Prius (Gen 3) :: Car Making Noise Hours After Being Shut Off
Jan 7, 2015
About three days ago, while taking the dogs out, I go through the garage, which is not heated, and I notice the Prius is making a noise. It sounds like an electric motor running but I can not figure out where exactly the noise is coming from. It had been raining, and the car was pulled in the garage wet. About 5 minutes ago, I heard the same noise while getting the dogs in from outside. Both times I came back in the house, grabbed a FOB, and hopped in the car and put it in ready mode. I immediately shut it off, and the noise was gone. It reminds me of the sound that the car makes when you open the drivers door, which I think is the master cylinder pressurizing. It is about 7 degrees F here, but I am sure it is a little warmer in the garage.
The car has about 33K miles on it. It gets driven everyday. Today, I got home about 4:30, and this just occurred at around 9:45. Whatever is causing the noise, I am sure will put a drain on the battery, as it definitely is an electrical motor of some sort running, which will take some power. I would hope that the power was coming from the 12 volt battery, and not the traction battery, as it usually disconnects a minute or so after the car is shut off. The car was definitely shut down when I drove it in, and every light was off on the dash when I got in to power it back up, except for the flashing lock light on the right side of the display. The wind chill here tonight is supposed to go to -25 degrees F. I am concerned about the car starting if it pulls too much power from the 12 volt battery.

I have a 350 throttle body injection 3/4 ton 87 Sierra with 107K miles that runs great but when I shut it off it won't start again! Starts right up when it's cold but I have to wait about 2 hours before it will start again once its been started. Turns over just fine. I recently replaced the coil but that didn't do the trick. Is there some kind of sensor or switch that could be heating up?

My new prius c two has been parked in the garage for 4 hours since getting home from work. I walked out a minute ago to take out the trash and it was making a humming noise, like electric humming.

I went to start my car this morning and it seemed my battery was dead. I then had my car jumped. It started fine, but the trip meter was reset. As i was driving it seemed fine. I then came to a stop at a traffic light and the engine started failing. I parked and the guages started going nuts, the engine was making a high whining noise, it sputtered a bit and then shut off. What is going on? Is it something i can do myself having little experience working on cars?

This is the second night in a row that we hear a noise coming from the back of the car. I know that some noises are normal but this is after the car is stopped/parked in the garage for some 5 hours.

Ok, so I have a Viair onboard compressor supplying air to airbags, train horn and fitting in the rear. With all that, I have multiple connections and some leak ever so slightly making the compressor cycle ever few hours. Question: Is there some sealant I can use with push on fittings and connectors to eliminate the leaks?

I have gone through several threads about A/C noise some saying its the compressor - others saying it is normal but I don't remember my A/C having this kind of noise. It doesn't matter what the ambient temperature is but it makes this noise, every time. I uploaded a video to youtube so you can hear it clearly. Any time the A/C button is pressed, the noise is made. The fan can be set to high, turn the A/C off and noise instantly goes away.
Also - A/C still blows cold and my fuel mileage hasn't changed much if any.

My prius that I got about 1 1/2 years ago (2013 model) was making some noise. After conducting a few experiments I came to the conclusion it was the heat that was causing it. I removed the glovebox and lower plastic panel as well to see if it was actually the blower that was making the noise. And it was the blower.
So now it's like 20 degrees outside and I haven't used the heat because I didn't want to blow something so gotta get this fixed ASAP.
Like I mentioned glovebox and lower panel are open I've removed 2 of the 3 screws necessary to remove the blower. So the problem lies with the 3rd screw. There is a plastic socket with wires that is preventing me from reaching the 3rd screw so I have to remove that socket. So I have a couple pictures and how I can remove this so I can access the blower motor.
Also isn't it strange that the car isn't even 3 years old and the blower is giving me problems?

Yesterday, while at the store. I started my 2004 prius and the engine was making some crazy knocking noises. I went to auto zone and pulled the codes. It said random cylinder misfire and misfire on cylinders 2,3, and 4.

Ok, I turned the A/C on High 65 degrees and drove about 2 miles home with four people in the car. When I turned the car off and got out I heard hissing and what can only be described as .. Well the old metal / Aluminum ice trays that we used to make ice cubes in the freazer? My kids said it sounded like the car was singing or playing music? I opened the hood but did not see any thing frozen. It took about 5 minutes to slowly fade out and stop making noise.

We've been happy owners of a 2012 Prius C for about 9 months now. We've recently noticed some type of heavy metal clunking, like something in the engine compartment fell off. This is happening at least 3 times a week and happens at stop lights or even, most recently 3-5 minutes after the car has been shut off. We plan on taking it to the dealer this weekend to check, but know that it will be impossible for them to replicate the noise as it isn't a persistent issue.

I started noticing some strange sounds coming from the engine compartment after shutting off the car ( a 2007 with 90K miles). It's different from the hum for several seconds that I often hear after switching off the car. This one is a squeaky rough sound like a small motor wearing out. I think it's from the driver side of the engine compartment. Is that where the inverter pump is? This car didn't have any record of needing the inverter pump changed for the recall as far as I could tell.

I have just purchase a used one 2 weeks ago. I bought it from a local dealer (Longo Toyota). After I got the car home for a day it started to make noises when i brake. If the brake pedal is depress about half way it will make a squeaking noise when it comes to a stop. So i bought the car back in to the dealer and all they did was flush the system and reboted the computer. They said this is normal for some pruis to make a noise when the vehicle comes to a stop and it should not be a safety concern.

I got a Prius c 2015 and when I got the car home (about 13 miles) the gas motor was making a noise when the car was turned off. It lasted about 3 or 4 minutes. Is that normal?
Also the brakes sound a little like a jet as I slow down. I think the brake noise is normal but the gas engine one is what concerned me.

Both of my front sway bar links have a bad joint and are making a bad noise.. I purchased the replacements and tried to loosen the nuts with no success. I put some oil to loosen them and will let them set over night. Next attempt will include a breaker bar.

I bought a 2004 that was hit in the front. I have it mostly put back together. However, after doing the major work I wanted to start the vehicle and move it. So I plugged in the main battery plug and re-hooked up the 12V battery. Then the dash lights lit up as well as a bunch of the idiot lights and I could hear the inverter making noise. When I push the power button, nothing.
I am at a loss because when I bought the vehicle it had a broken engine mount. When I was putting the car in neutral it tried to start and I didnt have all the dash lights lit up. Of course I turned it off immediately because of the engine mount. Now I have a bunch of lights on and no start.

While running some errands with my wife the other day she made a comment like "One thing I don't like about this car (my C4) is that the turn signal indicators don't make any noise when they're on". I said "You're joking, right? Even I can hear the clicking." Interestingly enough, my 27 yr. old daughter made a similar comment when I was driving her somewhere a week or so ago.
Well, the funny thing is that I'm finally starting to admit to myself that I'm losing my hearing. Everyone else around me has been aware of it for a while and puts up with my constantly asking them to repeat things. And yes, I should do something about it. But that's a story for another time.
