmission would work fine together for a few blocks and then I would have the same problem. I did check my transmission fluid, which was low (at the lower dot when hot). Could this problem be fixed by simply changing and filling the transmission fluid? Or do you think it is something else? My car is an automatic with about 114,000 miles. At about 98,000 miles I had a full tune-up and my timing belt was replaced.

I've noticed that the display shows the Battery Discharge warning while the vehicle is running. I notice it while reversing, because - well, I'm watching the image from the camera. The message goes away in a few seconds and the regular "look around you" advice appears. It doesn't happen every time nor does it follow a change in weather. Just random occurrences.

The motor on my 2002 prius stopped while driving, and will not start. The car will not go into READY mode, but still allows slow operation on battery power. When powered up, the car usually makes one attempt to spin and start the motor, but there is no spark.

For the last few weeks, it has seemed that the battery gauge on my 2002 has been half full more often than it should. I admit that I have no good science for this determination, but about half the time when I return home from work the gauge shows half full, and it returns to full after about 1 - 2 miles of driving. The car has about 122K miles on it.
Today I took a long drive through some pretty steep terrain toward the New River Gorge in WVA. Round trip it was about 750 miles. On the way home, I got an error on the console. I'm not sure what it was, but on the main display there were three boxes with writing. I didn't read them as I was pulling off to the shoulder. By the time I got there, the warning was gone. I turned the car off and restarted it. Everything looked good and I headed the remaining 10 miles home.
Once home, when I turned the car off, I heard a vibrating noise from (I think) the left side of the hood for about 5 - 10 seconds. I turned the car on again, and there is a vibrating sound, and the same turnoff problem.
Is this the final death knell of my traction battery? I have a 120K servicing due about now. I have been planning a reinvolt battery, but it is a bit of a drive away. Should I consider trailering the car down?
